  • Today Melissa and I started staining and sealing the woodshed, I am very pleased with the Ready Seal we bought, I just have to figure out the best way to apply it. It works great on rough cut lumber off the mill and Im sure it would be a great stain sealant for fences, decks, sheds, or any wood that you want to protect from the elements.

I had a guy visit my neighborhood while it was finishing up being built. He did my fence for $350. He had a few 5 gallon buckets and a huge auto detailing sponge. He soaked up the sponge and wiped each panel, then he had an asistant follow behind him with a 8" brush to back brush and avoid drips and runs. They worked quick and covered alot of area fast. The sponge really helped get in between the panels. I was really pleased with the outcome.

Mike I'm a retired fence builder and I would stain our fences with the same type of sprayer you purchased and it worked fine but with a different stain product. We would have a guy with a roller following the guy spraying. No matter how careful ,the product will run down the boards and our product would spray on a wider span than what your sprayer was pushing out of your spray tip.

I have been a residential painter for the past 16 years and I enjoy it very much. My advice for you is to get an airless sprayer, spray with a 213 tip and back roll all surfaces. It’s best to apply heavy and lay-off with a 1/2 roller nap. When the roller is soaked, you can unload it on a dry area off the woodshed that is next to be stained (so you won’t have double coated areas). I’m happy to answer any questions that arise. I’d offer my help but I’m in northern Michigan and that’s a hike for me for half a days work. Lol.

Mike, I once painted a house for my cousin and he had an old cellar house he wanted painted also. The cellar house siding was old rough lumber that hadn't been painted in about 30 years. I tried using a brush and a roller and it was going to take a lot of paint and a lot of time to do a small building. I bought a Wagner power sprayer and it did a fantastic job. I still have it and love it, especially for rough cut lumber. It doesn't atomize the paint so bad that you get all that over spray like an air sprayer. You get a little but not too bad. They are well worth the cost. It will work on thin stain or a good thick latex.

Great product MIKE, just pump up the sprayer until it gets tight and keep it pumped up tight. This is stain and not water so it takes a lot of pressure to make it spray!! I know it is thin but not as thin as water. I installed a tire air valve in my tanks and use my air compressor to pressure up all my spray bottles. Works great!!! Try it.

Hey M&M, good morning. Finally a question I can answer, what me and my crew (2 guys) have always done is use a 9" long nap roller cover on a full size frame with a four or six ft. pole ( adjustable is best ) working out of a five gallon bucket with a roller screen, apply as much as the wood wants and then back brush to work it in always keeping a wet edge. Hope that helps! Love the look that people are talking about!😂😂✌🏻️

Spraying is definitely the way to go. Go rent a sprayer electric sprayer, you can adjust the pressure to get the right penetration. Might have to have someone go behind you. We put two coats on our 30 x40 garage in about 7.5 hours. The rented sprayer will hold 5 gallons of stain. It lasted for 8 years before we had to do it again. The exterior is T111, don’t know if that would make a difference.

Mike and Melissa, the stain looks great!! I have a fence staining project coming up and will definitely consider the Ready Seal. A rented or purchased airless sprayer (Graco X7 - around $400.00) would be the fastest way to get it done but the spray tanks work fine for smaller jobs like this. Use a tip with a wide spray pattern and adjust (twist) the tip to fine tune the pattern and volume. Consider re-stirring and thinning the stain if it won't go through the nozzle. I've stained my fences multiple times with good result using a spray tank. Have to use the right spray tip, keep the pressure up and have someone chase you with a roller on a pole. It goes extremely fast. Your whole shed could be stained in an hour our so with a spray tank and a helper on a roller. If you decide to go with just a roller, put your stain in a 5 gallon bucket with a grate. Apply with a roller on a pole and chase drips with a brush. Much faster than a tray.

Hi, Mike. I have used a larger, heavy-nap roller for putting color on old stucco and it works really good. It was a milk-wash stain, much the same consistency as your stain, I think, and it filled and covered really well. And, the plus side is that it was very conservative on the stain.

World of difference in sprayers. Like they say you get what you pay for. I have a commercial sprayer "Graco" with a 50 ft. hose and I stained our whole house 2500 sq. ft. 2 story plus 4 car garage in one day. My wife had all she could do just to keep opening new cans and swapping them out. It was a little pricey but it was very fast.

Used Ready Seal on a 110' of fencing built with 6' white cedar panels. Wife and I brushed it on each panel, front and back, before mounting them to the posts. The 5 gal size was just enough, and the results looked fantastic. I'll try a sprayer in a few years (hoping 4-5) when it needs another application, as it's pretty thin, and should spray fine.

The stream coming out of that pump sprayer reminded of a small squirt gun. Keep up the great work.

Well too late maybe for this time. But for in the future I highly recommend using a stain pad. They have them on Amazon shur-line 9 inch pad with handle $9.05. I got mine from Lowes. I stained my deck and fence this past fall. After having a deck for 30+ years and a wood fence for 17 years. And many hours staining and using different apllication methods. I can say these pads are the only way to go. Fast no mess no waste. Try them you will LOVE them! I promise. Rough wood will tear them fairly easy. I just learned to use less pressure on those boards that were rough. So worth the money.

Love the color Mike. Tried them all, brush, roller, sprayer, best luck I have ever had was a wide 5 inch natural bristle brush that allows the handle to unscrew and I screw in a broom handle so I can stand back and soak the stuff into the lumber. Any of the synthetic bristles I found to waste too much. Get a natural bristle brush and it worked great.

I have not read all the comments so maybe this has been mentioned already. Get a good pump up sprayer with a brass wand and nozzle. Pump it up until you cannot pump anymore. Keep the pressure high and back brush as you go. We have a log house and we stain it this way every 3 years. One person can stain the whole house with this method in two days using a man lift. Also wear latex gloves. A plastic painters suit is great also because it splashes a lot. I use a product called Woodguard. It has UV and insect protection.

Definitely a roller Mike, it will be worth it in the long run. I would keep teasing Melissa about the dewalt sprayer though 😉

I used that same sprayer for two years with a spray nozzle. Worked real well. Mike I can't believe you aren't an expert on staining because you are on everything else. Bet when you finish you will be!

I like using a roller. It pushes the product into the wood better. Use the pump sprayer for hard to reach places. Pump sprayer doesn’t have enough pressure though. Great color choice!

I have stained a lot of decks and the best way I found is either a commercial sprayer or a brush. And if you are not going to use the sprayer that much you could rent one. But a good stain brush works great. Love your videos.

I drilled a hole and installed a tire valve so I can pressurize the sprayer with a compressor. I got over 300 feet of fence and my deck done very fast and easy

The ready seal is very nice to look at. That pump sprayer was disappointing only 20 bucks but Hunter could use that at BK. Ty was not consulted and he needs to be asked about the sprayer or roller. I think the roller is the better option but yeah get the chain gang out what are they doing anyway? Hello Hunter. Thank you for sharing the video. Ed

I have stained my white pine log cabin several times over the last 18 years. I tried an airless sprayer that pulls from the can of stain directly but I still had to back brush to work the stain in then I had to clean the sprayer which takes a while. No time saved at all. I now use only a 4" brush right out of the can. A Purdy staining brush works best. Cheaper brushes do not hold enough stain or clean up as well so they are too much work. I enjoy your channel and look forward to your next projects.

Good morning Morgan’s. Mike, you and I are roughly the same age, and as members of the fraternal order of JOAT’S ( Jack of all Trades), we have both learned that the fastest way usually is not the best way. In my experience especially with raw wood, getting the finish to penetrate will insure long term results. Brushing and rolling is the best way to get these long term results . Love the color.

I’ve done a lot of rough sawn pine staining, the best and easiest is to stain it before assembling the structure. The easiest application method. I found was the use of a painting pad that has a rough bristly surface that gives you the final brush like finish without brushing it in. I have also used a roller and sprayer for fast application but both require brushing out with a brush or pad to get even penetration.

As someone how has done many stainings of decks for customers, I found this product to be the best yet. I chose to use the roller method to be the best and use a medium-size brush to stain the sides of the boards to really make a nice finish. This product is oil-based and will beat all other products oil or water-based. I do work for many very off customers who expect perfection and long-lasting products. Spraying does not give as good of results and the overspray creates more work and clean up.

Spray is the way to go. Airless sprayer $450 at home depot, quick back roll and you are good. Covers all surfaces with pressure. I did our 24x36 one and a half story garage in hours.

Just had our new cedar fence stained. Fence guy sprayed 2/3 and his wife followed with a brush. One side we couldn't spray because neighbor has a truck and trailer right behind the fence. I ended up rolling stain myself and I think my side looks richer/deeper in color than the sprayed parts. Took a bit more time, but I'm happy with the outcome.

Thats funny, my wife does the "triple eye roll" as well when I mention a new tool . It's best to sneak them in the shop and get them dirty before you take them out then say " no honey... I got this as a gift a long time ago ".

I used a Wagner sprayer and it worked great. Ready seal is an oil based, self leveling, penetrating stain/sealer. You shouldn't have to have anyone follow you around. If you are going to use a roller, use the extension on it so you don't get splatter on you.

Mike, I’ve had good luck on fences with my HVLP sprayer. It has a turbine for pressure and it doesn’t require a lot of power so my small 1500W generator is easy to haul around and a gallon of gas will keep it running all day. I used this combination on my 4 board fencing that I have on 900’ of frontage. I loaned it to my brother for the same kind of job and it worked well for both of us. I’m a huge fan of HVLP. I use it for spray painting walls and applying finishes on furniture I make. One way to make spraying easier is to do while the lumber is laying flat - before nailing it up. You can apply your product thicker with almost no runs.

Mike, if you are going to stain the inside of the wood shed and the rafters, you are going to want to invest in a good sprayer and several paint brushes. The sprayer should spray hard enough for the stain to penetrate the wood.

  • @cayminlast

The sprayer should have an adjustable nozzle, to make it more of a mist than a stream. I have used one with great results, a helper with something like a 5" or even a wider brush working it into the grain, even a good old white-wash brush will work. Good job you guys!

I've used a hand pump sprayer, Wagner power sprayer, and roller/brush method for apply fence stain. The hand pump sprayer did not work that well. Using a lower price point Wagner sprayer, worked quite well and the stain lasted just as long as the roller/brush method. I used Olympic stain (thin type, not the semi-solid) in all of my applications. I got about 5 years out of the stain before it faded enough to need a pressure wash and re-stain.

Applied 20 gallons of stain last year and used a power sprayer followed by a roller. Works best with two people. Absolutely is the best way to go. Fastest and most complete coverage. Able to apply more gallons per minute than other methods.

Mike, I am not a professional painter, but a Wagner airless sprayer may be your best bet. I painted a metal building, 24x32 old tin, with a Wagner. Worked out well. Good coverage was easy to obtain.
I have also use an air sprayer to paint equipment. Used it all one summer, got good too.
