This is a hard interview. Wallace is certainly not an empath. He sabotaged her with her mother’s quote. She was gracious to go through this. “The Prince of Tides” has withstood the test of time as an important film about surviving trauma.
You are right: not an empath, but rather a psychopath or sociopath. This was incredibly cruel and unnecessary. Many and much greater journalists have managed to give meaningful, yet respectful and sensitive interviews.
Despite being visibly upset, Barbra looked beautiful in this interview. Her skin is glowing, the color of her top and hair compliment her, and her eyes tell a story without words.
@dddddadadad1796 "who wouldn't be proud of this girl" pretty much sums it up. Her mum talks like Barbara is distant. Like she's a complete stranger. Not once did she use her daughters name, or say "I" am very proud of "my" "daughter". Instead she says, who wouldn't be proud of "This Girl" instead of "Barbara" her name.
When Barbra's mother is asked if she's proud of her daughter, she responds, "Who would not be? Who would not be proud of this girl?" To the next question she responds, "She hasn't got time to be close to anyone...." It was chilling. I think she ended up saying a lot more about herself than about Barbra.... 🥺
Exhactly her mother deflects away from being straight. Any normal parent would say yes of course I am so proud of my daughter. I'm very proud. She uses words that aren't personal. It just confirms what Barbara said, she never praised her. Even here her mum avoided praise by saying "Who" instead of "I" and of This "Girl" instead of referring to her as her Daughter or even using her name "Barbara" her mum talks like she's a stranger 😢 its so cold 🥶
@@TheKnight1983 You know, you are right about this. Through her words, she somehow distanced herself from her own child. I am glad that Barbra found some peace about that relationship eventually. Not completely, of course, but functionally
And yet, Streisand has always seemed to be able to put bad feelings behind her. Walter Matthau, with whom she did not get along in Hello Dolly, was invited to her 1986 concert; he appears briefly on the finished DVD. Mike Wallace was invited to her 2007 concert in Miami and, sure enough, he’s on the complete DVD as well. She seems to rise above it all. Mike Wallace is pretty much forgotten today. Streisand will be watched and remembered for generations.
I wouldn’t say this very talented woman is being ‘competitive’ _per se_ unless you consider she’s being competitive with *herself* . Barbra seems to have a very strong code of ethics that she adheres to & that in and of itself is quite admirable, actually.

I think it’s possible Barbra will live a very long time. I’ve noticed that most people who live longer than 95 years have looked younger than they are most of their lives. Barbra always seems younger.
I admit, there were times I didn't like her. After seeing this interview, I have a complete 180 turn on how I feel about her. She wasn't really given love as a young girl. Usually someone with self doubt about themselves, they are like her, perfectionist, just wants things to be good. I like her now a lot.
If we stop for a moment and ask “who hurt you as a child?” when we find someone disdainful, we’ll almost certainly find they’ve suffered child abuse in one form or another; whether it be, psychological, physical, and/or sexual. It helps to understand where people are coming from in order to know whether we’re the issue or they are, or both. Psychotherapy helps us look at ourselves and at others with a clearer understanding. She clearly was doing the work and has emerged on the other side of childhood trauma.
Barbra Streisand is one of a kind...there will never be another one. I agree with some of the other comments here and instead of trying to find something wrong with her...I think this interview should have focused on what is right about her. I still wish to hear her voice once again...that iconic voice of hers that was like no others. She is a truly talented lady...like no other!
The tone of interviewing borders on the sadistic. He is deliberately pushing buttons way beyond any sense of decency or politeness just to provoke a reaction. This would never be acceptable today. But more than 30 years later she's still thriving. Nothing can crush the human spirit.

Barbra quoted Pulitzer also. Cynical. Mercenary. There's no excuse for Wallace to have attempted to cut her down. He's probably projecting his own crap onto her. She's just trying to explain how unsupported she felt growing up.
What does it have to do with "men". You think there aren't any powerful women who are self absorbed on camera??? This is a matter of personality, not gender. The quality of the interview will differ based on those who conduct it whether women or men.
@@rpgadventurer32 To clarify, I don't belive men are innately narcissistic. I think power corrupts, and men have (or at least, they definitely did in 1991) all the power in media. They control the narrative. Yes, some possess the empathy and humility to break through and illuminate the truth of their subject without their own misogynistic biases poisoning the process. Some of those even worked for 60 Minutes (Morley Safer comes to mind. Look up his profile of Dolly Parton). But Mike Wallace was objectively not one of them.
She cracks me up. EVERYONE on the planet thinks of her as a singer. Yes, she's a great director, but why does she think people flock to see her? It's not because of her directing skills (and she does have the chops)...it's her VOICE! Face it, Kvetcheleh...in the minds, hearts and EARS of your audience, you're a SINGER!
I am not a Barbra Streisand fan, but I’m not saying that disrespectfully, I just don’t care for her music, but I was also born in the mid 80s. But yes, she’s unique looking and she’s got a beautiful voice, but OMG, that old man was horrible to her so disgusting. What a major a hole. Total chauvinist poor Barbara, and then he made her cry, and was not consoling at all.
You have feeling Barbra which is good as I meet folk these days who seem to have none. I would have felt exactly like you if I hadn't had the lovely father I had.
She's beautiful and wonderful in this interview and still going strong. Love her. Never liked Mike Wallace much and after seeing this, even less. I loved seeing her old building on Third Avenue. I lived three blocks from there, also on Third Avenue, for 25 years. The building where I lived looked pretty much the same and is still there but now converted to luxury condos. Barbra's former residence was also the home to the Muppets workshop for many years including the time when this was filmed. I worked at the Muppets in their beautiful Brownstone two blocks away but was at the workshop often. What a history that building has!
The amount of gaslighting and hostility from the interviewer is hard to watch. Absolute disgrace what Mike Wallace and other men in the industry got away with back then.
Seen the this interview previously, he was intentionally antagonizing her. Felt like punching him. She disliked him years before, she should have declined the interview. I don’t like seeing her vulnerable. 😢
Wow this is not aging well. Too many occasions during this interview that Barbara should have got up and left! Unbelievable. Look how far we’ve come, cause he’d be fired in today’s climate for a huge lack of insensitivity towards a guest, and rightfully so!
Mike, I love you as a reporter, but I have to say Barbara has a point. You are unfriendly with her. Perhaps you can't help it cos you don't particularly like her. BTW, I also have a mean relative, and some people are just like that. Good grief, Mike, you are old enough to know better. If I were Barbara, I would never speak to you again.
At his best, Mike Wallace was a legendary interviewer and journalist. However, he also sexually harassed women at CBS, and his condescending attitude toward women comes out in this interview, with questions like, "Were you just jealous of him [Streisand's stepfather] that he took your mother away?"
His ability to manipulate is incredible, he manages to take her to something she isn't comfortable with, then pulls her away and finally leaves her on the floor with her mother's words. Horrible to see but also a learning experience... men can be like that! 😢
And finally it travels in air to a. Island one picks it up and sings the way u make me feel the other also would have felt it as koonkakikukaki and loves the others tune but becomes a song so one big circle❤❤
It would have been nice if 60 minutes had acknowledged the person who lived there at the time. After all they barged in on the current tenant like he wasnt even there. Im pretty sure Barbra Streisand said hello to the person. Mike Wallace does seem abrasive toward her.
I am almost finished reading her memoir. I just read the chapter where this interview is mentioned. I had to come back here and watch this. He was an awful human being . There is more insight into this when you read the book. I have listened to many interviews of his in my car on Sirius, he is so much different interviewing woman rather then the men, but one thing is the same , he was always combative and accusatory.
Barbra is fine. He’s not abusing her, they obviously have a rapport. Mike Wallace created a style of interview that put people on the spot, kept them uneasy. She handled it perfectly. I remember being in awe of her voice as a kid in the seventies and lusting for her as a teenager in the eighties. Now I just respect her for surviving in a business that works hard to ruin people.
Barbara shows her vulnerability and pain but she shows her joy as well! It helps us not to feel alone with abusive mothers or ugly parents. Like she says, some people are not capable of giving or receiving love or feel empathy toward others! Even if she still hurts as an adult when remembering, she is blessed with the ability to share and receive LOVE and feel EMPATHY toward orhers. How much lucky can she be?? People who need people are the luckiest people in the world!!❤❤❤

I don't blame Mike Wallace for expressing surprise and doubt about her hyperbolic claim that her stepfather "never" talked to her.
@@makeadifference4all Then we'll likely never agree on what makes someone a journalist. Good day to you.
Anyone else think Jennifer Anniston looks similar to Barbara?
Barbra does since she’s said it herself and is good friends with Jennifer
Absolutely outrageous, what a ......this guy was.
I found this difficult to watch.
Im a huge Barbra fan.
She is so beautiful😊
Anyone here because of the Howard stern interview ?
What a history that building has!
what a mean interviewer
The amount of gaslighting and hostility from the interviewer is hard to watch. Absolute disgrace what Mike Wallace and other men in the industry got away with back then.
I love the feature reporting on this documentary
Seen the this interview previously, he was intentionally antagonizing her. Felt like punching him. She disliked him years before, she should have declined the interview. I don’t like seeing her vulnerable. 😢
Wow this is not aging well. Too many occasions during this interview that Barbara should have got up and left! Unbelievable. Look how far we’ve come, cause he’d be fired in today’s climate for a huge lack of insensitivity towards a guest, and rightfully so!
Wow he acted like a jealous ex boyfriend
i don't know how old this interview is, but she's so out of her time.
she even ascends this present time
💙❤️💜 Babs' honesty.
And he lied that she had loved the interview while she felt date raped.
uh, he's been dead for like 12 years now
At his best, Mike Wallace was a legendary interviewer and journalist.
Love her❤❤ Brooklyn girl
Loved the way she turned it around. What an asshole he was--so glad she called him out on it!
Anyone else here from tiktok lol
I love Barbara
Such a talent.
the interview was offensive but she triumphantly forged and shined through it all
the quote the hard stones i had in my path, I build my road...is perfect.
You didn't treat Horowitz with such disregard.
Barbra was so gracious to this mean-spirited and truly, deeply disrespectful male!!!
Well done. What a Lady.
So honest. So Classy.
I love Barbra❤
Love me some barbara💕
8:40, Barbra is GOLD! She hit back at Mike Wallace, she said I'm not taking any BS💯
❤
You can see the presenter have issues with a woman so talented and intelligent. And more successful than him.
i love her
Go figure… Ms. Streisand was correct about the lighting lol…,
And finally it travels in air to a. Island one picks it up and sings the way u make me feel the other also would have felt it as koonkakikukaki and loves the others tune but becomes a song so one big circle❤❤
A deeply cruel interview.
I don’t know why but she really reminds me of Cher
Both Taurus lol
I can´t believe the attitude of this man! It was really hard to watch this interview. Love u B
She will forever be a BROOKLYNITE! Know what I mean? One of many successful Brooklynites. 😊
Bully! Unnecessary Wallace! Should have saved it for the crooked politicians and sheisters of the world.
As someone who grew up around people as she did. I totally get her it really just creates habit for perfectionism.
Her voice at times is perfect.
It would have been nice if 60 minutes had acknowledged the person who lived there at the time. After all they barged in on the current tenant like he wasnt even there. Im pretty sure Barbra Streisand said hello to the person. Mike Wallace does seem abrasive toward her.
Wow, I heard about this interview....Mike Wallace was mean and utterly disrespectful!!!! I am sure he would not speak this way to a man!!
Typical 60 minutes. They tell Streisand her mother says she has no time to be close. They don’t tell her that her mother said she was proud of her.
BARB!!
❤❤❤
this interview is an object lesson in how sexism works... Mike Wallace has an issue with women
Probably why he was married four times right? 🤣🤣🤣
My Muse Barbra Streisand!
You can read it in her autobiography. She hated that interview. No rapport whatsoever.
He was horrible to her. Jealousy.
Mike did his job here. Barbra did hers. Both are giants of the 20th Century in their respective fields, and we were lucky to have them.
People who need people are the luckiest people in the world!!❤❤❤
1:58, The great Mike Wallace with a brutal interview with the great Barbra Streisand. But give Barbra credit, she held her own! Imagine if Mike Wallace was around today to interview Trump. He would completely DESTROY him💯
Mike Wallace proves how mean a human being can get. Awful man! Barbara still is able to be sweet but honest.Without getting angry! Wow Its like he trying to be a male Barbara Walters. Break the person and make them cry on camera! When he should be trying to get to know the person and share the best of that person with the world. Love Barbara and her autobiography on audio❤ Amazing strong, honest and kind.
Boa noite 🌃💤💤 beijos 💋💋
