      Hi Sara. Wow, you're from Egypt. ☺️ A country in my bucket list of must visit. Thanks for recognizing all my efforts and for the kind words. Appreciation such as yours fuel me in doing these reviews and stuff. I was also once like you researching on RUclips, and when i realized i have collected some paints, i told myself, why not do the job of being the reference. So here we are now.. I'm happy doing this and I'm even happier that somehow, I'm able to help other in their quest of paints and materials that match their needs. 🙏🏻☺️🎨

    I really appreciate you being honest about these mungyo colors. They don't look like professional watercolor.they look like ink or colors enhanced with optical brightness

      Thank you. 😊 although I love generally the saturation of the paints, they fail to be reliable on the thing most important to me, the pigment selection.

  • @pantalonious3984

    I grabbed this set for $15 before realized all the pigments were SO fugitive! I’ll still use it for practice and in my sketchbooks to save my pricier pigments and be just as happy with it. For the price I paid, The box itself is worth that much !

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  2 года назад +2

      Yes, that's true. This set delivers the vibrant colors atleast.. and the tin is good. 👍

    • @urbangypsy69
      @urbangypsy69 Год назад +1

      Even DS and Dv use these pigments in some paints. At least DV reveals that they are “moderately” lightfast w/a rating of two. I love Moonglow but have relegated it to my sketchbooks. I could UV spray and put paintings behind UV protectant glass. But, I do illustrates mostly at present.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Год назад +3

      Yeah, even professional grades include some fugitive pigments. But they have atleast other alternative that aren't fugitive and they wont normally put fugitive pigments in basic sets. What's disappointing in this mungyo set is that all their yellows and reds aren't lightfast. So even if these paints look good, i could only recommend them for sketchbooks or for works to be scanned..

    I eyed this set few years ago, when I was still starting watercolor but got the Sonnet 24 instead, it comes in full pans and cheaper than mungyo, though a student grade paint.. Thank you for this review Allan, now we can tell that Mungyo is not comparable to most professional paints.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +8

      Sonnet is also really good. Actually, Mungyo by performance and vibrancy can compete with the other professional paints.. But when we see the technical side, that is where it fails.. and im a little sad that some fans of Mungyo dont understand my stand. anyway,Thank you for sharing, Angel. :)

    i have their 48 pan set that I bought 2 years ago, tho the set i got ended up having 2 pans of the same color which is kinda a downer.. i really like the set's color intensity and overall feel to them, my only downside is that the colors doesn't "bloom" or move that much. thanks for the review, before i bought the set i did watch other videos but yours is the only one that really went into details about the set's pigment choices and color names. even tho im just a hobbyist those are some nice info worth knowing

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +1

      Here's what i found about most Asian paints.. they dont move alot. It is not the biggest issue for me since i like to handle their movement, but it's an issue to many artists. Thank you for appreciating my efforts here.. watching reviews before buying is satisfying, and i know my videos may sometimes disappoint because of the info i give, but i think that is the main purpose of reviews.. to show sides A and B and more. Mungyo for me are nice and vibrant and are quite affordable. We just need to be a little more cautious in case we use it professionally or in display works. 😉🎨🙏🏻

    I love the way these paints work. I have Gansai Tambi through w&N, mission gold, etc etc and to Daniel Smith, and these are amazing. They will always hold a place in my heart for sure. I don’t use them for work that would need to be lightfast (just in case) but some of the colors in the 48 are just beautiful. And they are now available open stock. Love these paints, they wet and move so nicely, and the price is so good.
    Enjoyed your review, thank you so much! Great video! I’m so glad I’ve erred on the side of caution with these! I really love them, but agree they shouldn’t be labeled as professional.

Excited na ako. 😊 Isa lang din yung seller sa Shopee. Balitaan kita about sa 48 colors. If you're inlove with the sets of Prima, you'll have to collect all 12.hehe. i intentionally dont rewet all my pans set on reviews prior swatching to see which ones rewet instantly. And in that case, prima is an instant. I can imagine what more it does if you spray water. You'd probably get more paints. Ingats sa violet niya, sobrang strong. Haha. Using ultramarine PB29 and calling it cobalt blue PB28 seems to be a very standard move among student grade sets. I see it in my cotmans and van goghs. Money saving and safety (cobalt toxic). Move to the professional lines (w&n pro, rembrandt) for the real thing in cobalt -- as well as cerulean.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Год назад

      Yes, that's how they do it. Obviously, theyve avoided using cobalts and cadmiums to cut price. Although there are some professional grades that avoided Cadmiums, Daniel Smith for example, i still do not count this Mungyo set as professional grade for the reason there there are almost very few reliable and lightfast pigment option for their colors especially in reds and yellows.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  3 года назад +2

      Hi, Amber. When I say move, i literally mean it. ☺️ It pertains to the how the paint runs or moves when dropped on a wet surface or a layer of paint application. This property is unique to watercolors because they're waterbased so paint particles can 'move' or run very evidently, unlike in more "solid" media like oil paints and acrylic. ☺️

    hello. I think that brand just do a lot of mistakes in labeles. In your case it’s a wrong pigment for Ultramarine which is not Ultramatine. I got the pastel set of 12 half pans to try out (it was twice cheaper than Schminke Academia which is student’s grade paints) and on one of the lable they just had Cadmium Yellow Right instead of Light =) I also warried about lightfastness but decided to use them in the sketchbook exclusively. What’s wild is the paints look nothing like the larger set which look like Prima. Also, why do manufacturers use PR 122? 😂Take a look at beloved Moonglow from DS? In no time in even gentle sun…the blue and green are left in this ghostly sort of mix. Thx so much for your reviews! I love that regardless of who/what…you always give us a great small painting!

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Год назад

      I find it confusing that this brand is proud of the pigments used in their line despite that most aren't really reliable. But atleast theyre honest. Regarding PR122, some variants are lightfast. That's why Bruce of handlrint.com had to include it to the Top 40 pigments. The hue is unique, and even the coolest PV19 can hardly get close. However, i still am not including pr122 in my palette to be safer. If i had to use pr122, it has to be in mass tone unless on sketchbook. Thank you for watching the videos, and I am glad that you appreciate the sample paintings. 🙏

      Watercolors by Allan Jay Quesada they are having to restock as they’ve sold out of certain colours. Will warn you they only come in 15ml tubes so each tube is approx £12+ so definitely check Jackson’s if you’re after some. Schmincke has definitely stepped up. I think there’s 15 new granulating colours to choose from 🤗

      @@bluedeva thanks for the info. The price for their 15ml is comparable to Daniel Smith, so i think it's still reasonable. Here jn the Philippines, the 5ml of Schmincke costs 8-10lbs. But if there are 15 new Colors, i might have to only choose a few because there's a limit for tax free customs item nin Philippines.. sad, but I just need to divide every purchase to 9,999php max. 😔 Thanks for sharing the tips bluedeva. • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  8 месяцев назад

      Hi. recommendations may vary depending on where you're coming from cause prices adjust depending on location. But generally, i think one of the most reasonably priced professional grade paints is White Nights. The 12 color set (full pans) is almost same price as Mungyo 24 halfpans. If you're from Asia, another option is Holbein. But please take note that aside from the brand, please be very observant of the pigments used. For example, even the best brands linke daniel smith still carry thr genuine Alizarin Crison usinb pigment PR83 which is fugitive (will fade). This is because some artists care less about lightfastness, and prioritise the color they prefer.

  • @sachiaiko
    @sachiaiko 4 года назад +5

    I have a couple questions.... what's a fugitive color?
    1 am super New to watercolors, and working on doing basic illustrations for a children's book for sick kids. I'm deciding on a reasonable students set of aeteza triangle watercolor pencils and I need to decide on a pallet that is reasonably priced for wuality. I am in us but I am disabled which means I live on about 1/5th what it actually requires to live. So money is precious.
    I found u and I fell In love u with imediately. I love ur technique in giving advice with a sample painting and u have a new subscriber. I really hope u can help.me find the right pallet and if u think arteza 48 colors for 19$ isn't good please let me know. I would be getting a deal for two hug watercolor books with them .... I'm afraid to take the plunge without some support :-) pleeeaaase!!
    Blessings and peace stay stafe stay healthy he'll stay home when possible. HUGS

      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +5

      Hi Sachiako. Thank you for the love and welcome to my channel. 🎨🤗
      A fugitive pigment means it is not lightfast/not light resistant. Meaning, it will fade overtime if exposed to light.
      With regards to your book, first, id like to share with your happiness and anticipation, because im also currently working on one. For the book, im sure the paintings are gonna be scanned so you don't actually need paints that are super lightfast, unless you plan on selling the paintings or hanging them one day.. in that case, id suggest you to get a higher quality set of paints. With regards to Arteza, im afraid to gjve any opinions about it cause i haven't tried it yet. But basing on some friends' expereince and some reviews of mh trusted co-artists here on YT, i think Arteza isn't the best for a book project. Colors seemed to be pale and pastel. Also, I believe you dont really need a 48 colors set for it may only overwhelm you or confuse you. The best basic professional grade set id recommend is the Daniel Smith Essentials set. 6 colors 5ml tubes for around 30usd on Amazon. I also have a review on theat set and have shown the mixing possibilities of the set. If you want a more affordable set wihtg more colors, you may checkout a range of sets of Cotman Watercolors in pans. I believe a 14 color set costs only around 15usd. But if you can get a tubes set, it's better for the quantity and the quality at it doesn't need rewetting. Let me know more about the specific needs.nwould be happy to help.
      Stay healthy and inspired. Keep safe. 🙏🏻😉🎨

      Alan, u responded to me so quickly oh my goodness! Uv a very very kind heart. Is there a way to reach out to u that is more private cause I tend to overshare lol. Either way is fine.
      So I was thinking about the arteza PENCIL watercolors because it'll give me a bit more control plus I can pay for it over a few months. It's a gentle intro into watercolors, and wanted to add a pan set, half is fine for now, to see if I can even get this down.
      All of this is brand new to me. I've made one successful Bob Ross style watercolor painting in oil paints lol. Never been a drawer or painter.
      Everything else, yes. Jewlery, sewing recycled sweater coats, writing is my number one passion, leatherwork, I've even done stained glass I've so many creative sidess I don't have time to list it all.
      I am disabled since a kid, I'm writing a book based off a concept that helped me A LOT as a kid, which is where the paintings come in I thought I could keep it simple and sweet for kids. But I'm also doing a work book on being an advocate for ur childright beside the kids book. So those are my current focused and they live in me every day and all night if u know what I mean.

    • @sachiaiko
      @sachiaiko 4 года назад

      Oh I forgot to add that the tubes seem overwhelming to me and I am not sure I could do then. I have PTSD stuff does NOT make sense when something freaks me out it just does. So that's why I figured start with the somewhat more easy to use and move around (I fell just 2 weeks ago so simplicity of movement matters as well as usability.)
      Really I just want to learn the craft and HOPE I am good enough to do my own kid snails and fishes for my stories, then maybe I get the more spendy and scary seeming stuff. If that makes sense and I'm sure it doesn't cause it's not logical lol

You may want to add few earth colors like burnt sienna, yellow Ochre and raw umber, and a deep neutral color in the form of Payne's gray. That's already 10. If budget permits, you may also add a sap green and a phthalo green blue shade to make it standard 12. Here's my review of the Daniel Smith Essentials set. Pls watch it too. 🎨☺️

So when you see a Cotman paint being sold in Amazon or Ebay, that's the real Cotman.

      Hiii. I think youve come to the right place. Hehe. I definitely suggest you to watch this whole review of Mungyo, till the end where compare the swatches of the brands you've just mentioned. I've almost ranked them from worst to best. Among the affordable brands you have mentioned, White Nights is the only choice. As Sonnet is White Nights Student grade sister. While Mungyo, is advertised as artist grade, it fails to include reliable and lightfast pigments in its most basic sets.. particularly the yellow and rose colors.. so, i think wala ka na pong problem hehe.
