Walter Matthau, with whom she did not get along in Hello Dolly, was invited to her 1986 concert; he appears briefly on the finished DVD. Mike Wallace was invited to her 2007 concert in Miami and, sure enough, he’s on the complete DVD as well. She seems to rise above it all. Mike Wallace is pretty much forgotten today. It helps to understand where people are coming from in order to know whether we’re the issue or they are, or both. Psychotherapy helps us look at ourselves and at others with a clearer understanding. Also Mike, one breath later: "You were totally self-absorbed."
    When it comes to powerful men, most accusations are confessions but damn, that one wasn't even cleverly disguised. This was a hit piece masquerading as an in-depth profile. When she becomes upset at Spanish Inquisition-level questions about her childhood (doubting her own perception of her stepfather that she lived with) and he has the audacity to lecture *her* about the themes of *her* movie, as if she doesn't know them, I nearly spit at the screen. And when he asks her "What are we gonna do [i.e. talk about]? 'And then I wrote'? 'And then my next song was'?" I thought "Yeah, why not? Ask her about her WORK and talk about its own merits, not what untold scandalous story of her past it might be rooted in." Yellow journalism is one thing. This was urine-soaked yellow. Pulitzer once said: "A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will in time produce a people as base as itself." This piece epitomized that sentiment.

    Wow this is not aging well. Too many occasions during this interview that Barbara should have got up and left! Unbelievable. Look how far we’ve come, cause he’d be fired in today’s climate for a huge lack of insensitivity towards a guest, and rightfully so!

    Mike, I love you as a reporter, but I have to say Barbara has a point. You are unfriendly with her. Perhaps you can't help it cos you don't particularly like her. BTW, I also have a mean relative, and some people are just like that. Good grief, Mike, you are old enough to know better. If I were Barbara, I would never speak to you again.

    At his best, Mike Wallace was a legendary interviewer and journalist. However, he also sexually harassed women at CBS, and his condescending attitude toward women comes out in this interview, with questions like, "Were you just jealous of him [Streisand's stepfather] that he took your mother away?"

    • @jmipraimundo
      @jmipraimundo 8 месяцев назад +1

      His ability to manipulate is incredible, he manages to take her to something she isn't comfortable with, then pulls her away and finally leaves her on the floor with her mother's words. Horrible to see but also a learning experience... men can be like that! 😢

    It would have been nice if 60 minutes had acknowledged the person who lived there at the time. After all they barged in on the current tenant like he wasnt even there. Im pretty sure Barbra Streisand said hello to the person. Mike Wallace does seem abrasive toward her.

    I am almost finished reading her memoir. I just read the chapter where this interview is mentioned. I had to come back here and watch this. He was an awful human being . There is more insight into this when you read the book. I have listened to many interviews of his in my car on Sirius, he is so much different interviewing woman rather then the men, but one thing is the same , he was always combative and accusatory.

    Barbra is fine. He’s not abusing her, they obviously have a rapport. Mike Wallace created a style of interview that put people on the spot, kept them uneasy. She handled it perfectly. I remember being in awe of her voice as a kid in the seventies and lusting for her as a teenager in the eighties. Now I just respect her for surviving in a business that works hard to ruin people.

      Barbara shows her vulnerability and pain but she shows her joy as well! It helps us not to feel alone with abusive mothers or ugly parents. Like she says, some people are not capable of giving or receiving love or feel empathy toward others! Even if she still hurts as an adult when remembering, she is blessed with the ability to share and receive LOVE and feel EMPATHY toward orhers. How much lucky can she be?? People who need people are the luckiest people in the world!!❤❤❤

Break the person and make them cry on camera! When he should be trying to get to know the person and share the best of that person with the world. Love Barbara and her autobiography on audio❤ Amazing strong,honest and kind.
