Great video! My late father had his own tree removal buisness and he was the most level headed and genuine man I have ever met. You very much reminded me of him in this video,I kinda teared up at the end when you said "Always learn something new","Compliment people" and "Don't be an asshole". Sorry to sound corny but this video made my day, almost like my father was speaking through you to me. Thanks for the video and you have a new subscriber!
I am a regular suburban home owner who never worked in the industry. In the past I have hired a stump grinding machine to do the work. The hire company charges by the half day period but that includes the moment it is loaded onto my trailer and unloaded after I return the grinder to their premises. Their charges are $200 for half a day. Last time I needed stumps ground, I decided to get a quote from a tradesman who does it for a living.. The contractor arrived with an assistant and what would have taken me at least 3 hours work, they had done in an hour and were cheaper than me hiring the stump grinder from the hire shop.

Love your attitude, delivery, opinions, and Dale Carnegie reference. Thanks for sharing the info on grinding. _How to Win Friends and Influence People_ is an excellent read. Even better if you can go through the Dale Carnegie training. The best people aren't afraid to share their secrets.
Good tips. Got a construction background and a few big stumps in my yard for a rental this weekend. Going to save a few hundred bucks hopefully. Never actually used one but just what I needed to avoid some pitfalls.
Good video and advice, i also tend to dig around the stump with a spade just a few inches deep to look for any big stones or concrete as these things normally get put under trees !!
Thanks for the video. New Stump grinder here also. Using a DK2 so its a bit of a bear to push around. I've done around 10 stumps now and getting the hang of it. I had been starting at the top, I will try to come in from the side next time to try it. Also the book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", great book, it has changed my life and how I relate to people. I read it back when I was an Instructor at the Army Drill Sergeant School. After reading it, I was Instructor of Class for all of my remaining cycles. Great read.
Hey mustang its clate again, like i said im moving from tree trimmimg to gringing and really appreciate your knowledge and experience, i now understand how to calculate the stump price but how do you price the cleanup into the total or separate price?
The public servant attitude shows. Was grinding for 25 plus years on my off day from my 24 hour shifts with the LRFD. Massive heart attack has me out to pasture now. I did get the old Levco fuel filter changed and tank cleaned and the hole brazed in the tank and finally bled and ground five pretty big stumps for my neighbor who has helped me out when needed. Perhaps I can hit it little more but haft to improve a lot more. The one thing know to do after years of daylight to dark grinding. I tried employees also. Best just me as well. A lot of up keep and proper bite take longer but so much easier on the stump grinders as you have mentioned. Levco Doug.
I’m just getting started with a stump grinding business and I’m going to be using a self propelled stand behind grinder. Do you have any recommendations on a brand?
I change my teeth almost every morningthat way my machine cuts good and the teeth are easier to sharpen because they're not in that bad of shape and we definitely appreciate your videos

First and foremost thank you for this video my friend, so much was answered on the questions, but i have other questions as well. If i have 4k to spend on a stump grinder, what type of grinder would you suggest clutch/ no clutch, which types of teeth, does the horsepower of the engine improve the time spent grinding, and last but not least does the amount of teeth on the wheel or how big the wheel is matter on how long the process will take or would it be more cost effective ?
4k will buy you a used 252 that needs work ... teeth depends on area ground rocks or no rocks ..Green teeth are the best for a smaller hp machine ..hp equals time ...look at my videos on project vermeer 252
@@mustangrebuilder well i had some stuff that I hoped would've fell in place just right, but I didn't get approved for the loan, but that's ok! Back to the savings :), till next time sir! Again, thank you for your advice, time, and help with my questions.
Good advice I have a stump business also I use a Carlton 4012 diesel sharp teeth make all the difference. I charge the same way u do also. Great video 👍🏼
I hear you on the ear protection. I build fences and I"m curious about stump grinding as well. I love my 3M headphones with bluetooth. I listen to podcasts all day and learn while I work and absolutely love it. So it's great for me to see another guy who does the same.
I grind stumps in Finland. I was happy to see that we are in about the same price range. I charge 2,75 dollars/inch = 1 eur/cm. Sometimes more as you, too. I'm doing the job with Avant 860 & Avant stump grinder. A bit slower but way more comfortable 🙂
Maybe you've answered this but I wanted to communicate with you a little if you don't mind. I just spent the day grinding, I don't want to go full time right now. I charged one price for just grinding the stump, and a whole lot more for removing the dirt and I didn't put any back. I would rather just grind the stump and move on... is that ok? Do you think I should incorporate that totally? The time difference is astounding is the only reason I'm even asking.
I have a couple questions I'm newer to the business I have an sc252. I do Residential only. I find myself having a lot of dirt to move afterwards and the 252 doesn't have a blade I thought about fabricating one however I don't know if it'll have the power to move the dirt back. I've been looking at other alternatives I was thinking about buying one of those power paddles Which is like a weed eater with a paddle or a power broom that i would walk behind. I didn't know if you had experience with either of them on what would work better or if there's something else I should use. There are some jobs where I spend so much time shoveling dirt and I want to minimize that time and maximize my grinding time. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. What are your thoughts.
@@mustangrebuilder do you think that the weed eater one will move enough dirt? the other thing I was thinking was has the power broom that's like a self propel snow blower size that has a broom.
I just bought a Dk2 from Lowes..it's only $1,500 did my first stump and made $200 in two hours..but you better be in shape because it's a Beast to handle

I asked him a bunch of questions and after he left I told my wife "that's what I wanna do, I want to have a stump grinding business". She is being very supportive and I'm super exited. I am still developing some sort of business plan and I look forward to your very helpful stump grinding business videos. I'm currently active duty and would like to get into this part time maybe do residential. My goal is to go from part time to full time and split up the residential jobs with the private company jobs. Kind of what you are doing. PLEASE keep up your videos. my wife and I look forward to what you have to say about your experience, success & failures. what not to do that kind of stuff. God bless brother stay safe.
You made my efforts worth it all and yes I will share more with you

@@tonybabineau5642 You nailed it right on the head glad to see another guy doing good with a grinder
@@tonybabineau5642 hey man thanks a lot. I haven't purchased anything yet, i'm still on the market for a stumper. I appreciate the tips. I'll post something when this thing kicks off.
I just put my machine into dealer yesterday I take very good care of it I put tarp on it or garage it every day to keep it out of elements but my grinding wheel is warn out so I'm putting a new 1 on cost 2000 for wheel and haven't got bill for labor yet Iet dealer do all the major repairs but I have a good mechanic that can do just about every thing else and while machine is at bobcat I'm getting a new deck put on trailer its always something whether its a $20 strap tires for trailer new rake shovel files for saw your always going to have hidden expenses if i ever had to work for someone i wouldn't ask for a raise after being in business for yourself you don't make as much as people think
That’s the reason I’m watching this video😀I’m tired of dealing with the unprofessional jerks and renting a grinder to do the job myself! Thanks for sharing!
Love your attitude, delivery, opinions, and Dale Carnegie reference. Thanks for sharing the info on grinding. I was going to rent a small unit to do a couple on my property but now am considering starting a biz here in central Texas. I will subscribe and check out your other videos for more insight.
You bet!
Good luck!
Couldn't of said it better myself, keep up the encouraging words!
Got this book on tape listening to it now. Thanks
Hope you enjoy it!
30 years ago you could have taught me tree climbing with out nearly cutting off my arm.👏👏👏👏.
Great book.
Oh wow!
Good video and advice, i also tend to dig around the stump with a spade just a few inches deep to look for any big stones or concrete as these things normally get put under trees !!
Right on
I love your attitude man! Thank you for the tips. Totally appreciated 👍
I appreciate that!
yer a great teacher!!! iam ordering that book!!! great job ! thanks for the maintenance tips. they are worth gold to me !!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great read.
You made my day brother
I agree about the hearing and eye protection. I always use ear plugs when I use the log splitter, chainsaws etc. I value my hearing and eyes.
Plus light loose pants for the lawn cutters still wearing shorts.
Thanks far the advice any opinions on the Tractor PTO grinders ? What grinders do you recommend far someone starting in the business
An older Vermeer 252 or a new Bandit sg40
Hey mustang its clate again, like i said im moving from tree trimmimg to gringing and really appreciate your knowledge and experience, i now understand how to calculate the stump price but how do you price the cleanup into the total or separate price?
I charge the same as the price of the stump for cleanup my friend but most of my contractors' do it while I am there
The public servant attitude shows.
Levco Doug.
Thanks for your service
Thanks for doing these videos and showing us how to do the job.
You bet
I appreicate your knowledge and your will to teach it. Thank you.
Thanks it made my day
Thanks for the tips. 👍🏾Greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Really helpful insight. Any problems with hand vibration on stump machines?
No but a manual swing one could be a problem
@@mustangrebuilder Thanks 👍
What an awesome video. Thanks for the great advice.
You are so welcome!
GREAT VIDEO ! THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME INFO ! VERY WELL DONE !
“It teaches you how to not be a dick”. My wife overheard this and ordered the book off Amazon for me 😂😂. Great video, thanks for sharing

You can do it!
Awesome tips. Thanks.
I do stump in MN. Do you ever stumble across any used rg-100s. Thanks for the video.
Not yet!
I’m just getting started with a stump grinding business and I’m going to be using a self propelled stand behind grinder. Do you have any recommendations on a brand?
look for at least 20hp unit perhaps an older rayco
Great video Mustang! Thanks for all the honest help

Getting ready to rent one . Thank you so much.
If I'm starting a stump grinding business what machine do you recommend? What would you say your annual machine maintenance cost is?
Just depends on where you live ..big stumps ? or 30 inch diameter and smaller
I love it! Thanks for sharing! My husband and I own and operate our stump grinding business. You couldn’t have said it better!
That is awesome!
Thanks for sharing. Great book recommendation!
You are so welcome!
Great video, looking forward to more
Thanks
I change my teeth almost every morningthat way my machine cuts good and the teeth are easier to sharpen because they're not in that bad of shape and we definitely appreciate your videos
Brilliant! Had me laughing out loud! Thanks
Man I just bought a sc 252 & you have not only inspired me. You have educated me with everything i have needed thus far when it comes to my new machine & your tips & tutorials on how to grind stumps have been tremendously helpful.
If you ever doubt yourself or your channel when I comes to educating others about stump grinding or how to fix then or maintain them… don’t sir. You are an inspiration to me. fuck the haters & keep those videos coming sir.
I will be purchasing two of your stump grinding mafia shirts.
With many thanks. James west with Elite Quality Tree & Stump-Grinding LLC

Great video. And advice. What do you think of the grinders attached to a bobcat?
I see a place for them but only in wide open areas
Thanks for keeping it real. The ending made me laugh. Great vid

@@mustangrebuilder alright ill do that and get back with you. Oh, i forgot to mention i live in Georgia
@@mustangrebuilder well i had some stuff that I hoped would've fell in place just right, but I didn't get approved for the loan, but that's ok! Back to the savings :), till next time sir! Again, thank you for your advice, time, and help with my questions.
Thank you for sharing this information to the RUclips Community

Good advice I have a stump business also I use a Carlton 4012 diesel sharp teeth make all the difference. I charge the same way u do also. Great video 👍🏼
Thanks brother
I hear you on the ear protection. I build fences and I"m curious about stump grinding as well. I love my 3M headphones with bluetooth. I listen to podcasts all day and learn while I work and absolutely love it. So it's great for me to see another guy who does the same.
Right on
What inexpensive grinder would you recommend buying for someone who is just trying to start their own business
a used vermeer sc252
HOPE TO JUST DO STUMPS SOME DAY !
This was way better than a stump grinding video has any right to be. Thanks! I'm off to sharpen my Vermeer 222 and tackle a 6' Silver Maple stump!
thank you my friend
Maybe you've answered this but I wanted to communicate with you a little if you don't mind. I just spent the day grinding, I don't want to go full time right now. I charged one price for just grinding the stump, and a whole lot more for removing the dirt and I didn't put any back. I would rather just grind the stump and move on... is that ok? Do you think I should incorporate that totally? The time difference is astounding is the only reason I'm even asking.
I only grind and rake over ... I dont haul ...I did a long time ago but I pass the true cleanup onto a landscaper
@@mustangrebuilder and how do you deal with I guess "taller" stumps? Do you cut them?
Does this machine require motor oil changes? Got a video about maintenance?
God bless
yes every 100 hrs
One of my tree companies uses one and yes it works fantastic
@@mustangrebuilder do you think that the weed eater one will move enough dirt? the other thing I was thinking was has the power broom that's like a self propel snow blower size that has a broom.
Great video man! I’m looking to start a stump grinding bussiz... would you make a video of what would be a good starter machine and why. Thanks
I just bought a Dk2 from Lowes..it's only $1,500 did my first stump and made $200 in two hours..but you better be in shape because it's a Beast to handle

How did you go about removing the wood chips when ya did do that and did you fill it back in with soil?
I used to haul the chips but now I dont ... if they want it done I refer a landscaper friend
What did you charge for that stump? The total price. Thanks
$198
Ahh shit brother, I am glad you don't listen to the haters. Non of us knows what we are doing coming out of the gate! I’ve done a lot of work since my last comment brother. I bought a rayco 1625 35hp engine. I’ve been sniffing the stumps out. I’ve been working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin done work in Freeport Illinois the Quad cities and all the small towns around my area. Me and uncle Inlaw just got back from portage Michigan, where the tornadoes hit a lot of wind damage out there honestly bro if it wasn’t for your videos, I probably wouldn’t be out here hustling and bustling like this, listening and watching you definitely gave me that drive I needed. Keep on stumping. Stumping is life
