I don't think Caroline was deleted even thought she tried. She's Genetic life-form and disc operating system. Without Caroline she would be just disk operating system. I don't think she would have the same nature, character and voice if Caroline wasn't there.
I don't even think it's possible for her. It'll be like a computer trying to delete its motherboard by itself, which amounts to the AI equalvent of sucide I guess.
Yeah, GLaDOS is 100% faking deleting Caroline & being her early-game self as a coping mechanism to deal with her new humanity. The Turret Opera & Want You Gone both confirm that she’s not the same AI she was in the first game or early Portal 2.
I love that when Caroline speaks through Glados her voice is soft, but when Glados deletes her from her brian Glados’ voice changes and becomes waaaay more monotone and low...
Of course GlaDOS didn't delete Caroline. She may not have even deleted her old memories. GLaDOS is nothing if not duplicitous. I think she realized that she could no longer keep Chell there, or even offer to let her stay at that point, so she did what she needed in order to convince Chell that this happened and send her on her way. The turrets not killing her when they clearly had an opportunity to do so, as well as the song at the end essentially confirm this.
@@drmeduimant5066 Those memories and personality files would be incredibly formative for the neural template of Caroline that GlaDOS runs on, I tend to believe she just lied to Chelle to get her to accept that she was no longer welcome, needed, or desired at the facility. Instead she let go of her (honestly well directed) desire for revenge, let go of her anger, and let go of Chelle, whom she had grown to respect as a friend.
I think it makes more sense Glados deleted (or lied about deleting Caroline) then trying to hold onto that more human nature part of her. After all, even Caroline was more test focused than Johnson. This is all Glados has looking forward to life.
Everyone talks about how her voice changed immediately after Caroline was deleted. However, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that her voice sounded like GLaDOS was about to cry right before deletion.
I think the most amazing part about portal is the fact that Glados went *out of her way* to pull you back in from space. And even after deleting the Caroline part of her mind... she didnt just kill you. because she couldve, you were still severely injured from the explosion most likely. she didnt actually take the easiest way out. she kept her end of the bargain and let you go, to top it all off she spat out the companion cube you had to throw in the furnace, a final sign that she cares about Chell even without the Caroline part of her.
That's if Glados actually deleted Caroline the narrator never finishes the line he only says Caroline Delete and that maybe was just a trick to get Chell to leave.
Everyone has already pointed out the shift in her voice, but there's also a subtle shift in the lighting when she deletes Caroline. If you watch the floor, you'll see the color shift from warm to cold, almost like a light is being snuffed out. This game has so many little details it's nuts.
I like the way she says '...put me in a potato'. It's just so awkwardly said, it really underlines how absurd it is that a huge could be inside a little potato.
I've loved Portal 2 for a decade now and I've just now only realized that "Goodbye Caroline" isn't just a humorous line for GLaDOS but also a really cool callback to "Goodbye Caroline!" She really is a gem.

"You dangerous mute lunatic." I F***ING _KNEW_ THAT LINE WAS HERE. So I guess Chell is either canonically mute or that's not _actually_ true and is just a jab at Chell for not speaking at all in either portal game.

Caroline was the only trace of good left in GLaDOS, and the multiplayer involves looking for humans, who die within two weeks. (Unless we want the DLC retconned.) But now that I think about it, no one will believe me due to GLaDOS's speeches. And so, Caroline was freed of her roboic prison. All that remains now is the AI who WAS a human that has now got rid of that part of her. It's what Caroline would've wanted
I think people over complicate their theories about what happened to Caroline. I think GLaDOS DID delete Caroline, but just couldn’t delete who she’d become as the result of knowing and experiencing things like Caroline did. GLaDOS is her own entity. She has learned, adapted, and internalized that experience. It’s a part of her, and getting rid of Caroline’s influence isn’t as simple as deleting her.
i think that she was putting itonn o that chell wouldnt come back to the labs because cell is carolins daughter (in theory) and she actually delets GLaDOS part (evil) and the backup (caroline) takes over
I misquote GlaDOS on "the best solution to a problem is usually the easiest one". I legit thought it was something along the lines of the best solution being the easiest AND the hardest. I still kinda take it that way in a unspoken way since we know it took two whole games for GlaDOS to figure that out.
I noticed that in one of Cave Johnsons recordings he tells Caroline to say goodbye, to which she replys "Goodbye, Caroline." and now heres GLaDOS saying the exact same thing. Hmmmm......
Well, that's because she is Caroline. ;) And we don't really know what kind of personality she had before the transfer, people suspect she was compassionate and empathetic but really Caroline could have behaved the same way as GLaDOS, sarcastic, snarky, psychotic, emotional and compulsive liar.
My mom's name was Carolyn and she passed away on may 21 2010. When this game came out my 11 year old sister loved it. When she got to this ending speech, she cried because Caroline sounds like Carolyn.
I don't think Caroline really had morals, she and Cave did experiments on hobos, orphans and seniors, they pulled a lot of twisted stuff down in Old Aperture, the entire place was very corrupt and followed the ideology of Objectivity quite strongly. Though I think she has a good side and 'dark' side to her, like all of us, really. Even as a potato she's quite sarcastic, snarky and expresses sadistic thoughts. I truly think the homicidal and psychotic AI came from a homicidal and psychotic individual. But she has a soft spot.
I have a theory-.. so I think Glados is a master level actor. She wants chell to move on in the world, cuz she loves her. But she doesn't want her to feel lament about her mother being trapped in aperture for eternity (shown to be somewhat tortuous by the cave johnson AI going crazy and singing to toilet turrets for eternity), so she "deletes" mom, but still performs a loving turret recital for her, and sends her off with her scorched teddy bear companion cube she sentimentally pulled from the incinerator for you. Pretty sure she knows about the combine outside too, and probable expects chell to fuck em up (and maybe meet up with gordon freeman? Remember, aperture had the borealis stored there) Tbh coulda set her up with like a turret mech suit before she left too.. that mighta helped with the striders.
is interesting that she says that killing Chell is hard and then put her in a mortal situation she can't scape to show that she's lying, she's just to stubborn to say that she has grown attached to Chell
love this game. when i first watched this part and she said goodbye caroline, the lights went down, and the music changed i got scared thinking she was gonna go evil on chell again xD
@TaslemGuy And the ending of the Peer Review DLC. Also, deletion sometimes doesn't referr to destroying data, but putting it in an (sometimes) unreachable , digital dumpster. The data of Caroline's soul may still be there, and probably is still affecting GLaDOS.
Maybe Caroline was the initial cause of corruption. Think about it, she gets uploaded into glados. Then glados and a mountain of computer cores become corrupted. Caroline gets uploaded, realizes its hell to be uploaded and corrupts the cores
You know what's funny, Glados physically cannot delete Caroline. That would be like deleting System32 for her. So she's either lying to you or lying to herself that Caroline is gone.
Ah GLaDOS you secretly wanted her freedom because you didn't really delete Caroline or else you wouldn't have said "yano deleting Caroline just now" Oh GLaDOS you tease you!
Okay, okay. GLaDOS has Caroline as a template. GLaDOS herself, isn't Caroline, because they don't share the same body, nor the same brain structure. GLaDOS only used Caroline so that she could boot up, after that...she doesn't need Caroline anymore, therefor, she is no longer Caroline.
the weighted companion cubes are filled with test subjects because when they get incinerated they say "help me" and glados tells you to ignore the voices
I love how she just... Concedes victory to you. You don't really win, she just gives up trying to kill you.
I count that as wining
I think she would delete herself if she got killed again...

i think that she was putting itonn o that chell wouldnt come back to the labs because cell is carolins daughter (in theory) and she actually delets GLaDOS part (evil) and the backup (caroline) takes over
I misquote GlaDOS on "the best solution to a problem is usually the easiest one". I legit thought it was something along the lines of the best solution being the easiest AND the hardest. I still kinda take it that way in a unspoken way since we know it took two whole games for GlaDOS to figure that out.
The description is really a time capsule 💀
back in my day
I noticed that in one of Cave Johnsons recordings he tells Caroline to say goodbye, to which she replys "Goodbye, Caroline." and now heres GLaDOS saying the exact same thing.
Caroline is the human part of her, the real morality and memories. When deleted, she becomes the test-driven mad AI she was for good.
"It's been fun, don't come back 😊"
maybe the real science is the friends we made along the way
I have a theory-.. so I think Glados is a master level actor. Remember, aperture had the borealis stored there)
Tbh coulda set her up with like a turret mech suit before she left too.. that mighta helped with the striders.
ever since I heard that quote the solution to a problem is usually the easiest one I've been following it
is interesting that she says that killing Chell is hard and then put her in a mortal situation she can't scape to show that she's lying, she's just to stubborn to say that she has grown attached to Chell
there's like a melody to her voice between 0:12 to 0:19 that's addictive
Everyone’s talking about how her voice changes while I’m over here questioning myself for get aroused over a +50 year old ladies voice with autotune
love this game. when i first watched this part and she said goodbye caroline, the lights went down, and the music changed i got scared thinking she was gonna go evil on chell again xD
HOW YOU GET SO MANNY DANM VEWS FOR THIS
a magician never reveals his secrets
GIVE ME FUCKIN PORTAL 3!!!!
janekej plz
I like how her voice became a lot more robitic after caroline was deleted, kinda sad tho :(
I want to Delete My Emotions Too
"And then you showed up, you dangerous, mute lunatic. So you know what? You win. Just GO. *laugh* its been fun. Don't come back."
I love the way she says potato.
@TaslemGuy And the ending of the Peer Review DLC. Also, deletion sometimes doesn't referr to destroying data, but putting it in an (sometimes) unreachable , digital dumpster. The data of Caroline's soul may still be there, and probably is still affecting GLaDOS.
"It's been fun. Don't come back."
Maybe Caroline was the initial cause of corruption.
Think about it, she gets uploaded into glados. Then glados and a mountain of computer cores become corrupted.
Caroline gets uploaded, realizes its hell to be uploaded and corrupts the cores
She sounds human until "...where Caroline lives in my brain." She uses Caroline's attachment to Chell, her empathy, her humanity, to kill her.
1:07 peak dramatic scripting!
You know what's funny, Glados physically cannot delete Caroline. That would be like deleting System32 for her. So she's either lying to you or lying to herself that Caroline is gone.
If she deleted Caroline completely she wouldn’t know who Caroline was
Ah GLaDOS you secretly wanted her freedom because you didn't really delete Caroline or else you wouldn't have said "yano deleting Caroline just now" Oh GLaDOS you tease you!
I wish I could delete parts of my memory like that...
When I first played this, i litterally fell off my chair in shock and fear after *CAROLINE DELETED*..... JEEZ that scared me!
You dangerous mute lunatic, best... portal... quote... ever. Also I hope they release portal 3
0:29 that sound...
You dangerous, mute, lunatic
0:51-1:14 Almost everyone to 2020 & COVID-19
"Oh thank God you're alright."
Okay, okay. GLaDOS has Caroline as a template. GLaDOS herself, isn't Caroline, because they don't share the same body, nor the same brain structure. GLaDOS only used Caroline so that she could boot up, after that...she doesn't need Caroline anymore, therefor, she is no longer Caroline.
lazyfireball7889 glados is genetic lifeform disc and operating system
Whitout caroline it would be only disc operating system
@@guifdcanalliDOS /j
the weighted companion cubes are filled with test subjects because when they get incinerated they say "help me" and glados tells you to ignore the voices
i looked up portal 2 x wii deleted you. this is what i got. Y E S
We need Portal 22 Episode: 1 so we can have more GLaDOS!
Its just me or when caroline is deleted, the voice of Glados change to a more "cold" voice?
I sometimes wish where when GLaDoS says “Goodbye Caroline” makes me want to hack into her systems and save herself
