- Electronic Arts was the single biggest 3rd party publisher for the Sega Mega drive and Sega Genesis. In this week’s show we are going to take a look at the full Pal EA collection. We will look at games that came with collectibles, games that were exclusive to certain Pal territories, the early EA releases, and Sega Genesis exclusives. I’ve spent the last 4 years collecting and researching this massive sub-collection for Sega’s 16-bit console, and this video is the culmination of the time and effort.

Would never have imagined that Sega Japan and ozisoft Australia were only 15.7 cm away.
I know, I measured it with my own ruler on the screen.
Congratulations on this milestone Mike!
Thanks dude. I'm still waiting to get the Italian variant, but the Italians want me to pay over £100. I've offered £11 but they won't accept that 🤷♂️
Starflight was the one sadly my copy was missing the map but I sill managed to complete it. This game was a joy.
It's amazing, I've it.
Awesome Mike! I always knew EA was a big producer but was absolutely stunned to see exactly how many games they put on the Genesis/Mega Drive. A lot of really good titles in there (and also some absolute stinkers 🙂
Yup plenty of rubbish games from EA😂
'The Faery Tale Adventure' - don't forget the 'adventure' bit, Mike! Was gifted it for Christmas around 1991 by an aunt and uncle and was incredibly disappointed (had never heard of it, so it wasn't exactly on my wish list). Grew to quite like it in the end - a pretty decent RPG for the system.
Ya I like it. I'd say a solid 7/10 RPG.
My first EA Mega Drive game was Marble Madness! Loved the weird cartridge with the yellow plastic part and EA logo
Very informative video 👍
Thanks, like I said I've waited 4 years to make it.
Your best video yet. Well done!
Thanks. It's one I've wanted to make for a while.
Your collection is legendary man!
It's growing nicely. There are still quite a few games I want to add though.
After watching this it's made me want to collect all the EA games except that 5k one lol, really enjoyed this video Mike
Cool, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love the collection.
Envy the mega drive collection.. I wish I could get half of the pal collection 😂
Nice video
It's taken over 30 years but it's grown nicely.
Nice one!! What a thorough curator you are!!!
Cool video! I do have a lot of these. My top 5: Road Rash 2, Desert Strike, Skitchin, Road Rash 3, Jungle Strike.
I love the Strike series.
Great vid Mike, looking forward to the next collection video.
That might be next week, depending on what games arrive in the post.
Such a slick video, loved it! Surprised Road Rash wasn't in the top 5 though.
Choosing 5 was hard.
How fun on the cards--I'm guessing even if they didn't come with the games that you keep them stored within the boxes with said games?
The soft cases are interesting. I still find it interesting the very, very small Aussie exclusive titles. Faery Tale Adventure--wow, fun info tidbits but also the map, very cool! Love a good video game map. Our M&M book is as thick as that; I just read it to fall asleep at night. Ha ha
That price for a couple bits of paper; stuff like that is amazing and insane! Ha, oh man, those Carmen Sandiego games with the boxes just for the books. That cracks me up. I adore how you go all out for completion, such as the watch. Will you be hunting down the sticker as well?
The FIFA country variants is neat to consider. Yes--another look at that sweet Classics box you put together. Nice.
Tom you know how far down the rabbit hole I'm going. I love learning the history of a game, it makes the colleting so much more interesting.
Love the Mega Drive covers over the Genesis ones we got here in the US. Hey, you can make more videos of this video. Like showing footage from each and comparing the variants, in parts.
Sure, I did a video on NA vs Euro cover art a few years ago. Maybe it's time to update this.
Really enjoyed watching your video Mike, great work.
Really interesting and informative, most of the info i already knew having been into megadrive for so long but, so well presented and its always nice to see some game i dont already have in my quest for a pal set(cool to see the variants etc-something i dont collect as there is too much i collect already)
Keep up the good work fella...loving following your journey-the collection is epic...looking forward to seeing further subsets towards your full world set (there are some really interesting variants across euro territories for games such a McDonalds treasureland and Eternal Champions etc)
😉👍
Mate I am well and truly down the variant's hole 😂 I need to knuckle down and focus on the core collection.
20:50 General Chaos! Yesssss!
So sad that their Kickstarter to bring back the series failed to meet its goal. Still looking forward to what they may do with the IP.
Ya, I heard about that. Wasn't supposed to be 3D?
Those early VHS rental cases that you are exhibiting there are lacking but still a step above the no-frills cardboard boxes that they put out in the USA for some of those same games.
Yup NA got screwed with the number of cardboard boxes that came out.
Very in depth overview of the Electronic Arts games and its variants. Great work! Like it. Thank you for another great video mate :D
No problem 👍
Thanks again for the great vid! The Lakers game is the reason why I stopped going for the full PAL collection back in the day. I also have the San Diegos with all the accessories. At least some of the EA's hockey games came here with a B&W Finnish instruction leaflet (I have Elitserien 96 and NHL '94). This is actually true for some games published by Sega also. And as you have probably noticed, the hard plastic EA boxes also have minor variants, depending on the date they were published (I'm aware of three). I just hate these EA boxes, the plastic is very brittle and crumbles even by itself as it ages.
Ya I don't think you can count Lakers as part of the full set. It's more of a curiosity.
Epic collection Mike. Cant believe Dark Castle didn't make your top 5 though 😆
Maybe next time🤣
Great video as always Mike, any news on return of live at arcade Wednesdays are not the same
I'm working on it.
Congrats Mike excellent video and I’ve learnt a few things and wow a watch who knew and amazing you tracked one down. Only thing I noted was in the genesis section was that all the genesis EA releases as didn’t spot the Bill Walsh college football 95. Absolutely amazing feat though Mike 👏👏👏👏
Ohh I'm going to have to go back and rewatch it now.
For " time sandiego" , i have the sticker on megadrive hard case who indicate also "watch inside"
Someone else has said the same. It sounds like another variant I was not aware of.
Awesome video
Thanks
Congrats Mike for accomplishing this awesome EA collection! What an eye opener, and this would certainly open the doors to unique variants of collection such as beating your record of having 3 FIFA98s. LOL! Thanks for the hard work to put together this video, will definitely share it with my friends.
Thanks for sharing. It's a massive sub collection for the Mega Drive and there is so much history here.
Awesome video!
I didn’t know that the watch was bundled with anything other than Sega Pro issue 6 (which had a circulation of around 60,000 at the time… so that was a *lot* of watches!!). I also didn’t know about the PGA Tour Golf II re-release.
Zool is an interesting one, because it was published by GameTek in the US (EA only published the PAL version). I can’t think of any other PAL EA releases on the Mega Drive that had a different publisher in the US.
There was some weirdness around Populous 2. Where EA licenced it out rather than publishing it themselves.
Yeah, that was a Virgin release (I remember at the time wondering why it wasn’t released by EA).
Oh, by the way, did you notice that General Chaos and Haunting Starring Polterguy have the same barcode? The Haunting barcode was misprinted, which is why many copies had a sticker (containing the correct barcode) over the printed barcode. It’s possible that this led to General Chaos being slightly over-tracked (and Haunting being slightly under-tracked), since EPOS systems (which were used to track sales and compile sales charts) made use of the barcode that was scanned.
Excellent video as always used to love James pond 2 I spent far to much time playing that game 😅
I always found it kind of average, but every time a new one came out I was super hyped for it. 😂
Great video. EA Hockey is interesting as the PAL game has international teams but it’s US counterpart is NHL Hockey and that has the NHL sides. I always found it interesting that apart from EA Sports Double Header every EA PAL game the actual cart is just the Genesis US release. It basically means no PAL optimisation whatsoever but that’s actually good as it means no problems when you run them in 60hz.
I didn't know that about EA Hockey. Is it the same for FIFA games?
@@RetroGamerBoyno they appear to be the same. On a side note World Cup Italia 90 has different player names across the 3 regions. The Japanese release has names closer to real players.
Without a doubt, Electronic Arts was the best 3rd party of the 16-bit generation. Sega was very fortunate that they supported the Genesis way more/better than the SNES.
Also, the EA boxart on average for the European market is way better than the North American versions. Tons of the NA versions have this terribly outdated border around them with much smaller artwork.
Yup Europe got full box artwork and NA seemed to always get it shrunk down.
ShakFu CD nice, I love SEGA I'm a SEGA kid, SEGA Genesis Road Rash 1-3 is my favorite
Nice. Sega was awesome back in the day.
Great video Mike!
Maybe it’s the Canadians in me, but I feel NHL 94 should be at the top of most electronic arts lists. For guys like me, NHL 94 is like a right of passage
To be honest I have about 16 games to put in the top 5.
I always love to see a shout-out for Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday! It's a shame how EA are considered these days; they created so many interesting and unusual games during this time period that don't get talked about enough these days. Great work, really enjoyed the video!
I'm amazed that some of their old catalog does not get a reboot. They don't even release their old games on modern platforms.
@@RetroGamerBoy we'll never see a rerelease of Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday unfortunately. The Buck Rogers licence has been mired in legal issues for years now
Great video Mike! I have a standard box of Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego with the sportswatch included sticker on the front. It includes the EA-sportswatch, still sealed in it's original packing. Isn't this a variant you don't have? 😛
Wow, I had no idea this existed. You'll have to send me a photo.👍
@@RetroGamerBoy Sure, I just mailed you some pictures.
Well done Mike - good milestone on your way to (sega) world domination
😂
Great video! Star Flight also had a way better manual in the US release, with full colour artwork, so I'm going to sell my PAL copy to get it.
Yup I've seen it. It looks awesome, I'll need to get a copy some day.
Awesome Aussie collection 🦘🦘🦘🦘
🤘😝🤘
Excellent video. So For John Madden American Football are the Carts and Manual the same for both Variants as the manual is very thick. Also will you do an Accolade video similar to this??
Kind of wish you could have intertwined some gameplay for each title. But cool collection!
It took over 70 hrs to put the video together, I just ran out of time. Originally I wanted the footage behind each game.
Love road rash. Shame we never got a port of shadow of the beast 3
Ya I think by that time EA were switching to 32bit development.
Just completed the ea classic set neeed to get my hands on one of those boxes!
It's a neat little package and it looks cool on the shelf.
@RetroGamerBoy didn't realise there was only a handful of those games till I saw the box on ebay a while back I unknowingly almost completed it by chance
So I was gonna buy one of those boxes, saw them on ebay an excitedly showed the Mrs as you do 😂 an got told off cos I'm always just buying shit as she calls it, an my birthday was coming up an I had a ban put on me cos she runs outta ideas, anyway to cut it short the listing is gone are they all sold out? She was gutted 😂😂
@@davidgalbraith694 I have one copy left, just in case anything happened in shipping to others. Ping me on my email, found on my main channel, and we can see if we can get you one.👍
Просто супер ролик. Спасибо Майк. Привет из России
Hi 👋 EA was so big on the console. Did Russia get bootleg versions of EA games?
Why no 32x on the tower of power at the end?
I haven’t seen a video where you mention the OG infrared wireless controller and transmitter
Well this was a Mega Drive EA video rather than a Sega EA video. I covered the 3 button officially licenced WKK infrared controllers in a previous video. Or do you mean the 6 button infrared controllers?
@@RetroGamerBoy I didn’t even know about the WKK 3 button, I only knew of the Sega 6 button. I’ve been trying to find all the official Sega released addons that would just improve the greatness that is the Tower of Power. Karaoke is the grail obviously. In the US they had this program where you bought 3 official Sega games and mail the receipt in and they send you Genesis themed mini speakers to plug into your model 1 genesis/megadrive stereo port
Hi, Mike. You forgot about College Slam as US ex
Wasn't that Acclaim?
Hi, why do you consider Larussa Baseball (the one with the larger box) as a game that is part of the Megadrive collection and not Genesis?I don't see any "megadrive" logo on the box
It is part of the Genesis collection. What I'm saying is that it is also part of the Mega Drive despite the Genesis branding. EA released it in Australia and to save money all they did was put a sticker on it rather than rebrand it.
@@RetroGamerBoy ok i understand !
Therefore I thought I had the fullset megadrive pal EUR AND AUS but you called my certainties into question! I'm going to have to buy more stuff because of you! THANKS .
Are you looking to collect all the titles released in PAL?
I am. And it's a nightmare, just as I think I've got a complete list someone else pops up with something I knew nothing about. It's great fun though living out my childhood dreams.
Ok i am french and it existing a french inventory book sum up all titles megadrive pal , genesis , aus and japanese games , do you want title of book and writter to found it ?thank for your great video.
I bought a few games together and power monger came with it. It’s a genesis version but it has a print mistake as the back cover is F22 interceptor. It came in a proper EA box and had the megadrive 92 - 93 EA booklet with it. Does any one know anything about this?
Yes I know it well. Quite a famous or infamous print error.
Oh not so rare then.
Here I was thinking I’d accidentally found something unique.
Would you know what value this has I can’t find anything on it. I’m not a genesis collector and would consider trading it for megadrive games. Cheers
I just noticed you have a Neo Geo X. Does that thing make you sad?
It's conflicting, I love the idea and it's well made with a great Arcade stick and the thumb stick is also micro switched. But the emulation is shit. Sooooo it's useless 😅
James pond soft box?
Really!!! Wow I never knew about that. I need to get it.
@@RetroGamerBoy yeah one I'm still after too. Tricky to find. Believe it is the only aus one
Interesting not interesting that Starflight game, lol. Maybe when I retire, hopefully soon, I'll give it a shot.
It's very cool.
EA
Yup
Zelda on the CRT? Really? Traitor! 😆
Sega and Zelda fanboy right here.
Nooo, play Soleill aka Crusader of Centy, or Ax battler for SMS, Story of Thor/Legend of Oasis or just any other Sega game! 🤣
r u crazy!?
Yes
