My question is why would you not use a similar gauge wire of the prong? Lay solder on top of prong then add the wire so you have them bond together. Since a solder prong will wear away faster if than just having a seam where you added a 14k gold wire being on top. Try that out if you get a chance your clients will appreciate the longer lasting and more durable prong and looks a lot better.

I wish you were the jeweler that fixed my ring prong! Three sapphire stones were damaged in the process. Completely scratched and sanded down. My grandmother gave me that ring. I’m sad that it was ruined in the process of being “fixed”. Jeweler was supposed to be reputable and had good reviews.

I recently bought a diamond Cuban bracelet and in the week I’ve had it a quarter of the diamonds have come loose.. about 11 stones, ballpark of repair cost to reset the stones? They’re pretty small like 0.33mm I think

That was great, I really didn’t understand rhodium plating but you made it easy to understand.

Can you actually double or triple dip with the rhodium, or would it do anything extra?

DAVID, The best way to get a thicker coating like as in doing a Vermeil piece over silver versus just gold plated silver or a thicker rhodium plate is to do the plating in one longer time period and not in multiple events. I have found that trying to go back and plate over rhodium or gold will increase the thickness of the plating material on the object but I also find I can get a cloudy or uneven look to the plating and then the only way to fix it then is to strip the plating off and start over in most cases. As far as making it any “whiter”…. It won’t do that at all as once you have the micro thickness on the plated object then that’s the color it will be and additional time will add additional micron thickness to the plating and will last longer on the object. Use a lower voltage for a longer period of time with a very high polished piece and most importantly is to not have tainted your rhodium solution by contamination of the solution or using the wrong anode or cathode for the project. For Rhodium…. Platinum is best for both.

works better when you aim the torch across the opposite sid eof stone, so the solder doesnt pull down the prong, also you didnt use enough solder, making the prong too thin.

you need to electroclean before you rhodium plate

Why didn’t you remove the stone before repairing the prong? Very interesting 🤔
