for real, I would sacrifice one of the XLR for a SDI port or worst case, flip the timecode for a SDI because we can get timecode over audio these days...don't really know how well it works but I hear it works.

Bingo. That alone would bring SO much value to me and countless others. I run a livestreaming rig with 8 Canon cameras and the lack of SDI on the C70 often means “lesser” cameras are utilized just to avoid the potential point of failure of a HDMI>SDI converter, or the addition of a decimator, etc. I love the image this camera produces and don’t see a replacement that checks all the boxes (at least from Canon) quite yet, but I am eager awaiting the next announcement……

I have wondered for a long time why canon dont make more accessories for their cameras that they can sell on an after market.. like the backplates that was made for the RED komodo to change it to V-mount.
Or maybe something like the c500 mark 2 / c300 mark 3 that makes it V-mount. - It would be so easy, and keep a lot of people hanging on to their canon gear until they annonce the next gen cameras :)
Or maybe even an "adaptor" that is just RF to RF but with a speedbooster and an ND filter in it... its such a little thing, but would change the world for a lot of people.
Now RED made their own ND filter.. And KipperTie made one also.. more and more makes NDs "build in" behind the lens..
But canon knows the lenses better and could make the best for their systems.. yeah.. if canon asked for ideas I would gladly take some days off to tell them what I think is missing :P hahhaha

C70 is by far the most versatile camera on the market:
Only camera with a built in ND system that is color neutral and with enough stops to truly replace a matte box (also can be used with a polarizer unlike the EVND from the FX6).
It also has everything else like:
      - internal raw
      - full sensor/resolution 120p
      - false color and other exposure tools
      - great battery life
      - awesome autofocus
      - The most dynamic range outside of a Red or an Arri.

I ended up picking up the R6 Mark II last Friday but another videographer told me I wouldn't be able to shoot in all intra at 60fps. So my options were R5 R5C but I already own the R5C so it seemed crazy to buy another one. I went with the C70 and I love the features of the camera but the crop center is really troubling me. I actually need a wider angle shooting myself in my office 60% of the time. I'm trying to get more corporate work or more outside work.

I also own 2 C70's and have been using them on most projects. We mostly shoot documentary work, and for that it is still really good. We recently used Arri 35 on a commercial. That footage was really easy to color in Davinci and looked incredible. That being said, I don't think client would have noticed the difference if we shot the entire thing on our c70's. As DP's we notice, but the viewer rarely notices the dynamic range and beauty of an Arri sensor. Lighting / intentional focus / Good framing mean so much more. All that to say C70's are still dope and I'll probably keep ours for another 2-3 years. Like you I'm looking for Canon to have a full frame version of the C70 that is box style and resolution of 5k or 6k.

Working at a production house with four C-70's we've had to service them for the bad wiggly screens multiple times and currently they are already needing to be serviced again. This is for mostly corporate and non-profit, not anything crazy like a car commercial so I can imagine the durability being a huge issue for you like you mentioned. Love the camera and image quality for the price, wish they would release a box style too. Sony's FX-6 really crushed it design wise but that weird top handle is the only drawback... C-70 having the mini xlr in the body is an annoyance but at least it's fixed on it. Great video!

You totally nailed my gripes with the C70 - I’ve just purchased one recently after shooting on a C100 M2 for years. Yes I love the C70 codec choices, image quality and improved autofocus. I thank Canon for the great firmware updates. I went into the purchase acknowledging the weaknesses of the super 35 sensor and the other quirks of this “odd duck” camera. The display is joke - especially because no EVF and it will be used frequently! The display hinge is horrible-even with the “improvement”. The C100 hinge is so strong you could swing the camera by the display (yes I’m exaggerating but you get the point) Yes, image is “soft” compared to other 4k cameras. Yes, the bottom plate is weird - I got a small rig plate which is almost a must. Yes, the build compared to the C100 is weak - seems like cheaper plastic. All said the camera still has a respectable feature set in a compact package. Great battery life for “run and gun” people in the field like me. I had to find a EVF solution shooting outdoors but I’m dealing with it. Overall still very happy with the camera even in 2024.

I am still in love with the image I get out of my C70 everytime I come to edit and grade, there is just so much maliability in the image and the highlight retention is glorious. I have graded it against FX6 footage and it still comes out on top. I doubt any end user would notice but it feels like a more pleasing image to look at.
But my 3 biggest issues is the form factor, flippy screen and the HDMI only. Now that I've started to build it out with crews, the flippy screen actually bothers me less as I wouldnt need it to capture sound or change much that I can't map to a button. But when you're on your own and you need to adjust mic levels, especially when the camera is on rails with a v-mount battery, it gets annoying.
A box camera would definitely be a preference next gen. I wouldn't even want a full frame sensor, I would just love the current image in S35 but maybe with a 3:2 sensor to accomodate anamorphic lenses, as well as a 6K resolution. That would do me just fine!

Yeah I enjoy the C70 as well. I do keep wishing of course that the Canon Cinema Line would progress. Obviously the cube camera with SDIs is what I want. But for what it does, the C70 is incredibly flexible. The other thing that isn't officially discussed is that with the RF to EF speedbooster, I can use the older 24-105 F4 and get an F2.8 out of it which is fabulous. I know the new RF 24-105 is the perfect documentary lens, but wow that's cool that the old EF version can get you the extra stop and wider field of view. Anyway, I enjoy your videos. But the C70 is getting so cheap used now that I'm tempted to pick one up as a B-Cam (I'm in China and see prices for non-beaten C70 around USD2,700). I do not care at all whether other people are getting rid of cameras all the time, for me they are a tool and I still prefer this mainly because I know it inside out and know I can always rely on it to get the job done. I have no problem with others feeling the same way about Sony or Blackmagic at this price range.

The C70 is still my workhorse for sure, but I agree with each of your points, Griffin: 1. I wish it were at least 6k, whether for oversampling or for reframing; 2. I wish it were a box (I enjoy the form factor of the C200 more most of the time); 3. The bottom plate screw configuration is nonsensical; and 4. It's just not a very well-built camera. Even the EOS-R is better-built. For real.
I guess I would also say that I get sharper images out of the C200 raw vs. the C70. I like the falloff better on the C70, but the C200 IQ (from raw codec) still seems sharper to me.

I think I’ll have to sell mine due to the following problems that are a deal breaker:
    1. It overheats when exposed to temps above 200F -very troublesome to keep it running for more than an hour.
    2. Difficult to balance it on a gimbal.: As soon as I change the lens from a telephoto to a pancake lens, the gimbal loses balance and I am having to rebalance again-very frustrating.
    3. Has too many shooting modes that have extremely poor resolution of 24p. Industry is moving away from 1080p as insufficient, which is why 24p seems extremely low compared to 1080p.
    4. Shutter settings are kinda gimmicky I think, because I couldn’t even locate a shutter when I removed the lens.
I can achieve better results with the new iPhone or Samsung device and they’re more compact, and offer ip68 resistance to elements.

I like the C70, and the form factor is fun, but it doesn't add anything. It would be preferable to have something a little larger. Plus, if it were a little larger, a viewfinder could be added. The screen is too small to be very useful, and if the idea is more-or-less "run-and-gun," adding another screen with battery adaptations seems to be against the thesis, if not swimming upstream.
I'm wondering what they're going to do with the new C200. Lots of decisions, e.g., EF vs RF, FF vs S35, recording media, price point. And since they move so slow in cinema, these have to be correct decisions.

C300 mark iii is missing a lot of what the c70 has. Smaller raw, lower power draw, better weather sealing, and better autofocus are the two main ones for me.

    • @hippy3000
      @hippy3000 9 месяцев назад +1

@@GriffinConwayWe've done quite some testing and saw no difference in AF between the two. You've observed differently?
The battery power is definitely annoying. Canon told us when the camera was released, on why it draws as much power as an c500II is because of the DGO sensor double readout. Low and behold 6 months later de C70 with the same sensor draws 1/3th of the power. Luckily a firmware update fixed this partly and gave 50% more battery life.
The codecs are even more annoying. I've talked with Canon a few times, they say the users of the C300 don't ask for more compressed raw. Which is of course bullshit, nobody would say no to more options. There is no reason for those lower bitrate C-raw codecs not to be in the C300. When it comes to long term support of their high models, Canon is very lacking compared to most other brands.
Neither are weather sealed though, nothing is with a fan and vent.
The build quality is miles better on the C300 though. Body, screen, hinge, dials, joystick all very flimsy.
For us the higher versatility in form factor, i/o and expandability made the price difference a no-brainer.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  9 месяцев назад

@@hippy3000 I have a c500 mark ii and agree about no support for the higher models unfortunately. I would have really loved compressed raw in that one. I've had mine since launch, and keep getting tempted to change up or do something different. I have also had two breakages, but one was me dropping it right off the top of a tripod onto a stone path on a Scottish island, and the other one was dropped when it was out for hire. The second time the screen was absolutely fine but the HDMI port somehow got fried. I do feel a bit like I'm babying the camera now when I get it out, but those were quite extreme drops and I'm not sure many other cameras would have been much different. That said I would love it if the screen was a different design. It still produces great images though and works for everything I use it for. Canon definitely working on something pretty big. Starting to pull in some influencer types, tested the water with this weird shaped C70. learnt what is actually needed etc. Wouldn't be surprised if next year / 2025 they drop something to seriously level the playing field with Sony. I kinda regret my C70 currently, and should have gone FX6, the shape is just so weird, those 1/4 20s not in the right alignment, so front heavy with a lens on it, flys on a gimbal weird, screen very fragile, can't assign the main scroll wheel to anything, can't use custom profiles - That would be very helpful to have a 25fps C1, 60fps C2 and a 120fps C3 for example. Manually setting these each time is lame, rolling shutter on it is actually pretty bad considering - It's great in 120fps, but then you lose DGO... Nah, this wasn't serving my need in the end. As you say though Griffin, video quality is still one of the best out there, I'm forever bowled over with the image in the edit, it retains so much. I really want a right hand trigger grip, FX6 is that right shape for me. Kinda feels like no one has them here in London, everyone on Sony's. Canon playing catch up and it's almost as slow as Panasonic was to get Phase Detect AF, is next year too late? We'll see! Not gonna sell mine, mainly because I'd have to take such a hit on resale price currently. Tested the market a bit and got no bites as well actually so...

Griffin, as you're thinking of letting go of the C70, I'm considering picking one up. Have a RED V-Raptor, but want something for my company's Canon glass to upgrade our older Canon DSLRs and have as a primary interview cam. My question on the C70 I don't see any good answers on are, does it suffer from moire issues? I know it doesn't have an optical low pass filter, and some reviews (albeit rare ones) complain about bad moire. In your time using it in shoots, interviews, or events (think weddings), has that ever been an issue? Thank you so much.

I was in the same position as you about a year ago. Deciding between C70 and R5C. I was nervous that a camera from 2020 would be soon replaced after I picked it up. But after canon kept releasing fw updates with new features I went with the C70. Super happy with it. Beautiful for documentary and interview shots. I also do a lot of high end real estate photography. Ended up picking up an R5C a few weeks ago. Very happy with it as well being full frame and not needing an adapter for my 15-35 (needed an adapter on may EF 16-35 on the C70 to get closer to full frame), it's a great hybrid for real estate. But the C70 definitely feels more cinema in it's form factor and the built in audio and ND's. Also the R5C battery is horrendous so I have it caged with a Vmount battery to get decent shoot time.
