    “How much of it is lost in translation?”
    Quite a lot. Because The Professional Killer part is one of the biggest winners of Malayali audience. There was even a spinoff movie on him (not so successful). It’s still probably the biggest meme in this part of world. The act is a mirror on the portrayal of larger than life characters in movies... look carefully at the suitcase of the killer, he even has a small bow and arrow in it... Thilakan’s reaction to his death is most probably the most commonly used Malayalam movie dialogue in Kerala.

  • @Hari-kx2er
    @Hari-kx2er 4 года назад +47

    The professional killer is supposed to be non sensical. Thilakan's character was driven against the wall so much by Dasan and Vijayan that he was willing to resort to any thing to get rid of them. It also is humorous that Dasan and Vijayan were able to dispose of the professional killer, something even the entire police force in India was unable to do. Adding to fortune favouring them yet again.

    It's about the dream of an average malayali youth to get white-collar job in Kerala itself.If not,the next thing is gulf which was the popular destination of mallus at that time.Whatever job even so small they could hav done in Kerala,they will not do.But same thing is possible in gulf when they are away from their relatives.This mindset has-been well used in the film,when both vijayan and dasan dream for gulf and ultimately doing whatever jobs they get which was already available in Kerala but what was demanded was hardwork and sweating which they never wanted at first!

      Adwaith Ratnakaran Interesting. However Malayalam movies are very much rooted in the nuances of Malayalam language and also the culture of Kerala. The impact and beauty of dialogues can get lost in subtitles and they need to do a lot of research to really understand the cultural setting of a movie. It is not fair to expect them to that much research and ground work all the time. No disrespect to Jimmy Cage or Deniz the Buddymeister. Just stating the facts
      P.S: No opinion is really unbiased.We are shaped by our culture and society and they by theirs.

    Most of the humour is culturally oriented. A bit difficult to fathom for non malayalees. But I really wish if only everyone could understand it. The man behind this is living legend sreenivasan. This was remade in Tamil which was a flop. Loved your review and agree that the first half is better.

    According to an interview with the director of this film Sathyan Anthikad,the story,screenplay,dialogues were written by Sreenivasan.Only the idea of 2 jobless guys ending up in Chennai instead of Dubai was by Siddique Lal who planned that for a movie of their own but agreed to give it to this movie.The producer was warned by the director to just give a thank you in the credits instead of story credit.But after the movie attained cult staus,Siddique Lal kept claiming credit and the director regrets this to this day.Here is a link to that interview:
    silverscreen.in/movies/features/interviews/sathyan-anthikad/
    Also,I hope your friend recommends another brilliant film by the same director - Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu(1988) starring Sreenivasan.This is Sreenivasan's best role ever.

    Scenes involving professional killer Pavanayi though looked stupid, young people really enjoyed it those days when it was shown in the theatre! Even after 30+ years, death of the "professional killer" as Thilakan said in the movie "angine Pavanayi savamayi! enthokke bahalamayirunnu, malappuram kaththi, AK47, machine gun, bomb, olakkede moodu..." (Pavanayi is dead!) is a saying in Malayalam. When someone bosts about so many things, and in the end, if nothing happens, people in Kerala say "angine pavanayi savamayi" :-)
