  • We speak to the people behind The Fuel Rats, a specialist community of Elite Dangerous Commanders who often risk their own safety to rescue those who find themselves stranded in the far corners of the galaxy, running out of fuel. Run out of fuel and you soon run out of Oxygen, and help is rarely nearby. That's when you need to call The Fuel Rats!
Exploration is a huge part of the appeal of Elite Dangerous, but for one intrepid explorer, curiosity very nearly got the better of him... until The Fuel Rats embarked on a daring rescue mission that took over 600 hours of flying! CMDR. Deluvian set out from the edge of the Milky way and travelled over 140 light years away before calling for help... Would the Fuel Rats get to him in time? Find out in the latest episode of Tales from the hard drive from PC Gamer

@@vanghard You do realize how long programing a story line takes and the 100's of paths it can take? It's not that they don't want or can't handle the story line, it's months of work and money. Future storylines and updates will all be feeding of the back of this storyline. The fact that they got several mentions in game on Galnet shows they are paying attention to what is going on even 8Yrs after launch. No one could have predicted "The Wych Hunt" happening.

The Fuel Rats are an amazing bunch of people. When I explain to people that there are players in an online game that will help you just out of the goodness of their heart, (instead of blowing you up and taking all your stuff); they don't believe me.

  • @57thorns
    @57thorns 2 года назад +38

I have seen notices on public transport (especially ferries) to the effect "remember that you are part of someone else's journey". That is worth remembering for multiplayer games as well. It is _never_ "just a game", that is just an abusers excuse for being abusive, you are impacting other peoples lives, and you can chose what impact you have.
But most people out there that are supportive and will selflessly help given an opportunity, even if most are not as committed as the Fuel Rats.

The Fuel Rats are TRUE HEROS and don't get the recognition they deserve. l have called on them once when l made an error in mapping my route to a star outside the bubble & they were there in no time to rescue me but that was not the first time l had run out of fuel but before learning of them l had to pick the "Self Destruct" option to get back home 3 or 4 times. Now l NEVER run without a fuel scoop & they taught me how to map routes that bypass/avoid non-fuelable star systems. Once Again - Fuel Rats you are legends. o7
FYI - there is a special place in heII for Fuel Rat killers, if you find one send them there & report them so we all can keep them in heII.

    Love this story. Really inspiring.
But ALSO - whoever the host is has one of the most AMAZING voices I've ever heard.
I am a music aficionado. I am highly attuned to the quality of vocalists, like Paul Rodgers, Chris Cornell, and even Ronnie James Rio (I met his mother just by chance).
But whoever is the host of this episode - I don't know this channel - he has a voice like no other. An incredible fingerprint, a stunning snowflake, he should be voicing characters in games, movies, television.
Someone, someone with more utility than myself, should be showcasing the gift on offer. Not let this talent go to waste. Those rich, dulcet tones, let them bring characters to life. I think people wouldn't be able to get enough....

Back when I was first still learning the game and feel management I ran out of fuel a few jumps outside of a solar system cluster. I was panicked because my brother had only just put the game up and it was still in the tutorial sector and couldn't come and help me let alone understand how to. After looking things up online a little bit I came across a Reddit post talking about a group called the fuel rats. Taking a shot in the dark I posted on the elite dangerous Reddit that I ran out of fuel and was needing some help. Some people kindly point me in the direction of filing that requested a fuel rats website and literally less than 10 minutes later some dude jumped into my system, gave me some fuel, and peaced out with a 'GG Happy Flying'.

Amusing random fact from the Deluvian rescue - The rats traveling to rescue Deluvion were streaming it on Twitch. Just a spaceship, going straight forward into the black at 2001C. No deviation from the course, since they were on a beacon bearing. There were over 1000 people watching that stream. Twitch admins came into the stream and went "What... Why is this one of the most watched long-running streams right now? Is this some sort of scam?"
Goes to show, content isn't always about what is happening. Sometimes it's about _why_ it is happening.

I haven't needed to call that rats yet but it's nice to know they re there if I do need them. Remember Commanders, buy a fuel scoop and watch your fuel gauge. KGBFOAM.

An excellent documentary. I've never called on The Fuel Rats myself. Once I figured out a) how fuel scooping works and b) how to filter my route for scoopable stars, I've never had any concerns about running out of fuel. I've travelled all over the Milky Way Galaxy with only a 16 ton fuel tank on board. :) But some day, when I finish my exploration projects (does it ever end???) I might join The Fuel Rats.

Isn't the person narrating this video was also a voice actor for the narrator in Disco Elysium ? His voice sounds familiar
