my favorite song in the whole musical and you did justice, like the contrast of andrey in that war somewhere while everyone was sitting there amused was haunting
Yess! I really wanted to point out how there's a literal war going on yet all the Moscow aristocrats be just having the best time of their lives and treating the war just like another play or opera (as in; those things aren't happening to themselves directly and they can watch it from a safe distance)
I don't know much about the backstory, but isn't Natasha a Russian countess? Wouldn't that most certainly make her white? Not saying it's bad to show her as black- but I wouldn't suggest that it's wrongful whitewashing to show a northern European in the 1800s as white (unless she's specifically stated to be black somewhere).
@@andreweth8301 im assuming the issue with drawing Natasha as white is bc she’s almost never white in gc productions. If it was just the characters of war and peace in a gc song, then obv there wouldn’t be an issue. but bc the characters are meant to resemble the actors in gc, natasha should be black (unless ofc its pippa’s version, but she still isn’t white) even tho its more accurate to the og story, if its an animatic/art based off the gc cast, natasha shouldn’t be white. hope this clears that up🤷♀️
@bearnamedpublius , I don't think insisting on either is ok really. I think this being a musical based on a novel makes for a great opportunity for different artists to choose their Natasha, and any other character really. It would make the audience ask less questions if this character is white, sure, but you know, why not ask more questions? A very prominent Russian poet Alexander Pushkin had black ancestors and his somewhat darker skin and beautiful curly hair is shown for all to see in his portraits. Sometimes more questions is interesting)
This is an absolutely brilliant animatic. It covers the full song (which is WAY TOO LONG HOLY MOLY), and it has some beautiful artwork, too. Also, I have to take a moment to appreciate 3:08. That fourth wall break. That’s genius.
This is amazing! Your animation of the actual opera performance had me in tears, it felt exactly like the first time I ever saw it! It was beautiful and chilling all at the same time, thank you for bringing this to life! 😍🌠🎭
Haha yeah, I actually found out that she and Boris are, you know, actual characters in War And Peace only after I was done with this animatic but then it was already too late to put actual thought to their designs :D
DUDE AKDKAKDLSJFKFH THIS IS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER WATCHED. THE LIGHTING CHANGES THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS WOW and your art style is so aesthetically pleasing!!!!! wow omg thank you for creating this
Haha that's nice to hear!! (I didn't try to recreate the opera sequence from the actual stage musical but) in this particular animation the opera is probably about the same themes as Natasha and Andrey are currently going through in their lives: lovers separated by the horrors of the war, missing and dreading what could happen to the other while they are apart. And maybe about the devastating aftermatch when they both do end up living, but are each changed so much that future together isn't possible anymore. Kinda foreshadowing what is about to happen to Natasha and Andrey as well. Natasha doesn't really connect the dots between her life and the opera, because she, and many others in the hall, haven't experienced war first hand and therefor see the play just as a play. (As I replied to someone else's comment about the audience's reaction: I wanted to point out how there's a literal war going on yet all the aristocrats are having the best time of their lives and treating the war just like another play or opera (as in; those things aren't happening to themselves directly and can be watched from a safe distance which makes it feel unreal) ) She's too naive and impatient to understand the deeper meanings but rather sees the opera as it is: something fake and weird, hence everyone else must be just pretending to get it. I made notes about the symbolism in this video back when making it but can't find them anymore, but I do recall having this kind of thoughts behind the whole thing :DD Hoping that that explained!

1:20. that is all.
I really want to know what you think the opera is about, I was so invested watching that.
