Oviedo is truly the cleanest city I've ever spent time in. We stayed for 3 months and every night they would come and get the garbage and clean the streets. We would like to spend 3 months every year in Oviedo once kids are done with college. It's absolutely WONDERFUL! We walked everywhere. We took the train to get to Gijon. There is so much history in Oviedo.
Tengo la enorme suerte de vivir en Oviedo, mi lugar favorito del mundo, gracias por tus opiniones favorables de Oviedo, quédate con nosotros y que seas muy feliz
My family lives in Oviedo, and I've been there a few times, and it is the cleanest city I have ever been in. The landscape (the greenery, the mountains, everything) and feel of the city makes it such a great place to be in. Thank you for visiting Oviedo! I hope to return there soon!! Also, make sure (this is the first video I've seen by you so maybe you have already) to visit Covadonga. It's about an hour and a half drive from Oviedo, and it's where King Pelayo took Spain back from the Moors in the early 700's (714 I think?). There's a 1,300 year old Basilica, a grotto, and shrine
I lived in Cudillero 40 years ago and only passed through Oviedo. As soon as it's safe and possible to travel again, we will spend some serious time in Oviedo, thanks to this excellent video.
Great video stuart, I do like northern Spain and Oviedo looks lovely, I didn't think Madrid was that untidy but I suppose you live there and have compared both cities. The local councils clean up teams all over spain seem to be first rate. Food up north is a big feature of life, so much so that in most towns all over spain you can find restaurants devoted to asturian, galician, Basque food. It's always a fascination with me how they live in apartments, perhaps if the same was to be encouraged in the UK, ie, using up all the space above shops, it may halt the high street decline, Look forward to your next video
One of your best videos. Congratulations. We learn a lot about the city. I especially liked the way you recorded the conversation about asking for directions and put the actual dialog on the video. The good part about eating in the north of Spain is that you get good, dark bread. So much of the bread in the center and south is white, tasteless and nutritionless. Oviedo is in fact a nice city and very livable. Heading east you have the Picos de Europa and Santander, while heading west you have the coastal ports of Asturias and the equally beautiful coastline of northern Galicia.
Good video. I live in Chicago but I am from Oviedo. I was born and went to school there. All my family still lives in Oviedo and Gijón. Asturiano o Bable is the dialect some of us speak there. I visit 2 or 3 times a year.
I think Oviedo is the most beautifull city in europe with the best climate. I would like to move there one day. Is it a bad idea to invest there? Like buying a few older apartments and renting them out? Is there any demand for rental apartments?
Oviedo looks great! Speaking of teaching I believe Oviedo is the place where there are periodic teachers conventions. I don’t know if that’s necessarily English teachers or teachers in general. I don’t know if it would be too much of a change from your usual style but it would be great in my opinion if you were to do a food segment wherever you go. You do mention food sometimes but I’m talking about actually sitting down in a restaurant and showing some of the food you’re eating and maybe the beer and the wine? Just an idea from a foodie!
Northern Spain or Portugal are my favorite choices for my move. I have done the Camino and would ideally like to be up North because it is so green and beautiful.
Hi. I have been living in the UK for 12 years, thanks from bringing my hometown back. Good video. I had to leave Oviedo to go to another country because I could not find a job. In the video you said the city had 200,0000 inhabitants. That number is according to El Censo. The real figure I think is smaller than 90,000.
Hola! I will be visiting Spain in July and your video of Oviedo has convinced me to visit this city and Asturias. As for the definition of clean and how Oviedo got its recognition for that, it really is about how the city is managed and run. And not forgetting the efforts of the locals, of course. A few cigarette butts doesn't put into doubt about the 'cleanliness' of a place. Behind the scenes, there are systems that have been put into place to make a place competitive-ly clean which are not in public view. Meanwhile, good job for this video!
Indeed. Cash converters originated in Perth , Australia. But those Canary island palms, which by the way are by far the most popular palm trees around the world were not brought back from South America. Canary island palms as the name suggests are from said Spanish islands. Hence the name. Been to Oviedo and thought it was a reasonably nice city. Nothing out of this world to be honest. Asturias is about the country side like the spectacular picos de Europa and incredible historic little towns such as Canvas de Onís and Covadonga. The Cantabria coast nearby is absolutely stunning as well.
Hi, Stewart! This video was really excellent and different from others we are used to seeing about small cities. And as it is your habit you gave us a balanced view of what you are presenting to us. To sum it up: Beautiful architecture; small-to-medium size city; conspicuously clean; nice weather (not suffocating or to the extremes as in other parts of Spain); good cultural & cuisine life; attractive parks and monuments; surrounded by hills and mountains & close to the sea; and nice people --not full of the arrogance of big-city dwellers. Congrats to you for your Spanish: clear pronunciation and perfect sintax. Don't listen to people who always see "un pelo en la sopa" --as an old Spanish saying goes. You always try to be objective and rational. You do this for fun not for tourist purposes. Thoroughly agree with you: Oviedo is the perfect place to live in Spain given all the good pros you stated. Nothing is perfect. I particularly enjoyed very much this new great vid! Just keep going like that! Orlando
One aspect of Spanish cities I loved was narrow streets and "parking anywhere" regardless of the law. I know the traffic is bad but I didn't care. It's changed and will continue to change towards less traffic but I have my memories.
People see with their minds and not with their eyes. Most folks that host travel channels on RUclips are wise to this and they paint the picture that you have already envisioned in your mind about a certain locale. The videos they craft are produced and edited to give you what you want to see and hear. Stuart is more detached and analytical when it comes to exploring various locales, he see with his eyes and not with his mind. For example, in this video , he notices the cigarette butts on the sidewalks. This is what I'm looking for , namely an unbiased opinion of Spain. Stuart stays true to his convictions , he tells I like it is rather than telling people what they want to hear and showing them what they want to see. This is so refreshing from the multitude of other travel channels where the hosts repeatedly extol the splendiferous ethereal "wonders" of a particular locale while overlooking its flaws. Personally, I think Stuart is heading down the right path with his RUclips channel. We're living in age where the world is becoming more "flat" so to speak and thus the world is truly one's oyster. More and more people are shopping around for various places across the globe to travel, retire, work, live than ever before and they want to understand the nuts & bolts of living in a particular foreign country. Anyway, the point I'm driving at is that Stuart provides value rather than appeal to people's natural proclivity for aestheticism. And after viewing a dozen or so of his videos, I've got a far better idea of what it will take to live and prosper in Spain. Perhaps others don't appreciate the true value that he provides but I do. And just for the record, seldom do most folks provide any value at all, they're worthless. Thumbs Up Stuart !!
Hi! Thanks for the video. I enjoyed very much hearing your experience and input about my city. Just one friendly remark (I hope it wasn't stated before): Woody Allen's statue was placed before the movie 'Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona' was shoot. As far as I know, Allen complimented the city of Oviedo when he was granted a 'Principe de Asturias' Award. A year after that the statue was set as a sign of gratitude. Fun fact: Woody Allen's glasses have been found broken plenty of times as a protest, aligned with the #meetoo movement you stated. Thanks again for the video, I hope you enjoyed your stay here.
Woody pre-dates Vicky Cristina Barcelona; the statue was certainly there in 2005. Oviedo is lovely: great food, yes, and very historic what with the pre-Romanic churches.
I’d like to see a video that compares the best nieghborhoods for someone moving to Spain to consider living in. Also taking into account all the possible age brackets I.e. 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 55+ etc. TY & Keep up the great videos & work!
Hola Stuart! I'm very happy to have just discovered your videos - I moved to Asturias (Gijón) from Barcelona recently and love it. The weather hasn't been at all as bad as I'd expected, but apparently (according to my novia who is from here) it's noticeably drier and warmer than it used to be. Global warming, possibly. Anyway, let me know next time you visit and hopefully we can grab a caña!
@@ikerdelpalacio5160 The heat is very similar to where I'm from here in Australia the driest state in the driest continent so it's not an issue. The beaches are great especially in Cabo de Gata national park and the green houses certainly aren't in the centre of town and are so different to where I'm from they are actually an interesting aspect of the area and a huge contributor to the food production of Spain. As for your drug reference if you're looking for that sort of thing it can be found anywhere, it's not my thing so perhaps a little blind to that and it's never been an issue I've had to deal with or encountered. I think if you want to find the negative in any place you live or travel you certainly can. As for this region the food is amazing the locals are warm welcoming and friendly the area and city is full of history and a strong sense of culture and Almeria is not on the hit list of the mass tourist trade making it little more genuine and real. As I travel more of Spain I'm certain that there will be other places I will love but Almería is certainly worth a look and is off the well beaten tourist route.
@@arianam9977 Hi Ariana I am yet to visit Malaga and Seville but they are certainly on the list as is most of the country however it's good to get off the main tourist route and experience something more real from time to time too, perhaps why I so like Almería. So far I have been in Madrid, Barcelona, Stiges, Toledo, Ávila, Segovia, Salamanca, Granada, Almería and surrounding district's , Mojacar, and San José enjoying a weekend and night on the beach for San Juan in the Cabo de Gata national park. There is so much to see and explore in Spain and each vist I am lucky that I am able to explore a little more. Can't wait to get to the north sometime too but love the parts of the South I have seen, friendly people, great food, flamenco and amazing hospitality. Hopefully my next trip I'll get to Seville. Will miss the Feria though lol.
@@ikerdelpalacio5160 ahhh no not from the outback but in Adelaide in South Australia it is considered the gateway way to the outback however. If you think Almería is hot the outback will be like an inferno for you lol. In Adelaide during summer we reach tops of up to 46 degrees so is very hot and very dry., but our beaches are great with clean white sand and very few people - a great way to cool off in the evenings or early mornings just avoid the Great White Sharks.
@@ikerdelpalacio5160 not sure about the sea temperature but is still cool /cold as is definitely not tropical waters. You can cage dive with the White Pointer Sharks here in South Australia in a town called Port Lincoln.
Thanks so much for walking me around my home city, I miss it so much, those streets and small businesses are so familiar, they take me back to my childhood. Living with my intercultural family continents away, looking forward to the day we can go back to live in Asturias, even if that is for a couple of years only, can't wait to walk around familiar places where my grandpa and parents lived, to pass by my primary and middle school, pay a visit to the university campus and perhaps even pick up my daughters from their school day if we manage to ever make that move. Intercultural families...the issue with visas, jobs, languages...not everything is advantages :)
Certainly a part of Spain I want to discover, that and the Basque country, need to look at trains and hotels from Madrid and dates when the towns/cities have something going on. If you went around Madrid around Easter 2019, it was pretty dead in the center. The rain probably frightened off the religious processions also. Oviedo is meant to have some of the best tapas bars in the country (fabada and meat content ones). What is a Woody Allen statue doing in Oviedo ? do they have a film festival there and Woody came to visit ?
Oviedo adores the famed American film director, awarding him Spain's most prestigious arts prize, the Prince of Asturias award, in 2002. Allen attended the grand ceremony to receive his prize in Oviedo. The city unveiled its next tribute to the iconic director the following year, with a lifesize bronze statue, designed by Spanish painter and sculptor, Vicente Menéndez Santarúa, known as Santarúa.
We eat "raciones", and fabada is served as a dish when eating in restaurants. Going out to eat "tapas" is something we don't do here, it has more to do with Madrid or the south... I suppose there may be places in Gascona boulevard where they offer "tapas", this is just because tourists ask for them.
There are lots of statues because Spain and Oviedo has lots of history behind them. Sad you didnt film the statue of "La Regenta" one of the best modern novels in history ;D
I would have loved to have seen the city. Panorama shots, quirky character shots, atmospheric street shots all with stable camera work. Instead 3/4 of the video was your face bobbing around.
Mil gracias por el video Stuart we have passed the Woody Alan statue a few time he said he said la cuidad es una cuento de hados .Last night here off to Leon tomorrow

I went to Spain in the summer of ‘04. Spent about two weeks in Oviedo and two weeks in Sevilla, along with a few days in Madrid and a couple of days traveling between Madrid, Oviedo and Sevilla. I liked Asturias overall, but the weather seemed odd for the summer, as it wasn’t very warm, it was overcast and rained a lot, and it got cool at night. In Areas south of Asturias it got much warmer and sunnier. I have to say that traveling into and through Asturias and also Cantabria was nice and at times breathtaking with the mountains and other scenery. Picos de Europa (we stayed I think in Potes) was something else. Nightlife in all of these places was at least interesting, the coolest and liveliest (and latest) of night lives being hands down in Sevilla. All you need to know is Calle Betis and you’re set. Taking the train from Oviedo to Gijón was a fun outing, and like you alluded to, everywhere you went sidra was the drink of choice, and it was always good. Tapas like queso manchego and jamón serrano were always good. Never really cared much for the tortilla or paella though. With Oviedo, there are a lot of hills, and not the best public transportation (there are buses, or you can take a cab, but they don’t go everywhere) plus, at least when I was there, there were a LOT of very old people all over the place, so I can understand the cars being downtown to an extent. Overall, I preferred Madrid and Sevilla and their climates to Oviedo and the Asturian climate. There are hills in Madrid too, but not as bad as up north, and you don’t have to travel far to find what you need. Other places I liked (for what they were at least) were Toledo (nice old town), Segovia (another nice old town with a cool ancient aqueduct running through it), Leon (another old town lol) and Salamanca (considered a college town, but also a cool old town). If I had to pick one of these towns (haven’t been to Barcelona or other major towns that I can think of), it would have to be Sevilla. Not just for the awesomely cool nightlife, but also for its beauty and culture. If it weren’t so hot there in the summer, it might be the perfect city, or close to it.

asturias is by far, the best arra of spain. gastronomy, as in tje north is espectacular, weather is not bad as people say, coast and beaches,.mountains, a natural paradise full of history and heritage (since asturias was the area that conquered spain from the muslims). we try to keep it secret to avoid too much tourists, but is starting to get packed

I love your video content! Please don’t stop.
We were there 2 weeks ago. Loved it!
I'm considering Oviedo as the place to go for an early retirement. Thank you for the video showing what it looks like in person!
If you want to retire here in Asturias I suggest you look for information about Llanes or Cudillero.
I lived in Cudillero 40 years ago and only passed through Oviedo. As soon as it's safe and possible to travel again, we will spend some serious time in Oviedo, thanks to this excellent video.
You are so lucky living in Cudillero,,,, Wow!!
It's always a fascination with me how they live in apartments, perhaps if the same was to be encouraged in the UK, ie, using up all the space above shops, it may halt the high street decline,
Look forward to your next video
I don't know if it is the cleanest city but it is so beautiful❤️
Marina Casal It is and the fourth in Europe😊
After going to Italy the food in Spain is just as good if not better and much less cost.
Yeah, the Food in Spain is GOOD, tasty. I loved it.
Zachary Spain has the best food in Europe
Very beautiful city . Oviedo. I love coming here.
Thank you! Loved this video. Fantastic city made for people and stunningly beautiful. ✌
Thanks..😍😍
I gotta say it feels kinda weird to watch a video walking the streets i've walked for so many years
Lucky YOU.
I lived in Galicia for two years. You´re bang on regarding the food. It is second to none.
Galicia too beautiful😍😍
I agree with your point of view about Oviedo. Lovely place.
OMG IM LIVE HERE THANKS FOR YOUR WORDSS❣❣❣

Heidi Carreño oh ok great! I go to Oviedo almost everyday to study📚
I worked off and on in Oviedo for a few years. Oviedo is a gem.
Good video. I live in Chicago but I am from Oviedo. I was born and went to school there. All my family still lives in Oviedo and Gijón. Asturiano o Bable is the dialect some of us speak there. I visit 2 or 3 times a year.
I am from Oviedo and I used to live in Chicago too!
El bable no es un dialecto :(
I think Oviedo is the most beautifull city in europe with the best climate.
Awesome review of Oviedo. Asturias is definitely on my bucket list. 👍🏻✌🏼
Oviedo in fact is the start of the Primitivo Camino route. The more familiar Camino Frances does not pass through Oviedo.
You aren't related that THAT Alonso, are you? 🤭
That's Canvas de Onis

Nice video my friend, thanks for share
One aspect of Spanish cities I loved was narrow streets and "parking anywhere" regardless of the law. I know the traffic is bad but I didn't care. It's changed and will continue to change towards less traffic but I have my memories.
Se ve muy bonita la ciudad de Oviedo. Saludos desde California.
Wavvv...California😍😍😍😍tiene que ser fantastico..saludos desde Oviedo
Abuela is from Oviedo. Abuelo is from Riano and I have family in Solares and Bilbao. Northern Spain is beautiful!!
I enjoyed watching your video as always, gracias 😊
I love Asturias
Asturias patria querida...
Just moved to Oviedo from Canberra, Australia. Great place to stay.
@@ikerdelpalacio5160 You salty bitch, what gives you the right to criticize someone else's life? How rude!
Iker del Palacio ahora resulta que España es Níger, según como la describes 😂
Why did you move?
Woody pre-dates Vicky Cristina Barcelona; the statue was certainly there in 2005. Oviedo is lovely: great food, yes, and very historic what with the pre-Romanic churches.
I’d like to see a video that compares the best nieghborhoods for someone moving to Spain to consider living in. Also taking into account all the possible age brackets I.e. 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 55+ etc.
TY & Keep up the great videos & work!
Starting to watch your travel posts x
Hola Stuart! I'm very happy to have just discovered your videos - I moved to Asturias (Gijón) from Barcelona recently and love it. The weather hasn't been at all as bad as I'd expected, but apparently (according to my novia who is from here) it's noticeably drier and warmer than it used to be. Global warming, possibly.
Anyway, let me know next time you visit and hopefully we can grab a caña!
Thanks, mate, that's great!
Looks beautiful. Am yet to visit the North however Almería would have to be my favourite city in the South. Enjoying your videos keep them coming.
Did you visit Malaga and Seville? Just curiosity.
Thanks Stuart!! I enjoy all your videos but this specially because Oviedo is my city.

Nice one and good choice of music for the finale!
I've had the pleasure of staying there,
Beautiful place.
I agree this would be my choice too in exchange of the Communidad Valencian, Asturia is very nice to suit my clothes
great city i was born there and lived there till a was 11 years old
Certainly a part of Spain I want to discover, that and the Basque country, need to look at trains and hotels from Madrid and dates when the towns/cities have something going on.
Things like fabada or cocido are not tapa material, they are proper sit down rich dishes, you better be hungry when you order them!
There are lots of statues because Spain and Oviedo has lots of history behind them. Sad you didnt film the statue of "La Regenta" one of the best modern novels in history ;D
No, actually the big fat ass it's the greatest statue there 😂
I would have loved to have seen the city. Panorama shots, quirky character shots, atmospheric street shots all with stable camera work. Instead 3/4 of the video was your face bobbing around.
Fantastic review.. Please do some walk through the coastal cities on the North?
Mil gracias por el video Stuart we have passed the Woody Alan statue a few time he said he said la cuidad es una cuento de hados .Last night here off to Leon tomorrow
Great video!! Thanks!!
Cash converters in the UK abound too, great video, hola from Alicante
8:30 You know what's great about living in those houses? You can't see them from the inside. 😄
The buildings after them, now THAT'S architecture.
Spain is known around the world for flamenco and paella. And is a nice part of spanish culture. But not the only one!
Thank you for sharing to the english-speaking world the 'other Spain', wich is at least as good as mediterranean.
Madrid dirty? Mate, don’t know how much you’ve travelled the world, or where you come from, but Madrid is one of the cleanest BIG capitals in the world. London is filthy, New York as well. Paris is not clean at all, and getting worse every year...

VIVA OVIEDO!! PUXA ASTURIAS😍😍
I like your Spanish accent, excellent
i went there 2 years ago 😊.
It´S really a nice and clean city. I will come back
I went to Spain in the summer of ‘04.
Hello from Gijon!
I enjoyed several visits to Oviedo and the surrounding area. Could live there no problemo.

Oviedo is diferent❤💯👏👏❤️🌹👍
So if we can now go to bars and and go out on boats and go to church does this all have to be done during the time we are allowed out ie 8 to 10 am?

Great video. Was the owner of the dog nearby?
I like this city so much...really is green bay clean and also the people are helpfully but I think the life is littel expensive.
Woody Allen is definitely disgraced. Thanks for the tour. I might stop by. Keep it up.
asturias is by far, the best arra of spain. gastronomy, as in tje north is espectacular, weather is not bad as people say, coast and beaches,.mountains, a natural paradise full of history and heritage (since asturias was the area that conquered spain from the muslims). we try to keep it secret to avoid too much tourists, but is starting to get packed
That's subjective.
I think Oviedo is the most beautifull city in europe with the best climate. I would like to move there one day. Is it a bad idea to invest there? Like buying a few older apartments and renting them out? Is there any demand for rental apartments?
@@rih2370 Investing in real state in asturias can be a nightmare. Beachside towns can be profitable, but the region has very old population, and is losing population year by year. The cities still grow a little, but i would recommend to create value instead of buying houses
