  • In this video, I dehydrate my SunGold cherry tomatoes. It is mid summer and we are in a heatwave and according to North Carolina Drought Management, our drought condition is DO which is the code for Abnormally Dry. At the end of June, my 16-year-old daughter and I went on a road trip, then the next week we went camping, and the next week we went on another road trip. My in ground and raised gardens became overgrown. Some of my SunGold cherry tomatoes are in large potted planters on my deck, and with all of the above conditions, those cherry tomatoe plants went into distress. I knew I needed to harvest all of the SunGolds and figure out what to do with them! Then low and behold, one of the Creators on RUclips that I watch popped up with a video from a few years ago about dehydrating cherry tomatoes so that is how the idea came about for me to preserve mine. I washed them, cut them in half, tossed them in olive oil, seasoned with peppercorn medley, and sea salt. Some of them also got tossed in garlic, basil, and oregano. I hope you enjoy this video. If so, smash the like and subscribe buttons. Thank you for watching 🌞 SunCherry 🍒 Farm 🏡

Mmmm yellow tomato powder for when you don’t want everything red!
No oil if you are drying and powdering

Hmmm sounds like a great addition to my spice rack. Will definitely dry some for that.

Hello from Wales, UK. I grew Sungold for the first time this summer. Yesterday I picked a big batch from the polytunnel. So ripe they were falling into my hands. I cooked them with salt, pepper, Italian Seasoning and some organic tomato paste then whizzed them up in my Nutribullet.....oh, my goodness! Sooo delicious!! it will make perfect pizza topping.
I may try dehydrating the next batch, thank you 😀

Just reading your comment makes my mouth water. Sungold is my favorite cherry tomato. My first time growing them were last year and I can say that no cherry tomato comes near beating the tast of a Sungold. Hope you get to dehydrate some soon.

I am questioning using oil. From what I have read, all sources say NOT to use any fats or oils in dehydrating food, for two reasons: 1) it inhibits drying, 2) it can go rancid when stored at room temperature. Do you have a good reason to use oil in this process?

Good question! I actually got my recipe from several places and just modified it for my taste. The olive oil did not alter the dry and crispyness of the tomatoes.

This is one recipe that I referred to which states to not leave any moisture, and I didn't.
This recipe is from Roots and Refuge Farm

Dehydrating Cherry Tomatoes Step by Step
Rinse cherry tomatoes and pat dry.
Cut the tomatoes in half on the cutting board.
Place in a bowl to add salt, oil, or other seasonings as desired.
If seasoning, place tomatoes cut side down on the dehydrator trays. If you are not seasoning, place them face up. Pro Tip: You may want to line the dehydrator trays or baking sheets with parchment paper so the tomato liquid does not drip all over your dehydrator or your oven.
Make sure the tomatoes are spaced out evenly and in a single layer.
Dehydrate the cherry tomatoes for about 12 hours. The temperature needs to be between 125°F - 135°F. Pro Tip: Most ovens do not have a temperature setting this low. Just put the oven on its lowest setting, and crack the door slightly to allow some of the heat to escape, and to allow more airflow so condensation does not occur.
Start checking the cherry tomatoes at about the 10-hour mark to see if some are done. Remove those that are completely dehydrated and continue dehydrating the larger tomatoes.
Remove tomatoes from trays and place them in an airtight container. Pro Tip: Make sure there is no moisture left in the cherry tomato when storing. Any moisture remaining will cause mold.
