    I have a birch mapex kit from the early to mid nighty's and it makes me wonder if they are the same shells as they are Japanese made. I like them but they are power tom sizes and I want to cut them down, Sizes are 10x10,12x12,13x13,14x14,16x16 and 16x18. Do you like cast hoops and if so do you think it's worth doing the batter side and rest side.

    • @RecordingDrumsWithBrad
      @RecordingDrumsWithBrad Час назад

      I bet that kit sounds great! The shells are a bit deep for my taste too. What depth are you looking to cut them down to? Traditional sizes? 8x12, 9x13... For the toms I like triple flange 1.6mm hoops. The lighter the hoop the more resonance you get from the drum. With that said the Gretsch recipe is amazing with their die-cast hoops. It's difficult to know for sure what is going to work best with a set of shells. That's when ya gotta experiment. Which is one of my favorite things to do! Let me know how it goes. :)

    You can get any snare to sound decent with good heads. Some drums have better hardware that will last longer and handle temperature fluctuations better. But a good drummer with a good touch is going to sound good with almost any snare drum. All of the drums in this video sounded very similar and quite good.

    • @RecordingDrumsWithBrad
      @RecordingDrumsWithBrad День назад

      Thanks, Paul. I appreciate your thoughts. I agree with what you are saying and I would like to add to it a bit. Everything you said is true but there is a big difference in two areas between a poorly crafted snare and a high end snare -- how they feel when you are playing the drum, and what the microphone hears. They all have their own little something that makes them unique. When you find a snare that inspires you to play your best and it ends up sounding incredible on a track, then you know you've found your snare. :)

  • @bassplate
    @bassplate День назад

    The bubinga sounds ringy, but perhaps that differs from drum to drum (same model), as there's probably variation in the wood. And those overtones might get absorbed by guitar/keyboard sounds in a full-band setting.

    • @RecordingDrumsWithBrad
      @RecordingDrumsWithBrad День назад

      I agree. Most of the time when I'm mixing it's the overtones that give the track character. :)

    Wow Brad! I never expected you to devote an entire video to my tracks. Thank you so much for demonstrating your techniques and methodologies of getting the drums to sound like that. There are some “surgical” EQ maneuvers that I hadn’t thought of that I will try next time I do a recording. I do get that frequency around 290-ish on the snare out of there immediately haha. Your plug ins sound great. That “tambourine” sound you hear on the snare may be a drum key rattling on my accessory stand 😳. Definitely NOT supposed to be there. Thank you also for the shout out at the end. I appreciate that very much 🙂. I’ll be watching this a few times to pick up on some things for sure. Much respect and appreciation man, so very cool of you!

    • @RecordingDrumsWithBrad
      @RecordingDrumsWithBrad 3 дня назад

      Thank you! I'm a huge fan of the sound that a lot of drummers were getting in the 60's and early 70's. A lot of players still tuned there drums really high without any muffling. That, along with minimal miking, it allowed the drums to resonate and project tone for days. If you want this sound start by getting Remo Ambassador heads on the resonant and batter side. Tune them to the same pitch higher than you might think, where they are almost choked. That's a good start. :)
