      As am I. It makes logical sense to me that RGBACL would have advantages in quality/accuracy and also output, but what will the tests show? Specifically how close will the output of the prolycht Orion 300 Fs vs the Aputure 600c, how much more consistent across the light spectrum is RGBACL over the WW variant in total light output??? I’m very curious where to put them in my mind (background working with Mole-Richardson)

    Pre-softened panels a great choice when space is limited. Softboxes consume a lot of real estate.

    • @00WhiteBlade
      @00WhiteBlade 2 года назад +3

      Especially when lighting a white seamless backdrop. A hard light like the 600c will reveal every wrinkle. Plus the naked light (or with a reflector dish) will create hotspots and rings. Throwing on a softbox will cut down the light and be more expensive and less space-efficient vertically. Plus the ballast is unnecessarily large for such a long-term setup.
      A panel light is the way to go.

    I mean if I'm just shooting talking heads the soft panels makes sense but I'd rather deal with a large softbox to soften the light and have full control.

    This was a great first look at the 600C! How would you compare the Gemini 1x1 Hard vs the 600C? In the market currently to buy the 1x1 hard but just saw this 600C come out! Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks Luke!

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад

      It really depends how you want to use the unit you end up purchasing. The nice thing about the 1x1 Hard is that you can run it off a 14V battery, it doesn’t have an extra control box. However, do you want to have the capabilities of a unit that can be shaped by a fresnel or projection mount? I more difficult when you try to make one unit do everything, most units can do one or two things well… so go for the aspect you’ll use the most right now while knowing you be covering another type of unit soon enough😉

    Hey Luke, have you noticed that the color in Aputure lights shift in less time than other lights? I have the same Aputure light, that one is less than a year older than the other, and they clearly look like different color temperatures.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад +1

      Do you mean the emitters have changed their color over time and/or that you have two identical units, purchased at different times, that have slightly different white points? I have lights from well known brands, more expensive than Aputure, that are not exactly the same as well. Unless it’s way off, I don’t worry about it too much. Keeping track of HMI color rendition over the course of a bulb’s life can be a similar pain. It’s good to keep an eye on it, but I find my eye’s are often more sensitive to the difference than video cameras. However, it can be the case that you have a real issue, so take color readings of your units and check them on camera and determine if you can correct with gel or whether you need to make a stink about it to the manufacturer!

  • @CaseyPreston
    @CaseyPreston 2 года назад

    I am still waiting/hoping for a COB full color light that has a 100 degree or more natural spread without an attachment, and an ellipsoidal attachment with all the power and control of a Joleko 800. I seriously dislike the quality and control of the light created by the standard bowens reflectors. The fresnel attachments help a bit, but they still don't have the control of an old fashioned focusing fresnel fixture. And nothing compares to efficiency and control of a joleko. I wonder of COB's will ever be able to compete as a hard source with an old fashioned lamp based fixture.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад

      They will probably never compete completely, one for one. What changes is what we are willing to accept and the speed and capability of performance we demand.

    Luke, could you compare to the new iFootage COB LEDs? Apparently they score well on meter readings but I’m not sure that’s the end of the story. Remember from Curtis Judd’s video that the Orion scored lower but to his eye it looked better and more faithful in colour reproduction. Curious how the iFootage ones actually stack up or if RGB is the way to go even if we want 56K. Thank you!

      @@meetthegaffer The Ifootage lights were just announced and won't be available to buy til September. Gerald Undone did a review/promo for them. ruclips.net/video/qCyKdIgRVTk/видео.html They are the highest scoring SSI(84) and TM-30 (Rf 97) led lights at 5600k I've ever seen. They seem to be aimed at the prosumer market - with only the 320 watt having a decent yoke. But if the light quality is so fantastic , I can look past the limitations -(and hope for Pro versions later).

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад

      Yes, with so many companies out there with access to good LED’s this will continue to happen. There are, of course, other less obvious aspects that aid your decision to purchase from a given company: such as support and longevity, which are often hard to discern.

    • @nshea3286
      @nshea3286 2 года назад

      @@meetthegaffer I think people make a little too much of Curtis Judd's review of the Prolycht FS 300. The FS 300 has the same spike in Blues as regular RGBWW lights. The peak of the Prolycht blue spike is slightly higher 456nm than the Aputure 300x which peaks at 450nm. This would account for the slight difference in blue color. But the factor that is ignored is the color transfer curve of his camera(Blackmagic pocket 6k). Every camera model has a unique color transfer function. Each camera sees light differently. In this case the Prolycht FS300+Pocket 6k matched what Judd's eyes were seeing. But use a different camera and the results may be reversed. My point is that Camera's color is based on tungsten and daylight - a smooth continuous spectrum. A camera cannot know about the odd spectrum a LED is producing. That's why it is preferable to create a led light spectrum as close to tungsten or daylight as possible.(Kino-Flo have tried to solve this problem by modifying the spectrum of their LED lights to match individual Cameras)

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад

      It’s true, we are nowhere close to rendering “full spectrum” color with the units that are out there and even the higher- end units have serious issues in terms of lining up with tungsten or daylight. I like to emphasize what works in the field to make a DP’s life more pleasant and at the same time work well for the crew as facilitators. The specs are important to a point, but so is the day to day usability and hardiness of a fixture. There is also an aspect of peer pressure: to use units that others have so you can sub-rent to and from others. What are DP’s comfortable with? How this changes slowly over time affects purchases too. So many things come into play that we always have to look beyond one person’s review before we get too excited or disappointed by a given unit😃

    When are nova 600c panels the right tool? If you wanted the best image for a music video or interview what light would give you the best soft image pointed at the subject with diffuser the aputure cob 600c or the nova 600c ?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Год назад

      I think they are pretty similar one you add a softener, but the Light Storm 600c probably won’t fill the softener as evenly as the Nova 600c. I have use both through Octa banks or into diffusion frames to good effect for interviews. Having both gives you a panel and point source option with full color at your finger tips: a pretty sweet 1-2 punch!

      @@meetthegaffer Thank you very much for the info! Would you say the Nova 600 will give you more confidence over a Skypanel s60 because of the extra output?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад

      I use the Nova 600c more often than my s60c Skypanels because of the output boost, the integrated Lumen Radio, and the way my truck is currently configured. However, I have not purchased a direct to fixture snapgrid, a snapbag and snapgrid for the snapbag, so when I need a fixture in that configuration or in a row of cyc lighting, I often go back to the Skypanels. It all depends where you are in your gear ownership cycle, if that makes any sense?!

    • @cockerjc
      @cockerjc 2 года назад

      @@meetthegaffer - Yes, makes total sense. I remember when trucks were slowly phasing out kino tubes. That was awkward for a while. I never liked kinos, but I wasn't around before them either, so idk what THAT was like.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  2 года назад +1

      Kinos were a godsend! In a world of tungsten and HMI’s they provided a way to rig soft light close to talent or in tight spaces with fixtures that were, for the most part, cool to the touch. I’ve continued to enjoy using LED freestyle Kinos. If you can work with a tethered solution, it’s hard to beat the lightweight tubes, and the great form factor of the panel when taken out of their housings. I’m a fan😀
