If there is, in fact, a shortfall, I would love to see the accounting for how much the VA spent on unnecessary C&P exams; the labor costs for adjudicating improperly denied claims in the current and last FY; the costs of those "studies" that resulted in such self-congratulatory events for McDonut; and, the cost of throwing those staged events. I would be extremely surprised if the cost of those things wasn't damn close to the _projected_ shortfall.

    • @TheCivDiv

15,000,000,000% there is a shortfall. Solid thought process though on unwarranted C&P exams and I like it!

It's available in the OIG Reports, "VBA spent about $6.8 million in taxpayer funds on these unwarranted reexaminations". C&P exams cost anywhere from $64, to $1,544 each.

@@TheCivDiv LoL Well, call me skeptical when it comes to _projected_ shortfalls and politicians creating an artificial crisis right before an election to get votes, pad their budgets and slip in totally unrelated items that wouldn't normally pass. 😉 (Seriously, making an issue of this right after recess has begun? Typical congress critter behavior.)
I'm looking at current VA budget numbers (usaspending . gov) , and as of 6/29/24, VA Compensation and Pension had 181.6B in appropriated budget, 131.8B in obligated funds, and 116.0B has been spent. Even if spending continues at Q1-Q3 rates and expenditures go to 154.7B, that is still 26.9B available for carryover. So, crisis averted: pass an ammendment, take 11% of the carryover and good to go.
Likewise, VHA should have more than enough carryover to cover its projected shortfall.
I'm (truly) open to correction if I'm wrong, but that's how I'm reading it.

This is what I’ve been saying. Neither party in Congress would allow it, it’s bad for business. And no presidential candidate would allow it, and it’s not like they have anything to do with it because Congress will vote on it prior to the election anyway if I’m not mistaken.
The VA is basically announcing they need a bigger budget for next FY. Disability and benefits aren’t going anywhere. It’s just fear mongering on an election year and I like Clay but it’s just content for him. There’s nothing to worry about. The government just poofs money out of thin air because that’s what our fiscal system is. And on the off chance they did stop payments, it wouldn’t last considering the most tactically trained and deranged members of our society would go off the rails snd remind them why they shouldn’t fuck with us. A lot of crazy ass vets out there and the government knows to not give them a reason.

The problem is the VA and congress just finished the 2025 VA budget a few weeks ago, and VA didn’t mention anything about a budget shortfall the whole time. Then out of the blue VA says we just found out we need 3 Billion immediately to pay for the rest of 2024, and another 12 Billion for 2025😮. WTF VA how the F is it possible that you didn’t know about this funding months ago🤔

What if and just to be devils advocate on this the va submitted its estimated budget and congress just kind of went well screw it we don’t think you need that much. And once the budget was actually written out the higher ups at the va were like “whoah this budget is going to cause a 15 billion shortfall”.
The reason why it might not have been said out publicly is because there could have still been uncertainty as to whether or not their estimates were taken into account.
I dont think its as cut and dry as “the va dropped the ball.” It could be but I am willing to bet that congress ignored things as well.

Thanks for sharing your input into the broken record that has been playing for a whole lot of years, that NO ONE in our Federal Government can seem to hear, or is ignoring while the same broken record keeps playing year after year. I already know that the Federal Government and those that run it will never consider their compensation and wasteful spending in the shortfall list, so this is totally rhetorical, and believe in my opinion that even mentioning some kind of shortfall for any funds to Veterans is on a level of Governmental treason, since as Veterans our cards have already been played and our time has been served in the game, and it is not appropriate and does not show integrity for those that gave some and those that gave all, to be considered for a reshuffle of the deck in the middle of their game. The Federal Government can call it a shortfall to Veterans, which is not accurate and not the truth, since our Federal Government has the power of how and where they spend money, and they are deciding/voting to put money that could/should be paid to Veterans on the shortfall list. The Federal Government has been writing blank checks to keep the Federal Government running for years, so this is just the same old song and dance that has been going around and around like a merry-go-round, with NO ONE in the Federal Government smart enough to appropriately fix what is and where it is broken, without continually talking about or trying to throw Veterans under the bus. "If you don't believe this lie that's true, just ask the blind man, he saw too"!🙂

@@TheCivDiv The executive branch's big fear is grandma/grandpa not being to pay their rent due to a missed federal payment whether that is SSA, VA, or some other recurring federal payment and testifying in front of congress about it. If we go into a CR the funding levels should be the same and this money gets found. This is why if fraud is committed against you and your payments for a few months are stolen, they cut new payments from treasury right away, and work on investigating that after making you whole. While this is a major f-up in budgeting, I cant see how they will shortchange benefit money.

I have to ask this question…How is this my problem? But this is why I tell veterans, if you’re not completely mentally/physically disabled as in not being able to mobilize your own weight without significant handicap, do not center these payments around your whole life. Make yourselves useful, Yes we are veterans, but it’s time to let go of certain things, for one, we will never be in service again & it’s time re-assimilate into society, find new careers, & accomplish the feats we may not have had the opportunity to while serving. It’s necessary not to become dependent bums of the government, yes we deserve the benefits, however, I think better of us, that we can do better, than to constantly sit in fear of the shut off valve. They can turn it off tomorrow & I’ll be fine, this is the confidence I’d rather see from my fellow veterans, than being fearful that our crumbs will be cut off. I say crumbs, because just looking at the money Uncle Sam spent in Afghanistan per day & the amount of aid given to Ukraine, they’ve proven they have enough capital to make every veteran a millionaire many times over. All of this is quite pathetic, our congress & senate is lame, as well as the institutions that support us & our families.
