    I spend a lot of time in my shop working on blades, and when I'm not, I'm usually watching videos about bladesmithing. This is some fine work! The effort to show the making of all the fittings, saya, tsuba, and tsuka. Great job! I love the shinogi zukuri blade with the longer kissaki/boshi. It's beautifully done. I can't say enough good about this piece. You should take great pride in this work. Thank you for sharing your work and taking the extra time to film it for us.

      Thank you , friend. Your comment really cheers me up. And in this exact moment I really needed some cheering up :) I watched and read a lot of materials about these blades and I wanted it to be close to the real examples. I also know that it's far from them. I hope that in future I'll have the chance to make more and improve myself more :)

    This is the best modern-technique video I’ve seen for a tanto. Has all the fittings and everything, minus the menuki (handle ornament). Any modern bladesmith (including myself) ought to have respect for the time, effort and skill that went into this blade. Well done!

    For the ito wrapping, i recommend a vice. Itll give you a REALLY tight grip. I also recommend using skate laces instead of shoe laces, especially the thick kind. These both will give you such a tight grip that you wont even be able to move the wrapping at all. I even go the extra mile to lightly scorch my wrapping to give it a shiny and tightened look that also gives it a little bit of sweat resistance. Wonderful video!!!

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the tips , I replaced the shoe laces with proper ito wrap a few months after the video :) Yes I should make myself a special fixture for the handle so I can clamp it on my vice :) For my next tsuka project I will try to make my setup better. Cherrs

    dude just because the hamon isn't especially neat, doesn't mean you didn't do an excellent job in forming it properly. I personally like the rougher look of it. You have absolutely nothing of which to be ashamed for making a tanto from a discarded file. A Bulgarian using a Suomalainen puuko to make a Japanese tanto is pretty cool. Wait, I am trying to learn how to do the Habaki this exactly way, with no torch. did you added somethng else on it like some fluid or it was just the metals arming in the forge? this would help me finishing my firt blade ever, I did almost everything, but never figured the habaki thing

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  14 дней назад

      I added a piece of silver solder and silver solder flux (not sure what exactly the flux is but I think it's boric acid)

    seppa is just washer, there's no reason to make that thick and prescise.
    10:46 it is meaningless too. you have to wrap it anyway.
    12:10 it is.... not meaningless but you can wrap it whole around of handle instead. the only reason of why japanese do that is just cost reduction. and difference of height are concealed by ito's twisted part.
    13:32 shoe laces are not bad at all. but it is sticked out.... poped up... I don't know how I can say it correctly in english, but normally height of ito's doesn't twisted part are flattened as fuchi and kashira's. because it is not olny looks and feels good but also prevent ito from sliding in the handle.
    15:28 I think he said like this : "it will cut" ;)
    other than that, you did fantastic job. I like it, plz make more.

      wow , thank you for taking the time for this detailed comment mate :) Yea this was an experiment and something like learning experience and not a proper way to build a Japanese style construction. I would like to make more and I'll do as soon as my condition and the weather allows me. Cheers :)
