There is some cool information about Zillion: The anime was on TV here in Brazil and TecyToy made a big AD campaing about it, which made them to sell A LOT of this toy, way more than Sega sold in Japan itself. This is what give the confidence for Sega to give the license to TecToy and the rest is history :)
So, Zillion was a laser tag-like toy first. The anime was made as an advertising tie-in, and the video games were made based on the anime. The toy mold was used for the Light Phaser, which oddly wasn't used with the Zillion video games. The first Zillion is nothing like Metroid, though. It's a straight-up Impossible Mission clone. I prefer Zillion II, which people trash, but is a pretty solid run 'n gun.
What I like about some of these master system games is their unique atmosphere. Like Spellcaster and Cyborg Hunter. Very moody games. It takes me right back to 30 years ago playing these games. And still all the visuals, sounds and music is preserved in memory.

I've really been enjoying your Master System videos. I'm always looking for new games to collect for the system, and this has put a few on the list. Thanks very much!
I had Battle Outrun as a kid and loved it! I always thought it was cool the way you drove into the back of the lorry at the end of the stage, it was just like Knight rider! Haha. And Chase H.Q was one of my favourites so yeah, great stuff! Good memories
It's amazing how poor the master system did in the US. Even though the Saturn and Dreamcast didn't sell all that well, I knew multiple people back then who owned those systems. I literally knew no one that had a master system
Yeah, it's almost criminal how little known sms was. I was literally the only person I knew who had one and that was towards the end of it's lifespan(I had a master systems2) but man I loved it. And even though I was always a Nintendo kid, my master system managed to edge out Nintendo. In fact it was my love of my master system that led to me getting a genesis.
I've been on a Kung Fu Kid kick ever since I started this nostalgic rabbit hole known as SMS flashbacks. I had the game as a child and remember playing this for hours. Thank you for featuring it! I cheered out loud in the kitchen while making lunch when it came on.
Great video as usual. Spell Caster is a prequel to Mystic Defender, as you noted, and both of them are localizations of Kujaku Ou (Peacock King), a manga/OVA about an exorcist (if memory serves, anyway). There were also NES Kujaku Ou games.
The SMS is still my favourite console of all time. It’s what made me into a gamer. I had played Atari and Nintendo. But when I got my hands on a sms. I knew it was something special. Eventually got my own console. And till this day. Probably still my most played console ever. I’ll love to see more of these videos. 1, I just love these games :) and 2, I think it deserves it. Such a under rated system in North America.
I didn't know about the SMS even till I was in my late 20s. 38 now I think its the most underappreciated system. Saturn gets its love. Only problems I had with it was pause button and sometimes the tone of music. Ear grating in some games. Unbelievable library that does indeed continue to surprise.
Sh!! You guys are gonna bring up master system games and system prices and I'm trying to get in on that! It would be so cool if they made a Sega master system mini. It's a console that had so little exposure in the west back in the day but same with turbo grafx 16/PC-E and now the minis are selling like hotcakes on Amazon Japan!
@@Fanuc_Operator1990 Could always get an Odroid or Raspberry Pi. Have the entire library including the crazy expensive great games like Power Strike 2 and such.
An interesting fact is that the MS was never "popular" in Brazil in the sense that every body loved it. It was popular because it was cheap(er) and any shop that sold a vacuum cleaner or a toaster would also sell TecToy stuff. Most people did not love it that much, and from what I remember from my childhood, everyone really wanted a Nintendo (clone), but very few people had access to one up until early 90s. In my experience growing up in the late 80s, and remembering my friends and collective opinion, the "Master" (as it was known the) was not that desired at all, and it was common to witness or even say "ugh a Master?!" back then when at another kid's house. Hope you dig the personal insight of my own memories of the thing back in late 80s early 90s in southern Brazil.
"Deafening absence of soundtrack" - what a phrase! Seriously, nice job!! Cool format, I'm also exploring MS library and it helps to have something like Alf explored for me, haha! Some serious AVGN material there...
I grew up with the SMS. Repurchased a console and some games last year, and have been collecting old favorites plus games I never knew existed on the console 30 + years later. Once the Genesis came on the scene, it took over, and many titles that came after on the SMS I never even knew about. Very cool that this console is still surprising me at this age.
Can't believe what a hidden gem this little master system was! I'm wondering why all those years we Americans always had Nintendo everywhere, and these great looking colorful fast and dynamic looking games never surfaced??
I was the only kid in my whole school that had a Master System. Everyone else had the NES, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Loved this console, and it was technically superior to the NES too, but Nintendo had a strangle hold on all the third party licenses for games, so the Master System could not compete with it head to head in the USA. That’s really what led to it’s downfall.
Favorite games on SMS were: Black Belt, Double Dragon, Shinobi, Astro Warrior, and Choplifter. This was my first gaming system and I have fond memories of playing those games. The music in Black Belt is so amazing and still pops into my head from time to time.
Yes, please make more videos about Master System exclusives! The Master System is my favorite Sega system, but there are tons of SMS games that I missed back in the day. Also, thank you for introducing me to Kung Fu Kid, Cyborg Hunter and Zillion. :)
Outrun was THE game, that made me buy my first home console, the game that made me interested in, and started collecting games in general, and the game that made me a huge SEGA fan until this day. Outrun, Virtua Racing, Daytona, Sega Rally, Sega Touring Cars, Sega Rally 2. The golden age of video games imo.
Kung Fu Kid is one of the most underated game of the MS library. Simple gameplay but awesome controls which make this title a pleasure to walk through. On a technical level, it has no real flaws for a 1st generation game. Same goes for Bomber Raid, I love this game as well.
I grew up in Brazil with a Master System, and I was thinking about Basketball Nightmare just yesterday! So many exclusives to look at: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Astec Adventure, Kenseiden, the official Brazilian Hacks of Wonder Boy (Monica no Castelo do Dragão) Zillion II (I like it better than the first one) and two games you showcased in the intro: Master of Darkness and Masters of Combat.
I really enjoyed my MS, countless hours me and my brothers spent playing together on Secret Command, Scramble Spirits and Double Dragon. Still got them all :-)
Other exclusives: Trivial Pursuit, Phantasy Star, World Soccer, Psychic World, Golvellius, Alex kidd in High Tech World, Asterix 1 and 2, Master of Darkness, Kenseiden, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Hoshi o Sagashite.
Honestly I’m hoping for more of this. I almost want to try and find more “hidden gem” type experiences in my retro gaming and the Master System seems to be the dictionary definition of a hidden gem for those of us who never had even heard of SEGA until they put out the Genesis/Mega Drive. I might’ve seen an Outrun cabinet before I saw a Genesis, but I didn’t put two and two together till much later on. No matter what, keep doing what you’re doing and hopefully you stay safe.
Any of the Wonder Boy series are totally worth playing on the SMS. Renegade is an excellent beat 'em up, and Vigilante or the Streets of Rage ports are also decent. Chuck Rock II is a really good platformer, as are several of the Disney games (Aladdin, Castle of Illusion, and Land of Illusion); the while Cool Spot and the Asterix series of platformers are okay. Amongst horizontal run-and-gun games, The NewZealand Story is a bit cutesy, but also immensely fun; RoboCop vs The Terminator and Alien³ are good too. Rambo: First Blood, Part II is about as good as an 8-bit overhead run-and-gun gets, with Time Soldiers being very much above average; The Ninja is an early game, it can be an acquired taste though. For shmups, the R-Type port is so good, it almost justifies buying the SMS all by itself, definitely would have been a killer app for the console if the SMS hadn't been buried by Nintendo's craftiness and Sega's inept marketing. The Fantasy Zone series, the Power Strike series, and Sagaia are all great shmups as well; the Forgotten Worlds port is respectable. Bonanza Bros and Gain Ground are also on the Genesis/MD, but their gameplay more naturally fits the SMS; the port of Paperboy also fits like a glove on the Master System. Besides the quality racing on OutRun and Hang-On, the port of Micro Machines is nearly as good as the 16-bit versions; Buggy Run is worth playing too.
Growing up in the UK or maybe it was just the town I was in but the Master System was the console every kid had, I didn't even know anyone who had an NES until I got to high school around 93. I absolutely adored my Master System with Alex Kidd built in, the first 2 Sonic games were great and unique, Castle of Illusion and something called The Ninja I think. Great memories and maybe I'll have to look for one again
It's funny, I had the opposite experience. But I knew about the Master because I bought the magazines. The C^$GS, the Amstradgx6000(whtever), the Nes, the Master and the PC Engine.
Great video man. I've been playing video games since I was a kid in the 90's, and collecting off and on for many years and I STILL have not found a Master System at a garage sale, flea market, or thrift store. I realize I have to succumb to Ebay to start my collection and finally have one. Sigh.
grew up playing the master system, and out of this list i had kung fu kid and bomber raid. maybe i was so little, but i totally enjoyed both of those titles. having a controller with turbo really help too.
Battle Outrun actually reminds me of Rad Racer more than anything else. The way the screen curves & the cars block you is pretty much exactly like that game, and the game has to be maneuvered in the same way too. The fact that you basically have exactly 3 lanes to navigate in order to avoid cars is exactly like Rad Racer.
I'm pretty sure Basketball Nightmare was available in Canada because as a kid I borrowed it from a friend. I remember really loving the artwork and gameplay.
I never spent much time on the platform. It is a shame and I should actually take the time to do it. If you ever need any help with Tectoy's releases in Brazil just let me know. I will be more than glad to help out so more English speaking folks can enjoy the games that were only released here. Thank you for yet another awesome video!
Since just completing the US set this month i loved this video, happy to see some of the Euro releases i need to keep an eye out for! As always thank you SLX!
Whats wrong with Psycho fox? Its an incredible game, especially for its time, its also the predecessor of one of my all time favourite platformers: Magical Hat's Turbo Flight! Adventure.
Psycho Fox was one of my favourite games in my childhood. Played it for hours and hours :) Play more often with the tiger or monkey, they are easier to handle. In stage 1-3 (near the end) you can punch "open" a cloud in order take a sneak peek into the later stages ;). Take also a look at Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2 (and even part 3 soon)!
Two things: 1- Give us Part 2 and 3 of this video! I really enjoyed seeing two of my favorites there: Zillion and Asterix. By the way, Asterix had an interesting presence in Brazil. You could buy the comics at newsstands and bookshops in the 80s and 90s. 2- I'm a Brazilian and I actually had a Master System back in the 80s and 90s. It came with Safari Hunt and Hang On (no cart needed). I went on to buy many other titles, such as California Games, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Sonic, Wanted, Gangster Town and so on. Even back then I could see its flaws (no pause button on the controller! What?!?). It was very popular in Brazil, but the licensed Nintendo stuff was also coming in hard when we got to the 90s. They were like the cool new kid at school. I remember playing Zelda 2, Mario 3, Batman, and Ninja Gaiden and being blown away by those games.
SLX: "If you like this kind of content let me know in the comments and I'll see what I can do. Hell, I might even..." Me: "... do another Saturn giveaway????" SLX: "... get up enough courage to give Psycho Fox another go." Me: "Shit!"
Dude, love your channel. You are the granddaddy of all things Sega! Would really appreciate further parts to this mini-series. Please cover Kenseiden! I LOVE that game - it's seriously awesome: check it out for yourself :)
I love spellcaster, got it as a teen and played it until I beat it. I still have it and will return to it on occasion. I have Zillion and Zillion 2 that I got as a teen and have never finished those.
Hello, i just discovered your channel and i have to say you are doing great content. Thank you for your effort and best regards from Germany. Stay healthy!!
Suggestion for part 2: Quartet. This game is my childhood... I would play it with a friend of mine whose name was Marie, French for Mary, one of the playable characters... We thought it was awesome back in the days. It was available on "gaming computers" such as C64, but as far as consoles go, only available on SMS. Needless to say, great video as always 😉👍
Spell Caster is an **heavily** edited and altered game based on the manga and anime series Ku-Jyaku-Oh (the Peakock(Phoenix) King, about a Japanese Buddhist Monk that used Shinto and Hindu Magic to hunt and slay demons. When Sega of America localized the game, a lot of the original storyline was altered, along with changing the sprite of the main character and removing all references to Buddhism, Shinto, and Hindu mysticism also removed, even calling a Yakisoba food stand as having "Spaghetti". Zillion is based on the anime series Red Photon Bullet: ZILLION and the light phaser is based on the Zillion pistol and the Zillion Laser Tag set, the pistol was re-purposed as the the Light Phaser. Art design and conceptual design elements of the anime was a huge influence on Sega's Phantasy Star, and the Fantasy Zone robo-ship Opa Opa is a mascot character in the series. Cyborg Hunter had it's storyline and all the character names drastically altered from the original Sonic Soldier Borg-Man (as in (Cy)borg-Man not "borgmen" ) game. It's a great anime series, heavily inspired by the live action Japanese super hero shows of the Super Sentai genre Both the Zillion anime series and Sonic Soldier Borg Man were co-founded by Sega Enterprises, so it makes sense they would make action-adventure games based on those anime shows here's what Sonic Soldier Borg-Man was like... it was pretty kick ass... ruclips.net/video/Yb6Xix2NcAA/видео.html

It's funny, I had the opposite experience. But I knew about the Master because I bought the magazines. The C^$GS, the Amstradgx6000(whtever), the Nes, the Master and the PC Engine.
Zillion was my first game I got after I got my SMS for Christmas. Still love to play through it every few years.
Zillion is equal parts Metroid and puzzle game. An absolute delight. In addition, Bomber Raid is a fantastic 8-bit shooter.
Amother great vid man. It's especially nice to see Zillion and Kung Fu Kid get some love.
Double Hawk reminds me of Operation Wolf. That game really made you feel like you were shooting an Uzi. What young boy didn't love that?
Zillion is a definite must play. So is Shadowcaster what a great game that was.
I got Basketball Nightmare for my SMS back in the day, loved the hell out of that game. Toronto Ontario
Had the Zillion Lightgun Set, in the U.K., when I was about eight, so 1988. Never realised it was the same as the Sega Mastersystem Lightgun!
Thank you sir for a perfect video to enjoy with my morning coffee..! Much love brotha!
Great video. It's nice that you put the real stinkers in there with the good ones!
As always you give us nice memories, i remember when i was a kid that one of my all time favorite was kung fu kid , please do video about kenseiden .
Since just completing the US set this month i loved this video, happy to see some of the Euro releases i need to keep an eye out for!
As always thank you SLX!
The MS was kinda big here in brazil btw. Long after the system was discontinued you could find licensed emulated consoles here.
Whats wrong with Psycho fox?
Its an incredible game, especially for its time, its also the predecessor of one of my all time favourite platformers: Magical Hat's Turbo Flight! Adventure.
called decap attack in the west...yes its prequel, psycho fox, was great ^^
Battle Outrun and Double Hawk look like ones I'll need to try.
In this video, Double Hawk besides similarity to Nam 1975, the game also has an influence to Cabal.
I loved basketball nightmare as a kid! Rented it many times from the video shop. Its in my collecting now :)
Great videos bro.
I had a Master System as a kid, and Zillion was one of the first games I had for it. I think Apple might have been my first crush.
The Master System is still my favorite. Thanks for the video.
Yes, I would really love to see more on this series! It's very interesting, very interesting indeed!
This was my first (new) console. I loved this video. More lists like this, please!!!
I was trying to find out Cyborg Hunter's name literally for the past 23 years.
Thank you!
Zillion is the friggin BEST! Kung Fu Kid, Kenseiden, Spellcaster... great stuff!
Kenseiden is an awesome a SMS-exclusive.
Two things:
1- Give us Part 2 and 3 of this video!
Hell, I might even..."
Me: "... do another Saturn giveaway????"
SLX: "... get up enough courage to give Psycho Fox another go."
Me: "Shit!"
There's just something so charming about the MS graphics.
To start, I love your videos and yes it would be great if you did more videos of this obscure SMS titles
What a console! Master System♥️. Awesome video, AGAIN!
Ghost House has always been one of my favorites that was only on the Master System
Hello, i just discovered your channel and i have to say you are doing great content. Thank you for your effort and best regards from Germany. Stay healthy!!
I sunk many hours into Double Hawk as a child, especially the two player with my older brother.
Great showcase of some exclusive classics! Except Alf of course.
It's a great anime series, heavily inspired by the live action Japanese super hero shows of the Super Sentai genre
Both the Zillion anime series and Sonic Soldier Borg Man were co-founded by Sega Enterprises, so it makes sense they would make action-adventure games based on those anime shows
here's what Sonic Soldier Borg-Man was like... it was pretty kick ass...
