Some history your viewers may find interesting, Usal Road simply means USA Lumber, the company that used to harvest the redwood trees. The beach you were on was once a thriving lumber mill with a population of several thousand, a school, a church, and at least two saloons! Hard to imagine that now that everything is gone.
Your travels are like a meditation session and a breath of fresh air for me.
So true!
15 minutes of watching Sterling and I feel like I took a mini vacation. Transported to my last moto adventure. It's surreal.
How can you not enjoy it, not possible. Another top video.
we used to do this in a 36 hp VW...60 years before anybody ever uttered the words "adventure motorcycle". hell, it's not the bike.. it's what you do with it. when you are next to the fog horn when it shakes you to your bones... and you cant see 5 feet in front of you for the for... you've got yourself a memory.
We just called them Sportys in those days
Your aerial videos are spectacular and add so much to your story, they truly capture the grandeur of the Lost Coast. Just don’t tell anybody, let’s keep it lost!
Been riding this area many years now, looks like you must've hit Usal beach on a weekday, it gets incredibly crowded on a weekend nowadays. If you didn't know, it's not necessary to get on hwy 101 to connect Needle Point to Usal beach, if you want more dirt....of course it has to be the right time of year though as it is seasonal.
From your campsite to USAL Beach is a super nice dirt road "USAL road" I'm shocked you skipped it, its a super fun and beautiful ride. I was there two weeks ago! USAL Beach is a disappointment in terms of human waist and trash, sad for such a beautiful place.
Hopefully people will start to care more for it in the future.
Absolutely stunning. I lived in Northern California for 22 years, have ridden Hwy 1 many times on my VFR800. Now I need to go back on an Africa Twin. Well done and cheers.👍
Way to go Sterling! Great location and content.
Another good one!
Another great video. Your attention to detail and videography make your channel stand out. I know the time and effort involved in setting up a shot, shooting it, then editing, adding music and narrating voice over is a TON of work. Add in multiple cameras and a drone, and you barely have time to eat. 😊
I ride ADV but just locally in North Idaho, so I am all armchair traveler when I watch (and share) your work 🙌🏻👍🏻🇺🇸😎 ride safe
you sure do find the nicest roads! thanks for taking us along
Thank you for the great video. I really enjoyed it. Wish I could be there lost my Harley Davison to tornado in Illinois in 2003 and having able to get one sense! You’re riding for me thank you.😊
Really enjoyed this series. I cant stay away from the Lost Coast. Went through there for the first time in 2021, on my way back from MOA rally in Montana. Camped off Mattole Road. Next time was 2022, on a big loop of California. Stayed in Crescent City and Garberville. Had planned to return in 2023, but health issues interfered. Now planning to spend an entire week up there in June this year...not only the coast, but deep into Shasta-Trinity.
Very well done Sterling!
Your videos are so watchable and enjoyable. Thanks for taking the time.
Sterling! Like you my wife and I loved riding the PCH! The scenery is just beautiful. Coming from Pennsylvania and East, you don't see scenery like this and the ocean water is soooo Blue compared to the Atlantic ocean. Nice work!!
Thank you for your quality content! Your advice of camping gear helps me very well. Thx for that you inspire me to make great footages for channel. I know, it's very hard work to make good content. You are very professional videomaker!
I live in the SF Bay Area of CA and appreciate discovering this route due to your video. Even though I raced motocross and desert in the vintage days, I'm new to ADV riding. So I worry about taking some of those incredible dirt roads you show.
These videos are relaxing and invigorating at the same time. Thank you for sharing your travels with us. I'm mostly squeezing in day rides now but have some longer ventures planned. I like ultralight motorcycle camping, but your videos are making me want to take a drone on my trips.
Next time you are there go hike to the candelabra trees. It’s just out of camp and absolutely mesmerizing. Never seen anything like it. .
This looks like a really nice ride. Added to the list for a KLR 650 trip.
Punta Gorda (next to Mattole Beach) is my best spot on Lost Coast. Stop by next time!
I love Usal Beach! Thanks for sharing
Happy Birthday, Sterling.🙂
It's videos like this that inspire people to go on motorcycle adventures.
Nothing like a good motorcycle, beans and tuna and an ocean view. Good vid. I hope many more get to see this for themselves.
Note that USAL beach... on a prime summer weekend... is busy. Usual stuff. Drunks, loud music, dope, parties, etc etc etc.
At the north end of the beach area, the USAL road (dirt) road runs about 25 miles. It goes all the way from the USAL beach up to '4 Corners'. 4 Corners is the place where you came out of Needle Rock road (Sinkyone Wilderness) and took the Whitethorn road back to civilization (ala Briceland).
Both times I was up there, 2021 and 2022, the road was closed due to washouts. Planning a week-long stay in the area for this June so who would be best to contact in advance to get information of road state? Thanks!
We are lucky you captured footages of those beautiful places & shared it with the rest of us. Most of us do not know those places are there and are accessible. We would have lived full lifetimes not having gotten to see those places.
Are there tracks for this ?
Happy Birthday Sterling! I hope you have a great day sir!
Ive been riding coastal and back country coast roads for lots of years, Ive been on this route many times.
Of course if you come up from Needle Point, take a right and your on the north end of Usal rd....its 25 miles end to end and is rougher on the northern half by far.
Usal beach campground, I think they gave up on having bathrooms there, people use various campsites as a bath room
The weekends can be extremely full, they have raves there, and huge parties with bands and etc..
Weekdays are a much better bet. Can still be a lot of people.
Those old growth tree stands in the Redwood are some of my favorite to stop and take in. Although I will stop at any good looking old growth tree stand. There's something about being near the energy of those big old trees that makes you feel good.
Glad I discovered your channel. Beautiful locations! Getting ready to swap my Bonneville with a Tiger 1200 Rally. Absolutely love the T120, but the Tiger will fit the way I want to ride much better (longer trips, light off road). Moved back to So Cal after living abroad for over two decades and want to re-discover all the west coast and Calif has to offer (Sacramento area was my second home growing up, Shingle Springs area). Also enjoy going out to Death Valley and other more inland routes in cooler weather.
This is where scenery and cliffs don't mix😮
Great video thank you very well done thanks for taking us along cheers to ya.
Sterling, you never cease to amaze! I’m glad I got to have a few beers with you at the Jonquil … I hope you and Eva are doing fine! Keep up the good work my friend!
I cannot believe I missed u I am on that road every weekend... Darn it ... Hope u had a blast in my backyard. 👍👍
Sterling: "It's a bit like a jungle here"
Itchy Boots: "Hold my beer"
Your videos of this trip are making me think about getting a GS - an older one, at least - because they are so versatile and surprisingly nimble and well-balanced for its weight. Thanks for taking us along and sharing your camping expertise.
I live on the west coast of BC i know what you are saying every coast line has a different show never the same . Thanks for sharing the beauty !!
Fort Bragg to Willits on Sherwood road is a fun one too.
My home territory...more or less...I would say this is a good representation . In winter Usal road is likely to be closed or extremely difficult.
What an awesome ride! I want to ride up the cost soon, ill have to locate this route. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for these stunning ocean views. Living in the Appalachian mountains, I really appreciate how you capture these views that I may never see in real life. I also agree that when the pavement ends, so does 95% of the traffic. Thanks again.
Love watching your vlog, esp. your narration, very refreshing to see the beauty of nature, watching your vlog is
Like a breath of fresh air indeed
You have some of the best musical accompaniments in your videos, Sterling. Great job and musical ear ! The songs picked really just add a lot to the beauty of the videos. I had to stop and rewind and 'shazam' them a few times to I could add them to my library!
Usal Road: What a jolly nice trail with views of the ocean. Pity it's a bit further away than just 'round the corner ;-) Günter/Nürnberg
From Usal beach, continue north to Ferndale.
I just got my first GS! I hope to get out that way after I finish workin' for the man. I love your videos. Thanks Sterling!
Thank you Sterling.....Great video, as usual!!! All the best from Canada
Just stunning
Another motorcycle ride jewel! 💎
Ваша англійська гарно сприймається на слух, для тих, кому вона не є рідною.
Якісна картинка, доповненна цікавими розповідями.
🖐🇺🇦
Man I've been curious to some things as many prolly have but haven't asked... I'm reluctant to even drop the question but since I'm a no body here in the great world of you tube, here it goes. Ha!
What tyoe of socks, boxers, under shirts does Mr Sterling wear? What do you guys wear when beating the hard roads and camping multiple weeks like he did on his last 50+ day trip to Canada?
I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING stopping me from making more long distance trips on my gsa but for some reason I continue to come up with more things i "need" before making the next step. What type of drone does he have (not that it's an item on my wish list) that can follow him without banging into all those limbs?
Was this video done with the go pro or his new set up?
Anyway, love his travels and his professionalism and all his hard work that goes into making these videos.
Such beautiful scenery, enjoy watching the movie.
Did the same trip in 2018 from the U.K. bike shipped with me thanks for bringing back great memories
Thanks Sterling. Bliss.😀
Another great one Sterling..
Riden through that area.
It's beautiful.
Thank you
Wow. Amazing scenery!
Top of my list. Just wait for it to dry out after the rains. The G650gs should be just right.
Great work Stirling 👍👍👏👏👏
Such great content every time
Love it, great video I'm going to have to go visit sometime soon ❤
Fantastic...thanks Sterling
So looking forward to next episode
Mark
Amazing drone shots. As usual. I appreciate all your hard work.
Always look forward to your new adventures, and now I look forward to Sundays for new content. lol Awesome as usual! Stay safe during Hilary.
Another simply spectacular video.
Masterful filming with incredible scenery and riding - thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Beautiful country! Thanks Sterling!
Thanks, Sterling!
Enjoy brother 👍🏻 and it looks like you are 😎🍻
Thank you for all the hard work of filming, editing and uploading this great video.
Was very cool to see and loved the drone shots mixed in.
Love it so much! Greeting From Indonesia
Awesome
Beautiful area. Thanks for showing it to us.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your journey.
Another video well done. Living the best life! Cheers!
Thanx4post
Spectacular as always Sterling!
Beautiful trip and love your videography of all of this . Keep it coming !
Great roads you’re sharing again!
Wow! I enjoyed this episode! Thank you! 🙏
Nice!
Love your content and storytelling. I do get saddened when these roads become well known and trashed like during the COVID times. Wi fee if there is a way to tell the story without inviting the masses. The fishing content creators have this down to a science.
It's ok...nobody is going take away your roads! Most Americans are lazy slobs, they aren't going run out on the bike and ride your roads.
Hi Sterling,
I'm new on your channel and I really like your solo motorcycle adventure rides. I'm planning to explore the Lost Coast dirt trail & highway routes for couple days. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Gery
Hey Stirling , Greetings from the South Coast of the Untied Kingdom
Thanks for another great video and thank you for taking the time to bring us some amazing trips and adventures from the back roads of America 👌, you guys are so lucky with the open spaces and wilderness that you have , it is what Adventure bikes were invented for 👍
Can I ask what tyres you are currently running with on the mighty GS ?
Stay safe and well 👌👍👊
Sterling, thanks for another great video! I’m curious about your monopod setup. Have you gotten to a point you’re satisfied with it? The one you had on your AZ to BC trip, attached to your pannier, seemed very stable with its two mounting points. I can’t quite make out if your current variation is connected at one point or two. I’m very interested in replicating your monopod idea. Any chance you’ll be doing a video on it? Thanks again.
Great content. Looking forward to more.
Another great Ep! 😊
Thanks for the video but you leave out some important info as in where are these roads? Would have been nice to know where and how to find these locations with some geographical info other than the “lost coast” and north of Fort Bragg
Where exactly is this place? I definitely want to do a trip here
Expect fog in summer on Hwy 1 on calif coast.
are those waters icy? I'm not used to foggy ocean beaches in...kenya.
Could you please tell me your GoPro and your drone settings ??
Really nice, I've always been in to much of a hurry. Are all these roads public access?
Being in too much of a hurry, is a very common thing to happen on long motorcycle trips. Yes, all of these roads are public access.
If you have an old trail 90, you can have just as much fun and go just as fast as you will on an beemer. I'm lucky to have one, but if I didn't I wouldn;t let that stop me. Any small bike will do.
I’m lucky that I have a new Honda Trail 125!
thanks for your video! ive wanted to go down usal for a while but i only have a small kia hatchback with low under clearance.. the road looks in decent shape in your video, do you think I could pull it off going slowly and dodging ruts?
Oh, that might be kind of challenging. It’s not a particularly difficult road, but there are definitely some rats and dips and rocks.
How do you get there???
Great video - why didn’t you ride Usal Road south from Whitethorn to Usal Beach?
It was closed
@@SterlingNoren Thanks!
Closed just means you get the road to yourself...The gate is easy to go under on a bike...
What tires are u running ?
