- There are a lot of bad videos on youtube where people do not know what they are talking about when it comes to Ovie's tape job, since I have some of Ovie's sticks I thought I would share my knowledge to make the hockey world a better place. In order to promote change for better tape jobs, I am encouraging everyone to try out the methods they learn in this video, and submit their best Ovie tape job for a chance to win our version of Ovie's G3 Bauer stick.

My Dad taught me to put a strip of tape on the bottom of the blade then start taping. Saved alot moisture on the bottom, hence the the stick lasted longer. Thanks Dad

This is on point! Ive also been taping my sticks like this for years only I do 10 laps for the knob ring and then just griptape over it. No endplug and tuck the excess inside the stick.

I always use the puck to mark before I trim the toe. Makes the tape stick better before you cut.

god i love the attention to detail. my wife thinks i am an absolute lunatic because i retape my blade after every game and it takes me forever and ill re-do it completely if its not perfect.

helps lessen the grip, helps.with sogginess and also helps to make the tape thinner

What happened to those black old school tapes? It was like sandpaper with grip on it something sticky like.
hockey blade abrasive grip tapes are illegal to use in sanctioned games cause the deterioration to the puck causes it to roll, non-abrasive tapes like cats tongue are amazing. They even sell fitted protector kits and even some with webbing or bumps on it. I always used the waterproof tapes, they seemed to last the longest for blade protection.

To get the tape all nicely pushed down and so it just isnt so bright. No real reason otherwise . Its like a painter that gets new coveralls for work, they cover them in paint often cause they dont like new looking coveralls lol .

The problem with taping from heel to toe is that every time you shoot, the puck moves towards the toe and curls up each tape section after a while. Toe to heel is the way to go.
Ultimately, I don't think it matters that much but I switched from TTH to HTT because I noticed the tape freying less at the bottom since it's with the grain when skating forward, and I figure going against the grain on shots/passes might make for a little more grip for puck spin. I think it also makes trimming the toe easier.
As a heel-to-toe taper, I make a point of making each time around really tight and running a puck along it from heel to toe several times on front and back to make sure it's smooth. Not sure if it's as effective for those who favor white tape on their blade, but it works fine for me with black tape.
I always noticed this as a kid, but my solution was just to wax the fuck out of the blade. Probably why I never scored haha.

If you always tape your stick like someone else or use a stick etc. Like someone else nobody will ever use or tape a stick like yours. Find what works for you because you are not someone else!

Lmao definitely need a disclaimer, no matter how close your tape job matches, in fact even if Ovie taped your stick, WILL NOT increase your scoring. Better heading would have been Modern Day Tape Job no matter how nice your scissor work is.
Nobody thinks this increases scoring. He has particular mechanics that he customizes his taping to. But also, as he stated, it’s more about personal expression.

Iam a novice, why is this done?
For pretty much any player, when playing on ice your blade is constantly getting wet from melted ice. Blades are coated with a high grade polymer for strength and longevity so they're basically super smooth and also non abrasive so not to scuff the puck up. Cause chewed rubber tends to start to wobble and roll end over end. Tape on the stick basically provides a better traction point then a naturally smooth wet blade.
Oh and for us novices/non-pros blade replacements are too dayum expensive to continually replace so tape is a for sure must.
just tape the damm' stick.,,no magic bullets. Orr, Howe etc didn't OCD about taping sticks..just slap it on there and get er' dun.

Your exactly right, very rarely is the butt end of a stick used and it's actually illegal to use it in games but most players choose not to use a plastic butt end protector cause of the weight difference. Taped ends are much lighter.
