even as an NES owner... I was always envious of my friend's master system. The graphics and the colours totally blew me away, and still do. It absolutely blew the NES out of the water in terms of graphics.... those colours are so vibrant! Some of these games even look as good as some early 16 bit games.
One of the best Christmas's of my life. 1986 me, my brother and sister opened our very own master system. We played Wonder boy and Snail Maze for weeks. Shortly after we got Double Dragon. Needless to say some of the best times of our childhood. Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Alex Kidd, California Games, Astro Warrior, After Burner and Hang on. The only game I ever saw my dad play was Hang on. I remember how impressed we were that he beat the night level. Lol. I have him and my mom to thank for all the amazing memories. Miss ya, dad.
Phantasy Star was the first to do a LOT that it never really got any recognition for. Hell, it’s what got me into RPGs and video game development back in my youth.
Yeah the legend of zelda isn't an RPG. It's an action-adventure. It very deliberately has all the action be in real time, only has one character (so it's not really role playing) and doesn't have stuff like levelling up (unless you count getting the white Cape thing or whatever it's called that turns link white and ups his defense). Zelda is closer to a metroidvania than an RPG. That game and metroid and kid icarus coming out all at the same time were all meant to be in the same kinda vein, Nintendo's attempt to expand games from just being arcade replicas into something bigger.
@@duffman18 I mean, you're not wrong about Zelda not being an RPG, but having only one character has nothing to do with whether or not a game has roleplaying. Also, the Meteoidvania games, ironically, _are_ RPGs
I'd say Asterix os the best looking game on the Master System. The character sprites are amazing for an 8-bit game, it really looks like an early 16-bit game.

I really like how Alien 3 looks. Parallax scrolling, the lights look cool, the platforms have that slightly tilted view instead of just being straight on, and a fair amount of detail considering. That R-Type port looks really good for what it is too.
I really enjoyed Kenseiden. It was hard but fun. I never heard of the Ottifants, and with scrolling like that, I'd have needed motion sickness pills to play it. That Tectoy Virtua fighter actually looks like it has less animation lag than the Genesis version.
As someone who grew up with R-Type on the Master System and didn’t know of any other version, I was blown away by the graphics on that game. TecToy in Brazil has been producing licensed Master System amd Mega Drive consoles until as recently as 2016. There are many titles ( like the Virtua Fighter and SFII ) that are shockingly high quality and mostly unknown to the rest of the world. I guess it's impossible to look different with the obsession everyone has for better graphics. Better graphics don't equal better games.
Hey thanks for showcasing Kenseiden! It's a more methodical platformer that may not be for everyone. Some of the platforming segments are frustrating because Hayato (the samurai) gets an insane amount of knockback when hit that you often can't recover from quickly enough if you are near an edge. Things get a lot easier when you obtain more moves for the character, as well as the HP extension and defensive charms. I actually prefer it without the FM sound, surprisingly enough. You're quite right about both Asterix games and Ninja Gaiden on the SMS (I think it plays better than NG1 and 2 on the NES and ties with 3).

Psycho Fox was a fantastic platformer that had fun mechanics like the ability to change characters that have their own specialties and the maze minigame was cool too! Lord of the Sword was VERY tough but another great game too! I like the channel and videos but we definitely have different takes on a lot of SMS games!
The version of Kenseiden you were showcasing in this video had the bad sound and music which is the wrong version that is typically found on most emulators but is a bad sound and music interpretation from the original cartridge version which sounds 10 times better I assure you. I played the original and beat it many times as it is my all time favorite Sega Master System game.
You can switch to western chipset sound if you config FM chipset off. Try it and you'll have the sounds you want. It's not wrong, it's in the Japanese machines.
Finding Kenseiden and Psycho Fox hard to control and classing R-Type's sprite flicker a serious issue might make enjoying the best of the Master System's library difficult. These are A-Tier games but a little nostalgia probably goes a long way too.
No disrespect to anyone who enjoys Kenseiden or Psycho Fox, but they certainly aren’t A tier games in my book. And to be clear, the sprite flicker in R-type is a serious issue to its merit graphically, not its overall quality.
Deep Duck Trouble is a fantastic game for the Master System! That is one game that every SMS fan should play! Also, while I don't usually tend to agree with much of what RGT85 has to say, I have to admit that his suggestion of Jurassic Park for the system was great one. I happened to play that game as a kid on the Game Gear and was admittedly quite impressed! It's a very solid game and a good looking one too.
I am so happy that your are covering SMS as it has quite a worldwide fanbase. There are many classics hope you can cover individually. I am still surprised that Phantasy Star hasn't been highlighted. Awesome format!! Lovely mate!
*You need to always get or collect bird-fly or egg-fly on the Genesis sir then you won’t always hit an enemy and die of frustration on Psycho Fox sir! You and your daughter will enjoy it now as it IS a fantastic game to the hearts of many here!* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
These are great but you all know Snail Maze is the pentacle of 8 bit power.
HA!
The thunder's effects in Jurassic Park is amazing.
Man I love your channel! Your content is top notch and your knowledge about the games and passion for them is inspiring!
Psycho Fox was a fantastic platformer that had fun mechanics like the ability to change characters that have their own specialties and the maze minigame was cool too! Lord of the Sword was VERY tough but another great game too! I like the channel and videos but we definitely have different takes on a lot of SMS games!
I wasn't a Master System kid. I had the NES and library for library they were very different systems.
"Heres a bunch of games you picked. I hate them all. **** You. Bye." I love you man
The version of Kenseiden you were showcasing in this video had the bad sound and music which is the wrong version that is typically found on most emulators but is a bad sound and music interpretation from the original cartridge version which sounds 10 times better I assure you. I played the original and beat it many times as it is my all time favorite Sega Master System game.
You can switch to western chipset sound if you config FM chipset off. Try it and you'll have the sounds you want.
It's not wrong, it's in the Japanese machines.

Looks like the first stage of"Revenge of Shinobi." Let's be realistic please on
@Karl Burnett You're right. I also think FM sound is very, very hit and miss. Mostly miss.
Thumbs up for Asterix the secret mission !!
It was the first console RPG that was years ahead of it's time. It was also developed by Reiko Kodama who is one of the original OGs of Sega who contributed to their early dominance.
IndieRockGuitar didn’t SLX already cover PS1 in the first video?
@@retro_boy_advance Oh. I will search for it. Thanks for the info
Wasn't a Sega Master Fan before...I'm remaining with that sentiment, but what I can say is I respect the system alot more now.
Sega only sold 1 million of Master System consoles in the USA, but 8 millions of consoles in Europe. Nintendo dominated the market in the USA.
it was 6 million in europe? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles_by_region#Region-wide_2
also Quartet. what a fond memory i have of that game. n it's visually impressive as well
R-Type had such an awesome music, too bad is not much remembered
That kenseiden reminds me a lot of shinobi
LOL, after each Game i thought when will Jurassic Park show Up. And it's the Last Game in your Video :D Thank You! Best Sega Channel on RUclips!
Holy Crap that Virtua Fighter on the SMS actually looks fun! It's also pretty! WOW that SF2 game looks amazing too!
1:51 ALESTE! I love this game!
Yeh i have copy game catgridge of master of darkness for sms and gamegear
Great game its the castlevania of sega 8 bits
It feels like Castlevania, but done in the style of Hammer Horror.
James Pond 2 Robocod is one of the best Christmas games of the 90s. 😍
Wow! Great video. I am officially a Master fan!
Thanks for making awesome SEGA videos! 🥰🥰
I so admire street fighter 2 here. It always seemed characteristic of the master system to go all out and give all it had.
