Hi Friends! Leave a comment below if you're reading this! Ed Cherney is an incredibly talented producer/engineer-and also one of the funniest and most down-to-earth. 3 GRAMMYs, 5 TEC Awards, and an Emmy aside, Ed takes nothing for granted, knowing his job is a “killer” one. If you hadn’t heard his name already, he’s one of the great rock engineers of all time. A short list of his 350+ credited albums includes work by the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop, Bob Seger, and even Spinal Tap.
Another great interview Warren! Ed is a master. In addition to his world-class mixing skills he seems like a heck of a nice guy. I'll probably watch this again.
Warren -- a truly kickin' interview! What a master Ed is. Not only his rich learned experiences from the technical side but the relational aspect and his really healthy perspective on life. The cherry on the whipped cream was his mention of Evanston, IL! I LOVE Evanston and the greater Chicago area including the south side. I went to school for a few years on the campus of Northwestern. There is a fantastic multi-cultural event in the city park just to the south of the Northwestern Campus each summer right along the lakefront -- complete with international food and music (outstanding music). Not to mention Giordano's (restaurant) which he didn't mention. Oh my, great memories. What an interview! Thank you for investing the time and energy for this, Warren!
Thanks ever so much Dave! I really appreciate all of your insight! I love hearing about Chicago, I just watched the Blues Brothers last night, again, for the hundredth time! I dreamt of Chicago living in England!!
Wow! Those interviews... They just keep getting better and better! Million thanks Warren & the team! Thanks to Ed, of course, for generously sharing his experience with us! Have all a great day! ;-)
Love the interviews with the greats of the industry. So much wisdom in experience..... “be the best in whatever you do... “ hmmm where have we heard that before! :) Thanks for sharing, what a legend.
3:00 love that guy - exactly my thinking now that i am 53 and have finally reached the conclusion they i want to be a Music Producer for the rest of my life. Outstanding!
Wow that track sounds amazing....and what a cool dude. I'm that hungry and want to know everything too...either of these guys would be amazing mentors.
Ed is such a cool dude. Not just brilliant producer/engineer, but a true music lover that wants people to feel what he gets from the best quality possible. A noble quest.
That was fantastic! All the engineers from his era and before are so outspoken, witty and insightful and often a little cheeky, too with so much character. Would it be possible to interview Ron Nevison? Thanks so much for the great content.
Thanks, Warren, for interviewing such great legends all the time, always enjoy watching your videos, really appreciate your effort to teach us amazing stuff and that actually motivated me to create my own channel and trying to give the best I can to others, and honestly, it feels really good to share what you know and learn from others, thanks very much again man, all the best
Dear Ed, you were such a lovely guy and one of the best engineers around. I wish his family strength with the loss of this great man. I'm crying now, I'm sorry. This is so sad.
I think this video shows, there is no substitute for hard work and love of craft, but so many of these guys - Ed included - have their ego's in check and no matter the jobs they've done personally, still have a goal as reference; they don't rest on their laurels but continually strive towards improving. I'm forever humbled by the skills and talents of others, but so are these people and it's refreshing when you consider how often their skills go un-noticed by your average music consumer, but how much of a difference their talent makes to a great recording and listening experience. Another heartfelt insight and much appreciated
Agreed 100%! Truly talented people aren't flashy, they are humble, they respect those around them, they are always learning! That sums Ed up perfectly!
Great stuff again Warren! You know the old saying - there's those that know, those that don't know, and those that don't ****ing know they don't know ;-)
Feel so awesome to watch such amazing people and legends, listening to their experience, feel so positive about the thing I'm doing, awesome bro thank you
I love these interviews. Thanks Warren. It's always amazing and so interesting to see how all these big names like Bob Marlett, Cammeron Webb, Shelly Yakus and, in this case, Ed Cherney prove to be extremely friendly helpful and modest people in your interviews. They are all pointing out how important it is to support others and to help each other out, because they did it themselves or experienced it at some time on their way. They all have great stories to tell and a ton of knowledge to share. We all seem to have one thing in common. Regardlessly if you're a bed room studio producer or a multiple times Grammy winner, we all share the love, fascination and passion for music.
Thanks ever so much Marc for sharing all of your incredible information my friend!! Agreed, Ed's interview was amazing for me! I really enjoyed, so much and I learned so much!!
Another great interview Warren and team, and thanks to Ed, for his insight. "Off the wall" was a masterpiece, from jumping disco tracks, to "she's out of my life".
Fantastic interview! What a conscientious engineer, getting to work with Quincy Jones and Phil Ramone. Such a wonderful, sweet and funny guy! "two years getting up at 5, cleaning bathrooms, my first promotion they gave me a brush, Marty Feldman owned it" I laughed out loud. Thank you so much Warren, and thank you Ed for taking the time.
Nice to hear Ed talk candidly about the glory days to today’s streamlined budget conscience work flow. It shows that even the greats are affected by today’s music trends.
I went to third & fourth grade just South of Chicago. I just went on a massive memory flood, from the start of this interview. Ages 7 & 8! I learned all about the holocaust there as well. Music was already a major part of my life, but became more concentrated over the road. The summer before school started there I encountered Shirley Bassey, just as a person, my mom's age, out in the middle of nowhere, all of us just visiting a church on a night that congregational singing was all that was happening. A cappella, shaped notes, the maroon books. Very funny and sweet stuff happened after all that, including all the church ladies getting mad at us all, for not turning up at the reception and we all went to a bunk house in the middle of nowhere, and the following morning she came outside to see what was going on, just in the nick of time to save my life from a situation I was in, on top of a Tennessee Walker horse. She was hollering the key information that no one else could think of to say and pantomimed what I needed to do, less than a second from most certainly what would have been decapitation as the horse raced for fresh oats in the back of a low roofed trailer. At some point she gave me her box of marzipan that I think the church ladies had given her. She screamed bloodcurdlingly as the horse went like a shot into the trailer right in front of her, and then she passed out. xoxoxo Ms Shirley. She definitely understood my need to sing, but also my need to hide. 😊 Ed just sent me on a flashback with his memories at the beginning. I will have to play this back from where I got distracted. I might be the same age as Ed. The mysteries of life...
Audrey Sims thanks ever so much for sharing your experiences! I agree, I love having my memories tripped by amazing people like Ed! True blessing to be able to do these interviews!
I hung on every word, the song mix sounded amazing, even through my mediocre tv speakers, Ed is a god among men and super cool cat. Thanks for posting Warren, cheers!
I'm a rock guy and one of my favorite songs is Could I Be Your Girl by Jann Arden. Ed worked on that and it is a great track! The whole album is great!

A quick story: A band I recently did some engineering for hired Ed to mix a track for them. The producer (who is amazing) told me they hired Ed to mix a track. I thought why on earth would they hire Ed. The band is a new up coming pop band. I haven't heard Ed do anything in the style of the band. I thought it would be the wrong kind of vibe and a huge waste of the Labels money. Well, when the producer played the track I was blown away. I never thought I would hear the band sound like that. They sounded lush, huge and full of energy. It sounded expensive and musical, I was blown away. I would love to ask Ed some questions about that. He truly is on a different level then most. Ed I hope you read this. Know that the time you put into music is noticed! Thanks
