Had the same thing happen on a '00 Silverado 1500 heater hose connection a while back. Was so pissed! Took me 15 minutes just to fish all the busted pieces out of the hose - must've been in 30 pieces! I had some choice words for GM engineers that day. GRRR!!
+motoYam82 Hi Ivan!!! I would like your advice/input on a situation with my vehicle. I had an issue at the technical school I'm attending and would like to know what you think. Can I email you? My email is tgoodm1@hotmail.com. Thanks!!!
Thanks for the video, helped me a lot, I have the same problem with my Toyota '07, Shift Solenoid B is the problem. Can I drive my truck with this problem? Thanks
Hey nice diag once again. That battery post and that trans connector sure looked like a smurf took a dump on it, big pile of blue crap. Man, that sure sucked about that plastic piece of garbage snapping off, I hate cheap plastic crap on cars. Also, what Autel model scan tool were you using in this video, it seemed to support quite a bit of bi directional controls. I own a snap on ethos+ that does not do anywhere near close to what your Autel scan tool can do. Thanks for the good video.
It's the older MaxiDas DS708, my first "real" scanner. It's still my go-to for quick scans and tests just because it is so fast and coverage is very good.
Wow I am going to have to get me one of those. I think Harbor Freight of all places sells those. I think they sell it for around 800.00 and then you use one of there 20-25% off coupons. Man my Snap-on Ethos cost double that price and does not do half of what that Autel will do. Unless this is not the same scanner as yours but I believe it is. www.harborfreight.com/autel-maxidas-automotive-diagnostic-and-analysis-system-62385.html Anyway thanks for the info, I am off to watch your part 2 you just posted. Take care.
Autel makes some great stuff. I just picked up the Maxisys MS906TS this summer. Big price tag, but the thing is amazing. Even has a TPMS programming tool built in. Cost just about 1/10th of what Snap-On wants for the Verus. Got it at JB Tool sales online. Cheapest price I could find. That said, I think they sent me a global unit instead of a USA unit - they are different. I've got a bunch of models in the list I've never heard of - all sold overseas. I'm not what you'd call "tech savvy", so I got a kick out of being able to connect to the internet with the scan tool out in my barn. Saves me a trip inside to look stuff up. WiFi signal is pretty weak out there, so sometimes it's quicker to just run inside and use the desktop. People tell me it's like a tablet. I've never owned one (probably haven't ever seen one, LOL) so I couldn't tell you there.
Ivan great video! plastic nipple or metal nipple, would of broke anyways. With plastic it gets brittle and with metal pipe coolant gets acidic and rusts and leaks as you know. Nature of the beast and made in China. keep up the fantastic videos!
Well pull up and pull down only denote how the circuit is used to operate when you have high or low codes it tells you if your haveing a ground problem or a power problem a power problem would set a low voltage code a bad ground problem or high resistance would set a voltage high code so you kind of have an idea of why that cicuit caused the ECM to tattle on it am I right Ivan THE MAN! Lol happy new year
Knowing if it's pull up or pull down should be determined first a high code is a high code a low code is a low code the switching design changes but ohms law doesn't thanks
Ivan, amazing to see almost all US driven cars with corroded battery poles. How easy is it to get some "Vaseline" and clean and use the vaseline. By the way, that coolant might have leaked some time on the connector too. Nice beard man.
Damn. On the upside if it was that brittle going over a large bump probably would have bust it and caused the car to dump all its coolant. You probably just saved that customer from getting stranded and maybe even an engine overheat. I actually work with a guy who has fabricated new metal joints for me when i've bust this plastic crap. He's a wizz with the tig welder and some tube and fittings.
Great video Ivan.. have a corolla 2009 that harsh shifting.. i'm guessing it's gotta be a damn solenoid. What kind of scanner you're using and where can i find one like that ?
Coolant is the worst thing to deal with too. No matter if there is a petcock to aid in drainage or if you bump old plastic and it breaks the shit goes everwhere and it seems no matter how large your catch pan it the coolant finds the floor.
hey, Ivan!! i noticed you're working with an autel ds708. finally something i can relate to. unfortunately i can't afford a 13k verus edge. can you please do more diagnostics, repairs with that? thank you.
Nice video Ivan & I see you got a new laptop or replaced your screen. No matter how careful you are it's so easy to break stuff trying to get down into tight places and if you try to take it apart the same applies...just part of the job.
The silver lining is that if it broke that easily, then it should be replaced anyways, so in my mind I saved the customer from being stranded somewhere :)
I would say yes I got mine for 50$ at the toyota dealer and it comes as a whole part upper radiator hose. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/9-YgrSPIbcJwq4HkqLGSt2dkHX7UVu5fjRgZKGQpw9rxuJrinbkg9-b8vmZPdmFpZ-fGf3OtHW4_
But it's up to you if you want to charge and that coolant looked bad supposed to look a little reddish if it was my car replace a lower radiator hose and the thermostat also
Hey Ivan! Does your DS708 Autel lock up under special functions sometimes? I replaced the SD Card with a new one and copied fresh set of data to it from the update tool on the PC but occasionally it locks up and I have to hard power off and back on. Thanks
BlazerGuy1983 mine did that...then it got to the point where it would freeze at the home screen with the manufactures icons. i called, and they had me send it in. they send me a brand new unit free of charge...and my unit went out of warranty back in 2014@
I believe 3D printers will become standard equipment in repair shops in the very near future. Keep a close eye on companies like Dorman (as much as I hate their parts) I think as an investment there will money to be made.
Hello brother I have toyota corolla 2009 automatic transmission not Shifting from 1st to second the rpm on the rise not shifting from first to second unless out my leg from the pedal not found any code or check engine light
Do you know if the valve body is under the transmission or on the front if it's on front it not fun the transmission should be a ASIN right I know on older Volkswagen MK4 there was a five speed model it was a Japanese built transmission and the oil pan was towards the front of the car it was a pain in the butt to get accès I had to remouve the front end but you might be lucky that the pan could be under great time to change the oil and filter .
Hi I did some searching on u tube and it looks like the oil pan is under the transmission so I think it's going to be easy but the question can you buy the solenoid separately at the Toyota dealership?
Ha how did you guess? It is getting warmer outside, plus I have to attend my brother's wedding soon so the beard might be gone by the end of the month!
Hello Can you explain how you got 5.96 (4:47) and the on paper you wrote 2.4 Ohms. ( 8:38) For S2. Also was the measurements back-probed at the Trans Wire going to the Trans or at the ECU/TCM?
Thanks for the reply. I do wonder what type of effect temperature has on resistance of solenoids. Most literature values are set for 20deg Celsius? I wonder if it was working half the time. So sometimes its open sometimes its not hence the 2 different readings. Also were you back probing on the Trans Wire exclusively (inside the transmission leading strait to the solenoids) . Or from the Wire Harness which connects to the transmission wire and the ECM/TCM?
Also I have this issue with a 06 Lexus IS250 RWD A960E Sealed Trans ( recently swapped from a is250 08) W/ P0977 CEL code is intermittent. All gears shift and I am not stuck on safety limp home mode) Also it seems like i have a slow acceleration during the mornings and it gets better as it warms up. Iv Back probed my ECM to the specificed S2 Solenoid. They all seemed within range. I hope i dont have to drop the pan and change out the solenoid As this trans was just swapped but i do have my old trans and i think those solenoids were good as is the transwire.
Thank you so much for this video. Here in Puerto Rico I get a lot of these cars with transmission solenoid codes... also, those with great beards, we salute you. Don't make the mistake of chopping that beard down, you're just going to start misdiagnosing cars.
LOL! GM is good for that ... :D I just got a '04 Olds Alero with the 3400 V6, 63k miles and change. Was rapping so loud my ears were ringing LOL. I knew it was valve related, due to the hollow sound, and slow cadence of it as it idled at 1,200 rpm. I just got the rear valve cover off, and lifted the #1 exhaust rocker right out - no tools needed, LOL! Yanked the threads right out! That was a new one for me ...
Great work, Ivan! This is perfect example of "Cascade Failure" (one fault causing/related to another). Hot coolant & time make stuff brittle- aluminum, brass, and plastic all eventually fail. Rock Auto has the S2 Shift solenoid for $103.79 Holy Crap. As for that coolant connection- CariD has it, even though it's Dorman, it looks good. www.carid.com/2009-toyota-corolla-engine-cooling-parts/dorman-coolant-pipe-34099680.html Happy Friday 13
Generally it's better to test a circuit under load I bet you Ivan does not rely on ohmage alone a winding might ohm out because the break is very close to each other but under load it fails to carry proper current to operate that component or circuit am I right Ivan
i envy you americans with all the information you have available to you diagnosis is a walk in the park, over the pond in the uk we have auto data and some generalised comments regarding code description and maybe a badly re-drawn wiring diagram if we are lucky.

Damn these multi part cliff-hangers. ;-)
You are an Excellent Tech,Mr Ivan,Ive Learned alot From Your Videos,Keepem Coming Please.
Good diag Ivan. I hate it when crap snaps like that coolant nipple.. Too much breakable plastic these days. Cheers :)
Yeah I was like why is there liquid running down my arm?? That plastic was so brittle, the remains of the nipple came out in 5 pieces!
Had the same thing happen on a '00 Silverado 1500 heater hose connection a while back. Was so pissed! Took me 15 minutes just to fish all the busted pieces out of the hose - must've been in 30 pieces! I had some choice words for GM engineers that day. GRRR!!

Great job Ivan, learnt a lot from you.God bless you.
Interesting process Ivan. Thanks and on to the next one...tomorrow. :)
Neat diagnosis
Sometimes the car manufacturers learn and the replacement nipple will be steel! Great job.

Great video Ivan.. have a corolla 2009 that harsh shifting.. i'm guessing it's gotta be a damn solenoid. What kind of scanner you're using and where can i find one like that ?
I touched the same leaking coolant junction in a rav 4 when I worked at the dealer and it squirted coolant right in my eye..
Ivan--that beard! It's Novosibirsk hip!
Coolant is the worst thing to deal with too. No matter if there is a petcock to aid in drainage or if you bump old plastic and it breaks the shit goes everwhere and it seems no matter how large your catch pan it the coolant finds the floor.
hey, Ivan!! i noticed you're working with an autel ds708. finally something i can relate to. unfortunately i can't afford a 13k verus edge. can you please do more diagnostics, repairs with that? thank you.
In some cases the DS708 can outrun the Verus! The old Autel is pretty quick!

That's the way I look at it...probably would have broke hitting a pothole or going down a rough road.
that coolant hose is very common to break I had to replace mine on my 2011 toyota rav4 was leaking coolant.
Should I charge the customer for it then? "It was only a matter of time" ;)
I would say yes I got mine for 50$ at the toyota dealer and it comes as a whole part upper radiator hose.

Nissan Patrols too! Leaning on the radiator and hearing something snap on the side of the radiator. >_
Nice! Looking forward to the fix. Thanks Ivan.
maybe the stuff from the battery also dripped on the coolant nipple and made it quite fragile
did that have orange coolant or was it just rusty
Austin Chase pink no orange
having same issue on my ford fusion. accompanied by a torque converter stuck open. (automatic trans) any recs?
Good job
No brass fittings lying around?
That crossed my mind...but it would have split the remaining piece of plastic junk lol
Hi, my car, it indicates the code p0973 selenoid "A" shift transmission low circuit and I don't know which one, can you help me? thanks!
Hey Ivan! Does your DS708 Autel lock up under special functions sometimes? I replaced the SD Card with a new one and copied fresh set of data to it from the update tool on the PC but occasionally it locks up and I have to hard power off and back on. Thanks

you need a 3d printer for printing parts that you break lol ... what do you do with the notebooks that you always write stuff on ?
I believe 3D printers will become standard equipment in repair shops in the very near future. Keep a close eye on companies like Dorman (as much as I hate their parts) I think as an investment there will money to be made.
So Ivan, was it the Solenoid or the ribbon cable?
Hold your horses! You'll find out in Part 2!
Damn, I didn't think things broke on Toyotas. :P
Hello brother
I have toyota corolla 2009 automatic transmission not Shifting from 1st to second the rpm on the rise not shifting from first to second unless out my leg from the pedal not found any code or check engine light

Sony HandyCam CX230

WOW Extreme close up Ivan! Thanks for the videos. Is your wife complaining about the beard yet??
Ha how did you guess? It is getting warmer outside, plus I have to attend my brother's wedding soon so the beard might be gone by the end of the month!
Mine does the same thing. At first she is into it..then she doesnt care either way and then she hates it. Usually within a month.
xD

like Sherlock , your awesome Ivan
oh come on those stupid plastic coolant fittings always break its the way it was designed.
Looks like it also needs a radiator cap.
lol good eye!
Dam good video, the treshold is 100k or more for High and you got 4-6k, maybe the resistance going higher under load.
Resistance going higher under load??????
Like an light bulb, i guess this is a crusty answer to the wiring.
Bigger bulb and voltmeter might be in part 2.
I have the same code in my 96 Toyota Corolla. And the code said solenoids
Thank you so much for this video. Here in Puerto Rico I get a lot of these cars with transmission solenoid codes... also, those with great beards, we salute you. Don't make the mistake of chopping that beard down, you're just going to start misdiagnosing cars.

motoYam82 imagine the situation without the beard... disastrous! (Looking fowrard to this diag video)

fantastic plastic
9:55 You can't know that unless you use THE TOOL;)
Rolling tupperware! :D
Don't you just hate it when you nipples break off? I just couldn't let this one go LOL. Sorry Great job Ivan
Ouch!!! Robust on the outside,,, brittle on the inside. Is that a Mexican Toyota?
VIN starts with a "J"...so this one is the pinnacle of high quality!
OOhhh !!!! We get the Mexican Toyota here. I wish you could see one of those. Everything is made of plastic as thick as an egg shell. Mechanics hate them because stuff breaks just by looking at it.
When my ex's nipples broke off it was the end of that relationship.
Number of cars Ivan has diagnosed - 6,512
Number of cars Ivan has diagnosed that are OBD1 - 3
How about "prehistoric OBD -4"? xD
If I was in ur area i would drop off a couple 160 baud ALDL cars (that have just a couple of sensors) ha
for a good case study
Snapping plastic. lol We all know the feeling haha
You can thank BMW for all that black plastic crap. It's very frustrating because these days you have to be very careful when working on cars with high mileage. You'll end up breaking even.
lol i did the same thing changing the battery i hit that hose and broke the stupid nipple
Suzu
cheap ass radiator plastics ehh? broke one my self.
cream of the crop.....or is that CRAP plastic
I cannot watch because of your camera bouncing around!
first
