At 65, my new rule is never to take a bike off road that weighs much more than me. So that maxes me out at a 250cc two or four-stroke. Big bikes are just not fun anymore - not that they ever really were. People rationalize taking a big bike off road, but to be honest, a 100+ hp bike off road has FAR more disadvantages than advantages, especially when riding alone.
That’s great if you can offroad in your back yard, where I’m from taking an 250cc bike on the big road is a death wish. But yes, light might be better.
My first bike was a “Honda Step-through” 55 years ago - I rode that little wonder all over the place and now at 72, after numerous road and off-road bikes, I have retired my latest Ducati and ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan.
Cancer and Chemo have caused a 30% loss of weight (mostly muscle), so now when I drop the Himalayan (only occasionally) I absolutely need assistance to right it. So I am seriously looking at going back to the same bike that I started with, travelling on a rack on the back of the Jeep to the places I ride. As you get older, practicality and common sense mean more than an “ego trip” riding a huge bike you can no longer handle (or need).
Moto-Winch, don't leave home without it! I still like to go on multi- day rides and you can't do that on a 250cc bike.
@@heleti0000Glad to hear you're still riding @72. I currently have a Honda 400 TransAlp that weighs about as much as your Himalayan, as well as a Honda XR150. I accidentally put my 400 down while on trail ride last weekend and was most grateful that my younger friend helped me lift it. I was SO sorry I never used my li'll XR150. It can cruise at 55 mph all day and actually uses slightly less than half the fuel that my 400 uses. I think they were selling for $2971 in the US (exc dealer taxes) at one stage. Mine is a 2015 model (been available here in South Africa since then) and has not seen a dealer for maintenance etc, as yet.
I've always loved the Honda Trail 125. If I were to buy a motorcycle, it would probably be a Honda Trail. I love poking around back country trails.

You are right about smaller motorcycles, Started out on a Honda CB100, now riding a BMW R1200 GS. Have really been thinking about getting a Honda CRF300 for riding around the back roads, here in Wyoming. At 71 a lighter bike would come in handy, just needs a lower seat height.

Your delight with the Trail 125 is infectious! Looking forward to your "tour" loaded with camping kit on the T125. There's no surprise that it handles the 4WD routes well. Your opinion of how it does with luggage and assorted highway routes may be a revelation. I'll stay tuned!
I totally got what you were saying about the rekindled joy of biking on a smaller bike, more in line with the first days of biking. I've been riding since I was 10 years old and bought a tiger XC800 three years ago (having spent the vast majority of my riding on larger street bikes, Goldwings, and Large baggers or cruisers. Now the XC 800 just makes me a kid again riding all those back trails, dirt roads, etc that I did as a teenager and I have a perpetual grin on my face while doing it. Its renewed a lost love of that riding that I first fell in love with. So yes, I get EXACTLY what you mean.

A couple years ago we were through Ajo on our way to Organ Pipe campground. Stopped at Olsens grocery store on the north end of town. BEST carne asada I've ever tasted!
Love the new camping/small bike content. As we get older we find we have nothing to prove, put our ego aside and want to get back to just having fun. Big bikes definitely have their place but small bikes really allow you to stop and smell the roses 🌹.

I always like your videos. This one especially. I’m 68 now and started my two wheel journey in 1972. Outside of Tucson on a Ducati 450 Desmo. I’ve been on almost every size, style and brand over the years. Living in the Appalachian foothills I’ve scaled down to a klr650 for backroads and dirt roads. I’m sure as the year roll on I’ll downsize more. Kind of back to my roots with simple singles. I hope to return to southern Arizona soon via two wheels and backroads.

Thanks for the video. I was recently in the area on my trip west riding close to the Border. I road 86 to Why from Tucson. Then south on 85, the road you took to get tp the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, to Lukeville where I crossed into Mexico to continue my way west on MX-2. The scenery and solitude on the whole area is fantastic.
Back to the roots. That little Honda makes you feel like 16 again. It's not about competition, who has the largest, most powerful, fastest bike, best equipment. I found the same feelings on my innocent Beta Alp 200. Cheers from Nürnberg, Günter

Take that van your woman & some bikes to the AMA mid Ohio vintage days event this fall. The largest vintage motorcycle event in the USA. It is something that every motorcyclist must experience. Just bought two more new off road bikes just for it.
I started riding at 18 with a Honda CL90. My most recent bike was a BMW R1100r. You notice I didn’t say last bike because at 69 years old I have my eye on a new Honda XR150 to put on a carrier on my van when I go camping. Thanks for the inspiration.
Just my 2 cents ... The CT125 shines on nostalgia, low weight/seat-height, EFI & abs. The XR150 shines on low weight/seat height, longer suspension travel, better ground clearance, wheel size (19" up front) and thickness, more power, higher top speed and lower price!
The latter has been available here in South Africa since 2015 (my model) Since retirement in 2020, it's been my everyday rider, Beginner instruction bike and closer to home Adventure bike. It's done about 15000 trouble-free miles and has not yet been to a dealership, thanks to easy DIY maintenance.

I've always ridden 250-350 cc dual sports but wanted something a bit more tame so for my 60th birthday I bought a G310GS and while not perfect, it's probably the best production bike for me because I take back road and mild off road adventures, but I can definitely see the attraction of the Trail 125. They're great little unpretentious go anywhere bikes, as long as you aren't in a hurry, which I'm not.
I am so glad to hear you share the joys of a small bike. I have a BMW R1250RS for street and a KTM 390 Adventure. However, it is so fun to get on the 390 for street. Small, lighter, and so much less power, yet it's a complete joy to ride. Nothing wrong with small.

Analog bikes is the term I like to use. Dirt biking graduating to the latest/greatest-then jumping onto Honda XR75 pit bikes w/ your buddies for some real fun! Went to San Felipe, Baja there was a group of RVers that all had tricked out Trail 90's to Bar hop on. Anyone in California would love the Kennedy Meadows / Kernville area on trail bikes/dual sports. Great viddy, as always.
My first motorcycle was a Honda trail 90 with leading link front fork suspension. This was in 1968 and I miss that bike after watching your episode. I’ve got a 1200 GS and 650 Dakar, both of which make me feel overbiked on many of my rides.
glad to see your getting well from your injury Sterling .i havent been able to ride since i went to Big Sur in early August. I had ACDF surgery then febuary was Rotator cuff surgery I have not been able to do what you are doing and i always enjoy your films

When it comes to enjoying and falling in love with the small bike…you’re preaching to the choir! I love my small bike, crf250l, and even tho tons of people tell me “you can’t do that, you can’t do this” “you’ll out grow it” I couldn’t be happier with it and do everything on it. From gnarly single track to full on multi day adventures.
I wish the ct125 was available where I live. I’d enjoy having one in my stable for sure 👍🏻

The bigger more expensive motorcycles are amazing. The power, speed, and sophisticated traction control and braking, make for an incredibly capable machine. But, small motorcycles are more fun.
I absolutely despise the “Nanny” controls. It takes away from developing riding skills.
My R3TFC is the evolution of everything who ever needs.
But… I really… I will never forget my first one Simson KR 50, ‘70. Yes we’re being poor, but happy…

That Honda looks like the ideal off road bike for me ! I haven't had a bike a a daily driver for over 45 years. I bought a r1100rt and it's even better than my first bike way back in the dayt. It's 43 degrees and raining here in WA. Sure would be nice to feel 72. Cheers !!

I got an Indian Roadmaster and that thing has a kerb weight of over 400kg 😮. I am 60 and dropped it twice last year in my 7 years of ownership. I think the universe if trying to tell me something. Also last year I got a steal of a deal at an auction and ended up with a sub 200kg Honda CB500X.
I am starting to realise that this small bike has a ton of advantages over my big bike. When I get off my Indian and jump on the Honda it feels like a bicycle, so light, I get 500Km out a tank, it uses 91 fuel (that's I believe 87US), insurance, rego, parts and maintenance are cheaper etc etc....and most importantly I can take this thing on unpaved roads and if I drop it I can lift it without breaking a sweat (probably as I have not dropped it yet)

I've "downsized" my motorcycle (#12) to a 411cc Himalayan and my wife as also bought an Himalayan. We now are going to trailer them with our modest motorhome to a basecamp and ride around from there. No highways , just secondary roads and trails to finally go where we always wanted to go anyway. More nature, more sites, more freedom, more relaxing, etc. Downsizing can in fact be more! And I love my little ct110cc Honda (1982)

I have an Africa Twin here at home in Canada, and a KLR in storage in the US that I fly down to and ride a couple weeks a year. When I’m on the KLR, I never feel like I’m missing my more tricked out, powerful gadget and tech laden ride at home. It’s just fun to ride and enjoy for what it is. I get what you’re saying, sometimes less is more. That being said, a 701 is in my future.
I have a 1200, 701 and a little 125. It’s a pretty good mix.

Its all perspective. 3.45 hours from Bisbee to Ajo. Do you like driving cars, I dont. Interstate friendly offroaders, to me, are the end goal.
What a great video encompassing all of the things I too love to do. I really feel connected to the experience itself when I watch your videos, great work. I love to see that your lady friend seems to enjoy the same activities as yourself, that's rare, so enjoy it thoroughly for the rest of us haha.
I am still trying my damnedest to fall in love with my CT 125 but after a year and a half it just hasn't happened yet. I am currently planning a two day mini-moto ADV trip on which I plan to ride the Trail and camp off of it. Hopefully after that trip it'll make more sense as to why it belongs in my stable long term.
I find that the CT125 works best for rides that you can do directly from your house into the trails (if you live in a place like that) or like I do - transport it in my other vehicle. In any case, I don't think it would do as well if I had to ride it long distance to get to the fun stuff. We'll see, I haven't tried that yet :-) But I really do love it on the smaller, tighter trails.
@@SterlingNoren Yea where I live the ride to the trails thing isn't an option haha. I have been tooting around town with it which is fun and I've had it to a few scooter rally rides as well but I have yet to run any real long distance or over night on it. I haven't given up on the CT just yet, I am still trying to let it show me its place before I abandon it haha.

It’s nothing special, really… It’s just an old camcorder camera bag that I had laying around and it seemed to fit pretty well. It’s made by a tripod company called Manfrotto.
You seem to be reading my mind lately, Sterling! My hips are not what they used to be, and though I sometimes regret selling the GSPD, I look forward to shorter, lighter bikes… or maybe a third wheel??
We all grow older, get injured, or simply just want to mix things up a bit. Nothing wrong with trying out different bikes or different styles of riding.

Love the video and the bikes. My wife and I have a pair of Honda Monkeys. I was wondering what mounting bracket you used to mount your gps to your 125? Would like to do something similar with our Monkeys.
I use the Garmin Zumo mount that attaches to the handlebar. It is similar to a RAM mount system.
