  • I find myself wondering why step thru bikes arent more popular. I continually hear stories of folks buying 26x4 fat tire ebikes and they are too big for them to ride.

It is to protect the Crown Jewels.
The design has been engineered to minimise damage- if we all went girlie and then hit a sidewalk or forgot what break was what on a girls bike- we would shoot totally impeded to the solid handlebar post up front, rendering us unable to ever have offspring of our air and possibly incompetent. Definitely will need viagra - guess that’s not so bad now since it’s readily available but still, so you can ride a GIRLS bike??
      Totally not worth it.

You didn’t hear John Wayne going:
“Ohh naw Il need to swing my leg all the way over that mules back”
      Or cries to:
“Cut a portion out of my horse so it’s easier to slip my leg over to the opposite saddle. Yes I hear you, the horse will suffer horrendous pain but it’s the 1800’s, we don’t really care!”

The stepthrough was a marketing ploy of the 1890s to catch the womens market when women wore dresses, my thought about the bar being there for men could also have been popularized so that men could have a bike that they could identify with, being something that a skirt wearer couldn't use. Any guy that has had their boys come into contact with the top bar wondered what moron came up with that design. Nowadays savy marketers promote stepthroughs to both sexes thus increasing market share.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 3 года назад +4

Not true, the step thru made sense for women because 1) women are almost always quite a bit lighter than men, and a step thru chassis is an inherently weaker design with lower weight limits all else equal and 2) women wear shorts and pants too, but lifting your leg up high and putting on a show for everyone is still considered a bit racy because men already think about sex all the time without provocation 3) having a male and female specific frame also was a size difference as frames designed for women were almost always physically smaller. Its just a bit obsolete now because they can make beefy more advanced frames that still carry a lot of weight even with that big empty V shape and women don't really care much if men watch them or even encourage it being much more sexual with public twerking and wearing extremely thin leggings on purpose and bikes often come in multiple sizes.

@@BoopSnoot Yes, yes and yes. Add to it a point made in the video. I often stack things on my rear rack such that you would have to be abnormally flexible to get your leg over. The Aventon would be ideal if they made their display more legible and ditched the thumb throttle.

Having the top bar makes the bike easier to grab and get up a few steps or to put on a bike stand or a bike carrier.
As far as getting on, I lean the biker over and it's no problem with the top tube. It also gives me one more place to carry a few things like bungee cords or small items attached with straps.
I do not think of step throughs as "girl's bikes" but more as uni-sex bikes for everyone.

The first bicycle I bought with my own money is step-through. This frame design has already saved me from some possibly nasty falls because I was able to simply step off before I would fall. Yeah, 65 YO, mobility issues, purchased the step-thru. Purchased the Aventon Adventure. Had it drop shipped to my local bike shop for assembly. Will transport it on an Ebike carrier via a receiver hitch that UHAUL is putting on my car. Can't wait to start riding. Purchased it primarily to lug camera gear thru miles and miles of bike trails in the National/State parks. If people want to be shallow and criticize me for riding a girls bike, so be it. For me, I have to take care of my back. If I were riding the bike hard on mountain trails I would have most likely chosen a step over model for better frame stability and I definitely would have chosen a rear suspension model, like maybe one of the Beecool versions. But for me, I will be casually strolling thru the parks and maybe on the beach a little as well.

I'm 5'1", waiting on my Pace 500 ST to be delivered to my local shop later this month. I barely fit on the medium, so I got the small and will put the seat up a bit. I love that there's an option for a small frame with 650b tires and step through, options you can't get with other brands at this price. A winning combo for someone like me, a shortie who's young but unfortunately has garbage joints from lupus. The only downside to not having a top tube is having less area on the bike to mount stuff. I haven't noticed any flex on the ones I test rode, and I'm a pretty thicc person, though to be fair I'm not doing any intense mountain biking.
I think time and physical necessity will change the aversion to step throughs. As people age and face increasing difficulty mounting and dismounting their bikes, and see others make the switch to step throughs, they'll reconsider their priorities and realize personal comfort & safety are more important than some outdated aesthetic macho ideal based on external affirmation.

And if you put a rear rack on it, it’s even more difficult to swing your let over it. I even did seriously consider the Step-Thru, but it was a two month longer delivery time. Oh well. My next one will absolutely be a step-thru.
Also, about the mirrors... I like bar-end mirrors too. They're certainly better than anything that mount inside the grips. But did you ever consider a digital mirror? Mine's pretty boss, cost about $65, and took about five minutes to put in. But those bikes are not very comfortable for casual riders. But still the image of those bikes will stay in people's heads. That's why I think men especially tend to first buy a diamond frame bike. Regardless of the reason, the step through makes way more sense for the typical casual rider. Most people I've observed tend to buy their bike too big. You can see them struggling when they stop.

As a child of the 80's, there was always the stereotype that step thru bikes were for girls. I actually got teased as a child for riding my sister's bike on occasion. Personally, I didn't care as long as I was having fun out riding... and I was. As I got older, that stereotype eventually went on the wayside. As for the Aventure, I'm torn between the step over (large) and step thru (M/L) versions. In comparison, both versions have the same reach length from saddle to handlebars, wheelbase length and the same head tube length. The step over allows for more standover height and saddle height. Being that I'm 300 lbs and 5' 9" in height, I can fit both bikes comfortably and I love that they can both carry up to 400 lbs. If I were to get the step over version, I would get the large frame bike in camo green. If I were to go for the step thru, I would definitely get the step thru in electric red. I've done my research into this particular bike, but for some reason, I just can't decide which version to go with. I'm just hoping that when I decide to pull the trigger, the Aventon will feel like a large bike to me.

I've got a red Aventure step through. Worried a lot how I'd look on the bike and if the frame would be strong. It's been great! Very grateful for step through when carrying cargo, but it is far less convenient to get on some car bike racks.

Guys in Europe have no problems with step through’s. To them it’s just a bike that’s easier to get on. But in the good old U.S of A it’s all about bigger is better. lifted trucks, modified muscle cars,Tattoos, and beer guts and standard step over frames.

shuckers I was 6'7" when I was 17 [awhile ago]
a few strokes n a few years later I was 63 when I bought my 1st ebike & yeah I got a step over cuz Im a MAN - I can do it, I did fine, but after a few hours I get still in the wrong places & getting on wasnt as easy.
I won a step thru & thought my wife will like this ;)
she is 5'6" and says its big. so I tried it. & wow ez on n off, nice ride, so it became my ebike
Im 63 & got short - 6'4" now so yeah im old n little, but still a man, Even on the gurls bike :)
Ive ridden it several times now & really like it.
at first I tend to forget & swing my leg up n over to mount. [yup in my go to mode & forget]
later as I tire? uh I remember its an ST & am happy to easily step thru n go.
    nobody says anything {Im sure Its just a thing in my mind}
ok my wife sezs the bike dont look so big when Im on it.
the ST feels smaller to me than my step over (its fearless) "thats the model of it
the flurry 2.0 is the ST - it even sounds like a girls name. . .
so maybe its just my perspective(?)
this old boy is the only one with the problem. (I will grow up someday) ;)

I bought a step-through bike, I agree, the step through looks way better and way easier to get on and off. I also customized my bike with a basket, bottle holder, mirror, horn/alarm system and blue tooth speaker for music :)

I Dont know but I seen some reviews where I heard the step through a maybe be a little more softer feeling. Like it flexes a bit more . Especially when riding off road , and I'll cruise the river bottoms myself aswell as our free ways . Plus I figured I can lean the bike towards myself , they're not a motorcycle .
But maybe in a few more years I'll start thinking if s step through who knows ,
But then again I know a few guys in their mud 70s who still ride their baggers so I doubt I will be I'd never here the end of it.
But then again I don't have that badass beard you have either Citizen.😄😅😄👍👍

Yeh I think it’s just backward thinking. I am only 1.65m and I have a step through on my e-bike. The only benefits of a top tube really are it adds to the bike’s stability and easier to mount on back of a car with a rack. But my e-bike is plenty stable enough and I could always get a false cross top tube if I wanted to rack it.

Personally, I've only ever ridden step-over bikes. I don't really have a problem with step-through bikes, but step-over bikes just have never been an issue for me. It may also be due to my age and health, I am a healthy 20 Y/o and many of the people advocating for step-throughs are older and/or have a disability. I think for now, I'll stick with the step-over bikes.

Manufacturers and consumers should stop calling the step through as a women’s/lady’s bike. The step through is meant for ease of hopping on the bike and that is not exclusive to women.

I’m 76 years old. I sold my Honda Goldwing and my Segway X-2 and just bought this exact same bike. I test drove one at my local dealer and the step through was so easy to get on and off of I couldn’t care less if someone calls it a girl’s bike. My comfort is more important than comments.

My plans are to paint the fenders the same Electric Red as the frame, I don’t care for the black fenders, and I’m also getting a larger seat. I put a Harley Davidson seat and a wooden barrel on my Segway and kept it when I sold the Segway, so I’m going to try it on the bike just for fun.

Honestly, my main reason for getting the crossbar was fear of frame stability, what with me being a big chonk. Otherwise I would've gone with that lovely red step-thru. Shame they don't have that red on the crossbar variant. Ended up ordering a tan bike 'cause the green or black would've taken till the end of august to ship.

Same reason I got the step over. I have health issues on top and still went with step over. I just feel a little safer on this style bike. It's really not that difficult to step over. Just lean bike in towards myself putting upper bar lower to ground and no problem. I have went over once before at a stop when I first got my bike but I've since learned what not to do to keep the bike from over powering me to the ground because it certainly can when ones not as healthy as they once was or strong like they once was.

For me, it had nothing to do with it being a girl's bike, and all to do with the rigidness of a top tube. Most top tubes these days are slanted downwards towards the sea and quite easy to swing a leg over anyways. In some cases I want to go a little off-road and having a step through gives me anxiety that the frame will flex. Perhaps it never will, but having a single bar hold all my weight seems like a big task when going over bumps. The top tube give me a little assurance that the frame will never flex.

To answer your big question, if you look at a history of bicycle design, the diamond style, or "safety" frame has been around for 100 years or so. The step through style was adopted for women riders wearing skirts. Hard to imagine today how controversial it was back then for women to ride a bike.

So true i have a Velotric Nomad 1 Bike High Step 6 weeks ago i was riding and pushed off to get the bike started in motion and lost my balance i fell to the right and hit the ground and fractured my elbow i think because of the high step bar caught my leg on the way down and slammed me into the ground if i had a step through i could have just released the handle bars and let the bike fall. I am going to change to the cyrusher do you recommend anything better that has a low step through? Thanks
