There are a bunch of errors in this playthrough that I want to call out here! 1. When rolling for “first strike” you roll a D10, not the percentile dice. 2. When the priest attacks with a 2-handed weapon, you can roll damage dice twice and choose which result to take! 3. Total coins earned: 2 multiply that by the wolves (3) and you get 6. So 6 coins per layer 4. 10 lore per wolf, so a total of 30 lore per player is correct! 5. Act doesn't include interact, search etc. and it can be done in the middle of movement! 6. The wolf should have gone around the wall but it's stride would have got it into combat any way so that's nothing. 7. When Samson passed the Archaeologist 6, he should have recovered 2 VITA!!
These videos have been super helpful, thanks! Have a copy but haven't played just yet, the rules seem pretty comprehensive but it was missing a straightforward game flow section that these videos have really helped cement for me.
Hey Colin, you made the same goof as we did in our first playthrough: with a two handed weapon like the pick, you can actually roll damage twice and pick the best result! The rule book makes this rule by far not obvious enough, so it can be easily missed. Thanks again for your videos, enjoying them a lot!
Hank you are the MAN!! I am planning on putting up subtitles for all of my mistakes (which there are plenty!) tonight! I will add this one and thanks for the help!!
One Stop Co-op Shop Colin, I really don't count them as YOUR mistakes. The game is fun but extremely fiddly, and the rules are very ambiguous to say the least. We finished the core campaign and still make lots of mistakes or come up with questions not answered by the rulebook. You did a perfect playthrough of Spirit Island, one of the most complex games this year - so, be assured, no one blames you for missing one of the many hidden rules in Folklore.
Ha thanks Hank! Yeah that is why I think they said in the rulebook that if you are not sure about a rule, make your best guess and move on. Otherwise you could get hung up on the rules and that just takes you out of the experience. Regardless, thank you for the kind words!
Lots of 'fiddly' comments here, and other places. (like BGG.) I get why people are saying this, but to me it's not fiddly, feels very much like table top rpgs, so for folks who like D&D (or, % like Call of Cthulhu) it's pretty natural and fun. These videos are wonderful, thank you!!!
This, in fact, is a very straightforward and easy to follow ruleset for a modern ameritrasher. I found the game very intuitive and all the gameplay steps are very clear and easy to track. Of course because of that, the game lacks the tactical depth other games have, but it´s ok. When i want a good headache, i play Sword & Sorcery for a couple of hours, now that´s fiddly.
23:59 You don't have to pay the PP but it cost 2 AP ( Ability Points) to learn it. But since you started with it you don't have to learn it, it's assumed that you've learned it already. Thank you! At least that's my understanding of it. I just got the game yestersday,.
We made some mistaes as you did, like the two handed weapon and the re-rolling hability, but, as you did, we won after all, so, was not a big deal. This game is one of the greatest expierience lately...Is so narrative, and, even using some old mechanics of other games, is something new.
I'm new to your channel and enjoying the playthough. Don't worry too much about constantly forgetting the +1 damage, when I started playing D&D 5e I forgot about using my rangers hunters mark so often that I literally put up a sticky note behind the DM's head saying 'don't forget the hunters mark'. Your dislike of the D4's on camera: A friend of mine doesn't like D4's he thinks they aren't random and too easy to roll the result you want even unconsciously so he uses d8's divides by two round up. I use double six dice, they are 12 sided dice that come in two varieties, One is 1-6 twice on the die and the other is 1-4 three times on the die.
When you get your rewards, the coins is per creature, the loot is what's listed on the card. Right above where you read about the looting, you can see the explanation. I think you did the looting correctly. 1 roll\character\type of enemy.
One Stop Co-op Shop Hey guys, please check p. 31 of the rule book in addition to the Loot paragraph. It says in a yellow box "For example, if the group successfully encounters 3 Decaying Dead (reward for each is 10 Lore), each character would receive 30 Lore.". This should be made more clear in the Loot section of the rules, but unfortunately it isn't. Have fun playing and gaining more lore!
Those wolf standees, need some coloured sole, so u can distinguish between them. Otherwise i think, its much harder to track who was hit and who doesn`t.
How do you know what the search locations are? e.g. when you searched the well [22:37] Loving this playthrough, you are so good at making a game to play such an enjoyable story to listen to. Thank you for your work for the boardgame hobby.
Thank you so much for watching!! Now it has been over a year since I played this one. . . but I think there are magnifying tokens you can use to show where you can search? If that doesn't sound right I would suggest asking on BGG as they would be better at answering these types of questions! :) Thanks again for commenting and watching!
Totally get it, for me there is too much dice rolling too. Their are some good choices, but with minimal dice mitigation, and D00 and D10 dice, it makes for very swingy fights.
To track wounds or power points, i use tokens from Descent of damage and fatigue and remove it as far i get damaged or use the powers. More easier to track
You could probably do less cutting back and forth. I don’t think we necessarily need to see you adjust the health and power point dice every time they change. Maybe for an episode or two while people are still getting used to the rules/flow of the game. If you’re going to stick with a one camera setup you could save yourself a lot of time and editing with fewer transitions.
I've been looking for solo games. Are any of the ones you listed easy to learn to play. I like games like talisman and hero quest. Simple dungeon crawlers.
This one would not constitute as a simple dungeon crawler. You should look at some of the CMON titles like Zombicide Black Plague or the D&D Adventure Board Games!
Another good video all them extra damage forgotten and lost. I kind of feel there’s maybe a little two much going on for one player to control three or more characters. Love the vids though keep it going!
Yeah I suppose so seems a bit clunky though so I’ll the combat anyways but I do like the game don’t think I’ll be adding it to my tiny collection of two games. Not like it matters because of the rolls but hasn’t one of your dude got something that helps with loot rolls?
The 0-100 stats makes for a huge range of outcomes, as opposed to games with 6 or 10 or 20. It also means that +/-1 has a lot less effect. How do you feel about rolling for all of the conditions? It seems like it adds even more rolling (both time and randomness) a lot. The bullet points imply that interact is done freely, separate from the one action. At least that's how I read it.
Yeah not a huge fan of the percentile dice in this one. Rolling for conditions is fine with me, but you are right it takes more time. Yeah I agree about the interact comment but what I have seen on the kickstarter, I felt like it was its own action. Once again, not entirely sure and I think they are clearing up these ambiguities in the 2nd edition. Thanks for watching David!
Using percentile dice doesn’t make for a “huge number of outcomes”, there is the same number of outcomes as if you were using a d20, pass or fail. Percentile dice actually decrease the variance because they allow for more granular adjustments. If the game used a d20 system the designers would have to decide if they wanted you to have a 70% chance or a 75% chance to pass a check. With percentile dice they can choose to make it any number they wish.
Well don't forget I do have the stone which allows me to regain 4 power points and the prayer which makes it free to use powers. So that is why I freely used them this encounter! but good point to make, I need to be ready for the boss fight at the end! Thanks for watching Kevin!
Why must you only make half hour videos released every few days! Ahhhh! Seriously thanks for the playthrough.Very fun to watch, even when you fail on adding the bonuses, but I'm sure the dark lords enjoy it(HarHar)*snicker*.Looking forward to more from this series. Now for my serious question. You've had a chance to combat with 3 players.Do you think 4 would be doable AND fun solo?Or is 3 the max you would play solowise? Thanks!
HAHAHA well if only this was my full time job! :) Thank you for watching! I will be doing my next vid this week, just have to find the time! As for 3 vs. 4. I think for is doable. . . but I missed a bunch of things with 3! (granted it is always more difficult when you are recording). I would say the optimal is 3, but you could do 4 if you make sure to take your time, or are ok missing a thing or two!! Hope that helps!
I hope to see the new video soon. Keep checking the feed for it shortly after I finished this one (day it was released) and it seems like an eternity. Take that as a compliment. I'm invested.
You start mentioning her attacks she will use at 10:20. 11:09 you forget that to add +1 to the damage only inflicting 1 damage to the wolf :/ (you even went over previously the extra damage she will deal XD. No biggie). Right after that you roll for the lantern's attack - I am guessing this part (11:08) since you never mentioned it here but you did say you were going to use that lantern earlier for a second attack. 11:30 you begin activating the wolves skipping the roll entirely for the wolf that got hit by the Psychic Implosion. Not sure if you do this roll when you use the power or right before they activate, though. I don't have the game so this something you'd need to look up :P Enjoyed the video. I will stop watching here as I am looking forward to playing this once it comes around into my possession. I am hoping I wont have to wait several more years to get it. Backed it ages ago on kickstarter (second printing).
Just got the game and I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of stuff. I got everything from kickstarter I could, but don't wish to add anything that would tip the balance of the main game in an unfavorable manner. Just wondering how easy it is to get the best equipment for your characters during play? Have you had a chance to try out the game with the Crafting & Recipes card pack? This tiny add-on pretty much bloats the item deck with more cards meaning odds of getting what you may be after would be lower. Not sure how well it balances power with more RNG.
I've played the first story and watched your playthru to the end of this episode and played thru the first story myself.. .My thoughts on the game...Artwork and mini's are fantastic! Depth and storyline immersive. Tiny (even 1%) changes to the "to hit" roles make it unnecessarily fidgity. Combining world map and adventure map concept works well. Too early to comment on advancement process much, but it does appear to be a sludge. I do think i will need to spend just about all the coins i've earned to heal my characters back up ..cursed is a bitch...Starting the next story with less than I started the first story isn't making me smile. Do NOT like the idea of discarding prayers and rituals after use. What did I do, forget them?
Thanks for the videos. I was looking at this as something to complement Gloomhaven (more story and RPG development, less combat focused) but WOW is it random. Percentile dice is so 80's but I could live with that...but then: roll to see who the monster hits, roll for might, roll for damage, roll for whatever item, roll for conditions...too much rolling, not enough decision making me thinks. Shame too, cause the stories look to be well made and the art is beautiful. But after stuff like Gloomhaven and Perditions Mouth this looks like a step back in mechanisms...like 3 decades back :) I'll skip this one, all my hopes are in Cody Miller's Arydia now.
Totally TOTALLY get it. The D00 and D10 for all resolutions do get a bit old. It offers something that Gloomhaven doesn't which is a deeper story. But Gloomhaven is far superior when it comes to tactics and hand management. I like them both for different things, but I totally get where you are coming from! Thanks for watching!!
I think your comparison to Gloomhaven is a bit unfair to Folklore (although I understand why you and many other people feel the need to compare them). Gloomhaven is a puzzely euro-style game masquerading as a dungeon crawler. Folklore is as ameritrashy a dungeon crawler as you will find. Saying Gloomhaven beats folklore in hand management is a bit disingenuous since Folklore isn’t trying to be a band management game. As for tactics, well I could critique your strategy for this battle on a number of different points so maybe the strategy you’re wanting is there and you’re just not seeing it (you have a weapon that immobilizes and you were facing a fast moving enemy for instance).
Very good point Trent! I think what I was trying to say is for me personally I prefer the type of tactical and hand management in Gloomhaven over third tactical combat. Regardless both of them fill different niches for me. And I can gurantee I am not showing great tactics in this game ha! 😁 thanks so much for watching!!
They are definitely two very different types of games in terms of mechanisms despite being very similar in theme which is why I think comparing them is a bit problematic. A lot of reviewers (not including you in this statement) are doing a poor job of outlining what makes the games different, people just hear X is better than Y without realizing X might not even be the type of game they are interested in.
I don't know how this (Folklore) has been out for so long and I have never seen it until now - lol. It looks like my kind of game, except it REALLY needs some trackers or dials for health, power, etc... And those d4's can go right in the trash - I loathe pyramidal d4's
First of all I must say I general your videos are great but I also think that you can cut down on reading "everything". It could cut down tome and make the video more fluent and interesting if you only read things relevant to the actual roll or action you took. No need for us to see all options as we'll still have to check them out when we actually play the game. Hope you get my point. Now Yo my question. Between and Tomb of Annihilation which one should I choose? I see this as being more heavy on lore and reading and more complicated in combat. Thus overall more rich but also more difficult and time consuming to learn. Tomb of Annihilation seems pretty much straightforward, and you can get pre painted figures which is a plus for me. I didn't even know that adventures actually continue so am looking forward to see how that works.
Thanks for the feedback! When you say everything, can you be more precise, what was I reading that you did not like? When I do playthrough's I try and make them as immersive as possible which does tend to reading the flavor text as for me that is an important part of the game. Just curious on your thoughts!! I agree that both ToA and Folklore have substantially different feels! I like each one for something different. ToA I love how simplistic the game is yet thematic and enjoyable. Folklore it is the story that brings me into the game!
Flavor text is fine although some people probably see it as a spoiler but fine with me. I'm thinking more of the fact that you read through all the possible outcome of for example a dice roll or an item effect, if this than that effects etc. I don't see it as necessary that you read what a 0-6 roll means if you rolled 8. We can read the other outcomes on camera while you read what you actually rolled. Follow me?
Totally TOTALLY get you! Finally recorded part 3 today and I think I followed your advice. Let me know! Should be up tonight or tomorrow, just have to edit (which of course takes longer than recording hahaha)
One Stop Co-op Shop 24:36 right after archeologist uses bandages and then misses with his whip. The next character rolled a 10 and a 0 on the percentile to hit roll which would be a 100 if I am not mistaken. Thanks to you this game is on my Xmas list! Thank you for doing these.
OK call me crazy but what I see is the D10 has the 0 so that is 10, and the percintile dice has 10, not 90. If the percentile die is 90, and the D10 is 0 that is 100 right? Am I crazy? Glad you like the game!! Thanks so much for watching!!
Upon looking at your other dice rolls, your 10 sided die has a 00 - 90, so actually a roll of 10 and 0 would be a 10. A roll of 00 and 0 would be 100. I sent you a link on fb messenger of what i think is commonly used for percentile.
I 100% agree, the biggest drawback of this game is how gosh darn fiddly and random fighting is. D100 is too much of a variation for me personally, and then roll dice for damage as well. Seems like a lot of randomness. BUT the story is quite fun, and the characters are well done (minus Indiana Jones haha!). Thanks as always Franck for watching!
Percentile dice actually makes the combat less random than using a d20 and allows for finer tuning in terms of balance. If a system uses a d20 to check for a hit your hit percentages are 5%, 10%, 15% etc. Using percentile dice allows for hit probabilities of 13%, 71%, 94% etc. If you don’t like randomness you should actually prefer percentile dice.
If you do an attack roll, how can you manage to roll a devastating attack, when you count 0+60 as "60" and 7 + 00 as "7"? Remember that you have to throw a natural 100 to get a devastating attack. I'd really love to have an explanation for how to correctly read the dice because now I'm really confused after watching your playthrough.
I've tried but didn' succeed to enjoy the game, too fiddly for my taste... I love the folklore inside, the gameplay and game design push me out of the game.
You would think it is not that difficult, but with trying to do everything else, it is easy to forget. Sorry about that but at least it was hurting me instead of helping me!
So 6 coins per layer
4. 10 lore per wolf, so a total of 30 lore per player is correct!
5. Act doesn't include interact, search etc. and it can be done in the middle of movement!
6. The wolf should have gone around the wall but it's stride would have got it into combat any way so that's nothing.
7. When Samson passed the Archaeologist 6, he should have recovered 2 VITA!!
I appreciate that you let people know when you've missed something in the rules. Great video, keep them coming!
So, I started playing this after I didn't care for Tainted Grail, Kings of Ruin and I am having a blast! Love this game. Thank you for the video.
These videos have been super helpful, thanks! Have a copy but haven't played just yet, the rules seem pretty comprehensive but it was missing a straightforward game flow section that these videos have really helped cement for me.
I love your nerdy-geeky passion and how you get into the games. ❤
Hey Colin, you made the same goof as we did in our first playthrough: with a two handed weapon like the pick, you can actually roll damage twice and pick the best result! Excellent playthrough! I have been debating pledging for the Kickstarter, so your videos have been helpful. Getting very tempted :)
Good luck making the decision Dan!! And thanks for watching!
Yay! You helped the farmer!! I'm liking this game the more I am seeing of it!
It is a fun one! Lots of dice rolling, but very deep in theme! Thanks for watching Wendy!
Shouldn't you have rolled a d6 on each psychic attach to see if you could roll a 6 an make the wolf lose a turn?
NUGGETS!! You are right! Sheester. Well I think it only affected the play 2 or 3 times but I will make a klingon note, thanks for catching that!
Wow. This game is pretty cool. Loving the run through.
Thanks so much for watching Jimm!!
Keep the videos coming. really liking them.
Will do Mark! Just gotta get to the weekend for some time to record! Real life getting in the way ha! Blasted jobs 😁
Lots of 'fiddly' comments here, and other places. (like BGG.) I get why people are saying this, but to me it's not fiddly, feels very much like table top rpgs, so for folks who like D&D (or, % like Call of Cthulhu) it's pretty natural and fun.

Nice thanks for that and enjoy the game!
this is so much fun. can't wait for the next episode.
Thanks for watching Ahmed!
On a two handed weapon attack, per the rules, you actually get to rule the d4 twice and then take the higher result.
Thanks!
Pretty nice playthrough!! awesome game i played last weekend!
Thank you!! Have some errors in this vid I gotta put subtitles about, but I hope your playthrough went well!!
We made some mistaes as you did, like the two handed weapon and the re-rolling hability, but, as you did, we won after all, so, was not a big deal. This game is one of the greatest expierience lately...Is so narrative, and, even using some old mechanics of other games, is something new.
Agreed!! The narrative and characters really bring me into the theme of the game! Thanks for watching!

I just don't care for picking up 4 sided dice..:) I will use Steve's 8 sided die idea. Thank you Steve . !
When you get your rewards, the coins is per creature, the loot is what's listed on the card. Right above where you read about the looting, you can see the explanation. I think you did the looting correctly. 1 roll\character\type of enemy.
You mean I am supposed to read the rules haha!! Must have missed that, so loot and lore is per character, but search is per type. Thanks Kevin!
Correct and coin uses creature count so here it's 3xcoins listed on the card for each character. Rich wolves :)
One Stop Co-op Shop Hey guys, please check p. 31 of the rule book in addition to the Loot paragraph. Thanks! I missed that. Seems they should have put all the reward examples in one place. Would be easier to not miss.
Kevin Erskine absolutely, it's so easy to miss!
Those wolf standees, need some coloured sole, so u can distinguish between them. Otherwise i think, its much harder to track who was hit and who doesn`t.
You make a good point, it is a bit difficult to differentiate them. But with 3 it isn't terrible. IF you painted them it would help!
Will you be continuing the play through, really enjoying it?
Thanks!! Real life is getting in the way as I am at the cpa conference here in MN. But I can tell you this playthrough will go on! 😁
How do you know what the search locations are? e.g. when you searched the well [22:37]

Hi
Did Samson Take the explorer role?
I Think he then heal 2 additional Points of Vita as he roll for keeping the bandage.
You are so right!!! Thanks for that
Really wonderful

Yeah the downside of this, but hey at least you all can see the feel of the game to make a determination if you want to back!

"We are farmers. Dum-de-da da da da da"
Oh man, now I have that stuck in my head hahaha!
Man, you really chew through Power Points. I'm so much more conservative. I'm always waiting for the big boss.
Well don't forget I do have the stone which allows me to regain 4 power points and the prayer which makes it free to use powers. So that is why I freely used them this encounter! but good point to make, I need to be ready for the boss fight at the end! Thanks for watching Kevin!

You forgot the wolf needed to roll to see if it actually go a turn because of the Psychic Implosion.
got it will note it. You remember when it happened?
I don't have the game so this something you'd need to look up :P
Enjoyed the video. I will stop watching here as I am looking forward to playing this once it comes around into my possession. I am hoping I wont have to wait several more years to get it. Backed it ages ago on kickstarter (second printing).
Got it thanks!! Hope you get your copy soon!!
Not sure how well it balances power with more RNG.
this one was not for me. I sold it right after this playthrough. Fun game but the d100 killed me!
So you can attack more than once during a character's turn if you use power points?
I wish I remembered I sold this one a long time ago! I would suggest asking on BGG
@@OneStopCoopShop Thanks for the play video. I just did this encounter & was just checking because I knew I missed a few things.
Thanks for watching and hope you had fun!!
Ok now you have my Attention.I want this game.Normally i wait for a german translation but i think this will not happen.
HAHAHA!! Thanks for watching!!
Did I mention I really like the artwork in this game? It's top-notch!
Agreed some of the best!
One Stop Co-op Shop Looking forward to the rest of the gameplay. I've pledged $1 but still very much undecided on this game.
Totally 100% get it. Hopefully the next vid will help you see more of the story etc.!
A roll of 2 10' s is a 100 not 20. You cheated yourself out of a big hit. Loving the playthrough!!
Hmmm I think if I rolled a 90 and a 0, that is a 100 roll. A 10 and a 0 is 20. Do you not agree?
A 90 and a 0 is 100.
If 00 and 0 were 100 it would be impossible to roll 1-9.
As you've shown, the game is pretty fiddly. Not a fan of the combat system.
Thanks for saving me money !
But I'm still gonna watch for the story.
The combat system is roll dice to hit and roll dice for damage, it’s about as basic as it gets. It’s a lot less “fiddly” if you do both rolls at once.
Ohh I like that I will do both rolls at once except for the enemies as theirs can change
Regardless the percentile dice make your +1 our even +5 modifiers feel like they are useless.... Verses having that ones a d10 too etc.
I have no idea at this point sold this game long ago sorry!
Rolling a 100 would be 00 + 0
Rolling any other number with 00 such as a 7 would just count as a 7, or whatever number you rolled.
Cool story in this game but wow the combat system really is a big turndown... 👎 Thanks for the videos, another one to save some money on 👍
FWIW it’s pronounced “vee-ta” like in PlayStation Vita.
Hmmmm not sure what you are talking about here sorry! Fwiw?
FWIW=For what it’s worth.
HAHAHA!! Sorry got it! So I said vita and it should be veetah? I'd that right? Don't know PlayStation! Gah so terrible...
Yea you were pronouncing it like vitamin but it’s an e sound.
Thanks I will pronounce it right in the next one!
When you're rolling a d100 the 0 on the "ones" die counts as a 0. So rolling 10 and 0 would be 10, not 20.
I've tried but didn' succeed to enjoy the game, too fiddly for my taste... I love the folklore inside, the gameplay and game design push me out of the game.
Totally get it, you do have to get comfortable with the fiddliness I think before you can truly enjoy the game. Thanks though for watching!
Come on dude... every time you forget to add +1! Come on it's not so difficult. But other than that... It was very fun.
You would think it is not that difficult, but with trying to do everything else, it is easy to forget. Sorry about that but at least it was hurting me instead of helping me!
