@@AR_420- Please watch this again, that CZ 457 is for real, listen to what his grouping were. It may be a tad more $ wise but in the long run it is a rifle to be passed down, not thrown away. Watched a lot of vids comparing these 2 so I knew the .22 would have more power but it seems overall due to bullet design the .17hmr is a bit more accurate . I prefer .22mag overall because you can also run it in a pistol.
I believe 17 hmr is only available in 17 grains, unfortunately. My mistake, upon further research I have found they do in fact offer two other weight options. 15 and 20.
17 HMR for crows and rabbits out to 150 yards. Foxes head shot only out to 75yards. 22 WMR for crows and rabbits out to 125 yards and head shot only foxes to 100 yards. The 22 WMR hits with more effect as it has a higher impact number of bullet weight multiplied by bullet impact energy than the 17 HMR at all ranges. I would like to see you measure the enclosed volume that each bullet makes when hitting a clay block. You would need a bigger or deeper clay block to capture the 22 WMR bullet according to the results from this video. I know that the bullets with more momentum disrupt more tissue than bullets with lower momentum, but it would be nice to "quantify" the results to discover how much better these high moments bullets behave. Bigger animals generally require higher momentum to kill them quickly therefore humanely. Nice video. I think keeping it simple teaches us more as we are not overwhelmed with too many details.
The fact that the 17HMR did NOT exit the clay made me stop and think for a minute... I have an abundance of coyotes in my area, they were really cuttin' up tonight, so I wonder what your opinion might be about using the 17 HMR for coyotes and minimizing any collateral damage to any of my farm critters... Thanks
17hmr with a 17gr bullet will not kill deer or coyote.... 17 hmr with a 20gr. Xtp hornady will kill ... But not like a 22mag... with a Browning or Winchester bullet
The 22WMR has more overall versatility. The 17HMR is more specialized for gophers, prairie dogs, and such. The 17 is safer where ricochet hazard might be a problem around livestock, homes, etc. Enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing!

You need to try the 20gr Game Point by CCI in 17HMR vs a 40gr Hollow Point in 22WMR, they will be the most similar in terms of terminal performance they're both designed to expand and penetrate where as most 17s are designed to go pop!

First time I ever used a mouth blown predator call, brought in a red fox. Fox was facing me @ 20yds when that 40gr hollow point struck his throat & turned him a complete flip! Also took 2 coyotes with 22mag.
Well they both performed as designed, the 22WMR uses a heavier bullet construction and is probably the perfect 100 yard Coyote rifle and the 17HMR is designed to take the heads off small critters like Rabbits, Squirrels and Prairie Dogs. But both are deadly 😮
Ohhhh, GREAT topic/timing! When I 'Retired' my EDC, Ruger P85 (9mm for those who don't know), for the Ruger 57, ALL my neighbors thought I'd lost my mind. Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy. This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR. This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.
Be a good video even though my mind is made up, i have hit small game with a 22mag myself and seen a friend hit the same game with his HMR and the 22mag is more effective. The 17hmr is not as forgiving but still does the job, in the end each to thier own.
I have a .22WMR, so not getting the 17HMR. If I were starting anew, ammo availability and cost were be deciders, as well as ease of maintenence. 22 mag for coyotes, 17 hmr for squirrels, and both for a fun day plinking with the family. Each cartridges have a valid purpose but both are just a lot fun.
Depending on what you are wanting out of any bullet you are firing. Look at this, the 17hmr used 100% of it energy in that block. Sometimes that’s what you want.
That was definitely a win for the .22 mag in my book. The entire .22 block was pushed outward compared to the .17 block. It looked like the internal cavity was larger overall with the .22 as well, but may have just been camera angle.

Love both for different reasons. Watched my uncle take an 8 point with the 22 mag.
Great comparison, and now that we know that the 22 magnum will penetrate deeper, I knew it would, and I regret ever selling my 22mag, how’s about you do the same with the 22, but/and you put a couple water/milk jugs behind the clay to catch the boolot.
Thanks for another great video Adam
❤️ from Canada
I like the catch idea.
22 magnum has to much energy versus the 17 hmr, 22 mag wins
Would the 17 set off tannerite? Seem fast enough, does the frontal area make a difference?
About half the time it'll set it off in my experience.
My favorite!!! Clay Blocks!!!
Never shot 17hmr, but i have 22mag. I figured with 17hmr traveling faster it would have made it through.
Both are good varmint rds but i like heavier
The CZ Rifle is awesome! I am sure that contributes to it’s power!
I like them both. I'm curious to see what the 17 wsm would do compared to the 22 mag
22 WMR is the bomb! Thanks for your vids!
Thanks for comparing comparable ammo on this video! 22 rem mag is still king! Imo.
I chose 22WMR precisely because of this!
That 22wmr took out that rascal rabbit 😂
ive seen both kill deer but the 22mag is my pick overall
Thanks for the info. I already have a 22 mag. Know I don't really see the need for the 17. Thanks again
I like both i lean more towards 17hmr
Always love 22 - anything. Ingrained from my childhood. Lol
I prefer 22mag my self loved this video my man blowing shit up again dude
As far as a favorite I'd have to pick the 1 I own.. I bet you've already done a video on the different damage done to the clay blocks from the 17 hmr but you've peaked my interest because not only does it matter how accurate but it also matters as to how well the perform once they reach their target.
I don't think I have any of the Remington stuff I'll have to look and then it not see if I can find some
I have both, but I think I like the 22WMR more so than the 17HMR. I guess it is because I like the large calibure rounds, lol. Thanks for sharing.
Anyone else think it would be a great video if there was a pound of Tannerite hidden in a random clay block?
Boom
Never did like the 17
But I do need a 22 mag rifle
Love your videos man
Appreciate you watching
@@WHOTEEWHO you make great videos
Thanks for another cool video. If you ever run across a 17 wsm you should grab it Fastest and most powerful rimfire made.
i own both but grab the 17 most.
17hmr is for me when it comes to hurting.
As a man who owns multiple .22s .22l .22lr and .17hmr.
The .22mag wins in knockdown power within 100 yards.
Try the 17wsm, it's a little more impressive than the Hmr.
Would love to see a 17 hmr vs 17wsm in clay
Love them all plus you can carry a lot of ammo if needed to
The chrono wasn’t accurate for the 22 mag. They are only slightly slower than a .17.
Could you do a larger clay block and dissect the block to find the bullet (or what's left of it) to show us what it looks like?
That was definitely a win for the .22 mag in my book. The entire .22 block was pushed outward compared to the .17 block. It looked like the internal cavity was larger overall with the .22 as well, but may have just been camera angle.
