I Hit pause On your Video, mid echo dream demo, went to reverb And $218 later came right back and finished your video.I want to commend you on such Great content. Thank you.
Your description and analysis of the pedals you review is second to none and beautifully complements your demonstrations. My favourite pedal review channel by far - keep up the good work Stefan!
I got a deep blue delay that uses this chip, a real old one from 2008, I love it so much! makes sense it's the chip in all these delays so i never felt the need to upgarde! thanks for this video, super informational
The Kilobyte is still one of my favorite delay pedals of all time. The delays sound great and are very present, and the modulation circuit is the definition of "lush"! Can't wait to try out the Megabyte!
Thought i was having a stroke.... and i was. But still, that modulation is amazing. As soon as the left side of my body starts working again I’m gonna try to get my hands on one...
What an AWESOME nerd out! Loved your intro explaining how the chipset makes the utter insanity of some of those pedals possible. The Fernweh was my favorite, those dual delays just sound so lush and expansive together.
Thanks! Stoked you liked the video. And yeah, self-oscillation is definitely something PT2399 designs are great at. Just sounds and reacts just like a true analog delay would.
Very nice video and great playing as usual man! So cool to see how the same component can be worked differently to achieve different/unique sounds - you can hear how different the repeats sound with the different boxes.
Really happy you liked the video, and even more happy to hear that you learned something new, and are able to appreciate the differences in sound in a new way now 😊
I've been a fan of this chip since building a rebote kit many years ago. This was the first time I've seen one of your videos. You play beautifully and have great sounds. That fernweh has to be the most visually beautiful pedal I've seen. I'll be watching this a lot. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
My favs in this vid were the DBA Echo Dream and the EQD Space Spiral. I have ordered a Space Spiral a couple days ago but I just found this video! To me those two sounded the most clear while retaining that analog/lo-fi vibe, some of the others were a bit too washy and murky for me. Nice video as always.
Haha hey Stefan, it is ironic that you just responded to my fan boy comments on the ED2. Without really knowing it, I have a few pedals here with the PT2399 chip. One I know for sure is "Wampler's faux tape delay" and it has vibe for days. You can hear the sound of this chip in all these pedals, very impressive, thanks for sharing this. The self oscillating feed back sounds like the real thing! Wow Black lodge sounds great as they all do. I don't know what Johnny Greenwood used for delay (probably many pedals and tape delays) but this chip just oozes Radio Head'ness.
...I think you had a private moment with the Electroman-- get a room. Oscillation--? I've always heard it as another "O" word. Joking aside, excellent demos, as usual. Everything sounded great, I mean, those are all ridiculously beautiful gear creations, but the real sweetness is in the playing-- dynamics, composition, connection. This is a special channel that really shows off the gear but gives you a stroll through an aural art gallery at the same time. Click for the information but come away with inspiration.
Wow! I've never seen that Black Lodge before. Sounds great! Feels like I could get trapped inside for 25 years though, but I have a feeling it could take me to a place both wonderful and strange!
That pedal is deep. I barely scratched the surface in that very short clip. Ton of cool ambient textures in that thing. The delay and reverb work together in a very unique way.
My respect for the Black Lodge jumped several paces, so I'm grateful we got to see you ripping through it. Still only have an Electroman from this bunch but I'm a sucker for this chip, apparently: so many of these have been under my gaze. It'd be fun to have a video just on stacking delays. Wait, did that happen already?
Happy you enjoyed the Black Lodge. It’s a really fun and unique Delay/Reverb. And yes, I did a short video on how to stack two delays waaaay back in the early days of the channel.
@@thepedalzone I actually went back and found that! It's a great and validating little vid: validating my delay obsession, that is. Paired with the Chords of Orion video on the same topic, they make for a quick mini-course. :)
Man oh man. I just sold a delay, bought a delay, and now I've got to get a space spiral. I'll be running three delays if they all fit on the board haha! I really love material like this. Total nerd-out on sounds plus the history lesson makes for the most interesting videos out there. Thank you, Stefan!
The Kilobyte is one of my go-to delays and has been since I got it in 2016. It's such a beauty, especially when coupled with the Meteore. Also, that Black Lodge sounded epic. Can't wait for a full demo of that!
I see your PT2399, and I love my Kilobyte and Megabyte with their Havok switches (SOUTH CAROLINA REPRESENT), but I gotta raise you the MN3005. A bit of apples and oranges as it's a true analog chip, but they ARE both delay chips and I just love the gooey analog-ness you get from them. I will forever say that the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall is the most beautiful sounding guitar effect in the world. The tone you get from it and Thermae are simply perfect. Tonal Recall and Wampler's Dual Fusion are my two desert island pedals. You DO make a strong case for PT2399's though. Incredible playing as always, Stefan! Love it!
Happy you liked the video. Means a lot. I'm not here to say that this chip is better than others. The video was simply made to explain the massive impact the PT2399 had and continues to have on the pedal scene as we know it today. Don't think a lot of builders we know today would have existed without it. It's just super affordable, easy to implement and easy to make sound great. Bucket Brigade chips are way more finicky and way more expensive, but they do sound good.
I was so close to getting the Space Spiral. I had it in my hand, but ended up getting the Grand Orbiter instead - which is the absolute best phaser I've ever played - but man I love delay and reverb. I've been lusting after the Echo Dream for a while now. It sounds great. I also dig that white guitar with the Bigsby you're playing. Looks very cool.
Cheers, man! And I totally agree, Grand Orbiter is an absolutely phenomenal phaser. But you definitely need some delay to go with those lush phaser sweeps 😊👍
love your videos this ,channel is perfect I could nerd for hours learning about pedals . thank you for the hard work that goes into each video. SO I totally Bought the echo dream 2 and the Absolute Destruction this Saturday at the pedal makers event reverb had In Chicago and Oliver Ackermann himself was at the DBA booth so I put on the headphones click both pedals on and proceed to play like someone who just drove 4 hours there and 3 seconds into it Oliver Lowers the gain a smidge and its then I realize the poor bastard had headphones of the pedal board too.couldsnt help but laugh and went to noodling while he moved the settings around and didn't take a min for me to say yeah I've heard enough I NEED these .
Ooh analog delays! There is something warm and haunting at the same time about them..! Of course your fantastic taste in sound and your musicality help a lot to accentuate their characteristics!
Man LOVE the guitar during 'Electro Man....where can i get one of those?Didn't know pt2399 could do all that! I've got a couple in stuff that don't sound very good..hey let us know of any more underrated chips...
It's a Baum Wingman. Check them out, they make amazing instruments. And yeah, the PT2399 is a great chip. A lot of builders are using it for lo-fi pedals these days. It's extremely versatile.
Thought I’d see the Skreddy Echo in there. The way that can sit on the verge of oscillation but not tip over is just magical. The Ibanez DE7 is the only other pedal that comes close that I’ve played.
One thing to keep in mind is that with such rudimentary chips as the PT2399, the analogue components are going to shape it a lot more. Like with most digital solutions, it still needs things like low pass filters and the likes in the chips, before you get into any other colouring external components does. I'd love to know EXACTLY why it sounds like that though, compared to other delays.
Please let me know which delay was your favorite out of the bunch! And please consider leaving a like, comment or even sharing the video with your friends. Every action just goes such a long way. THANK YOU FOR BEING AWESOME
Always enjoying your demos, came to this one because of the Electroman. Your sense of melody is stellar and you really make good use of all the pedals you've demoed - have you released any music of your own (or with a band)??
Excellent and Dreamy video, as per usual! That Black Lodge sounded GORGEOUS! I hope your buddy is ready for the onslaught of Delay Hounds knocking at their email! My recent and quickly ascending the ranks PT2399 Delay is the DEMEDASH T120 Videotape Delay, recreating VHS-degredation. I had a deluxe(trails/slam switch) and a normal and kept the normal-it just had more mojo. You would fall in love instantly, as I did.Have you played one?
Happy you liked the Black Lodge. It's killer! I hope that a lot of people pick one up, because I love Willem, and I want his business to thrive. He deserves it. No, I haven't tried a T120, but it does look very cool.
Cheers, man! Happy you enjoyed it. And yes, the Electroman is incredible. It seriously sound as good as most high quality true analog Bucket Brigade delays.
ThePedalZone Perfect. I enjoy your chord voicings so knowing where we’re starting from helps get me along when I go to learn some of your progressions vs trying to figure the tunings out.
Wow! Would love to hear more of the Black Lodge- sounds awesome! Really liked the Death By Audio too..oh hell, what can say- I love them all!! You again have provided a great demo and extremely interesting info. Keep up the great work!!
Very nice, Death By Audio = A Place To Bury Strangers, the lead Oliver Ackerman is an awesome music and a very talented audio/electronics engineer apparently.
Fantastic demo as usual. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of pt2399 delays? I know of, besides the pedals demo'd here, Wampler Faux Tape Echo, Mad Professor Deep Blue, Skreddy Echo, Keeley Mag Echo. Can anyone tell me of any others?
Stefan, I know I am a few years late seeing this clip and I am overwhelmed as I am loving the Caroline Kilobyte but think the DBA Echo Dream 2 may be the way to go for a shoegaze pedal board I am in the process of building. Thoughts ? Any feedback is gladly appreciated, cheers and enjoy the Holidays!
I am totally ignorant in these topics, and this might come as a dumb question but, if it's a digital chip, does it generate latency in the signal? I mean, does both the original signal and processed signal are traduced to 1's and 0's, processed and transformed again into an analog signal? or only the processed signal? Thank you for any insight!
@@thepedalzone I've had my Kilobyte for a couple years now, definitely a favorite. It currently sits before every other pedal on my board except the tuner and the freqout, because it feeds into dirt really, really well.
@@thepedalzone For sure, when I first saw this tittle of this RUclips, I became excited and then I also thought...I'm truly a complete music pedal nerd guy...big time! Lol
Another great video Stefan! Just wondering if you ever tried any of the Gurus Echosex pedals. And if so, what did you think of them? I think those are PT2399-based too.
If you had to choose between the Space Spiral, Kilobyte, and the Electroman which would it be? I’m really stuck on the fence about which one to pick up…
That's a tough one, man! They are all great delay pedals. So it really depends on what you need. Electroman MkII is 100% the most versatile of the bunch and has an incredible sound. If I didn't know it was digital, then my ears would tell me it's analog. Just sounds rad. Kilobyte is very reminiscent of an old Memory an, so if you need a slightly brighter delay with the ability to add in some Tape-like grit from its pre-amp, then that could be worth considering. The Electroman has an fx-loop though, so you can easily patch in dirt pedals there, if you want gritty repeats... or whatever pedals you like, if you wanna get experimental. Space Spiral is if you want to capture more vintage-inspired tape or oil-can tones. I have dedicated demos for all of these pedals on my channel. Perhaps it would help your decision making if you checked those out? Because this video doesn't give a full feature rundown. It's just a quick look at my faves within this delay category. I know this doesn't help, but I really can't make the decision for you. Only YOU know what YOU need to make YOUR music :) And thank you for the kind words. Truly means the world to me
Thanks Stefan. I’ve been leaning towards the Electroman for a while. It’s a bonus that I’m from Canada and so is SGFX. I own a bunch of Earthquaker pedals that I really enjoy, so the Space Spiral seemed like a good choice. As for the Kilobyte, all the demos I’ve watched really make it sound nice. Also, my OCD really likes top mounted jacks, so EQD and Caroline are really appealing. Thanks again.
@@saminglis5860 Hey man, did you finally go after one of them? I've got a Space Spiral (and a Gray Channel) on my way right now and I'm excited. I went for the Space Spiral because I liked the fact that at lower time settings it sounds sort of like a reverb. I had a hard time between that one and the Adineko by Catalinbread but I ultimately chose the Space Spiral because it felt more like the delays I'm used to (the Adineko is a really faithful recreation of Oil Can delays, with all the good and some of the quirks). My current delay is a EHX Canyon and it's good and versatile delay but it wasn't until recently that I found some sounds I really really like, so I'm pumped to pair them both up (and use the Canyon's loop function into the EQD SS). Let me know if you got any of them and what your thoughts are!
Of course I haven't!.... And I promise to keep your almost UNNATURALLY DEEP love for La Croix and Adam Sandler movies a secret.... Oh, wait... Forget that I wrote that ;)
This cheap "Analog" pedal I bought has the pt2399. IMO, they should've named it analog-style delay. It'll Self-oscillate forever and a few other things so I guess that makes up for it. Lol I'm really wondering if you can make your own stereo delay setup with two delay pedals and a y-cable and 2 separate amplifiers? Or however you would set it up without a ground loop?
Hi Stefan! Did Caroline Megabyte already be released when you made this video? Would you put him on that list? Do you have a preference between Megabyte and Kilobyte? Thank you!! Best regards!
Well, you’re obviously something of an expert. I know pedals are your main thing but, as a novice, I’ve found myself somewhat addicted to Moog’s Model D iOS app. While I detect that the filter cut-off freq and contour may be a little harsh (lacking fuzzy warmth) I’m otherwise really impressed. Are you familiar with it? How do you think it fares?
Hi Stefan, I’ve got one more question for you. How does the Space Spiral compare to a standard analog delay? Are they close or completely different? Right now I have a Carbon Copy (which I really love)! But since the Space Spiral has some more capabilities I thought I should ask you about it.
Space Spiral is more crisp and percussive than a classic analog delay, which is more round and washy. The Space Spiral will definitely be able to create sounds the Carbon Copy can’t.
This is long overdue. You are a gift to guitar players and musicians. Thank you
Gosh! Thank you so much!

Cheers, man! Happy you enjoyed it. And yes, the Electroman is incredible. It seriously sound as good as most high quality true analog Bucket Brigade delays.
Technology shapes music. Excellent example.
Cheers, man!
Nice vid. Much enjoyed. Didn’t see the tunings in the description though. What are the axes tuned to?
Cheers, man! All the guitars are in Drop D. Nothing fancy 😊
Cheers, man! Really happy you enjoyed the video 😊🙏
and there is the Sagan delay too, which also has three PT2399 chips
Must try Skreddy Echo! Also a pt2399 and it sound epic after playing so much boutiques
Could be fun to try
Very nice, Death By Audio = A Place To Bury Strangers, the lead Oliver Ackerman is an awesome music and a very talented audio/electronics engineer apparently.
Yeah, Oli is the best. Such a sweet and kind man.
Another GREAT video. One of your best, I think. Fascinating. I just clicked to check it out for a few minutes, and watched all the way to the end.
I’m deeply honored to hear you think it’s one of my best vids. Means a lot, man! 🙏
Is there another video coming on the reverb chip based on that last pedal? I really love that reverb!
Not currently planned, but would be a fun project for the future 😊
Caroline kilobyte is the favourite delay I ever bought...Wish I never sold it...
Bummed to hear you had to let it go. It’s a really good delay.
I see PT2399, I click.
Well that’s definitely the first time I’ve heard that. Happy to hear you’re into this beautiful lo-fi chip as well 😊👌
@@thepedalzone I've had my Kilobyte for a couple years now, definitely a favorite.
Lol
I agree. It’s a great chip. In some ways it may be the best
Another great video Stefan! Just wondering if you ever tried any of the Gurus Echosex pedals. And if so, what did you think of them? I think those are PT2399-based too.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I’ve tried those. They’re nice delays, but just not right for me and my context
Great sounds! I am definitely curious about the Echo Dream. Does the Micro Dream have the same chip too?
Thank you! Yeah, the Micro Dream uses the same chip. It’s the exact same core delay sound as the Echo Dream, just without the fuzz and modulation
If you had to choose between the Space Spiral, Kilobyte, and the Electroman which would it be? I’m really stuck on the fence about which one to pick up…
Totally forgot, love your channel. Thanks for all your hard work and amazing playing.
The Hungry Robot The Wash v2 utilizes this chip, and is exceptional. Ambient lusciou tones, and can get thunderstormy
Heard good things about it 👍
hmmm have you been reading my search history? this is spot on to what I was looking for. great content......highly suspicious though.
Lol
I'm really wondering if you can make your own stereo delay setup with two delay pedals and a y-cable and 2 separate amplifiers? Or however you would set it up without a ground loop?
I'd take an El Capistan over any of these any day of the week and twice on a Sunday, the Kilo/Megabyte is pretty sweet though.
Thanks dude
Mr Echo by Sib belongs hurr tho
Cheers! Never tried that pedal.
Have you tried the Ibanez DE7? Thing of beauty that. I almost dont wanna say anything because then there'll be ANOTHER video about how awesome it is
@@bernarddoherty2303 - Yes, I own a DE7. It's a killer delay pedal.
I love that shirt.
Thanks! You can get one from Old Blood Noise 👍
I really do prefer PT2399 delays, rather than BBD based delays.
I totally understand. They get really close to actual BBD sounds, and they are way easier to control
Hi Stefan! Did Caroline Megabyte already be released when you made this video? Would you put him on that list? Do you have a preference between Megabyte and Kilobyte? Thank you!! Best regards!
I've learnt that I need a Death By Audio Echo Dream 2
That is great takeaway from this video 😊👌
i have learned exactly the same ;) ... thnks stefan
Great video! What studio monitors are those? Would you recommend them?
Cheers, man! It’s Dynaudio LYD7. They are incredible. Can’t recommend them enough. Dynaudio is the pinnacle of studio monitoring 😊👍
Definitely a vibe I love, but I have a hard time finding artists with this kind of sound. Any name of bands or genres?
Oh wow the Electroman...
Yeah, man! It's sooooo good! I have a full demo of it on my channel, if you want to dive further into its syrupy sweet soundscapes :)
Does someone know any schematic of one of the delays? Would be interested to have a look
The Model D app is killer. I love it!
@@thepedalzone Yeah, it’s a real problem, almost as bad as RUclips 😂
4:12 Minerva - Deftones
Definitely not intended if there's any similarities. Deftones rule though 🙌
@@thepedalzone Oh, I meant to say "It reminded me of.." All good brother. Awesome demo as always. Keep playing :)
Five faves bigmuff types/clones
Don’t know if I like that circuit enough to have 5 faves 😊
The EQD Hoof is 100% my favorite though
It would be nice if he would tell us all the guitars hes using and DAW set up
Yooo! All of the gear I use in my videos is always mentioned in the video descriptions here on RUclips 😊
