There was even a spinoff movie on him (not so successful). It’s still probably the biggest meme in this part of world. The act is a mirror on the portrayal of larger than life characters in movies... look carefully at the suitcase of the killer, he even has a small bow and arrow in it... Thilakan’s reaction to his death is most probably the most commonly used Malayalam movie dialogue in Kerala.

Watch sandesham(1991) a story by sreenivasan also the lead in this movie.One of India's greatest 100 films in 100 years. A social satire that highlights dirty politics and its ruin to families and society!
The professional killer is supposed to be non sensical. Thilakan's character was driven against the wall so much by Dasan and Vijayan that he was willing to resort to any thing to get rid of them. It also is humorous that Dasan and Vijayan were able to dispose of the professional killer, something even the entire police force in India was unable to do. Adding to fortune favouring them yet again.
Nadodikattu is every Malayali's pride. We keralites are truly grateful to you duo for having patience and a kind heart to review a 1980's movie. Because when u look back at approx 40 years back, u really need to have a big heart to appreciate the narration and the level of comedy which mostly is slapstick.
The movie is so old and the comedy is rooted in Kerala. Did it translate well? I can't imagine movies like these being accessible to viewers from outside.

You guys have actually reviewed so many classics. I'm surprised you haven't seen Manichithratazhu yet. It's one of the most entertaining movies period, never loses its charm whenever I rewatch it. It's also remade in Tamil with Rajinikanth and in Hindi with Akshay Kumar. None of them capture the essence of the original though.
It's about the dream of an average malayali youth to get white-collar job in Kerala itself.If not,the next thing is gulf which was the popular destination of mallus at that time.Whatever job even so small they could hav done in Kerala,they will not do.But same thing is possible in gulf when they are away from their relatives.This mindset has-been well used in the film,when both vijayan and dasan dream for gulf and ultimately doing whatever jobs they get which was already available in Kerala but what was demanded was hardwork and sweating which they never wanted at first!
Now that you have watched this movie, please go ahead with watching Pattana pravesham first and then Akkare akkare akkare. Then only the cycle completes :D
Great review. I agree the subtitling is pretty bad and does no justice to Sreenivasan's razor-sharp dialogues. If only our streaming companies tried to make these movies more accessible to a non-Malayalee audience (they don't even care about showing the film in its right aspect ratio). By the way, you could have mentioned Thilakan's superb comedic performance in this film.

Excellent rating👌 This movie is still a prime time movie for tv channels . I would like to recommend another one, that is 'Thenmavin kombatthe'. This movie is a perfect entertainer than 'Nadodikkatte'. Here you can see another Mohanlal and Shobana. It's still a prime time weapon of a professional channel in malayalam, which is celebrating it's 26th year of releasing. You had to mention Mohanlal's Kerosene scene.
I wish you were Malayalees, there is something about our culture which makes these movies much more than how you must have experienced it. If only Charles Xavior was real!!

An opinion which probably has been subconsciously influenced heavily by nostalgia and the fact that everyone around me loves it too. Their review helps me look at it from a new perspective. Because we have so many factors influencing our opinion of these old films, one of the main factors being nostalgia. It's not just about getting an outsiders perspective in terms of cultural differences, it's also about getting an unbiased opinion since subconsciously we tend to look favourably at these old classics.

The impact and beauty of dialogues can get lost in subtitles and they need to do a lot of research to really understand the cultural setting of a movie. yes.. i have to say that the sequences to this movie ‘Patanapravesham’ and ‘Akkare akkare akkare’ are very entertaining as well and are the best sequences done for any malayalam movies without spoiling the original one.😀
One of my favourite movies of all time. Happy to see you guys finally saw it. It is understandable that some jokes didnt get through. A fair review nonetheless. Vijayan did disappear for large parts of the second half. Hope they make a digital remastered release and rewrite the subtitles with better dialogue.
The subtitles were not that good those days and it was done not so professionally for gulf countries where there was a demand (but limited) for malayalam movies. "Gandhinagar 2nd street" is 1 of the best comedy of Mohanlal, sreenivasan, and tilakan. It's on similar scale some genuine and some some slapstick comedy put together.
Amazing... understand it's difficult for u guys to really like it ..but still u got it, why Mohanlal and Sreenivasan at those times wer so dear to us ..
Great effort Guys! This triology and some mindless comedy flicks by Priyadarshan are so special to us keralites... Priyadarshan contributed lot to this genre.Most of them were inspired from foreign movies,but he is a wonderful director.

Most of the humour is culturally oriented. A bit difficult to fathom for non malayalees. But I really wish if only everyone could understand it. The man behind this is living legend sreenivasan. This was remade in Tamil which was a flop. Loved your review and agree that the first half is better.
According to an interview with the director of this film Sathyan Anthikad,the story,screenplay,dialogues were written by Sreenivasan.Only the idea of 2 jobless guys ending up in Chennai instead of Dubai was by Siddique Lal who planned that for a movie of their own but agreed to give it to this movie.The producer was warned by the director to just give a thank you in the credits instead of story credit.But after the movie attained cult staus,Siddique Lal kept claiming credit and the director regrets this to this day.Here is a link to that interview: silverscreen.in/movies/features/interviews/sathyan-anthikad/ Also,I hope your friend recommends another brilliant film by the same director - Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu(1988) starring Sreenivasan.This is Sreenivasan's best role ever.
Scenes involving professional killer Pavanayi though looked stupid, young people really enjoyed it those days when it was shown in the theatre! Even after 30+ years, death of the "professional killer" as Thilakan said in the movie "angine Pavanayi savamayi! enthokke bahalamayirunnu, malappuram kaththi, AK47, machine gun, bomb, olakkede moodu..." (Pavanayi is dead!) is a saying in Malayalam. When someone bosts about so many things, and in the end, if nothing happens, people in Kerala say "angine pavanayi savamayi" :-)

My favourite is Akkare Akkare Akkare. Lots of situational comedy and humour in that sequal.
Watch the evergreen cult classic in Malayalam Kottayam Kunjachan.

Most of the humour is culturally oriented. A bit difficult to fathom for non malayalees. But I really wish if only everyone could understand it. The man behind this is living legend sreenivasan. This was remade in Tamil which was a flop. Loved your review and agree that the first half is better.

According to an interview with the director of this film Sathyan Anthikad,the story,screenplay,dialogues were written by Sreenivasan.Only the idea of 2 jobless guys ending up in Chennai instead of Dubai was by Siddique Lal who planned that for a movie of their own but agreed to give it to this movie.The producer was warned by the director to just give a thank you in the credits instead of story credit.But after the movie attained cult staus,Siddique Lal kept claiming credit and the director regrets this to this day.Here is a link to that interview:

Scenes involving professional killer Pavanayi though looked stupid, young people really enjoyed it those days when it was shown in the theatre! Even after 30+ years, death of the "professional killer" as Thilakan said in the movie "angine Pavanayi savamayi! enthokke bahalamayirunnu, malappuram kaththi, AK47, machine gun, bomb, olakkede moodu..." (Pavanayi is dead!) is a saying in Malayalam. When someone bosts about so many things, and in the end, if nothing happens, people in Kerala say "angine pavanayi savamayi" :-)

Guru was the first Malayalam film submitted by India for the Oscars.
