    Be aware that the minimum wage is $17.70 per hour PLUS sick leave, holiday pay, pay for public holidays, superannuation (which you can claim back when you leave) etc. OTHERWISE if you don't get these benefits and only get paid for the hours you are at work than the MINIMUM wage must include a 25% loading. So around $22 per hour. If you feel you are not being paid correctly but you really need the job, then suit yourself and report the employer to the state fairtrade or Cth Fair Work when you leave. Often people get a welcome "surprise" at the end.

    There's a few Aldi's in Australia as well, they may do fruit and vegetables a little bit cheaper for all my vegan/vegetarian friends

    Just a tip from someone who lives here. If you smoke then buying a packet of cigarettes is expensive. The government taxes the hell out of them. As and example a pack of 20 cigs will cost around $23 AUD. Solution, buy a 50 gram pouch of tobacco, a rolling machine. a bag of filters and cig papers. Shouldn't cost you more than $40 a week, even if you are a heavy smoker.
    Alcohol is also expensive, again due to taxes. Solution, buy cask wine (goon) You can buy a 5 litre cask of wine for about $18. Way cheaper than beer or spirits.

    Don't smoke, its super expensive, its almost illegal everywhere (pubs, clubs, anywhere food is served) and really you are better off spending the cash on fun things like surf lessons or sky diving.

    So is $105 aussie dollar each week enough ? Considering I have free accomodation. And don't drink alcohol nor smoke. Oh and i am on a vegan diet and propably stay in Melbourne for long , i"ll maybe go to Sydney in the weekend once.

    • @NomadicUnicorn
      @NomadicUnicorn  7 лет назад +1

      With free accommodation and not drinking or smoking you will most likely be able to get by on $105 a week, but it might be tight at times. If you are on a vegan diet, I would suggest trying to get your fruit and veg from local farmers markets rather than the supermarkets as this will help keep costs lower :)

    Some of the prices for food were surprisingly low, others very high. 1.99 for a 2L milk? It's double that here in Canada lol.

    Is tap water safe to drink in AUS ?
    So, with how much savings did you arrive there ? I'm leaving with the $5 000 they suggest having, I don't wanna freak out but seems like the everyday life is not cheap at all ......

    • @NomadicUnicorn
      @NomadicUnicorn  7 лет назад

      Tap water is perfectly safe in the towns/cities but may taste a bit funky. Just make sure you don't drink anything marked bore water and if something says its not drinking water, pay attention! I think I had the suggested amount too but I also had a credit card as back up (emergencies only) if i needed to fly home at any point. Everyday life isn't cheap and savings go down quick, which is why I recommend looking for work sooner rather than later. Wages are pretty good on the whole, just don't leave it until you are on your last $200 before you start looking!! I hope you have an amazing trip :D

    What's Perth like thinking of going over , are there my Irish brothers & sisters there ?

    • @NomadicUnicorn
      @NomadicUnicorn  8 лет назад

      +JJ Quinn mc Donagh I like Perth. Its smaller and a bit sleepier than some of the other main cities but everything is easily accessible and there is still plenty going on! You have lots of Irish brothers and sisters out there. For the best guinness in Perth...head to Durty Nelly's! It's the best we found :)

    Thank you that was soo helpful! I'm travelling from next month but stopping in Thailand and Bali along the way... starting to get super worried I won't have enough for Aus although i will be on a working visa I'd like to travel for a couple months first. Would you recommend a greyhound pass or buying a car to travel the east coast? x

    • @NomadicUnicorn
      @NomadicUnicorn  8 лет назад

      No problem! That's very exciting! Don't worry too much as Thailand and Bali are fairly cheap destinations, you shouldn't end up spending a fortune in either :) In all honesty, for the East Coast I would say save your money and get a Greyhound hop on- hop off pass. They stop pretty much everywhere, so you will be able to see plenty. Another company that is a bit cheaper still, is Premier. They do have less of a varied timetable though, which is why we chose Greyhound. I have a blog post on everything you need to know about the Greyhound here: nomadicunicorn.com/greyhound-australia/ You will be fine getting the pass once you are in Australia, no need to do it in advance. If you get Greyhound buses around Christmas/New Year make sure you book on in advance, as they do get really busy. Also plan your accommodation well in advance as many places get fully booked and prices do go up. I hope you have an amazing time :D

    Random question... what veggie substitutes do they have..like quorn ect? :D x

    • @NomadicUnicorn
      @NomadicUnicorn  8 лет назад

      Hey Annie! There are loads of veggie options although you will hear vegetarians referred to as vegos out there haha. You can find stuff in restaurants etc. in all the major cities. When you are more rural it can be a bit more challenging in terms of eating out, but you can always go to the supermarkets. Woolworths does Quorn and they have some amazing flavoured tofus (Macro honey soy one was my fave) and veggie burgers in the chilled section. Those bits are usually near to the cheese and yoghurts :D You can go to their online website and have a look if you're curious. There is also this eggplant (Aubergine) and miso dip....which is the BOMB! The best hummus is Obela if you're a hummus fan. A bit pricey (especially if you eat it all in one sitting, ahem) but SO GOOD!! Ps. Will be posting your parcel tomorrow, not been able to get to the post office as poorly, sorry !!! x

Thats cool that you're reading the blog, need to get more into a regular routine with articles but i'm working on it! Thank you! I will e-mail you to say it has been posted. I'm going to send it recorded delivery so there should be no chance of it going off course! xx
