For what the Prius is and is trying to be I am very impressed with it. The Prius is not trying to be some sort of driving performance icon, it's trying to be an efficiency icon with a bit of fun, and it's doing that perfectly.
Tell that to some Prius Drivers. I've run into a few that thought they were driving the fastest car on the road.🤣🙄
@@gonedeep43 well, it is faster than basically every crossover, so there's that.
Volt was funner and nicer
@@LordWaterBottle Yeah, but not faster than those cars that are meant to go fast. That was my point. I've had Prius drivers roll up on me like they were driving a Hellcat.🤣🤣🙄
@@Joe-kx7bl A Volt??🤣🤣🤣
Fortunately case didn’t need to sell his corvette and is $40 richer, i like seeing these old vs new races
You $40,000?
I’m glad. Those Priuses aren’t worth tuning than vettes
Now I want a vette more than ever
The thing that impressed me the most about this video? Is that the air conditioning and the corvette still works!!
AC is actually a very simple system and it's easy to troubleshoot. No reason it shouldn't work, probably been overhauled. I have a 1988 and a 97 and both are southern trucks, AC works / been converted from 12 to 134
@@bldontmatter5319you can still get 12 ;)
The AC in my 85 still works, 134A converted too. The ac in my daily currently is broken but yet the AC in my C4 works, what a tragity 🤣
I had a 88 and it was a very tough car. I Dont know why this corvette is so slow..mine was a auto it ran high 13's in a quarter mile. It had the Z51 suspension and a 3.55 gear but this car should be a little faster than that.
@@cnewell1971 I should be good for a 13.6 down the quarter, ran an 8.7 1/8th with a 1.87 '60 foot. 3.07 rear end, and minor bolt ons
Prius; "i get 57 MPG what do you get?"
Trans Am; "Laid"
Facts!!!!
The Tran am would get over 30 plus mpg.
Toyota just boring and there technology is always 5 years behind
I think I've got a few Prius's to pick out of the Raptor's grill probably what's dropped my MPG from 17 to 15.
@@johnh9604 Toyota's technology is always 5 years behind?
Do you really believe that? or you have been living under the rock for two decades?
Not in today’s generation. . .
Let's wait for the GR Prius 😂 this was fun!
Possibly 34% more horsepower and 10X the battery capacity compared to the 2023 standard Prius 👍
Rav4 Prime powertrain would be wonderful for this
Wow they are going to make a GR Prius? That should be interesting haha
There are so many things that TA needs. A tuneup, tires, some basic bolt ons, and a driver mod
...and about 1 mile less in altitude.
Driver mod being the most important
Guy in trans am to heavy
The TA is a 4 speed auto. All that needs to be said.
It's an LT1. It was only rated at 275 hp.
Great fun!
I'd be really interested to see a dyno on that TA and then perhaps a nice tune up before testing again.
Headed to the shop friday!
I'm excited to see it getting a tuneup but I think its mostly driver mod to be honest. Its trapped as high as 92-94 i think and still runs 16s. 92-94 mph should net a low 15 on a unprepped surface and 14.5 on a track. 92-94 mph at that altitude means it would be upper 90s-100 at a more typical altitude which is fairly typical for a healthy LT1.
The TA needs another driver!
I trap 92-94 and turn a 14.4-14.5 at bandimere. Math checks out.
@@jdsgnIf you watch the video where Tommy raced the TA, his time was actually even slower. I think it's more than just the driver. Either that car has issues or their equipment runs slow times or maybe both.
C4 is really the first great handling track Corvette in factory trim. The C3 corvettes were good but more of a touring car from the factory.
Really cool comment. Felt like smoking a cig with one foot up on the wall.
Thats is laughable as there are many many c3 wins vs almost none in the c4 platform
@@gabrielcollazo6835 the C4 Corvette was banned for being too good, it had to create its own series

C4s looking mighty fine these days
Cheap also.
@@marcoarreola9058getting more expensive every month
@@yyeezyy630 yup. There is always something that needs work also. It's to be expected from a 30 plus year old car. 🔧🔧👍😀
Case’s car may just be one of the most impressive C4’s I’ve personally seen (well, standard C4’s anyway). He consistently performs much better than I expect. It doesn’t hurt that he genuinely seems to be one of the best drivers of the regular TFL crew…
I know right? I wonder if its stock… I own one 88 too and not sure if I can win against a 305hp Trans Am
With the 350 you should be able to be a 305 any day stock vs stock
Those old TPI 305 and 350’s had a lot of low and mid range torque. Not as much HP as the LT1’s but a better low and possibly mid range torque curve.
@@TexasPatriotOffRoadAndOutdoors very true they sorta suffocated and had a problem getting air flow in the higher rpms
@@Ryan-dj7ry yea, if I remember correctly, that intake setup ran out “juice” around 5,000 to 5,500 RPM.
I had a 91’ 305 TPI, 5 speed manual Camaro, metered by speed density (vs mass air), that ran pretty decent (for the time lol). I had a Crane Cams Compu-Cam, injectors out of an LT1, an Edelbrock “big mouth” lower intake with Siamesed runners (can’t remember brand), fuel pressure regular, pulleys, 2.5” y-pipe to a single 3” exhaust and 3” in/out Flowmaster muffler (all mandrel bent) and finally switched to a 4.10 gear (from 3.42).
My best quarter mile pass at Houston Raceway Park was 14.1 @ 101 MPH. Never clocked it with a 125 HP shot of nitrous but my guess woulda been a high 12 second pass.
Prior to the gear swap, my top speed was 153 MPH (took about 2 miles if I remember correctly). This was in 5th gear at 5,500 RPM. The car had a reputation for being a highway monster. Ironically, the car was a former Texas Department of Public Safety patrol unit with a certified speedometer. (So I’m guessing my top speed was accurate).
I really miss that car, I had a lot of fun times in it.
That says a lot about a 35 year old Corvette. At 5000ft elevation!
Also that LT1 should be looked at, it even audibly sounds unusually sluggish compared to others. That or get the vette guy to drive it, easily the best driver here
Yep needs some ignition or fuel work, and/or Driver Mod. That LT1 should be much quicker.
The 88 vettes had the slower L98 not LT1
@@JL-qe7of We’re talking about the Trans Am.

Really good stuff--and that C4 seems like the fun bargain of the year!
the C4 the older it gets the greater it looks
C5 looks better imo

I sure hope so with my 1994 sitting in the garage. Parts are so cheap to get the interior back to mint I am considering redoing it.
C4, the official car of, "No Lowballers! I know what I got."
@@Josh-kp8si Every Corvette is a unique snowflake special edition...They only made a few with this color and interior and carpet blah blah.
Holy crap, Brendan is actually starting to get better at driving! Love the guy but driving is NOT one of his innate talents. Still, that launch was a mile better than whatever he was doing in that last race in the Firebird!
He launches that TA like an old lady. Still not doing that LT1 justice lol
He probably doesn't want to blow up the rear end! The 6 speeds were known to chew them up.
Yes better this time than the Accord race. On the street though sometimes a hard launch just results in a wheel spinning mess.
That Pontiac had a lot more weight to haul... both in the body and inside the cabin...
I'm surprised the Prius even got that close TBH! That's pretty good. I hope Toyota ramps up production the next year!
You better believe they'll throttle production, extend waiting times and slap on inflation inducing profits , especially the dealerships.
Those old TPI (tuned port injected) 305 and 350’s, like in the C4, had a lot of low and mid range torque. Not as much HP as the LT1’s but a better low and possibly mid range torque curve.
No, it doesn’t actually. It makes so much more power that it’s literally ahead at every point in the dyno runs
@@yyeezyy630 you think the old TPI is stronger across the rev range than the LT1’s?
I always thought TPI ran out of steam around 4,500 RPM
I had a 95 trans am years ago and it would run a 13.7. Bone stock
It is a "Corvette" for a reason. If you look at each generation at the time when they originally came out, they were as fast or faster than the competition at thousands less.
Had a C4 in my early twenties loved that car always surprised me how quick it was. Love the black with the turbine wheels! Keep up the videos great series
American muscle forever. That Comp TA is beautiful.
Alright C4!! I'd love to see a comparison between the L98 C4 and a LT4 C4.
Lt4 would beat it by counties.
Not even a comparison but fun to see the generational improvements
Would have eaten that Prius. LT4 350 was a runner
Why didn't you bring the Prime? You brought the slowest version of the Prius.
Because we almost never have a choice of what the companies bring us
@@TFLclassics Fair
The also brought the slowest versions of those body style vettes and ta’s so all is fair.
the fbody did come with a slower v6
It's still guy either way...
My dad still drives an old 2009 Prius. He uses it as the company car because it’s great for commuting between his business’s various office locations. Honestly they’re great little cars, and are ridiculously cheap to maintain. We’ve had the car since 2009 and it’s never needed any parts replaced or anything! As of right now it has 351,000 km on it (218101 miles) and it’s somehow still going strong on the original battery. Sure, it’s underpowered, but it sure saves you money on repairs and fuel.
Damn that trans am and vette looked good going across the finish line!
Those wheels on the C4 corvette look so darn good. Classy look
I would guess that the Prius did fairly well against the Formula and the Corvette in the slalom track because it's suspension is new and the other two cars have worn out shocks/struts and bushings.
Not to mention the driver in the ta was trash, that ta should have easily beaten the vette
I knew corvette was gonna win, but now we have a video evidence that an 80s sportscar is still better than the 2020s disposable car))
3300 lbs is pretty impressive for a new vehicle, particularly one with an EV battery in it. Still heavier than the vette, though.
Dont know about the new one, but the old one had a ridiculously small battery compared to any EV, like not much bigger capacity than an ordinary 12v starter battery.
The old ones could only go like 30 miles at 50 mph with the electric only mode.
Having a manual in an old muscle car is key to putting the power down...
Not for those years. The trans am with the auto 275 hp (25 less then the one used) did 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the converter auto did it in just over 6
Prius is Latin for "holding up traffic in the left lane".😅
They actually pick very cleanly out of my F150's grill.
@@gsxr1189 😂
C4 is finally getting the recognition it deserves after being treated like the red-headed stepchild of the Corvette family for so long.
240hp - 330hp is *more* than enough power for the streets. These old pushrod V8's make all the low end torque people love and there is no shortage of it here.
What people often forget about is how well these cars handle in the corners.
They are one of the best looking cars ever made and the interiors look way more interesting than later year 90's GM. The mixture of digital and analog looks really cool, especially with the amber lighting in the revised/updated C4's.
While they are not 400hp machines, they are still some of the best handling cars you can still get for their price range and they feel wonderful to cruise.
For those who aren't familiar with the C4, it received a facelift in1991 but it was also last the last year for the L98 V8. The facelift basically took the ZR1 body and made it standard from '91-'96.
Engines:
Starting with 1987 - Updated L98 with 240hp and ~340 torques (Personally wouldn't get anything before '87 due to having much less HP)
ZR1 Only - LT5 "King of the Hill" 375 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque
1992 - 1996 introduced the LT1 with 300HP and ~330 torques
1996 was the only year for the LT4 (rated at 330 HP and ~340 torque). It came standard with any C4 built with a manual transmission/Grand Sport.
Auto's only came with the LT1 but in 1996, the autos came standard equipped with a 3.07 gear ratio (Performance Axel - Code G44/G92.)
Perfect for cruising.
BTW, you can find what options your car came equipped with by opening the storage lid behind the passenger side. There is a stick affixed underneath the lid. Good way to verify what your C4 came with!
'95 - '96 are the best years for the Optispark as the distributor was "vented" to help with moisture buildup. Not saying you couldn't enjoy a '92-'94 but it is something to keep in mind.
I absolutely love the C4 Corvette. I DD a '96 with an LT1 and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
Trans am needs driver mod
Bingo
He consistently drives like dogsh*t

that pontiac has a hefty driver weight disadvantage tho lol
I just got one of the new Prius’s as a company car a few days ago, it’s actually really impressive. ( the interior is also a lot nicer than the previous version
Has anybody drug tested Tommy recently?
Yeah, 50 mpg, but remember the test that Top Gear ran years ago. They put the prius on track and ran it as fast as they could around the track, with a BMW 3 series (M3?) keeping pace behind. The Prius was trying hard; the BMW driver was yawning. But the point is that the BMW's gas mileage for the track test was better than the Prius.
“Back in the 90s”. I’m so old! Thanks for the fun video!
Very fun. I wonder what the AWD version would do with say P215 or 225 summer tires on it... 🤔
It would get walked at a lower altitude, but up there a mile above the Corvette is choking so it might be a closer race
Not gonna lie. 5:38 I wasn’t certain of the corvette was going to win after watching the trans am struggle lol. Glad you won that drag Chase. Tell Tommy he can suck it lol.
What a great combination of your staff …. Love it
Well, the thing is, any brand new car will be much more "nimble" due to the fact that every part of the suspension is new and tight as well as the fact that modern compounds are used in things like bushings that are not in the older car's components. That said, this old car was very impressive.
How proud he is of his Prius when he said he was doing 53 mpg.
A few years ago i bought a 2005 Jaguar x-type 2 liter for only 500£ and with 130k miles it was doing 53 mpg too.
This is the US, they arent used to those numbers. Dont have any diesels in smaller cars really.
I love the add of the Autocross
I'm starting to really like Kase and that Corvette... That was a good buy ...👏👏👏....
I have a 2008 Mazda 3 2.3L 5 speed. Not the fastest car, but fun in corners. I took an exit ramp in a sporting manner. Checked my mirror and there's a car behind me keeping up. I stay in second and let the engine wind out, and this car behind me is sticking with me.
I was shocked when it was a freaking prius stuck to my bumper through the corner. (They weren't actually that close. I appreciated their driving spirit- it was good fun).
Those things are quick and look good! And get great milage.
I think the result would be very difficult racing at sea level. The high altitude won't affect the electric motor output on the prius. Where as the 2 na cars are losing power with just their gas engines.
They always have such crazy numbers in their tests bc of the high altitude. It really makes it hard to view the results objectively.
Test them when it’s 5 degrees outside and clear. Bye bye battery 👍
The new Prius Prime should make it closer.
"This Prius can out run that corvette"....Come on man,??!!...really??
"Hold my beer"
Maybe if the Prius had a racing stripe or a red toe hook 🤔
American muscle prevails
and a grenade sticker in the back window... oh, and don't forget the fake wing in back that applies downforce on the wrong end of a front wheel drive car when it reaches speeds that it will never achieve.
Im enjoying this new style of races. Fun light hearted. Still Informational and fun to watch. I'd like to see some other things vs that prius and vett. Some regular cars and trucks. No trx or raptors. Instead titan, ram, silverado, f150. Or v6 4 door sedans, like impala, charger. Or modern jeep cherokee, equinox ect ect....Curious only lol
I found the lt1 engine in the transam being realy weak in power if we check the 1/4time i think he need a rebuild or checking the compression because that not normal 16sec for that engine and car. Except he running like 2.73 gear or lower.
You all are having too much fun🤠A coworker had both Corvettes with both engines back in the day, a 1995 LT1 and a 1988 TPI. The TPI felt quicker in low speed traffic, the LT1 would smoke it above 4000 rpm. And--It doesn’t matter how fast the Prius is, they will still be found clogging the left lanes from coast to coast at 2 mph under the posted limit😎
My dynamic trio the goats of tfl. The elite squad. You three are so spectacular phenomenal amazing wholesome people Great video. Tons of fun. Good high note tommy you have been practicing 8:03
I loved how the fudge-packer in the Prius said the c4 vette was gonna lose in the handling section lmao, c4 vettes were banned from SCCA stock GT racing and had to create its own devision because it was blowing the competition out of the water.
Not surprised he didn't know what he was talking about by the way he held that walky-talky.
That Corvette was AWESOME.
I love seeing case on the channel
I happen to have an '88 C4 Corvette automatic. At Pomona Drag Strip it ran a best time of 13.992 @ 102 MPH. It was bone stock except the air filter was removed. Now it sits rotting in my garage because it won't pass California's smog test. With 216,000 miles, I think the engine needs some work. Otherwise, it's been a great car.
I'm surprised that Prius makes that far.
I wonder if Toyota put a Turbo 4 in place of 4 cylinders engine in combination with 2 motors and see what will affected the MPG and Quarter mile. 🙂
Electric has no effect with elevation..Thats why the other 2 cars run 2-3 seconds slower up there than at sea level...Prius has electric power to 40 or so mph then the gas kicks in..
Trans Am of that era run 13's at sea level,Corvette is 14's sea level...I am not a GM fan either.
The TPI engine in that Corvette seems to be running strong for its age. Would be cool to see a test with a 92 SLP Formula Firehawk. It had the modified TPI that left the factory with 350HP and 390 Torque. Unfortunately so little of those cars were actually produced ( about 25 ) that finding one to test would be very difficult and expensive.
Wow. That firehawk sounds freaking awesome. I never knew of such model!!!
@@arodderz Yeah it was a beast! On par in performance with the C4 ZR1 of its day. Unfortunately it’s quite rare and expensive. It sold for around $40k - $50k back in 1992. Think the TA driver was sandbagging a little; Prius got him on launch too. The LT1 should have come out of the hole a lot stronger. Not surprised at the C4 though; exactly what I figured: pretty much all the GM v8s in those days were torque monsters at low RPM, but got wheezy after about 4000 rpm. Also not surprised at the Prius with its hybrid drivetrain and a couple decades of tech on the older cars.
Its amazing that we have Minivans, Camrys and Accords and Civics these days running track times that were muscle car territory 20 - 30 years ago.
Love these comparisons.
EVERYONE ALWAYS disrespects the Prius and the Camry however the Camry XLE V6 may be a better comparison for these old gems of yester century.

It's not just the Prius but also the male feminist driving it that we're laughing at.
@@gsxr1189 on some of the carsites i watch people presenting have no business talking bout cars.

Almost any car feels fast driving around in a low gear. Similar reason go carts can feel so fast even when they top out at 45 mph and take a while to get there. Motors give the sense of faster than what they actually are. When you push the accelerator and get instant torque with a jerk that rise in force is fun... not necessarily fast though.
On the streets the Prius is quicker then, because it took the Corvette more than 6.5s to overtake lol
Like the old vs new races would be interested in similar test with the civic SI and GTI against the Prius
Spoiler alert!!! Not only did the Corvette take off better on the 30 mph roll race, but it also outperformed the Prius while having the Air Conditioner on. Just in case you didn't know.
If I remember correctly, that Tuned Port Injection (TPI) intake on that C4 setup ran out “juice” around 5,000 to 5,500 RPM. That year model of the TPI utilized a mass air flow sensor and didn’t make as much power as the later TPI system that utilized speed density, although mass air responded better to mods.

The Bearded guy can’t drive worth a damn. He doesn’t know how to properly launch it, every time….
He isn’t doing that LT1 any justice at all lol.
Prius are becoming more fast, fun and exciting to drive I love the 2010 in up Prius to new gens in also good on gas
It’s funny to think that a Prius is in the same league as the GT86 and DC2 Integra R in horsepower, despite its expected buyer
Zero soul in that Prius. Anyone who was auto crossing back in the late 90’s early 2000’s knows that the F-Body cars with good tires would do great with a good driver
The fact that the new Prius is now as fast as American muscle from the 80s.
Yeah, at least in my Gen2 Prius, you need to know where your battery is. If it's near full, it will help you a lot. If it's closer to empty, which can happen at any given time, it won't help much at all. It does this on it's own without any input from the driver.
How does Toyota keep making uglier cars??
Could we maybe do a fair weight on the drivers in each car? I mean adding a 100 lbs to the driver makes a difference
Not really, considering the nature of the test. It pales into total insignificance compared to the driver skill.
This was fun to watch. Aren’t they making a Prius Prime? If so, wouldn’t it be faster?
I think the prim just means it's a plugin hybrid.
@@Vacardi that’s true but for the Rav4 it made it their second quickest vehicle.
that LT1 transam must be on it's last leg if it's doing 16s in the 1/4, make sure that you still have all the pistons in the engine since something must be horribly wrong with it
