    I often find myself being negatively biased when I hear someone mentioning that they only listen to hiphop but one can easily forget how broad and incredible of a genre hip-hop can be and the countless influences it has. So someone open-minded can provide insightful opinions and easily venture into other genres and this video confirms that. I still haven't listened to every swans record nor do I have the patience to listen to them chronologically so your video helps decide what to listen to next. Nice

    • @choronos
      @choronos Год назад +3

      You kinda talked yourself out of that negative bias there, but honestly I think you're on to something. Hip hop is awesome, but it is definitely limited as a genre. Diverse samples can only take it so far in my opinion. I think people who only listen to hip hop and never branch out to listen to the music that inspired and influences rap are doing themselves a disservice.

  • @Electrohead92

    When it comes to their earlier heavy material, the Young God EP is some of the best content they put out, aside from Filth. It's also noteworthy because it was Kurt Cobain's favourite Swans release, as well as one of his overall favourite records. I also really enjoy the Swans self-titled EP, which sounds unlike anything in their discography. Heavy use of saxophone and overall much more punk sounding.
    I also consider Swans Are Dead to be an essential listen, depsite it being a live album. Tracks like Feel Happiness, which aren't on any of their studio albums, as well as the best versions of songs like Blood Promise, Hypogirl, and Low Life Form.

    So tired of new swans fans absolutely shitting on the burning world. Sure it’s not as groundbreaking as soundtracks or children of God but I believe it’s essential to their sound especially as gira Improved and expanded upon it in White light and especially angels of light. It’s a very pleasant straight up neo folk album and a huge breather after the huge Onslaught that was Filth, cop, and greed/holymoney a calm after the storm. Tho I think white light and love of life are their crowning achievement along with soundtracks those are tied as what I believe are swans at their creative and physical peak.

    3 years late, but I have to commend you for your utter bravery. "Looking to diversify my music taste a little from hip-hop" and jumping into Swans is analogous to wanting to learn to swim and subsequently backflipping into the mouth of an active volcano.
    If you ever can, see them live. My ears are still ringing from a 2016 show in Buenos Aires, but the ritual sacrifice was well worth it. Also, the live albums should NOT be overlooked. "Swans Are Dead" has some unique live tracks that are among their best (Feel Happiness). Delicquesence also has the 45-minute The Knot, their opener for their Glowing Man tour.

    Without mentioning Skin & Angels of Light it's not possible to get a full perspective on Swans discography. The albums which sit between the punctuation marking the change in Swans style are just as important. I don't think I'd have become the Swans fan I did if I'd not experienced Blood Women Roses at the same time I did Holy Money. That the same musicians created such different music blew my mind.

    Very interesting commentary. Speaking of post rock trilogies, I highly recommend you the pioneers of the movement, Talk Talk. More subtle and almost disintegrated, their last two albums (Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock) together with their singer Mark Hollis solo album seven years later form, for me, some kind of mesmerising trilogy, a counterpart to the three classic albums of Swans. Not as big in scope, but certainly as profound and totally different.

    My favorite album of theirs is a side project Ten Songs From Another World. From the World of Skin moniker. It has the best parts of WLFTMOI and the softer stuff. But nailed it in my opinion.
    Edit: I also shouldn't include their live album Kill the Child' of mid 80's material. It's just their cacophony and crescendo drone live is so much more intense and powerful than the studio albums. Probably goes for all their live albums.

      It’s cool how many differing opinions people have on this band’s discography. I really like filth a lot, but to me cop tops it in almost every way. It’s one of my most listened to albums of theirs. The way the drums and bass sound is so immense, and all the auxiliary percussion sounds mixed in gives the whole thing a really unique sound. The stretch from why hide through cop is just too good. The frantic, upbeat sound of filth is totally awesome in it’s own way for sure though. Probably depends on listener background a lot too. The Burning World is a fine album, it just doesn't fit as well into their discography because it's filled with compromises for the label. No standout tracks? It has 'God Damn The Sun', among their finest releases, and conceptually very important for future work. Microgenre and score obsessed. I mean this totally honestly and without wanting to come across as pretentious - you're approaching a band like Swans totally wrong. Kids these days. Listening to 15 albums shouldn't be a chore. Why don't you go out and teach your dog to catch a frisbee or something? The records will wait.
    My favorite Swans albums are "Public Castration" and "Blood, Women, Roses". Gira's alcoholism ruined much of what came after. Since "The Seer", he has been attracting musicians good enough to carry him. Fight me over it.

    The problem I’ve always had with Cop is that, while the guitar is quite a bit heavier, it’s missing the pulverizing punch of the two drums/two bass rhythm section from Filth. I also feel like Godflesh did what Swans did on Cop much better with Streetcleaner in 1989
