Glad you left this “what not to do” video because this is the type of stuff us newbies will likely do without realizing. The grinning and hitching is something I probably would not have thought to look for, and will make such a huge difference in outcome. I plan to watch the whole series prior to my landscape wall next summer (right now I am redoing my kitchen after watching DIY Renovision on RUclips). Your videos will save me thousands of dollars and give me a skill I will have for a lifetime. You are making a difference. I also make RUclips videos for my Cosmos Safari RUclips channel and I know how hard it is to put your work out there and the process it takes to make a quality video. Your time and effort are appreciated by the community.
Thanks buddy😁👍🏻 I have a hell of a lot of videos planned. Probably somewhere in the region of 100 all set out ready to film. Theres plenty more of this to come 👍🏻😁🧱
Great stuff I've been looking on RUclips for brickwork vids for a while now and they never talk through stuff it's always short edited vids with music over 😤 I've subbed to your channel and never looked back🤙🏼
You are a remarkably good teacher. Well done. You have enlightened me about how much care and precision goes into making a professional brick wall. I look at them now with a much greater appreciation of the skill involved. Thank you for opening my eyes!
Hawaiian Mason here,Love ur vids bud Im learning more n more everyday,I appreciate u showing us why not to do things certain ways because knowing why u shouldn't do things a certain way is really helpful as opposed to knowing that I cant do things a certain way but not knowing why.I hope that makes sense I appreciate all ur knowledge and Keep up the good work Brother!!🤙
You are so helpful in showing us problems that arise and proper methods. I'm beginning again on replacing a course of soldiers that crumbled around the perimeter of a cement porch. Had a lot of trouble last fall when the weather was starting to show snow flurries at times and I had to quit as it was only warm enough a few hours a day. Last fall the mortar would not stick to the brick when buttering. I guess I had dirty bricks as there was excess sand on the bricks from the brick yard and wiping it off helped quite a bit. It would be great if there were more videos of soldier courses. I finally realized after losing my alignment last year, that I MUST level the soldier ledge with cement for a flat bed that is even and must fill the back wall holes behind the ledge with cement so they don't end up filled with mortar that starts slumping and misaligning the newly laid bricks.
Great video with clear, detailed instructions. I am planning to make a low profile front wall that will then house iron railings. If you have made a video with those considerations, I will be front row with the popcorn. 🍿
Nice videos. Just a small note about rolling the muck. The reason why the muck needs to be rolled is getting the water that sat on the bottom of the muck reincorporated back to the top of the cement so the mortar mixture gets moisten evenly before applying as some cement products require less curing time and dry as they sit so it's a good habit to pick up if you are starting out.
Second day on my bricklaying apprenticeship , first day was (induction) and I’ve gone into it having a bit of knowledge from your videos. Great work mate ! Defiantly harder then it looks on RUclips 😂
Thanks for video. Your approach is really welcoming. Suggestion: On the grinning and hitching part it would of been good to have an overhead view / birds eye view of the joint being out. Keep up the great work ❤
Hey now Rodan, I bilt a paper incinerator with the knowledge I got from your videos. My bricks we old used fire bricks with cement on them that couldn't be removed prebiuld. Yeah I know, but the mofo is a plum. Thanks Rodan son of Zilla(;
Great video, really enjoy your channel and it's tutorials. One thing I've never found on RUclips is building steps to a house where they finish above the DPC and the precautions you should take to avoid bridging the DPC? How should you go about this? Keep up the good work.
Very nice video - thanks! I noticed at 25:42 there was a "hole" in the joint after laying the brick. Is it best practice to leave it alone, force more mortar (from the top?) into the joint, or remove the brick and try again?
Have you done a video for a set of steps? (only 2 or 3 step, for a back patio door) would be very interested to see how you would go about it, also what would you do if the ground was on a small slope across the steps, would you just put more muck on the one side first to try and level off? I have been challenged by my husband to build them myself 😟 fab videos have learned alot already! Thank u for sharing ur knowledge
We say the gobbo is bleeding out when it does that . I reckon a touch of feb will ease that a bit and if the bricks are damp we stack them honeycomb style ..........on edge in 2s so the air can get round them 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
I'll try the feb trick, cheers buddy👍🏻 The trouble is, the bricks arent damp....just cold. I can only assume that doesn't help, maybe they arent sucking in enough water as I lay them🤷🏻♂️
Hi thank you for all you video they are really informative. I am using them to build a bbq are. Question I have though is how u set up line if one en is up against a wall. Also can you do a video on building pillars please
You mention about perp sizes. I too prefer the look of a tighter perp. But what are you supposed to do if the bricks are coming up short? I have just bought 1000 bricks but they’re all about 5mm shorter than standard. Should I keep a 10mm or keep to standard brick length?
Interesting comment about the wet bricks. I also find now that the nights are getting colder I have frost in the sand. I start out having the perfect mix but as the frost melts everything gets sloppy and I have to add more calcium. My mortar sags and everything gets sloppy.
Hey man! I’m a new subscriber. Currently studying level 2 multitrades in college. I found bricklaying to be the most awkward trade but Your channel has helped me a lot. I hope the house is going well. Now looking for someone to take me on as an apprentice. Keep up the good work.
Kieren Standen it’s all about finding a site though mate. I’ve already done level 2 electrical as well. I’m 18 and from Kent. Not many places about. Looked on all job sites and applied. Never got a reply.
Kieren Standen I’m from Gillingham mate. I don’t have much experience on site but most sites aren’t willing to give experience. So I’m stuck. Especially when I am on a full time course in college.
Hi I Like Your Videos, Those Red Bricks I Like Can You Tell Me What Brand They Are, I'm Going To Build A New Wall Outside My House And I Fancy Using Those Red Bricks, Thanks.
Perhaps you could explain in detail why your perpes can have gaps between the mortar and the brick. When your laying the bricks sometimes small gaps show up between the brick and the mortar. Dose that fill in when you lay the next course? Or what?
Large perps usually for mkig bond work fit dimensions dry bonding usually counters this.Left side all day on brick work.I do like a 12mm perp on block tho lol.
HI RODIAN COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHEN BUILDING CORNERS READY TO RUN IN, SAY FOR A GARDEN WALL , DO YOU MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE ENDS IE: DIVIDE THE DISTANCE MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF BRICKE PLUS THE PURPS ? AS WATCHING YOURS AND OTHER VIDEOS THE LAST BRICK IN THE RUN ALWAYS FITS, IF ALL THAT MAKES SENSE ?
Respect for you to take on the challenge of learning the trade. If you stick around I will be uploading plenty of tutorials so hopefully I will be able to give you advice through them 🧱👍🏻😁
So how do you use the line block when the mortar is still wet? During a real job you can't wait for the corners to dry to continue can you? You'd be building it all at once, so wouldn't the line blocks move the fresh set bricks?
Hey Rodian, great video, the mortar is light coloured did you use lime in the mix. Would be great if you could make a video on how to mix different colours of the mortar?
It's a sand and lime mix, just for these tutorials. Didnt want to use cement as I take these down after each video. I'll probably do a video on mixing dye into mortar, sound like a good idea👍🏻😁🧱
How do you calculate and maintain the dimensions and length of a Brick Wall? How are the dimensions and length of a Brick Wall arrived at so that it will work out to a perfect number of whole bricks without having to saw or to shorten a brick or having to plug a two inch hole at the end of the brick wall? As you are making the first run of the Brick Wall; placing brick, mortar, brick, mortar, brick, mortar; how do you keep the length of the brick run in compliance with the theoretical length and dimensions of the brick wall? A slight increase or decrease in the width of the mortar joints will increase or decrease the overall length of the brick wall causing you to saw or to shorten a whole brick or having to plug a two inch hole at the end of the brick wall.
Do you always do the first few bricks in the corners first so you have a reference for your line? Or do you do the complete bottom row first? Great vids! Thanks
Great video thank you, a quick question ...I like the 15mm spacing more than the 10mm spacing which brings me to the question...will the 15mm spacing be "weaker" than the 10mm spacing if you built a wall?
Re the 10 vs 15mm perp question, the bricks are sized for a 10mm joint. If you use something else then you're going to continually get in problems lining up.
Hi, tell me, I want to order Marshalltown 19 10Fg 10In trowel. Brick Trowel Philadelphia Pattern, is it possible through you? And how is this trowel? I haven't worked like this before

I’ve been told in my college that I should place the half bricks cut side into the wall instead of facing the cavity. Is it okay to do it both ways or is one way better than the other
It is for practical purposes. Sometimes you will be making 3/4 or other kind of split on your bricks and then you need to try for a good cut. No reason to do that if you need exactly half of brick.
Rodian Builds another question! What is the difference between building the walls you show in your videos, and building a chimney if any? Are the bricks more heat resistant? Is the mortar different?
In the USA a home owner can fix a lot of things on there own house without a contractors license. Structural elements are one thing that needs permits though. Maybe you could talk a little bit about that. Maybe you could put in a warning in one of your videos, to protect guys who might build something dangerous 👍😉

It won't. But usually design will require 10mm to get you to right wall length and all windows + doors in the right place.
What is your experience with CO.ME brick trowels from Italy?? Any good.
I like the 10mm joints

What do you do if it won't fill in with a full brick?
the 10mm vs 15m depends on the type of brick. I agree the left looks better
Daft question but how did you get first course level, rack to rack?
The slab I work in is level and I measure each course to make sure it's to gague and as long as it it it will be level
the right side is more old world and "fire-place". But the left is neater.
Why those bricks have such a deep concave side?
Is there a maximum length for using a string line ?

No maximum length. Just be careful the middle doesn't sag too much or you'll need to use a tingle

10mm looks far cleaner and professional.
10 mil for sure

always keep brickwork tight if you can mate , facework joints should not exceed less than 7mm and not bigger than 13mm

do you thick in you move the brick from side to side it would move into place if yes stop tapping with your trowel
it not called any of them is called bird nesting as they can sit on the brick

other than the looks, it would be more interesting to know the structural integrity difference between them.
Left side please
3/8 of an inch!
I assume that's 10mm? Dont have a tape to hand to have a look 🤣🤣🧱👍🏻
Why don't you use elastic line? Then you can pull it as taut as you need.
