He was named after his father, John Lewis Nelson, who performed under the stage name "Prince Rogers." Music was in his blood, with his father being a jazz pianist and songwriter and his mother, Mattie Della Shaw, a jazz singer. Growing up in a musically inclined household, Prince was surrounded by the sounds of jazz, R&B, and soul from an early age. He showed prodigious talent, learning to play the piano at just seven years old, and soon after, mastering the guitar and drums.
