The Lost Coast Highway is among my top 3 motorcycle roads in the west coast area. I rode it some 18 years ago and your videos brought the memories come flooding back. It's every bit as good as your excitement conveys.
The Lost Coast Century is a 100-mile bike ride in California. It's also called the Tour of the Unknown Coast. The route includes beautiful scenery, but also has sections of bad pavement, steep climbs, and twisty descents. The Lost Coast is a mostly natural and undeveloped area of the California North Coast in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties. It was named the "Lost Coast" after the area experienced depopulation in the 1930s. When the Pacific Coast Highway was being built, engineers chose to go around this 100-mile section of coast.
Sterling, I'm convinced that northern California offers some of the best motorcycle roads in the world, certainly in the US. When I lived in The Bay Area I frequently took day rides along the costal range avoiding US101 and I-5 like the plague. CA36 between Red Bluff and US101 ranks as my all time favorite road on a bike.
Sterling...your filming and production is incredible! I almost forgot how beautiful and mystical the north coast is. You captured it perfectly. We used to abalone dive down at Mendocino. Thank you so much.
Great video. Couple comments on the video. Ferndale - 'No Brand Burger' joint. Small, dingy, but has great burgers. 6:00 Malfunction Junction. Monument Road to the East. Fantastic ADV bike ride. 8:00 Capetown. Old stage stop. Day's horse travel from Petrolia and Ferndale. 9:40 Sugar Loaf Rock. Cape Mendocino. Sea Cave is on the Western face. 10:38 Steam Boat Rock. North view - old Steam Schooner. South view - Trawler. 11:50 That point is called 'Devils Gate'. 13:05 Owners of that ranch used to have Zebras. Past Petrolia, turn right, Lighthouse road down to the beach, campground. (Wind, fog.) Off Lighthouse road, Prospect ridge great views, hike access to the Punta Gorda light. A.W. Way County Park. Very nice. Old Honeydew Store - Also has a 'No Brand Burgers'. If open... it's good ! Usually at the 'Needle Rock' campsite... lots of Elk around. 'Golden Hour' is special.
Your video i brings me so many great memories. In have done that Ferndale to the lost coast five times. Its truly one of the most beautiful experiences I have had.
I camped at Needles few years back, rode my Africa Twin up USAL Rd. which was tricky in a few spots with a full load. We had elk visit our campsite. Beautiful spot. Need to get back. Great video
Hello Sterling, I'm visiting my son in Everett, Washington after having taken a five day motorcycle journey on the slab from the Atlanta area. I'll be here a week, and was discussing with him a scenic route to the central Illinois home, where I'm from. I'm seriously looking at Highway 2. That'll take me through Stevens Pass, Kalispell, and many other high country out of the way places that likely don't see a lot of strangers pass through. It'll undoubtably take some time and planning to assure I don't leave myself short on gas and lodging when darkness comes, but then that's what adventure is.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Mattole Rd. So beautiful and off the beaten path yet so rough/beaten up I'd rather ride on gravel, but It's worth ridding every 5-10 years:) I'll be heading down that way next week from Oregon to the Redwoods but will be avoiding the Lost Coast this year.
I love your extemporaneous Road Less Traveled motorcycle adventures. The riding in this episode was exactly what I enjoy. I'm too old for technical off road riding but not too old for some back road motorcycle adventures. Thank you for sharing. It's very motivational.
Crazy, I was just camping south of Petrolia last week, right on the Matole river. Adventure bike heaven. Little old lady who runs the one market in that town sells great home made hot dog links. Did you see the other room in the Honeydew store that has all the mounted game? An Arizona ride is in the works for me. Love this channel!
I did the same thing my first time on Mattole! Turned around and did that "reveal" again =D 2021, on my way back from MOA Rally in Montana. I had started the day in Medford, got to Ferndale early afternoon. Low overcast, a little damp. As I climbed up and out of town, it got really dark and foggy in spots, but the cloud layer turned out to be thin and I soon found myself with clear blue skies and the hill tops above the clouds. The cloud layer ended completely by the time I came around that bend. Had to pull over (not easy...it's steep!) to absorb it. Breathtaking view. That short run along Black Sand Beach...damn... I stayed on Mattole Road past Honeydew and camped at Albee. Went through there again in 2022 with a group, and decided I needed to spend a week in the area. Didnt happen in 23, but planning an extended return in June this year. Cant wait.
That is some prime rockfish spots you’re passing. I would encourage you to invest in a fishing pole for lingcod, rockfish and Dungenous crab. You can fish right in the rocks and cook your catch at camp. 👍
Dear Sterling, you are an enlightened man, for you are always discovering contemplative scenes and landscapes. A big hug from your brother from Brazil!
I grew on the north coast and traveled those roads and more many many times. So beautiful, I still ride that area from time to time with my coastal friends. Thanks for the video.
California, where have all the grown ups gone? I will say it's nice to see the young folk learning the value of a dollar. Another great video, your campsite finding abilities are top notch.
Thanks so much for this beautiful video, and for taking the time to make this one a little longer. I’m with you in always looking for the little gray lines on the map. What a payoff. Thanks again.
Good Job Sterling. It's fun to turn off the highway and be greeted my beautiful views and curvy roads . I'm so jealous. Thank you for sharing your trip with us my friend. BREATHING RIDE ❤
Beautiful video Sterling, riding the Pacific coast this year, I had great days like this discovering the small towns and beautiful places that still remain in California. Thank you for sharing
What awesome scenery! And a delicious looking dinner. You constantly provide ideas for meals, cooking techniques and good supplies to have on hand. I head out on an 8-day journey up through the mid-Atlantic states in 2 days. Thanks for taking us along! Cheers!
That was a beautiful area I was able to see last week thanks to you. I walked the trail past the barn and was able to see 2 bull elk and a covey of quail just before dark. It was amazing. Thx again.
Sterling great road my friend it reminds me of the west coast of the south island of New Zealand truly amazing road have you ever need to New Zealand you won't regret coming here 😊
Sterling, you drove past Cameron Lake near Port Alberni On Vancouver Island on your trip through AZ-BC. A few months ago the area went through a forest fire. The road way has been on alternating travel ever since. Clean up continues. May be of interest.
I’m gonna tell your brother I don’t think it gets much better than that great job on the video and I follow you for quite some time this is one of the better ones good job be safe
Welcome to my backyard, Sterling. One of the most magical places in California- a state filed with many magical places; Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Carmel, Big Sur, Death Valley, Joshua Tree…. Know you know why we stay, it is not for the politics!
Great video. I was going to recommend that you stop by the Samoa Cookhouse near Eureka for a unique dining experience but it looks like they are temporarily closed for renovation. Have to catch them next time around. Enjoy the ride.
The Lost Coast - a remote and stunning way to fully test your suspension🙂. Thank you for sharing and bringing back many memories of travel through this unknown jewel.
Hello Solo Rider, I’m very impressed with your videos. I live in Texas and because of your trips, I got inspired and motivated to visit my sister in California. Can you send me the route you took and I can enjoy those views and visit my sister. Thanks for everything
Amazing video! I rode down to Shelter Cove back in December 2022 with my wife (I don't recommend that, as the ice on that old wagon road is very sketchy), and as soon as I saw this video, I had to check to see if you made it down there. We stayed in the Oceanfront Inn for a few nights and went to the brewery several times. It's a hidden bit of paradise and I definitely want to go back in warmer weather. The Lost Coast is probably one of the most magical places in the country. Thanks for sharing with us!
I'm a little jealous. I went down the Briceland road last fall. I got halfway to the coast and it was blocked by a downed tree. Must have been after your travels.
Great memories for me ~ have driven on many of the same places ~ this summer i am meandering the craziest little roads in umbria in italy where I'm recording my new album , which is called giro in umbria ( touring in umbria) ~ anyhow marvelous episode yet again
I love that area! We were just up there end of April. Went through Ferndale as well and stayed the night in Shelter Cove (the Venezuelan restaurant is excellent btw). Missed out on Mattole Rd; we'll have to do that one next time.
Thanks Sterling, your vlogs are awesome and keep getting better! Informative and entertaining. Mattole road is on my bucket list. Your Lost Coast adventure adds even more! 👍
The unexpected, those moments that leave you speechless... and that you will carry with you forever. That's motorcycling.
Ya Hoo! My Tiger 800 got a feature shot on the channel! Great to meet you while overlapping a night on the Lost Coast. Great video
Thanks!!! that’s cool you were out there too!
The Lost Coast Highway is among my top 3 motorcycle roads in the west coast area. I rode it some 18 years ago and your videos brought the memories come flooding back. It's every bit as good as your excitement conveys.
That was so awesome Sterling....felt like I was along for the ride
Always feel relaxed after watching your films
Thanks again, Mark
Watching your video while having dinner at home and thinking that my motorcycle is in my garage. I better go for a ride now 😂

It was Clement Salvadori's articles on the Forgotten Coast that got me hooked on this place. What vistas...

Have a great trip! Highway 2 is pretty nice!
Nice to see some old stomping grounds. I graduated from HSU in 1989. You're having a great adventure. I'm enjoying following along.
