Can I tell a story related to this game? I was born in England, and got into Baseball in 1988. A TV station called Channel Four showed highlights of the NBC GOW at 2.30 am! I taped the games, and watched them over and over again to pick up the rules and understand the game. In the winter that year, another station TSW showed the GOW too. On a broadcast from Fulton County stadium the Braves hosted the Cubs. Anyhow Sandberg came to the plate, and yes Bruce Sutter came on in relief for Atlanta. Bob Costas and Tony Kubek were again commentating. Bob started to tell us the viewers and Tony Kubek of how Bill Murray missed the "Sandberg Game" and desperately wanted to see it. Murray visited Costas at his New York apartment and the tape was put on. Murray revelled in the game as a diehard Cub fan. But, as Costas was telling the story Sutter threw him the splitter and Ryne promptly hit the ball out to left field! It was perfect synchronicity of great commentating and timing. I am still 32 years later a Yankee fan, but I love baseball. I now live in Ireland, and often my insomnia is perfect for watching night games with the time difference! As a MLB fan I loved this documentary, and the stories behind "The Sandberg Game".
Great Era. Great Game. Great Players. Class acts- all of them. Sandberg- a throwback to a different era- a great player with great skills with much humility. Today's players should mimic this guy.
I was only 1 when this game was played but Ryne Sandberg is still a huge reason I’m a Cubs fan to this day….the days of Ryno, Grace, Dunston, Dawson…Great teams in my early years!
NJ fella here and similarly fell in love in those years. Great hearing the same :) . What is it that we feel as fans , watching these videos , Kerry wood’s 20K game, take me out to the ballgame from the window ala a proverbial grandpa to us on WGN. Cubs fans are blessed. Lol
Saturday's game of the week is iconic for me living in a rural area with only 3 T.V. channels to even watch. I have very fond memories of growing up & watching Saturday's game of the week.
As elementary school kids, every morning during spring training me and my little brother woke up 2 hours before the school bus would come so we could walk to HoHoKam and wait for Sandberg to get to the stadium. My heart would beat a million times a second when I saw his red Porsche turn in off the main road. Over those years, he gave me quite a few of his autograph and I still have them all (back then the players parked in the grass soccer field next to the stadium so we could walk with them to the gate). Those moments (walking next to him) and autographs he gave to me got me through my parents divorce. He will never know but thanks Ryno for helping me through those tough times!
@Levi Roberts > What a fantastic story and memories you are fortunate to have experienced. Love these types of tales. Thanks for sharing it cause it gives different perspectives we would normally not even know about or that such things could have or did happen.
I drove school bus in Mesa, AZ. At that time, Cubs spring practiced at Fitch Park a block over from HoHoKam where they played pre-season games. I loved going out after my morning run. The players were friendly and accessible. Billy Williams was the batting coach. I was amused how he would always grab a bat and work on his golf swing.
Just learned of Sutter's passing. As he demonstrates, he was a tough competitor on the diamond, but gracious even in defeat when things didn't go his way. The Sandberg Game wouldn't be half as good if not for the fact that Sutter had a legendary status as an untouchable closer. Nothing but respect for this all time great closing pitcher
Pappy Sandberg with his grandkids was the best part. The game was great, his career was great, the Cardinals were so good, but sharing a life time highlight with little boys who look up to you so much... You just can't beat that.
it's truly what life is all about. that cycle of unconditional love passed down and passed down. Even to me, just some hillbilly hick who grew up in a small town outside of Lexington, Kentucky and would watch WGN channel 5 games and loves and respects Ryne Sandberg so much because of the Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Greg Maddux, Steve Buechele (etc) days. But to the youngsters, he's just good ol Pappy, wondering why a stadium full of people loved him.
i grew up in a small town outside of Lexington, Kentucky and would watch WGN channel 5 games. i grew to love and respect Ryne Sandberg so much because of the Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Greg Maddux, Steve Buechele, Jose Vizcaino, Hector Villanueva days, and Harry Caray calling the games in the early 90s. i always remained a Cubs fan and couldn't believe i finally witnessed them winning it all in '16. This was so very well made. Thank you for this.
Who would be crazy enough to downvote this wonderful production? I loved every minute of it. RUclips is such a blessing for sports fans. It allows us to replay on demand all the classics.
I wasn't a cubs fan...but I definitely was a Sandberg fan as a young kid. You had to respect Dawson, Grace and Sandberg. I actually got a warmup ball thrown to me by Ryan at a Braves game...I was hollering for him and cheering while he and Mark were tossing warmup balls and when they were done he threw it up to me in the stands. It was an awesome day and I'll never forget it!
Back when baseball was still a great sport. Those Cubs/Cardinals games were always fun to watch. I loved Ryne Sandberg so much that I named my kid after him. Seriously. Nothing but respect for Bruce Sutter. That guy is a warrior and a legend. Those were two great baseball teams. They played the game the way it was meant to be played. Not like today where everyone things they need to hit a home run. It was solid all-around baseball. I miss those days.
I say this entirely without sarcasm: I'd love to hear Sandberg talk about why he peaked at 29-32 when so many players are in significant decline by then--how did he stay healthy, playing nearly every game? How did he put up 40% of his career value in just those 4 seasons? The questions that are never asked of the greats, really.
Sandberg is what brought me to the Cubbies. I can't thank him enough for all of the influence and enjoyment he brought me in all those Cubs games I watched on WGN in the 80s. Thank you, Ryne.
Me 2. I grew up in Alaska and WGN Chicago was one of the channels we got on the old scrambler. I got every kid that played baseball or sports within a 10 mile radius to be a cubs fan
Been a Cubs fan since I was 5 in 1984 and Ryne was my first and always has been my favorite player of all time. One of the most deserving Hall of Famers there has ever been in my opinion. One of the first 40/40 guys. Kids today do what that is.
Sandberg is so underrated, overlooked even though he's a HOFer. So unlike today's players, he played great defense, he could run, and he could hit. And he was such a smooth, consistent hitter. Hardly ever struck out. Not too many other choices, in my mind, for best ever second baseman.
@@73honda350 I suppose so. Some guys are no-doubters some seem to squeak in. But if you lived in Chicago you wouldn't think Sandberg was unappreciated. For a while there, I thought the Cub fans were going to have him run for Mayor.
Whoever produced this video deserves an award of some kind. How fortunate that this game took place in 1984, when the importance of saving recordings had begun to be recognized. (If this game had happened in 1974, the tapes would have been erased the next day.) All the little side stories are brought in at exactly the right moments - the Cardinals starter who had 2 career starts and 44 innings total. I had forgotten that Sutter started out as a Cub. Mixing the TV and radio calls so expertly. And then you have Sandberg answering his grandson's questions, like pointing to a random fan in the stands and asking "Why is he so happy?" The only thing overlooked was that "God's umpire", Doug Harvey, worked the plate. Nobody mentioned that, which is probably how he would have wanted it.
That's a good point about erasing the tapes - really sucks for players from those generations who had ten-year careers but only a grainy VHS highlight or two to show for it, as far as being able to show your grandkids etc.
Solid stuff about Harvey, and you are spot on about the production and editing. Come on man, how do you not get a little chill by this: "But pappy, why do they call it the Sandberg game?" ... LOOK OUT, THERE IT IS, DEEP TO LEFT FIELD, THIS GAME IS TIED....... That is what baseball is all about. Sandberg telling it as we men, we Chicago men, have all lived it in our hearts decades ago. I well remember daydreaming in a Northside elementary school classroom, on the playground, laying in bed, wherever, it didn't matter, that I was at the plate in Wrigley, some 6.4" stud on the mound, bottom 9, bases juiced and we (THE CUBS) are down by 3.................. Do I need to tell you the rest, doubt it. I would do the rush of air from my throat to simulate crowd noise, and of course I'd do the announcer HEY HEY as my game winner bounced onto Waveland. God I loved those days. Are they gone? Somehow they just don't seem quite the same. I don't think it's because I am older, since my dad was my age when Sandberg broke the Sutter code and dad sure loved it. I don't know man, just don't seem the same.

Seems like the Cubs were on every afternoon when I was a kid. It was the only team that was broadcast nationally and that made us all Cub fans. At age 8-12 is drove me to be the best Little Leaguer I could be and forever a baseball fan! RIP Harry Caray.
Yes he is a fine person and a role model for the young fans . I remember spring training in Mesa one year . Ryne had a whole slew of kids gathered around him . He was talking and joking with them . He stood for photos and signed what ever they wanted . Now that was a batch of happy kids .
Same here. This is the first and only season I either watched or listened to every Cubs game for the entire season, and was so heartbroken when they lost to the Padres after taking a 2 game lead at home.
This game was the first time I went to Wrigley and the first game my dad had ever seen live! We drove from Grand Rapids, Michigan to see it. You can imagine the memories!
Right on. Ryno & Dale Murphy were my favorite hitters as a kid. Would always watch the Cubs on WGN & the Braves on WTBS. The only 2 teams you could actually watch every game they played.
I remember that game as if it were yesterday. I was 29 and lived in a tiny apartment on Halsted. I watched every second on TV. That summer was just magical, even more than 2016 because it was so unexpected.
I was there that day. Our university had a bunch of Cubs and Cardinals fans, so that was our annual day to sit it the right center field bleachers with friends and talk trash with each other. Needless to say, it was a terrific day for that. I'll never forget it.
@@AlmostReady504 As a kid growing up in Pittsburgh during the 80's there wasn't much to cheer when it came to the Pirates but thankfully our cable provider carried WGN, WWOR, TBS
I am a 4th Generation DieHard Cub Fan, and I was totally ecstatic when the Cubs acquired Ryno. I knew he was something special before he even came to the Cubs. #23 has been my #1 favorite all of my life. .. And this video. . .wow. . .I relived every moment of this game. . goosebumps 36 years later. . . .Thank you!!!!!!
This documentary gave me chills and made me feel 37 years younger!! I loved Ryne Sandberg so much back then. I bought one of his baseball cards for my newborn son. We still have it too!! So happy Marquee Network hired him for this 2021 season.
i didn't know Marquee did that. that makes me really happy. i'm a 37 year old Kentuckian who fell in love watching Ryne, Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Steve Buechele, Vizcaino, Hector Villanueva, and Harry Caray calling the games in the early 90s. watching this brought so much joy. you hang onto that Ryne Sandberg rookie card now!
Ryne Sandberg is one of my favorite baseball player and 2nd base is my favorite position. I played second base in Gering Organization Baseball in 1996 through 1998.
My dad was a lifelong Cubs fan, and I inherited that gene. He was disabled and mostly blind, but he never missed a Cubs game on WGN. He was able to catch this game, but died the next year. My first thought when the Cubs won the World Series was of him - "Wish you could have seen this, Dad."
13:58 "Don't make the first out, and don't make the last out"--Gary Matthews. I love all the little bits of baseball strategy sprinkled throughout this video.
wasn't on WGN-TV...1984 was the first year NBC held exclusive rights for TV broadcasts of the Game of the Week - which is why Harry Caray was on the radio with Milo Hamilton that day. This was actually the first Cubs home game to NOT be televised on WGN since I believe 1947.
Bravo to the Cubs for making a 37 year old life long Mets fan care so much about some 1980s regular season throw away game between the Cubs and Cardinals into must see content. I was glued to the screen. Love the interviews of the players involved too. Very cool. They all seem like good people too. Loved this story man. Also Bruce Sutter rocks ! Dudes a total Chad. 😂. I'm a pick the dude up today for my dimond dynasty team lol. I actually already had sandburg that's why I even watched this 😂 lol .
I was 12 years old and watching this game live from my hometown in Northern Ontario, Canada and it's still one of my favourite baseball moments. What Bob Costas said is right, today you can see any game at any time but back then the game of the week was a big deal. I'm glad it happened on that Ssturday afternoon!
That really wasn't true in 1984. Cable was pretty common in cities; I'm not sure if satellite dishes were around that early. But if you had cable, you could watch almost every Cubs (WGN) and/or Braves (WTBS) game all season long. I think most major markets had local broadcasts as well.
Helluva game! Sutter and Smith, closers working multiple innings. Common back them but unbelievable in today's game. It was an amazing feeling for us Cub fans that day, beating those hated Cardinals.
He is from my home town of Spokane and I remember love watching him play growing up. Spokane know has Gonzaga Basketball but growing up we had this man.☝☝
The Great Game , The American Game ⚾! Bob Costas the best vocal historian for this great game. Loved him on Ken Burn's BASEBALL. Love hearing him on the game of the Week. The man is a walking Baseball Wikipedia of fact's, stories, history, and subtleties of player back stories, customes, and out of the blue oddities!!
Loved this special. As a baseball enthusiast, not only do big players have games as iconic as this one on the national stage, big players (Sandberg, McGee) were big, and the little guys (Dave Owen) became local heroes!! One of the better specials I have ever seen!!! ALL HAIL BASEBALL or as Harry Caray quotes ‘Holy Cow it’s gotta be…it’s gonna be…GONE!!’
I was in my tweens when this game took place. To this day, Sandberg is my biggest crush in sports. My heart still skips a little beat when I see him. I'm pushing 50 now, and he'll always be my first love. 💙💗
i'm sitting here looking at Cubs rosters from the early 90s. names i would hear Harry Caray say so many times. the nostalgia is enough to nearly make me weep.
This is a beautifully done documentary. I didn't watch that game because I was probably playing a game of my own, but this was definitely my era. And, a relatively young Harry Caray just evokes for me Skip Caray - the greatest commentator of all time, in my opinion. What an unspeakable joy it must have been to be at this game!
I was an 8 year old Cardinal fan watching this game. It was such a fantastic game, and one of the few regular season games I remember from the 80's. Sandberg was incredible that day. The Cardinals played really well, but could just not get him out to save their lives.
My parents watched him when he was at AAA OKC in '81, and were at a game the night I was born. So, naturally, when he was traded to the Cubs, we followed him there. He was my baseball idol growing up, and I have been a Cubs fan ever since then.
Sarge!!! The red baron!! Ryno!! On and on. I was 19 in 1984. The most fun I ever had watching my beloved Cubbies. Look up in the first inning and Dernier is on first or second and Ryno is at the plate. Sarge is on deck. Moreland in the hole.
I was about 7 years old living in St.Louis watching this game and became a Cubs fan and a Sandberg fan. I ended up playing 2nd base when all my friends wanted to be like Ozzie Smith. I still have my Sandberg jersey that I wore to many Cardinals/Cubs games. Ryno would never sign autographs away from Wrigley Field, but I got a LOT of other Cubs signatures.
Thank God for 2016. It makes all our history so much more enjoyable. Also I have to admit, those mid 80s Cardinals teams were super fun. So much speed and top tier defense.
Amazing production and story telling on this piece. As someone who watch WGN in Atlanta for years as an 80’s kid, I genuinely loved watching this. Viva Sandberg!
Wow. I looked up to him as a baseball player when I was young. I had to have the same number, same position and the same batting stance as him. Huge fan from Minnesota. Sandberg!!!!!
Sandberg had a monster game and kept bringing the crowd to there feet. Great day to be a Cubs fan. There were so many great moments in this game. The crowd is why Im a life long Cubs fan not from Chicago. One of the greatest games ever to me. Ozzie and Willie really keep them in the game. The back and forth lead changes is what its like to be a Cubs fan. Always seems like a roller coaster of emotions before the win. It was really cool to here the backstory by the players and all involved. Made for an awesome viewing experience. Greatest trade ever. He really did belong there in baseball and with the Cubs. Was fun to watch. Great video
The magic of baseball .....when all the stars in the universe all align and a window of opportunity just opens enough and you deliver the skills ..... Thank you Ryne Sandberg for the show !!
I have a Ryan Sandberg rookie card plus many more rookie cards. I hope to pass them on to my grandchildren. I would never sell them. They belong to the younger generations. So these legends will never die.

This game was the first time I went to Wrigley and the first game my dad had ever seen live! We drove from Grand Rapids, Michigan to see it. You can imagine the memories!
A player all current and future players should model themselves after, a class act.
ABSOLUTELY
Everyone one of those guys were highly honorable in their commentary. That was great
Right on. Ryno & Dale Murphy were my favorite hitters as a kid. Would always watch the Cubs on WGN & the Braves on WTBS. The only 2 teams you could actually watch every game they played.
5:37 Hello Boys!!!! Let’s Go Cardinals!!! #WhiteyBall ⚾️ 🏃🏾 💨
f.c, manchester united.....thank you for proving that you are a virgin
I remember that game as if it were yesterday. I was 29 and lived in a tiny apartment on Halsted. I watched every second on TV. That summer was just magical, even more than 2016 because it was so unexpected.
I was there that day. Our university had a bunch of Cubs and Cardinals fans, so that was our annual day to sit it the right center field bleachers with friends and talk trash with each other. Needless to say, it was a terrific day for that. I'll never forget it.
Now THATS something to tell your grandchildren about. You hear that saying all the time but this guy is really living it out.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan at a Cubs fantasy baseball camp in Arizona about 17 years ago, terrific fellow and great baseball player.
I was 6 years old when I watched this game with my family. I have been a Ryan Sandburg and a Cubs fans ever since. Thank you Ryno!
*RYNE SANDBERG
Ryno😂😂😂
aint a fan if you cant spell his name bro. GTFO
I was 9 yrs old. One of the greatest days of my life....
The greatest game I ever watched until game 6 of the 2011 World Series.
I’m a cards fan but this was one of the best documentary on RUclips I’ve ever seen
Absolutely. I became a Cubs fan because of WGN cable TV in the 80s.
Their rivalry was great for the game of baseball wasn't it?
@@AlmostReady504 As a kid growing up in Pittsburgh during the 80's there wasn't much to cheer when it came to the Pirates but thankfully our cable provider carried WGN, WWOR, TBS
There are very memorable games during that era between those two teams
Ryno the original number 23. What a class act.
I used to love watching WGN Cubs games. Too bad Manfred is molding the game into something else (that’s not better).
This was like Auburn vs alabama in college football type of rivalry
Man that gives me chills! Sandberg is and will always be the greatest cub of all time!
... not named Ernie Banks.
I remember this game like it was yesterday! I’ve been a diehard Cubs fan since 1980 and was ultra elated!! 😀😀
@@BootsORiley How can you list players from the early 90's Cubs and not mention Greg Maddux.
@@fuktrumpanzeeskum I did leave out ol Gregory, didn’t I.
This was really well done. I remember the following Monday at school it seemed everybody wanted to play second and be Ryne Sandberg.
Fact!!! RYNO!!!
I remember all those guys. Jesus, watching this brought tears to my eyes. Those were wonderful days. Thank you for posting this
Sandberg is my favorite Cub. Rizzo is a close second.
Rizzo ain't done yet !!!
Hazelwood. Nice last name. Only 300 of us on the planet...anyway, what about Kerry Wood?
My favorite cubs player is baéz
My favorite was Dave Kingman
Gary woods was h.o.f. caliber
I honestly knew nothing about this game before now, but what a privilege to see this! Pure magic!!
I was 16 and watched this game with my dad. Still the best baseball game I have ever seen and a great memory with my father.
He was so freaking good, I grew up in Louisiana and we had WGN so we could watch all the Cubs games.
And they say kids can't pay attention to baseball. Good stuff Pappy
What an opportunity for Dave Owen. He delivered.
In my late 40's. Lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. I have nothing but respect for Sandburg, great player!!
The coolest part of this video was Sandburg with his grandkids.
As a Cubs fan I enjoyed seeing this game live on WGN.
So great. So well done.
wasn't on WGN-TV...1984 was the first year NBC held exclusive rights for TV broadcasts of the Game of the Week - which is why Harry Caray was on the radio with Milo Hamilton that day. This was actually the first Cubs home game to NOT be televised on WGN since I believe 1947.
@@shadytnu24 nbc had the game of the week since the 50s. There were previous cub games on NBC not aired on WGN before this
Great info at 23:00! Arguably changed Ryno's career from a "line drive hitter" to someone that hit for power.
I'm 35 and he is my all time favorite
Sandberg is my fav player EVER!!! I would use his batting stance when i played baseball, made the allstar team 9 yrs in a row!😀
One of the best cubs vids
Extra innings means an extra, extra loaded Harry Carry.
Haha! So true
Hearing his voice made me smile.
Two cases of ice cold Budweiser!
He was the last of the old school play by play guys. He’d be sloshed by the 7th inning but would deliver every home game with that song.
extra hydrated sir
This just makes me so happy to watch! I became a Cubs fan in 4th-5th grades at the same time Ryno joined, so he's been my guy since the start!
Same here. I am 46 now. I remember everything about this game.
LOL! Mine was Grace.
@@Mikki44 Amazin' Grace! 🤣 Loved that man, too!
I became a CUBS fan till this day and for the rest of my life I will be a CUBS fan . Go Cubs Go!!!
as a yankees fan i say thank you to the cubs for posting this video...
Thank you for your respect Go Cubbies.
you're pure class, Justin. respect.
This brings a tear to my eye, my Dad's favorite team! The Chicago Cubs. RIP Dad!
That was an incredible game! This video brought back so many memories-so many familiar names of Cubs players I watched as a kid.
i'm sitting here looking at Cubs rosters from the early 90s. names i would hear Harry Caray say so many times. the nostalgia is enough to nearly make me weep.
Thank you for the memories Mr. Sandberg.
Fantastic production! Lifelong Cubs fan from Michigan! Growing up in the 80's I always watched my Cubbies on WGN 9 on cable.
All I watched growing up was Cubs ball since they had their own tv channel. Dawson, Dunston, Grace, Sandberg. This is great.
I cannot watch this without my bottom lip fluttering and tears coming down.
I went to High School with Ryne. He was more noted for being our star QB than for baseball.
You grew up in Spokane Washington what’s up John Stockton from Spokane Washington to man spoke can’t really have some good players
@You Done Messed Up And don’t come off Sounding educated and part of the elite because that’s not what I was trying to convey
@@jamessveinsson6006 what in the world were you even trying to say lol
What a game, What a team, and What a ball player!! Ryne Sandberg will forever be one of my all time favorites to have ever watched play the game!
Thanks for the birthday present guys! Its awesome!
WGN was Chicago WTBS was Atlanta’s Super Station
Wow. I looked up to him as a baseball player when I was young. I had to have the same number, same position and the same batting stance as him. Huge fan from Minnesota. Sandberg!!!!!
Hoowee, that daily double was something. Go Cubs!
Your Ryan Sandberg card is a fake then because his name is Ryne Sandberg
"My grandchildren know me as Papi. But little by little, they're starting to know me as Ryne Sandberg." Oh man what a great line to start off with.
Sent chills down my spine
This comment is underrated !
I just love when super athletes are soft spoken and humble. I just love it.
@@firpomaan5544 "There's papi being happy". Kids are great.
Thank you so much for this. I'm at work chocking back tears. Remembering when Chicago was great and baseball was played by men.
ive been a baseball fan since 1987 and i never knew about this game until today! that was cool to watch thanks for the upload..
Ryno We All Going Bananas Holy Cow Cubs Win Watching This Game with Great Emotions Thank You For Giving Us So Much Joy And Representing Us In Such A Major Way MVP ....Go Cubbies!
