    That pink flower looks pretty.
    From painting with acrylics,
    I understand why you would want to go in with the lighter colors first.

    I always underestimate how much you have to water down watercolor and I start way too bold and just like you said I get more blobs and lose all my white paper and end up trying to lift color off. I’m going to practice keeping in mind your suggestions. Thank you!!!

    Mmm. As far as the gradient wash goes, I actually like the muddy one of the pink and yellow - ok, its nowhere near as clean but it has interesting tertiary colours in there. My problem is panic, mainly - I tend to plough ahead when I make mistakes then try to fix them when Ive chilled out a bit. I often can't and then it tends to spiral. The planning thing is something I absolutely do - its why it can take weeks for me to get a painting done, lol. Interesting video, thankyou. :o)

    • @simpleshoes
      @simpleshoes 2 года назад

      I like it the best too. To me that’s letting the colours mingle and do their own thing. That’s not getting mud.

    • @Feenix102
      @Feenix102 2 года назад

      @@simpleshoes yeah. I guess its the difference between creating an effect on purpose and a mistake - if you wanted a clean gradient and ended up with the mixture then I can see how that might be annoying.

    Thank you so much for this video. I just became interested in watercolor last January when I came across a box set of water color tubes, half pans and pencils on sale at my local Michaels. I’ve been watching many videos and trying my hand at painting ever since then. As I was trying to paint Christmas cards it became very apparent that the paper made all the difference. I painted your angel with the trumpet and was upset hat the blues in my background didn’t blend together like yours. I figured it was just me. Next I tried a starry sky and it looked terrible. The paint bled into areas where it shouldn’t have and the colors didn’t blend together. I de😊cided to break out the pad of Arches paper I had bought a while back and cut it to card size. What a difference! I plan on trying your angel again on Arches paper. I’m going to try and paint some cards and gift tags now so I am ready for next year. I am so appreciative of the videos you and other professionals put out on RUclips. You’re making dreams attainable!

    Thanks for your tips! I'm a fairly new learner. I've been trying to paint the tutorial you have on the loose orchids and could not get anywhere (pages and pages of practice) until I saw the tips. The answer was the paper. It was not 100% cotton. I, fortunately, had a block of Stonehenge paper and it worked! I'll keep on practicing, though. LOL

    These are some of the most useful tips I’ve received. I am fairly new to watercolor. I haven’t had a chance to take any classes, so everything I’ve learned has come from You-Tube. I really liked the tip regarding layering your colors. I usually “wing it” and my flowers end up looking like your first example. I never have understood that you build your colors. Thank you Ellen. This was all very helpful. Cannot wait to practice all these tips.
