I'm no bricklayer, just a jack of all chippy that's done lots of different stuff. I totally agree with you Charlie with the efficiency study, it makes all the difference. Nice tidy work mate, and great work. You're giving away diamonds with these vids ! 👏👍
I use your methods at college and the teacher says that my work has a superb finish. I studied the books like they're my bible and I used to take rubbish bricks home to practice with, but I think your videos have been the greatest help. I don't get alot of good advice on site's and I don't see many people that take pride in their work. I did alot of improving and it does make me sad that people just don't give a toss, but I am glad that there great trades people such as yourself spreading some wisdom. I had the best teacher when I picked up plastering as a kid, but the minute I started laying bricks I was in love. For whatever if is worth, I am grateful for your channel, you are the best teacher I have had for this trade and it has helped me become a better version of myself. Much respect 🙏
I'm a 63 Yr old bricklayer who served his time in the 70s. This was an era when there was a government boost in apprenticeship bricklaying. I served with some old timers who did not fart about with their compo like we do now, but also grey commons were outside leaf materials, and lightweight concrete blocks, or thermal items were inner leaf material. Now solid heavy duty concrete innerleaf with polystyrene sheets inner, and stupid outer leaf clay hollow bricks that take a ton of muck to bed up. How times have changed. I've had carpel tunnel ops on both wrists, permanent bad back with wet blocks weighing 3 stone. Bollocks to price work, steady as she goes, long time to state pension at 67yrs, shortly going up to 68yr old before eligible
Great video again young Sir. I work exactly the same way as you do same levels / profiles and same trowels. Efficiency is the key like you said . Super clean work every time we’ll done. I might buy that book for our apprentice.👍
It’s a coke or duck bill trowel, Great videos Charlie I enjoy watching you watch and the way you teach makes me wanna throw in the towel on a 15year roofing career and start as a brickie , cheers from down here in New Zealand
Great vlog Charlie ,the spreading technique is hundreds of yrs old it was ok when the bricks were of solid clay they haven’t moved with the times ,the brick is full of perforations now ,keep up the good work bringing the industry up to date
You are right about Trowels, I don't work with cement, all my work is heritage stuff with hotlime mortar, but I like the tile setter trowel for that less stress on your wrists.
I think the concentrated feb that’s in the gobbo these days makes it easier just to pick the muck up and not have to turn it over compared to the old plasticisers
My lad has just started a construction course and they supplied a kit and the gloves that were provided lasted 9 days, do u have a pair of gloves that you would recommend that last and are suitable for brickwork?
I’m obsessed with organising our working day at the moment and the book is great advise for anyone. Mine is in the post from eBay. Cheers be a good read whilst I’m coming to a from work in the van rather than being on my brain buzzer 📱
If you want me to be honest m8, as a 20yr experienced brick layer with a red seal (Canadian version of internationally recognized certification) your perps are straight up nearly empty when you layed them fast vs when you layed them slow they were proper full. 2 completely different qualities of product. Just my honest opinion. Great content and grats on the comp win.
I understand that's the desired outcome, but it's quite noticeable comparing both your replays. I personally find buttering the brick in hand ensures 100% full head joint oppose to risking it. Different strokes for different folks. @@CharlieCollison
Just a note on RSI/joint pain, a lot of lifting is a pull behind the spine not push in front; I work my ATGs, aductors & glutes, tibular aductors, rear delts and bracialis as do olympic weightlifters. Have to stretch regularly as well because your muscles expand and contract; too much contraction would cause small tears over time even in your back. Favourite channels for this are "The KneeOverToesGuy", "(olympian) Lu Xiaojun", "Clarence0 (clarence kennedy)".
Its all exercise at the end of the day whether brick laying or running or weight lifting etc etc. I have ridiculous endurance to the point people ask where I get it the energy from,, if you train and condition your body to do something itll do it easy eventually ,, same with brick laying and eating well.
i have been a bricklayer for 42 years, only one thing to say is adapt or die.. always new ways to build walls , just listen to all the tips given and use what suits you.
tilers trowel ?watched a vid on youtube years ago ,american bloke think name was gailbraith he was a time and motion man and if i rememer right he had some sort of hydraulic system on the scaffold that raised the bricks to eliminate bending and speed things up ,hope someone else has seen this and its not the beer got to me
Seen that Jack, he made lots of professions more efficient like in operating theatres, everything at hand and that’s where you get scrub nurses from…surgeons labourer👍🏻
We seem to be stuck with these wire cut crap bricks on housing sites, I lay exactly the same with them as you, traditional bricks I will lay more traditionally because you don't need as much muck.
It's a Coke Trowel Charlie, And i agree with being efficient makes perfect sense ,Why are people Rushing about wearing parts of the body that Could eventually stop you doing the job or make it hard for you to continue, Unnecessary moves add up and can cause you problems twisting about twice when you can do it in one is so much easier and watching someone doing it twice on & on is just bad practice, Where that person is going like the clappers and achieving a decent amount had he used the Collison method he would have done more and not knackered himself out, Basically Why make the job harder than it is ? . See you on the Next one Charlie / Amy.
Interesting experiment, the only thing I can see to criticize the faster way is the head joints aren't going to be as full as the traditional way. That's the only problem I can see with that. ..Maybe if special attention is paid to that, that issue can be overcome.
Even after your explanation. I still don't understand how you can lay that much before 2 o'clock! I've never laid 1000 bricks a day. 850 best. I didn't think I was slow.....but now......well I need to stack shelves in tesco. Sheesh
Bricklaying today is the Human definition of a Chicken in a battery farm ,It's just bang bang bang, Strecher bond, Strecher bond, Strecher bond just the same as a Chicken eating its corn from its cage . Its little beak pecking at corn. All these videos you have done and how many bonds have you done? It's not your fault i know that but Bricklaying is dying on its arse and so is the skill ,Where are the Gauged Arches and the tumbling in. The amount of times i was on jobs and guys would turn up and say there was no money on it..The real reason was they could not do it
I actually get these Mixed up but the one you have is a coke trowel ( no joke ) it’s very similar to the duckbill trowel which I believe is a bit longer thinner
As a landscaper I consider myself an all rounder in terms of the various types of work I do including brick and blockwork etc but I always try and improve and at 55 Im still picking up tips and tricks, really enjoy your stuff and thanks for taking the time to do this stuff!

Love this Charlie, efficiency is definitely the answer & it’s so simple. Less = more, remove all bad habits & get the job done

So many true words clay hollow bricks money saving, but again more is spent on making muck to lay them.
Concrete blocks not bricks, then fill the void with insulation....seems stupid to me....time will tell
Great content as always Charlie,64 years old now and watching your videos makes me want to get back and have another go,
Great video again young Sir. I work exactly the same way as you do same levels / profiles and same trowels. Efficiency is the key like you said . Super clean work every time we’ll done. I might buy that book for our apprentice.👍

Great video Charlie
Great content Charles
Nice one slick ..!
Where can I find the book Charlie? Great vid, loved the advice on trowel size.... A poignant reminder from old plasterers also.
I ain’t been ploughing my muck for a couple years.. been a revelation.. so much quicker, cleaner and can bump up or grind down a lot easier on blocks
I think the concentrated feb that’s in the gobbo these days makes it easier just to pick the muck up and not have to turn it over compared to the old plasticisers
