Dan so awesome to see you posting again. Life must be crazy for you right now. I love all your stuff and can't wait to see you back in the water. Your videos are by far the best videos about spearfishing out there. Thanks for taking the time to edit your video and audio. Top-notch video's as usual.
Excellent video. I've been freediving/spearfishing since 1983 and I still use a float line and float. Also much quicker to reload than a reel gun setup. For bluewater hunting I use a breakaway system.
Great tips. Have to say I started out with setup 1 but had shark issues. I went out and got a Wettie Float Boat, worth every cent. Quick to rig up, keeps fish out of the water and if I’m tired I can hold onto it.
i am getting ready for my first spearfishing session, ill be guided by expirienced family and friends members but i allways seek information for myself everytime i do something , cause i like to have a general idea of what i am doing beforehand to be easy for everyone, ty for the video !
Cant wait for the spearfishing season to start up again! Think i might get myself a polosub so i can enjoy the arctic waters even better. Keep up the great work dude!
This channel inspired me a lot to be a professional spearfisher someday. Though, I'm jealous seeing you guys here in spearfishing world wearing or having complete spearfishing accessories but still thanks to you sir Daniel about all your life-time lessons about spearfishing.
@@DanielMann can you teach how to hold breath for so long especially in cold water? I SUCK at holding breath more than 20 seconds when swimming underwater
Got another question for you on wetsuits. What is easier to put on a closed cell or open cell. And what mm to use in tropical water. I ask because I'm a short big guy and need a custom wetsuit made. Thank again for your time.
I haven't dove in a long time. We used to have something like a 3/16tgs of an inch, or ¼" safety pin looking thing. It clipped on your belt, and you would open it similar to a safety pin, slide the fish on gills first, and clip it back. We had great white where I dove, and elephant Seals, so would have a boogey board with rigging for line to dive down and tie to a rock, and a place to hook a stringer, or a goody bag, good for abalone. I later got a float that is a sewn cover for a smallish tire inner tube. Unzip it for lots of room, CO fusing to a predator.
This was my rigging for the past 25 years (T-Bar on the float, not the Speed Spike). Then , about a month ago, I bought a new roller gun at RabiTech in Cape Town. Louis suggested to remove clip from the gun and attach it to the float-line rather than the gun. Just put a Loop of Dacron on each gun. This way you not only save on clips, but your float can now attach to any other float line in a flash. Also allows my Reel Guns to not have this long metal clip dangling under it when I disconnect the float in the seaweed/bamboo. Makes a lot of sense and now all my guns have a loop on the grip and the clip is on my float line. It also allows to clip the float on my drop weights....
Enjoyed as always, im learning so much everytime i watch your videos. even some stuff i know i won't use but its good to know. you got me really curious about the rope splicing, never understood how to make it. sounds quite crucial....i'll check into it. thanks!
Awesome video! I tried spearfishing for the first time in the Mediterranean this summer with a cheap plastic speargun from a local tourist shop. Would love to see a video on how to choose a good (transportable) spear gun as a beginner without breaking the bank. So what to look out for etc :)
thank you so much for the information! love your vids and all the knowledge you share. thanks for helping to keep a rookie like me out of tangled float lines :) (I was tying my float line to my dive belt b4 watching this video)
Another great informative video from the Mann. I use a T-string around my waist, my float isn't attached to me but I tend not to wander off too far from it, a friend suggested I attach it to my waist using soft bungee elastic, I still haven't tried the floatline to speargun connection, I'm guessing it will tangle too much... Thanks for posting!
Good grief Dan100% great advice once again. If I may value add I'd suggest a solid or robust plastic float over an inflatable for beginners. Well done Dan, I feel weird now 😜
I got some new snorkel gear for next summer and now I find out that Lake Michigan and Lake Huron have opened up walleye for spearfishing.😁 Now it's time to get some spearfishing gear, so here I am trolling for good gear videos!
I exclusively do beach shore dives, I've been using speed stick and I've noticed it does get pretty heavy on a big day, or with a kingy. I'll try the stringer next
monofilament stringer sounds good. Thats all i could think about with using a stringer in the gulf of mexico. Bull sharks, hammerheads, tigersharks, definitely not something I would want a strong connection to hahaha
I've seen those a lot. Do the fish spoil on long swims? Here it's common for me to be in the drink for 4hours and if it was baking on top in the sun they would be going off for sure.
@@DanielMann Yea 4 hours would definitely be too long out of water. You can put ice into some float boats but it gets heavy quick. Still better to have a shorter dive with a float boat than having your dive ruined by sharks.
Great content, subscribed, how long is your line from your gun to your float, and is it always the same, or do you change the length for different conditions?
Another awesome video, very informative and educational. I had a similar set up for almost 6 years diving around Sydney. The only problem is massive stingrays sussed out and stole my fish. I started with the speed spike but ended up using a catch bag.
Never heard/seen a speed spike! Being a shore diver I can see the benefits. Still working on adjusting the length of my float line (which doesn't really float) as it sometimes gets caught around rocks, gotta be mindful of that!
Im a new spearo. Been running some float rope with my buoy on one end, then a U-bolt on the other end. And my catch bag clips on underneath my buoy. I like it because i can easily hitch the bolt under my weight belt when i swim to the next reef, then i simply drop it like a little anchor. The fish are safe and secure in the catch bag. Plus its hi vis yellow and i can find it. Maybe i need another line for the gun incase the kings swim by lol.
Hi Daniel, your videos are very inspiring and I think spear fishing will be my future hobby... I've looked at many spear fishing guns and seems like almost nobody uses pneumatic guns... can you make a video about that? What are the reasons that you would not use pneumatic gun?? Thanks.
Little advice, sometimes tiny things matter A LOT. If you use fishstringer, PLEASE put a swiwel at the start of it where you connect the entire stringer to a buoy. Why do you need swiwel? - fish on the stringer tend to rotate the line along its axis either by hydronamic forces when swimming or half alive fish that still tries to swim. First thing it makes it harder to put fish on stringer later as it gets messier and mdore crumped or the mono can literally break due to forces. We have seen on so many ocasions when the letter happens... and it wasnt a mooray eel death spiral, just sheer hydronamic spiraling of bunch of fish. Swiwel just makes it supear neat in long run.

Hey Daniel, im new to spearfishing and a bit unsure wether to attach my speargun only to my float or to attach my float to me and then my speargun to me aswell. If you have time to answer, ill appreciate it alot!
@@DanielMann In Norway it's normal practice to attach yourself to the float. Lots of reasons for this, one of them being, you can drop your belt and pull it back up by the floatline. But we do have a quick release on the belt so we can unhook it pretty fast. Shooting big prey like halibut, your setup is preferred, so you dont get pulled after the fish. ruclips.net/video/wRHuZHmJM3A/видео.html
I would probably use a drop weight to anchor my float and then use a reel gun. However to use a float you can make it easier by gathering it up in a coil on the surface before you dive. The float stays right next to you and then when you dive the rope follows you down, much less drag.

Thanks
hey Daniel, what program are you using to edit the videos please? it's awesome!
I use Adobe premiere pro and after effects for certain things too.
Whats about putting the fish in a float (assuming its designed for it) or catch bag ?
I don't like catch bags that much for fish. Limiting on the size and number of fish and also very heavy to drag along.

Does keeping the fish in the water on a stringer unnecessarily bring sharks in to inspect? I live on the pacific coast of California.
Fish struggling and vibrating sounds will attract sharks more so than fish on a stringer in my experience.
Thank you!
opinion on a floatline bungee?
For 99% of spearfishing not really necessary.
If loading a single band on a double band speargun ,which one do you load?

Just listened to NSP 106 on GoPro settings. It's a couple of years old so I was wondering if you still record at 2.7K 50 fps?
Oh and do you use a filter when filming in Norway/Denmark?
Hi Kristian, I still do film in 2.7K fps but in 4:3 mode for my hero 7. I’m hoping to get a hero 10 soon and I’ll shoot 4K 50fps in 4:3 mode. I don’t use any filters underwater only white balance and grading. Above water I use a variable ND on my mirrorless cameras.
Great. Thank you for the quick response! I'm getting a hero 10 for next season too. Should be quite an upgrade from my hero 4 :)
Why do you film in 4:3 by the way?
Everything I’ve ever shot in Norway has been a GoPro black 4. Great cameras for their time. I shoot in 4:3 so my head mount angle doesn’t always have to be perfect… never miss the action then!
Do you double or single wrap your shooting line?
Most of the time single wrap.

Hello from St.Petersburg
👋
Does anyone know the reason for using shark clips and not cheap carabiners?
Thanks
Carabiners are typically aluminium and will corrode in water. More to that the shark clip can be operated single handedly with gloves very easily. They are also designed with swivels and for the marine environment.
