Most people don't know that Phyllis was also an accomplished concert pianist. She played with major orchestras, and when she walked on stage, people would laugh. They thought it was going to be a comedy act. But then she'd play Beethoven or Mozart, and people's jaws would drop.

PHYLLIS DILLER WAS SO KIND TO MY MOM AND I WHEN I WAS YOUNG WHEN MY AUNT WAS MIKE DOUGLAS'S PRODUCER AND WE WOULD HANG OUT WITH HER IN THE GREEN ROOM, AND THEN WHEN SHE APPEARED AT THE LATIN CASINO IN CHERRY HILL SHE CAME TO OUR HOUSE AND HAD EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD LAUGHING.A GREAT LADY.

I think it's interesting many of us knew Phillis Diller in Webster Groves Mo. and that's not mentioned that she ever lived in Missouri. We saw her at Bettendorph's Grocery store frequently, and knew it was her by her laugh. I also knew of Ppl who babysat her children.

As usual Ms. Rivers delivers- and what I noticed about her candor and honesty, is that she never once said I loved her- (so passee and most times fake) ) but" I really liked her" that is real affection and admiration for someone

I think she knew. The over the top was always the comedy. But she knew how to put herself together. When she sold clothing on Qvc, her advice to anyone was, if you find pants, blouse, etc, that fit, buy multiples and get them tailored to you and in different fittings for different occasions. As a man who is a bit odd shaped, I plan to start taking this advice, because jeans and shirts, etc, fit me oddly. Tailoring seems to be the key, since in our current day, we mostly purchase ready to wear.

Joan Rivers after all these years is still at the top of her game. I remember seeing her a few times in Vegas in the eighties and in Hollywood for her workshops. I wanted to write for her and her manager at the time encouraged me to send my material to him. But i lacked the ambition and drive. We easily diss those we think have little to no talent. But to stay in the public eye is harder than it looks. And Joan does it well

Loved Joan's words about Phyllis. My favorite joke of Phyllis's was "I'm so ugly. I just spent 5 hours at the beauty parlor. And that was just for an estimate!". In reality, after a little cosmetic surgery she was quite attractive, but she hid her body in big, formless suits and wore shock wigs to be able to keep up the schtick.

That’s true that Moms Mabley came before Phyllis Diller, but moms Mabley started out in vaudeville which welcomed women performers and also women comedians much more than the later stage shows that Phyllis Diller would break in as did Joan Rivers. There was no vaudeville by the time Diller started in the 50s. Vaudeville was gone by the 40s.

I was not a fan in the beginning. Joan was too crass for me. She just seemed like a woman, trying to be a man. I will never be a fan of that. But to me, in the end she became the funniest most gracious lady, we will ever see in comedy. I miss you, Joan, as much as I do miss Diller.

I do want to add that I got to see Joan Rivers early on when she’d be on the Ed Sullivan show and we just loved seeing her on the Sullivan show. Joan Rivers was different, her comedy was about women, married women and the state of being a single woman. Joan did make fun of herself so I don’t see your point about Joan Rivers being crass, that came much much much later in her career. But when you saw Joan Rivers early on in the 60s, she was just a funny woman talking from an American woman’s perspective. And she went on Ed Sullivan when she was pregnant with her daughter Melissa!

It's so sad hey. You see all these amazing tributes to what was such a vivacious woman and all I could think was did she know Jesus, DID SHE KNOW JESUS?!! I just googled to try find out. But the reality is, if you need to google to find out if someone passionately loves and lives for Jesus, then I guess you already know the answer. It truly breaks my heart. We can be held in the highest regard here on earth, be absolute superstars who give millions to charities and inspire even more millions….but if we don't know Jesus….it's just scary to think of the very real possibility that while people here on earth are sharing heartfelt words of sorrow and "see you in Heaven" comments….well, I don't need to say anything else. Anyone who reads this, please, please, turn to Jesus xx

Kirsty Cameron If you wonder if someone 'knew Jesus' and have to Google the answer, it tells you that they see faith as something one lives rather than something one advertises. There are people who think expressing one's faith in dignity ,in empathy and in good works is far better than bragging and boasting about it.
