It's so weird how everyone learns of soul-tethering items like phylacteries through Harry Potter now. It's pretty much the last one on the list. The One Ring is among the oldest well-known stories, and it's pretty famous. Yet ppl still think of Harry Potter first. But the Phylactery idea is about 30-40 years older than the Harry Potter books.

You are right though honestly phymactery isn't what I think of for The One Ring. Cursed Artifact or Source of Corruption comes to mind before anything else.
I used to play DnD as a kid a lot and undead were my favorite so the whole concept is where I learned it from. Always made me think it could only do 1 thing, that it couldn't have any additional effects beyond being a container to keep your soul safe.
Another one I know about is from Dishonored with the witch named Granny Rags who also used a phylactory.
