    I think this was a clear and valuable description of a problem becoming more prevalent today one of the main issues not addressed in this video is that this problem can become chronic and permanently seriously limit a freediver's depth potential .
    For more information please see our blog on this subject ,how to Anallise this problem ,treat it or better yet prevent it . please see the link in your private message as I cant post it here

    Thanks for the tips, i recently had got the same problem. I made a drop around 25M while spearfishing. After i surface about 2 minutes later i started to cough and have shortness of breath. I notice some blood in my spit and trouble breathing. Every time i toke a deep breath i began to cough rapidly. I know for sure that i was looking down while descending to the bottom and while ascending i was looking up. It took me 2 weeks to recovery. Thank You again man, coming from Hawaii

    Thanks for posting, most people wouldn't probably want to talk about the dive sessions that go south. I wanted to add here, if you are doing continuous dives to sub-25 m with any bottom time, you are also risking decompression sickness. I dive with a liquivision watch that indicates the risk for DCS and even on dives to 20-25 meters of 1:30 - 2 minutes it tells me to stay shallow after a while (meaning dive 10 - 15 m on the next dive). If I do bounce dives to 30 m it is fine. Repeated bounce dives to 35 and it will tell me to stay shallow after about 10 dives. DCS may be more common in freedivers than we think, the effects (head ache, light headed, tingling fingers) are usually just discarded as having cold hands after diving, being dehydrated or something else. (This may also pertain to +nick balasz his headache).

      Interesting, never heard of that function on a watch.

    • @LucaFreediver

      It's a Liquivision Xen, and contains a DCS algorithm developed by Eric Fattah who does long deep dives enough to have DCS be a serious issue.

    The injury only occurred 4 days ago, so I'm not sure - I have heard people say 3 weeks to heal. I'm going to hope its only 1 week, because I want to go diving this weekend.

    The dive in this video was: 1. yes. 2. yes 3. 24 hours. 4. same all day. 5 no. However I had gotten sqeezed again last week.. I did about 6-7 29 meter dives in the morning. No blood. Then went diving again in the after noon - all 20 meter dives - urge to cough after 4 or 5 dives, and coughed bright red blood. Very disappointing, because the 29m dives were fine... Im still recoving from the recent squeeze, I can still feel in my chest slight discomfort from it... especially after running.

    Hi, I would like to compare notes on NON-lung related squeeze: 1. did you have any sensation or desire to cough after the injury? 2. did the blood appear on the first cough-up after the dive, or several dives after the one that you may remember being stressful? 3. How long did the blood remain in your cough-up after stopping diving? 4. was more blood in the coughup the next moring, or about the same througout the day? 5. Did you have any other symptoms (sore throat, fever, headaches, dizziness?)

    Hey Dean,
    I love all your videos, great job! Btw, how is your recovery after this injury nowadays? I hope you are 100% fine now! Be safe!

      I was talking abot this trachea squeeze here in this video. But nice to hear that you are ok anyway! :)

  • @freediverhd
    @freediverhd  11 лет назад

    Hey man. Part of the point I wanted to make at the beginning is that is not actually lung squeeze. Its trachea squeeze. its basically a squeeze in your throat, caused by a combination of pressure, and moving/stretching your neck. I think any extreme neck movement or stretch beyond even 15m can cause this. I did get a pretty bad squeeze in january 2013 though, at 40m... that could have been true lung squeeze.. i coughed a ton of blood, and struggled to breathe.(will continue in next comment)

    Thank you for sharing your experience. Of course stretching at depth is no good (one rule in the 20 rules for freediving is "never look down while descending, never look up while ascending").
    But I've got another experience from my own for your reference: I've got (laryx/trachea) squeezes... in the... pool, with just 4m depth! That's the result from my combination of empty-lung dive + contraction!!!
    So, be careful with STRETCH & CONTRACTION at depth, plzzzz!

    Just thought ill add that i got a trachea squeeze diving between 5-7m. What i learned from this is regular controlled neck stretching can go a long way in preventing such injuries. Great depths is not a requirement for attaining these injuries. Peace

      +Juan Cronje Thanks for sharing that. I have had it at depths of like 12-15m.... too much looking around. All the best with your diving.

    As for packing - I never pack while diving - and for 1 simple reason - it's impossible to pack with a snorkel in your mouth - so basically, in my opinion, when doing true free diving swimming open ocean - its impossible to pack. I have started jogging recently though - and I do do some light packing and stretches on my lungs when I warm up before I go for a jog. (i just do it before running, because I'm also stretching my legs, etc, so I just do some freediving stretches at the same time)

    •  5 лет назад

      impossible? I pack with a snorkel on, what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for your comment! Sorry to hear about the lung squeeze. Let me know how long it takes you to recover. I'm still suffering from this injury after 2 months - every time I dive, even to 10 meters, I start coughing blood again.

    Hey thanks for the quick reply! I wanted to ask another question that pertains to injury and figured this would be the video to ask on. I recently got a bad 'head ache', I call it that because I'm pretty sure that's what it is. But basically after a 50m run I came up and the back of my head was throbbing and it's almost completely gone two days later but still hurts a bit if I strain when I'm holding my breath. I was dumb and wanted to film my first 50 and rushed it. Any similar experience?

    Hey dean, first of all I just want to say that your videos are really good and that ilearn a lot about freediving from them, I'm a swimmer (train nine times a week) and I started to do freediving recently. Can you please explain how to prevent pressure injuries like lung squeeze and what are the rules that I have too keep while freediving? Thank you in advance

  • @freediverhd
    @freediverhd  11 лет назад

    Seriously never heard of that. Doesn't sounds like one of the common injuries. Headache in the front of the head can be due to the airspaces in the sinuses... but back of the head?? Hopefully its gone next time you dive. If it persists, maybe I can ask around for u see if anyone else had heard of this.

    how long would it take to recover from this? and if there are no changes in your diving technique, would there be serious, irreversible injury, possibly making it unable to freedive again?

    Hi Dean, I am a freediver as well and I've been watching all your videos.The thing that frightens me is that you can have a lung squeeze at 25 m. I've been searching a lot on the internet about lung squeeze. Some of the freedivers guess that it could be from packing. Did you pack that particular dive? And do you pack regularly (dry and wet) to stretch the lungs?

    i only spit blood once, i think what ypu only have to do is wait a few days and it´s ok. i have a video with a simulation of what happens to our lungs for example at -55m check it out, it´s realy interesting

    No, you wont get any injuries as such. Blackouts would be your biggest risk... that is death if you don't have a buddy with you.
