When my Dad passed away, the hospital gave me a little clear bottle with a small yellow ribbon. Inside was a EKG strip with Dad's last recorded heart beats. After the Honor Guard presented us with his flag. I put his flag in a case and tucked his bottle of heart beats in the lower front corner of the frame. It is beautiful.

That was so very nice. I've never heard of the hospital doing that. My Dad was a WW2 Army Veteran and passed away at home. I was with him because I was doing the hospice medicine. The moment he passed away, his hospital bed crashed down and scared me because I had dozed off. It was very weird because adjustable hospital beds don't just crash down andI had just given him some medicine about 30 minutes before.

Interesting. There is a channel, Sidestep Adventures, a couple of fellas explore Georgia back roads and discover lost, abandoned cemeteries. Many of them family cemeteries, some go back 200 years. The families have dispersed, died out or the interred are so far removed in the past that they are simply forgotten. Reminds me of Psalm 103: 15-16 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer.
That is an excellent device. 100 years from now there may be events that seem unlikely today.... earthquakes in areas not prone to them today, biblical flooding, an asteroid strike, World War III and resultant bombardment/ nuclear attack, etc. Good to think long term on what a cemetery may be exposed to a couple hundred years down the road and the effects on the buried.
it seems like its on the high end price caskets along with the gasket .A simple ideal maybe a serial number on the Casket like they do on a car motor and a database with all the info Just a thought.
Thanks for the video Kari, I've heard of this. I know you said that not all caskets have them, but the ones that do, do you have to ask the funeral director to fill it out with the deceased information or do the automatically do that. How does THAT part work?
I watch a lot of Forensic Files, and it crossed my mind while you were describing this, why not add a very small amount of the deceased's DNA, such as hair with the root attached, or just a tiny speck of the end of the pinky? (no worse than when cutting veggies for dinner). With the increase of murders we have nowadays, it could be very helpful to track down who done it. Also, for those with enough $$, future grandkids could track down their heritage. i.e.= I did my father's dna cheek swab only to find our last name doesn't match the typical haplogroup for our surname. I would love to open my GGG-grandfathers casket to see if his haplogroup matches my dads. I won't, but I wish I could and this way the deceased could be undisturbed.
Nothing surprising we are all appointed to die unexpectedly at a moment in time.. whats impt is if you are prepared to your journey in the next life coz its not over yet, its a choice to make whether eternity in heaven or damnation to death in the lake of fire.
Was wondering how long those tubes have been used .....i live in Scranton Pa and back in 1972 we had a really bad flood and caskets become unearthed did they have em then.....i was maybe 7 and horrified about the stories!!!!
Kari can you give information on donating your body to science? ( cost, where would they ship you, what do they do after they are done with you, are they in short supply)
What do you do when the casket isnt enough or the vault to keep out what would comprimise the body or the info in the tube? Could you even do anything?
My parents went with the El cheapo caskets, so I bet they didn't have one, the funeral home told me they would have my dads death dates engraved but they never did
40 years ago a small piece of paper was included in the tube to be completed by the family. No one bothered to fill them out then. I wonder if they're still included.
Hey Kari. My name is Andy and I'm from Canada. I've always been curious about the functions of funeral homes and want to thank-you for all the behind the scene matters about it. I'll admit I've watched your videos for years but never commented until now. My grandfather died 1996 at the age of 99 entering his 100th year. He did not have a memory tube but had gold plaque engraved his name and secured on the lid by his feet. It may fade away overtime but he's buried in a flat area with no hills and lakes nearby so I'm sure his resting place is safe. In today's funerals, I haven't noticed any name plaques on caskets and most likely have memory tubes. Question I have for you is, have name plaques were used during your time as a director? Any other answers is appreciated. Thank you Kari.
@@KaritheMortician It looks like a name plate you see in offices but it's much smaller. Maybe it's called a casket plate. It's clued on the casket by the feet of it. Does that help? I know there are name plates on the inside during the wake but this one is on the outside.
When my grandparents passed in the early 70's, their caskets had little plates attached to the lids with their names engraved on them. Is this something that isn't done, or available, anymore?
@@KaritheMortician Ok thank you. I personally want a funeral pyre when I go. That would be my choice for a funeral. Thank you for the great content .. very interesting and informative
That's so interesting, I've never heard of this. I don't know if you can answer this. It's an odd question. My parents had a double plot. I assumed it was side by side but it turned out to be one on top of the other. Now my dad died in 1977, my mom in 2017. How deep do they bury the first casket? Because when we buried my mom, the hole was dug by a backhoe and the bottom of the hole had big chunks of wood in it. I had the impression that they smashed my dad's casket and scooped it out. It's just been bothering me, is that possible? How long do caskets last? It was oak if I remember correctly. Is there a standard number of feet they dig? I was expecting to see the top of my dad's casket. I don't see the accuracy with a backhoe being that great and the hole was deeper than I expected.
Seeing your response that they dug into the same grave? So yes it could have been a wooden barrier put in on top of your dad's casket as a marker for them to stop digging.
@@KaritheMortician I like the thought of a wooden barrier more than what I was thinking. When we looked in we didn't see any bones or hardware from his casket, just crushed wood chunks, not tree roots. Thank you that makes me feel a bit better. I was thirteen when my dad died suddenly and really don't know if it was double depth. It just seemed they dug very deep for my mom in 2017.
That is so sweet of them to do that. I am grateful to your dad for his service to our country.

That is awesome!
The tubes should be required, sure would save a lot of guess work after floods.
Yes!
It would certainly be a handy thing in areas with a high water table or which are prone to flooding like Louisiana.
There are not that many that happen though to standardize something like that
In New Zealand where I live almost every funeral I've attended the casket has a name plate on with their full name date of birth and date of death
I dont think I've attended one that there wasnt some kind of identification on the casket but I have never heard of the tubes here before I think it's a great idea
Unless you live in New Orleans its pretty much a non issue.

Nothing surprising we are all appointed to die unexpectedly at a moment in time.. whats impt is if you are prepared to your journey in the next life coz its not over yet, its a choice to make whether eternity in heaven or damnation to death in the lake of fire.
I'm gonna do a cost saver, have my SSN painted on the top that glows in the dark
That's a grt idea.is there one in all caskets?
No not in all of them
Never heard of that
:)
I once saw this on an episode of csi apparently if something happens the body in the casket can be identified
Correct
Wow thats reallyneat , I had no idea !!!
Is it common w every casket throughout the years or just recently established ?
I am gonna find out when they started
Was wondering how long those tubes have been used .....i live in Scranton Pa and back in 1972 we had a really bad flood and caskets become unearthed did they have em then.....i was maybe 7 and horrified about the stories!!!!
I am looking for that info
I knew about those but honestly I can't tell you if my dad's casket had that or if it didn't.
I really don't even remember and that was only in 2005.
Gotcha :)
Kari can you give information on donating your body to science? ( cost, where would they ship you, what do they do after they are done with you, are they in short supply)
You have to get accepted by the program ahead so you know exactly where you go. Call your closest med school.
Your very pretty!🌹🌹🌹
Oh thank you!
@@KaritheMortician no mam, thank you!!🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹
What do you do when the casket isnt enough or the vault to keep out what would comprimise the body or the info in the tube? Could you even do anything?
Track cemetery records or check the deceased for a tag
My parents went with the El cheapo caskets, so I bet they didn't have one, the funeral home told me they would have my dads death dates engraved but they never did
Great idea! What year did that start?
Not sure but I will check into it and find out
I never realized that caskets had memory tubes!
Not all do but you will now look for them!
@@KaritheMortician Yup and I'll think of you while looking for memory tube! :)
40 years ago a small piece of paper was included in the tube to be completed by the family. No one bothered to fill them out then. I wonder if they're still included.
Interesting
The paper with the information can be laminated to protect it, just in case.
It won't roll up if laminated though
@@KaritheMortician there's very thin lamination, clear contact paper is an alternative 🥰
Is the information sheet laminated?
No it is not
How long has this been in use? Great thing.
At least the 25 years I have been around the business :)
@@KaritheMortician Thank you. I have never heard of them nor do i know if any of my deceased family have had one.
I don't understand the question I am sorry.
@@KaritheMortician It looks like a name plate you see in offices but it's much smaller. Maybe it's called a casket plate. It's clued on the casket by the feet of it. Does that help? I know there are name plates on the inside during the wake but this one is on the outside.
Just curious Kari, why do caskets have locks? In case it should accidentally be inverted?
Yes just to keep the lid from opening during movement
@@KaritheMortician Such as in transit by hearse, train, aircraft, or even moved from the hearse to the casket stand at the cemetery.
Does a casket eventually fill with water? I've always wondered this?
Yes sometimes
@@KaritheMortician well I'm getting cremated lol.
Roughly what year did the concept of the tube start?
I am trying to get that info from some casket companies
When my grandparents passed in the early 70's, their caskets had little plates attached to the lids with their names engraved on them. Is this something that isn't done, or available, anymore?
Yes some vaults do have a name plate
Never heard of it. Natural burial, no casket and no embalming so right back to the earth.
Is this a practice in the U.S only? I’m in U.K. and think a memory tube is a nice gesture
It is only some
Casket companies
There would be a concrete vault so you shouldn’t have to worry about your dad. I’m sorry for your loss!
@@elephant_guy2158 not here the caskets are put directly into the ground and buried. There's no concrete involved.
Thank you for sharing
Was it a double depth grave?
Seeing your response that they dug into the same grave? So yes it could have been a wooden barrier put in on top of your dad's casket as a marker for them to stop digging.
@@KaritheMortician I like the thought of a wooden barrier more than what I was thinking.
When we looked in we didn't see any bones or hardware from his casket, just crushed wood chunks, not tree roots. Thank you that makes me feel a bit better.
I was thirteen when my dad died suddenly and really don't know if it was double depth.
It just seemed they dug very deep for my mom in 2017.
