Interesting to see Andrea Suarez getting her roots in Battlebots, years before she'd find success with Witch Doctor.

This is cool seeing Battlebots in this in between state. It's looking more like the modern show while still having aesthetics of the Comady Central show. They still even use the middle weight class.

Under modern rules, that last fight is all Category 5 - Triton never used its active weapon. Watching that match made me appreciate the rule change.
Thomas Geraci shut the fuck up about that stupid ass rule. All it causes is trohblex It encourages and changes nothing except using a spinner, as a weapons existance encourages its use.
The exception is if youre talking specific matchups like horizontals vs clamps without a wedge in front. In which cause youre not using that or youre dying, no in between.
It makes for poor competition, i understand putting in you can only have active weapons, but if you have a bot that dont have a way to use a
weapon effectively against certain matchups then you failed at *s e l e c t i o n* not at judging.
And if something goes wrong, well you lost damage aggression and the match as long as the weapon touches you and you can make some attempt at aggression at all.
A wedge is a good but boring design
fast forward to 2020 and it happened again , judges voted a win for a bot that spent 1/2 the match not using its weapon , and then it was ripped off by the bot the judges voted to lose . i think they have a certain bias judge .
@@mazda2284 Beta won that fair and square, salty Spinner Kiddie. Outside of *one* lucky glancing hit that was by accident and didn't affect the performance at all, Rotator was completely embarrassed. It's like you expect spinners to be entitled to an automatic win just because they turned up and switched on the weapon.
I think that the modularity and attachments are what I have problem with.
It is almost like making various robots instead of balancing pros and cons, possibly making something that would normally be disadvantageous in most circumstances, but then you make something that is just for one specific opponent.

It’s not fair to consider Cat 5’s weapons weapon failure, since Triton didn’t even have a weapon to disable!
Obviously annoying the wedge bot wins but you gotta credit with them building solidly, unlike all the previous bots Cat5 faced who disintegrated in one weapon on weapon hit.
yeah it is very annoying to see a wedge who never uses their weapon, but credit where credit is due, the bot is solid

Like Cat 5 vs Gigabyte.
Maybe even Triton (wedge only) vs Duck, although Duck retired.
Keep seeing battlebots champions when they were young
Category 5 absolutely tore Jailbreak to shreds.
That curved plow on Triton is just so good at deflecting any spinning weapon attacks, drivers really needed to just get around and get even one hit on the side of the robot. During that whole match Category 5 never hit anything but Triton's plow, if it had it would have been a very different outcome.
This appears to be the exact same wedge design Donald Hudson uses on his current lockjaw robot.
That girl from Bradley seemingly signalling the driver to spin in place as a last ditch effort after the weapon was lost, was some praise-worthy quick thinking. However, the rest of their stuff was hard to watch. Why did the driver ram the bot into the wall? Why would you drop the pulverizer on your own bot? Maybe it's nerves, but it seems like they have not prepared at all.

I wish episode 2 was locatable somewhere out there.

Then yes....if you haven't driven it at weight fully assembled, it's the first time you've driven it.
How the tech inspector made it through that entire thing without biting his tongue off from biting it so hard is a miracle

Category 5 was the only decent bot out there. It's a shame you can win by making a snow plowing bot and do nothing other that drive around.

Loved them all I say from what I saw of Category 5 was awesome that were a mean battlebot and great battle.
The filler between fights here is way more fun here than in modern BattleBots.

Towards the final battle Triton did good think Category 5 still did their best efforts. Good battle for what I thought of it.
I genuinely prefer this old format over the new episodes. It has so much more charm!

I used to watch around this era of BB as a kid. I have a model of Ronan and he's still with me to this day.
I will have to look for the episodes involving some of my favorites, especially SubZero, my king.
It's great to see this in such high quality too, considering how other videos (including from other BB teams) are usually in horrible quality and are otherwise hard to see and hear what's going on.
Of course, those may be from the Comedy Central era.
Ouch: I instinctively recoiled in horror when I saw that square grid frame during the autodesk add at around 8 minutes, I knew better playing with friggin' Duplo as a toddler! it amazes and horrifies me how something like that can progress through hundreds of hours of what amounts to prototype production.
I do wish they included more of the building/designing in the show, there's all sorts of fluff piece and filler commentary in there they could trade for it. Just to be clear it *_does_* serve a purpose to include a few other things in the show than just the fights, I just wish there was more of the interesting stuff that actually goes into all this in what they choose to include to fill that role in the presentation structure of the show
okay, does youtube force autocorrupt on whatever you type or something? I hit enter on that, re-entered sort-newest to refresh and double check it, and now it's got several words replaced with similar ones.
this is not even remotely an isolated incident, though it's rare for it to be right where I'm looking when I do it (wish->with, my eyes were on "they")
messed it up a different way when editing it, tried playing around with re-editing the message a few times and it looks like it is doing a combination of re-inserting deleted stuff when compiling what it actually posts from the action log in the work area before you hit save and, yes, running spellcheck/autocomplete and possibly a censor filter over the thing before actually posting it, between compiling errors and forced autocorrupt it's pulling word replacements and plopping in/out entire sections if you are moving stuff around with copy-paste/etc.
Agreed there was a few bots this tournament that made me very concerned that these people are most likely now engineers lol
@@54raceman looking back on that now I think it might have actually had a lot to do with the program that they were trying to advertise: it did NOT do curves well even in the user interface, let alone the prediction tools they were talking about.
that's why you saw triangles in everything that had to be engineered with precise tolerances up until surprisingly recently: strongest shape they could effectively do the math for so you'd see much the same engineering go into a making a thing whether it was the cut-and-paste design of a sherry's restaurant or a friggin' space shuttle...still no excuse for making that thing out of a bunch of unbraced rectangles though: almost nothing is supported and you either have good angles on all the joins or you have isolated application to a weak point, you could quite literally tear that bot apart with your bare hands in a couple minutes.
heh: doubly so since there had been a couple preset pattern variants for "I want to make this thing strong" since before any of the event organizers were born, let alone the kids competing.
Nice to go back and see just how far this sport has come. The dedication must be there or you'll be picking up battery packs and bearings at fight's end.

"Why do we build fighting robots?" because we like to build. Fighting robots don't last long, so we are constantly building more, and building better.
In the finals, triton was a loser of a robot. it did win, but with a loser's attitude of trying to simply survive, without any attempt of active attacks, heck they didnt have any weapon worth calling a primary weapon. I only give it credit for being a well-built defensive robot with a solid wedge to fend of attacks.
Hugely entertaining, but looking back on this from the giddy heights of 2023, I'm amazed that the engineering of BattleBots of 2011 (or thereabouts) had devolved so much from Robot Wars of 1998-2002. Chaos 2, Hypno-Disc et al vs any of this motley band would have cleaned up. If ever there was a lesson in learning from history.
some rules are just weird - metal robotic machines designed to move fast smash bash and wreck each other - and your worried about a little sharp edge ?!
