This video is intended to offer a brief explanation of the types of survey markers commonly used in the Southeastern United States, survey methods may change depending on your geographic region and local customs. Our method to help #identify markers isn’t exact, but over the years it has been helpful and we want to share this insight with #landowners, buyers and sellers that may be interested in locating #property lines.

I have a question. Do surveyors ever "offset" a rebar marker in the event there is a significant tree in the spot where the pin should be?

Surveyor from Utah here. Yes, sometimes. That's why it it important to contact the County Surveyor for published previous surveys. Just because you find a metal lot corner rebar or pipe, does NOT mean that is the actual calculated lot corner.

How do you measure distances between property posts/markers in heavily wooded areas?

In most cases, it's relative to your situation or distance. If you don't have professional equipment for approximate findings, you can use whatever works best for your situation, it isn't uncommon to use a range finder, measuring wheel, or measuring tape. Many free GIS sites offer online measuring tools for linear feet and acreages that are also helpful.
