Why do some of the soapbox racers a driver and a second occupant, while others only have a driver? Wouldn't the weight of another person make the car slower?
A second person would make the car faster. The car is propelled by gravity so more weight means more inertia for maintaining speed through the corners and over jumps.
I think the switch to those small, chonky wheels is the secret to strength in a lot of these builds! Mesmerizing to watch, impossible to keep a straight face :)
Yup. Wheelbarrow wheel, blown up to hell. Strong enough and small enough contact patch for low rolling resistance. Another option is scooter wheel, practically indestructible, but very expensive.
I was thinking the ax in the Lumberjack looked dangerous, and sure enough, it dislodged and hit the driver... great job throwing it away without losing control.
To even be accepted into the race every car design has to be easily destructible. Meaning they already design with the intent for these vehicles to come apart and not be a danger to the driver. Many people don't even enter the race with the goal of winning, they just want the best destruction out of all the others. That's why some are designed to leave a trail behind them of parts and others are designed to change shape with extendable wings that serve no function whatsoever other than to eventually fold down and give a new appearance to the cart until they're eventually detached by an impact. It's all just part of the show.
