I totally agree with you on the Z5. I bought one about 6months ago used for a great price and it has been an amazing camera. The image quality and color science are incredible. I bought a cheap 50mm f1.8g for family portraits and I was blown away. I loved the Z5 so much that I decided to go all in with Nikon and sold all my Olympus gear to fund a used Zfc to compliment the Z5. Nikon knows what they are doing when it comes to their lenses and that beautiful image quality. I really hope they make a strong comeback because I'm a fan!
I was heavily considering the Z5 but found it a bit too big, which is why I went to the fuji xt30. The weathersealing is nice on that though, and the ergonomics felt great. I think if you want to do photo walk stuff and talking about your thought process is nice and would be nice to hear. But I also think it's fair to keep some of your photo stuff for yourself. With some of your past burnout conversations, it could help to keep pieces off of here to preserve some of that joy so it's not all for content and keeps some of the pressure off.
I’d definitely pick Nikon over Canon mirrorless. I tried out the Canon R, RP, Nikon Z5 and Sony A7 II over a few weekends a couple of years ago and picked the A7 II, even though I went into that decision favouring the Z5. Reasons were I preferred the handling (that surprised me), lens choice and accessories availability. I recently suggested to a friend to pick one up secondhand I worked out he could get the body mint (5K SC) a Yongnuo 35 f2 & 85mm f1.8 along with a Sony FE 50mm F1.8 for under 1200EUR (the Yongnuo lenses being new). That’s incredible value imo
Excellent video. I’m a long time Nikon shooter. I’m also very set with my D3s, D4, D7OO, D610 blah blah etc. I’ve really dug my feet in concrete in NO NEED FOR A Z SERIES CAMERA! In fact; I was insulted Nikon would all but abandon the DSLR for mirrorless, making a whole different line of cameras, I’m sure much less costly to produce but slapping on a high price tag! Now in watching your informative video; this Z5 is the first mirrorless I am now intrigued enough to purchase. I just found several online between $450.00 and $650. Thank you very much.
Pretty crazy value there. I’ve got an R6-II in my hands right this minute. Almost the opposite end of the spectrum. Had the A7IV. Don’t know if I’m insane or what but I prefer my X-T4 over both. Was thinking of trying a Nikon next - maybe the Zf or original 6 -but I don’t know why I bother anymore. Definitely in favor of the POV. Why not, right?
Familiarity is huge for sure. I’m going to try to spend more time than I usually would with the R6II though. The performance is truly insane. And canon vibes > Sony vibes all day.
I paid $1,600 for my Lumix S1R with literally less than 60 shutter actuations from KEH. Batteries are very cheap compared to my Leica SL 601 and has a lot of modern features minus phase detect AF. I don’t really need phase detect AF so I can live without it. Should I sell my Lumix S1R along with my Leica SL and get a Lumix S5II or keep the S1R and just sell my Leica SL? I really love my Leica SL but I also have a Leica M10 and M10 Monochrom so that may make it easy for me to part with it. I just need a 24-70mm 2.8 and 85mm prime and I’ll be pretty set in terms of lenses. I do plan to eventually get more paid jobs and the L mount camera I settle on is the one I’ll use for those jobs. I do want a 21mm for my M cameras but that’s later down the road, not really itching for it right now. Just wanna settle on a L mount camera now that I’ve personally cured my GAS and my 2 M digital cameras and 1 lone L mount camera is what I’m wanting to settle for. Could use some advice or suggestions!
Have you tried adapting M mount lenses or you 35mm Nikon glass on the z5? I’ve been tossing around the idea of getting something similar to pair with my m240 with out dropping a lot of money on an SL system. Mainly looking to use it for adapting glass but having the option to pick up a AF lens or 2 for when I need that.
Yes show us some POV photography footage, the stuff you did on trips in the past was not too bad…. As for doing less gear, I think you are chronically hooked on gear swapping and still looking for the perfect camera (which you know does not exist) and justifying the swaps these days for cost etc… ( which I also understand btw, but I don’t see you happy with this for more than a month, since about 2-3 months ago you were saying you were done with GAS, had found the perfect setup etc…..). I say all this with a degree of “thanks” for sharing all your thoughts and process openly… Try the actual photography route and see if that fulfills you. Looking forward to the next surprise….
The answer is no you get 3 axis IBIS with adapted G glass and not the 5 axis IBIS with the native Z lenses - not exactly sure how this translates to stops of IBIS but it must be less than the full amount - maybe 3 stops (just guessing here). Still this is pretty great as lenses that were totally unstabilized in the past like the 105 1.4E, or the 58 1.4G etc that did not have any stabilization before because the DSLR's did not have IBIS, now enjoy 3 axis image stabilization - they also focus better on the mirrorless system than they dis natively on the DSLR's as there is on sensor AF and AF points across the entire frame. So, in many ways the G glass is now better than it ever was - which is great since there is such a huge selection of great G glass that is now very affordable on the used market. -PD
Sadly, the 28. 2.8 and the 40 2 are the only affordable lenses for the Z system. 500€ for a 50mm 1.8 (which used to be a kit Lens back in the day) is painful. Also the 35mm 1.8, ist very expensive. The Z system needs more affordable, low f number lenses. You don't always have to include stellar optics.
Agree with you on Nikon, sold all my M43 and DSLR Nikons. Now fully into Nikon mirroless and Z glass.

well i still have Olympus gear (more to come) but for FF, i prefer Nikon.

Robin Wong recently got that camera. Seems like a solid choice.

I’ve been using my Z5 with the 28mm 2.8 for years, it’s a really fun set up! I have the 50mm 1.8s as well, it’s served me well since 2020 🤙🏼

Yep, let's def do them photowalks!
Good choice - I’m still happy with mine!
Thanks for sharing this option. I already have a full stable, but this is a solid choice.
Crazy value in Nikon
Now I’m looking at the z5 again
Totally agree! Have the Z5 for a 1year now and coming from Fuji.
Two years ago I won this camera on a photo contest with Nikon and sold it to get my Sony A74....lol but its a great camera.

Get it. The XT4 is probably more familiar and is less “computer” feeling. It’s why keep going back to Fuji, Nikon, Olympus.
Familiarity is huge for sure. I’m going to try to spend more time than I usually would with the R6II though. The performance is truly insane. And canon vibes > Sony vibes all day.
Z5 great choice really small with the 28mm and 40mm Nikon primes.

S1R and your M bodies

Yes I’ve shot m glass on it. Looks fine. ZF is the best Mf option for Nikon
Or maybe Nikon Z6 and you get 4k video without crop. Nikon is a solid choice in the full frame category and don`t cost an arm and a leg.

Do you still get 5stops of ibis when using Fmount G-glass?🤔
Good question. I assume so if that 5 stops all comes from sensor ibis.
