    September 1 - December 27, 1985
    Studio
Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark

    Thrash metal
    Length

    Label
    Elektra
    Producer
    Flemming RasmussenMetallica
Released to critical acclaim, the album is considered to be one of the best in history, and one of the most influential to heavy metal. Its driving, virtuosic music and angry political lyrics drew praise from critics outside the metal community. With its atmospheric and meticulously performed songs, critics credit it for consolidating the American thrash metal scene. Many bands from all genres of heavy metal have covered the album's songs, including tribute albums. Master of Puppets was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" enough for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the United States Library of Congress in 2015,[2] the first metal recording to do so.

The pace of the song is to illustrate the cycle of addiction. The first part is the need and the control it has on the person. Fast and persistent . The middle melodic section illustrates the mood after a fix. Much more calm, relaxed and beautiful . Then it returns back into the demanding need and control the addiction requires. Until it controls and ultimately kills you. The way the music illustrates the cycle is actually quite brilliant. Just my interpretation.

You could say that at the beginning the heavy part is when looking for the fix. During the soft mellow part is when the fix is found. Then back to the heavy part at the end for the comedown.

im from a little town up in northern michigan, so we realy didnt have access to that type of music. to me, heavy metal was quiet riot, twisted sister, and ozzy. then my cousin from detroit brought that album when she came up for vacation. i heard master of puppets, and my life changed. there was me before master of puppets, and a very different me after master of puppets. i was so blown away by this music that was so fast, so heavy, so dark, just everything about that album stunned me. thats why no matter what phase im going through in music, no mater how old im getting, this imo will always be the greatest metal album of all time. and even though the honnymoon would eventualy come to and end with metalica, i think they will always be my favorite band. simply because of the impact of this album on my life. i dont know who i would be today if i never heard this. i shudder to think.

Kirk Hammet is the guitarist. I can relate to this song. I’ve been sober from 15 years of alcohol and drug abuse for 5 months now! If your out there suffering from any addiction please get help. If I can do it you can do it folks!
For Christmas I got the greatest gift ever. Through my addictions I left my wife 2 years ago. This woman was my best friend, my partner in crime, and biggest supporter. In reality I left my partner behind. Addiction will try to kill you so hard, it’ll take everything away from you. And after leaving her I tried to drink and drug myself to death for leaving. But guess what y’all, she just came and spent Christmas with me 2 years later! I totally didn’t deserve it. They wasn’t lying when they said GOD RESTORES!!! Happy New Year to everyone!

But it just means your ball hair is grey and doesn't give you the authority to correct someone's interpretation of art. "The death of the author is the birth of the reader," means the audiences perception of art and what it means to them is as valid an interpretation as the intent of the creator. It doesn't have to match up to have meaning, in fact it often displaces an individual's emotional connection to the lyrics and supplants it with a hollow imitation of what they think the creator might have felt. Music is not a standardized test where we all have to pick the correct answer to get it.

I can relate all this to the refined sugar, or smartphones, i.e. facebook, instagram, etc, etc. Why some comments complain about this is they did not understand what addiction, manipulation means. Sorry for them. Metallica are great philosophers and this song is with multiple layers meanings.

And yes, Master of Puppets is all about addiction, in this case, drug addiction.

Which SLAYER song do I recommend? Go with a classic. *Chemical Warfare*
"Master! Master!" is a continuation of Creeping Death's "Die! Die!" (Creeping Death is from Ride the Lightning, 1984).

Everyone already told you it's about drug addiction (so I'm guessing it makes alot more sense)
But it's interesting to know how the song structure kind of conveys a drug addicts moods..
The aggression in the beggining, & the coarse "your life burns faster...." Then after a couple loops it slows down with a melodic riff, giving you a relaxed vibe (almost like you got the hit you were looking for) then the aggression picks back up with the lyrics "master master, where's the dreams that I've been after. Master master, you promised only lies" this song is a work of art.

Great reaction guys. Love to see Metallica Creeping Death - an old testament gospel song Metallica style. Definitely recommend sticking with their studio versions with lyrics because some of that stuff is poetry - also their live versions they play faster and a bit harder to follow all the complexities of the music.

Pretty spot on.......anything can pull your strings. But it was specifically about drug addiction. During this time, the whole band was fighting addiction. The first two verses layout how the drug controls your every move as your master. Then the slower part, the user gets his/hit, gets high and they are calm......then it wears off (the heavy part), they realize they are no better off or worse off.....the whole Master, where's those dreams that I was after, you promised only lies part. Pretty deep song from a unique perspective. Great reaction though!

I am not a subscriber, but I would like to make a couple recommendations. 1 - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly. The full 17 minute version. It is from 1968. 2 - Lethal Tendencies by Hallows Eve. It is from 1986.
