- This is not a how to video. In this video I tune my Tama Superstar 16x16" floor tom (all birch shell) as low as I can get it. The heads on the floor tom are: Remo Clear Ambassador on the resonant side and a Remo Coated Ambassador on the batter side.
Take a moment to like and subscribe. Thank you! :)
The kit is a Tama Superstar series made in Japan in the early 80's

So glad I found this absolute diamond mine of a channel. Eternally subscribed
Thank you!!!!! You just made my day!! I appreciate you subscribing! :)
Beautiful sounding kit......
Thank you! Love this kit! :)
I have the same finish on my tama maple kit. Nice!
Awesome! I've always liked the look of that finish. Dig it! :)
O som ficou fantástico !!!
Thank you! Glad you like it! :)
I use the Pearl suspension feet on two of my kits for years and they work fantastic, never looking back. Yes, your ft legs look exactly like mine, 3/8” or 9.4mm. You should be fine.
Thank you! Ordering a set now. :)
This was interesting. Thanks for posting. Different subject - do you have any Giant Beat cymbals?
Thank you! I've owned a couple of Giant Beat cymbals. I think they're great! :)
Similar video for a 14x14? Mine perpetually sounds like a laser in a video game
The closest size I have to a 14x14 is a 12x15. I'll see if anyone I know has a 14x14 that I can borrow so I can do a video.
Your description of the sound you're getting is hilarious!! HAHA!!
😂
This is what I want to get right. I have tuned by ear/feel for years and bought a drum dial and it does work for repeatability but for super low stuff it's hard to do. They also make a drum tuner that goes by frequency. Have you ever tried tuning devices before.
A friend of mine had a drum dial and I found it to be very time consuming. I personally like tuning by ear with occasionally using a piano to get an exact pitch. Very rare that I do that though. The only reason I might consider getting a Tune-Bot is for the times when someone asks for specifics regarding how a drum is tuned. :)
Great job Brad! I like both tunings. You tune drums they way I like them. Resonant and ringy. The stage volume, amps ect with soak up that ring anyway. How are you liking the Cymbal Resonance System on your stands?
Thank you! I've always liked the sound of drums that are open and resonant!
The Cymbal Resonance System is fantastic! I honestly don't like playing my cymbals without them now. They make a massive difference in how the cymbal sounds and how they feel to play. Highly recommend them. :)
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Thanks for the reply. What is your opinion on the dead thuddy trend of today? It blows my mind that they spend thousands on drums with great bearing edges, state of the art mounting systems, all to put some sort of goo on the to deaden them?
@@RemoWilliams-jg4yb I personally don't care for that type of sound. When drums are treated like that I'm pretty sure that the box the drums were shipped in would probably sound the same if not better than the actual drum. As far as putting anything on a drum to deaden them, no thank you. With the only exception being a tea towel when you're going for that sound. I'm only talking about toms. Snare drums and bass drums are a different story. But even with those two drums I prefer wide open. But I can't always get away with that. Sometimes the track requires pillows and wallets. Haha!! :)
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Agreed yet again. This trend of quintuple ply drum heads and muting devices, WE were doing that years ago with old drum heads, duct tape and the like. I agree that there is a time and place for it, but I stayed with an "Ambassador" style drum head for years. To me, it is hard to beat the sound of a 10 mil drum head. I followed Simon Phillips in my youth and he stated that it is the cleanest sound source and I tend to agree. I love watching other drummers with a wide open sound, and you have that in droves!
sounds great... !!
Thank you! :)
i play a 82 superstar and the suspension feet fit perfectly
Thank you! I appreciate you letting me know that they will fit. I'll order a set today. And congrats on your kit! What color and sizes do you have?
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad cherry red gloss - 12*11,13*12,16*16,22*16 ;)
@@kaidrager6213 Nice!! Great finish too!
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad yeah - i love it
The thing people don't think about and I cannot figure it out, is how the kit appears to sound, vs how it sounds. You want it to sound like a recording? Wear.ear.plugs!!!!
Most drummers and musicians ears are shot cuz they're stupid!
"My ears where ringing but I'll just continue to not wear protection for really loud shlt I'm causing to my OWN ears"
When your in a bedroom or office, your drums from behind the throne are gunna sound like shlt. Wear earplugs and tune your drums. Especially the floor tom. It's gunna sound like a studio when they're in, and gunna sound like total ass with them out. It's just the nature of the drums. It's either that or you go electric. Or very dampened, and you get those trays with the foam in them that sit under the head, and you'll have a semi quieted, short but dead note that sounds like a studio. The drums simply throw the sound, and 9 times out 10, a lot won't sound great from the throne, and when you get someone else to play them, and walk away from the kit, all the sudden they sound great
Protecting your ears is definitely important. The headphones I use (Sennheiser HD 280 Pro) work very well for protecting my ears. And like you said, it makes the kit sound great! :)
Did you not see the other floor tom?🙄🙄
If there is only 1 floor tom on a kit, then get an 18 diameter x 16 depth floor tom. The purpose of a floor tom is to have low end thunder, and the 18 floor tom is the only tom drum which serves that purpose while remaining in it's correct tuning range. Ditch all the new hype about small drums and get back to old school reality, because unless you have drum triggers (or electronic means of sorts)......the concept behind acoustic drum pitch and it's relative size hasn't changed since the beginning of time. And it NEVER WILL, NO MATTER THE ADVERTISING DOGMA ABOUT SELECT SHELLS/WOOD AND LATEST HYPE SURROUNDING DRUMS. Period.
Gotta have that low end! I have a 16x16 and a 16x18 and they both sound amazing. I love tuning them low and I also love tuning them high too. Some tracks require them to be tuned higher in order to bring the drums and the track to life. For certain tracks I need the floor tom to sound like a tympani. For that I need to crank them up as high as they can go. For me there is no "correct" tuning. Only what works for the track I'm currently working on. :)
I've got a 70's Rogers kit with a 16x16 floor tom. Shook an entire theatre last night. Proper tuning, 6-8 Cotton balls inside the drum resting on the reso head, bam. Don't necessarily need the 18 if you don't want it.
