  • In today's episode I invite you to draw or paint along with me! We will be creating a master study of a Frans Hals painting.
A master study is NOT a master copy. It is a learning exercise with an oil painting (or drawing) as an end result.
This is NOT a history lesson, or a "how to paint like Frans Hals" video. This is 100% about painting and some stories. Enjoy!

I love your master copies. It's so incredible to watch you breaking down the way a classic painting was done. You're truly a wonderful artist and I can't get enough of your demos. Bravo and thank you !

I've enjoyed your series of "master painting" paintings and was the most weirded out by the Carravagio portrait with the very steep angle. This series is so interesting to watch--BUT it makes me want to own an elegant picture book of the paintings of each of these artists or to go museum hopping! Your teaching style is calm, funny and encouraging. You are particularly on a hilarious roll while doing this lovely painting. Don't know how you paint and talk or chat at the same time, but is a pleasure to watch.

great job .about the ruff, I think Hals worked the other way round, I think he first layed on a dark colour and then he modelled the ruff in lighter paint.

Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge. The eyelids droop down a bit more than yours I think. To get likeness one almost has to do caricature of features.
