Track: Almost (Live), Artist: OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark), Album: Architecture And Morality Tour - Live At The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - 1981
"Orchestral Manoeuvres were such a huge influence on me. The reason I got into electronic music was because I heard the track 'Almost'. That's when I thought to myself, 'Oh my God, electronic music actually has some emotion'." - Vince Clarke (co-founder of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure).
I’d say OMD were more of a synth band than an electronic band. Mainly because of the emotion and because they didn’t make synths part of their image like kraftwerk did. They brushed on too many styles to just be an electronic band although they did make some electronic songs.
I was brought up on their greatest hits then I listened to their albums. The greatest hits compilation hardly do them justice because the first 4 albums are absolute masterpieces!
All of the clips from this concert are amazing; the quality of the performances, video, and sound is excellent, especially considering this was recorded 30 years ago. After stumbling across these videos on RUclips, I was happy to learn that the Drury Lane concert can be found in its entirety on the DVD that comes with the recent reissue of Architecture & Morality, which I just ordered from Amazon.
I saw then touring in France in 1980 I was a teenager everything was new the set the atmosphère i immediately capture the essence of this song today it’s the same feeling listening « almost »
seen them around 40times and each concert is as good as the last one.this is a awesome tune still sounds perfect 30 years plus plus whom ever posted to u tube thanks
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark dedicated the song "Almost" to Andy Fletcher during their show at the Greek Theatre in LA on the day of his death, May 26 2022. The song had inspired future Depeche Mode bandmate Vince Clarke to pursue electronic music.
its good to know andy is as into it as i am.. i thought i was alone in flailing myself around like that to this album.. lovey love my omd.. it happens all the time..
@depechemodevilla I saw this band 5 times from 1985 through 1990 in Los Angeles...also opened for them one show...and they put on an awesome show......if any band members are looking at this, I was the one holding the letters ELECTRICITY at Universal Amp and opened for them at Key club os Angeles....Paul signed my CD's
It's The Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1981, that was the gig released on DVD. I'd imagine that's where this has come from. They didn't play Hammersmith Odeon until '84.
OMD were a triumph of the Northern working class. A right-handed kid playing a grubby, used, left-handed bass, and singing the best he could. His buddy playing the most low-end polyphonic synth on the market (Korg M500), which they had to pay for in never-ending, interest-laden instalments. Out of that came genius tracks like "Almost", "Electricity", "Messages", "Enola Gay" and "Stanlow". Incredible band with an incredible story.
Does anyone ever got the second and number twelve songs from this 1981 concert? It is Mysteriality and She's Leaving ..anybody's planning to put them online?
Considering they (and I think Motion and Heart) are not part of this package, they must have been 'censored' by RUclips for whatever reason. Likely RIAA whining.
@@humanchannel7825 apparently 11 years ago i said someone was an Aussie ? I don’t remember who or why ? It seems you disagree? You could be right? This may never be resolved but thanks for responding…..
hes not the only musician to dane around like that. during that time a lot of musicians in pop music used to move like that. but not as original as this guy lol.

Great theatre.
superbe morceau de muzik !!!
Esta es una de mis canciones favoritas de este grupo. Excelente tema, gracias por compartirla...
When the tempo is up, like it is here, it sounds more "new wave", but slower, like the album, its much darker and more Goth
minimal wave at its best !

saw them on this tour in hamilton canada great show
the MOST for sure !!!! thanks for these gems
OMD used 'Winston' (the reel-to-reel) for their percussions in the earliest days.
They weren’t by now
que de bons souvenirs Palace années 80
Andy is right-handed, but originally learned to play bass guitar on a left-handed model. As a result, he plays with the strings "upside down"
His bass is spray painted grey
0:27 to skip into :)
Cara que perfeição
How wet ist Andy during Almost performance in this Live Version...i Luv OMD!!!
i need this !!!!

Wow... Andy McCluskey is some ace bass player... he knows most of the notes on the fretboard.
This is excellent! I didnt think they would be a great live band
Though the band hated it, the best version for me it's the one produced by Martin Hannett.
´lo mass perron que existe en este planeta, synth pop
thanks a lot for uploading this! i didn't think i would find it.
Steve, it's lit. Yiedis How I feel. Lit
omg genial.danke!

Does anybody knows why Andy plays the bass with the strings upside down?

Ground breaking
Aye, tis a haunted beastie.. but cozy.

OMD was using live percussion in the early days, DM used a tape or drum machine. Yet, Dm in the later years used live percussion. Confusing.
Vhf first impressions
He probably did realize it... Read: "All he could afford".
Another live version that sounds so much better than the recorded stuff. What gives?
Yes, he's an aussie
No

Although it's still good, I don't think it has the amazing quality it does does otherwise live.
same as ... it's hammersmith
all he could afford with his 16th birthday money was a second hand bass which was left handed he did not relaise this when he brought it?
funny thing is nowadays finding left handed bass is so hard lol.
too fast
I love the song, just can't stand the dancing. LOL

Sacrilege.
